Everyone ought to own a talking stick. You could use it at home, work, school, during

business transactions and when utilizing any and all other services. That is to say, you would use your talking stick in any situation where communication occurs. The talking stick originated a long time ago with Aboriginal people on the Northwest Coast. (Even back then, people didn’t listen.) It was a tool intended to promote democracy and fairness. The stick represented both ceremonial and spiritual significance by empowering each person to speak uninterrupted. The concept was this: When it was your turn with the stick, the floor was yours. You got to talk. Nobody was permitted to interrupt. (Try this with a three year old.) As the stick was passed from person to person, it helped to draw out shy people, and invited overbearing group members to, well, shush up and wait their turn. The assumption was each person would be heard, message and all. For years, I attended countless communications and teambuilding workshops, plus other personal and professional development programs, both as a participant and a leader. News flash: You can’t make anyone listen.

Including the leader. You can’t make anyone hear you. Especially when you get two or more people talking at once. Especially when they are (ahem, we are) thinking of what to say next. Or pretending to listen. The result is, as the intended recipient, we fail to process the speaker’s message, interpret the body language, and comprehend the real message before we respond. I am as guilty as the next person, I know. But I also know this: skipping that vital communication process is a relatively effective form of avoidance behaviour. And it’s rude. And it doesn’t get anyone anywhere. My children were taught to rise above tricky situations with people. They were encouraged to, “Be the better person.” Yes, they got tired of (and frustrated by) the advice and the enormity of the responsibility, as many of us still do; yet they continue to follow that golden rule. I see it in the ways they guide their own children. My mother taught us to never visit anyone’s home empty handed. While she likely meant one should always visit with a token of food or drink, I’m voting for the talking stick idea. That said, here’s a line I recently found: Where are we going and why am I in this hand basket?

Situated in an idyllic waterside setting on Pigeon Lake in Bobcaygeon, Lakewood Condominiums is the newest undertaking by Knight Developments.

This intimate two-storey building of just 22 condominium suites is now pre-registering for information. “We want to let our neighbours know that we are ready to move ahead with what promises to be a very exciting and long-awaited new community,” says Greg Knight President of Knight Developments. Lakewood is ideal for those looking to right-size from their present home and enjoy the worry-free low-maintenance lifestyle afforded to residents of a condominium. “We’ve been careful to ensure that Lakewood will be an excellent, attractive addition to the local community,” he adds. Every suite will enjoy either a water or woodland view from a spacious balcony or terrace along with the safety, security and efficiency of one-level living complete with elevator and covered parking. The building has been designed with a Craftsman-influenced architecture in a nature-inspired exterior colour palette intended to complement the surrounding scenery. Spacious suites have 9-foot ceiling heights and an array of deluxe finishes and desirable appointments. Sizes will range from a generous 925 square feet one-bedroom-plus-den to a gracious 1,370 square feet two-bedroom-plus-den and prices will start from $249,900. Since 2003, Knight Developments has been focused on creating unique places and spaces that residents are proud to call home. Among the company’s successes is a cottage community on 270 acres of land in Haliburton County. The company limited development on the property to just 11 lots and registered a number of

protective covenants on the land to ensure its future preservation. At Mineral Springs in Huntsville, Knight has implemented unique energy efficient building practices. With the first phase now completely sold, the second phase of 25 lots is scheduled to open in April 2013. In the Township of Seguin near Parry Sound, Knight worked with all three levels of government to build an attainable housing community for seniors comprised of rental units and market condominiums. Most recently, Knight Developments launched The Duke Lofts, an exciting loft conversion project in an 1884 schoolhouse in downtown Collingwood. Today, Greg Knight and his team of development professionals are bringing their expertise to Lakewood Condominiums in Bobcaygeon. To register your interest in learning more about this incredible new condominium opportunity, [email protected] or call 1-888-990-9120. Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday: Which Is It?

I think it’s time I share my thoughts regarding a Happy Holiday greeting that I have heard many folks talk about. I am very tired of the staff in various stores saying, “Happy Holiday” to me right after I have just wished them a Merry Christmas. Staff tell me that it is a store policy to say Happy Holiday instead of Merry Christmas even when they are wished a Merry Christmas from their customer; for fear of insulting people. Well I am insulted by this. This is Christmas for all Christians not JUST a general holiday. It is a celebration of Jesus Christ’s Birthday.

All faiths should be respected, which means that I would wish others at their holiday times a congratulations, Happy Hanukkah, Diwali etc. My father and I served and fought for Canada, and we respect the rights of other ethnic groups in Canada, and think for the best part we all live together very harmoniously. Yet taking Jesus Christ out of our life is just not good for anyone. We are not a secular society founded on secular beliefs. I do not respect the stores or store managers who force their employees to say Happy Holiday. Being politically correct is being politically intolerant, for all faiths. That is how I see it. So I think the next time I’m wished a Happy Holiday in a store I’ll put my purchase back on the shelf, and explain to the attending staff why I am not going to make the purchase.Ken Green,Bobcaygeon

the subject, if anything, has grown as indicated by the new members coming to us to join NPLRA and the various individuals or association representatives who call with financial and moral support. We greatly appreciated that you and Council have directed staff to construct the much needed bylaw, that was about the best news your constituents have heard in the past 12 months. The mere fact that you are going to take the first of what will be many steps, to building a representative plan for going forward with regards to all quarry development is appreciated. As our committee stays on top of the subject of quarries and looks to find other avenues of action be it to County, MNR or ombudsman’s office, we will keep you informed and hope you will lend your support wherever possible. None of your constituents sees this as a subject that is to be filed away but rather one that needs our due diligence now and in years to come. The NPLRA and our various associates remain ready and willing to help the Township in every way possible to find an amicable and sustainable solution. Together we live here. Together we play here. Together we can ensure the future remains reflective of our wants, yet melds with progress and its demands on our lands.Regards,Ross A. MortonPresident NPLRA

Shared ResponsibilityDear editor:

We would like to draw the attention of your readers to a community safety issue they may be unaware of because the incidents are often “near misses” and have not reached the front page as an actual incident. The simple act of crossing the street should not be a life-threatening event. For many using the community it is. Drivers are not following a basic driving principle, and because we pedestrians are not making it obvious that special care is required. The driving principle relates to making a right

turn at a stop sign or red light where right turns are allowed. Drivers are required, based on the Ministry of Transportation website, to approach a stop sign or red light and come to a full stop at the stop line or crosswalk (if there is one), or, if there isn’t one, to stop at the end of the intersection and wait until the way is clear before entering the intersection. For those in the community with some form of visual impairment, this is critical. Many have reported incidents where we were almost hit by a car that “coasted up” to a corner without coming to a full stop. Ensuring that no one is injured is a shared responsibility. Our simple request is that drivers come to a full stop and take the extra second to assess whether pedestrians are at a corner. Together, we can make accessibility a reality for all.Pj (Pennyjane) MurrayFor Kawartha White Cane Club

TO THE EDITORNote with interest all the wonderful Christmas decorations going up on Bolton and King Street. Then, of course, we reach Main Street. Christmas stops at Market Square. Why? Who decides who gets decorations or not? Yes, I understand there are not many of us over here on Main. There’s Full Cup Café, Kaleidoscope, Snider’s Garage, Flower Shop, The Promoter, and Lion’s Hall, home of the Kinettes who put on our brilliant Santa Parade. There are too many merchants to mention them all. There used to be decorations over here in the not-too-distant past, but now, sadly, we miss out. Do we pay taxes? Do we belong to the Chamber? We do. So why? Have a very Merry Christmas.Ella at Kaleidoscope

ELECTORaL COMMITTEE MEETING

Doug Elmslie reported on the Electoral Committee meeting in Cobourg and advised that it was well attended with many politicians both Federal and Provincial in attendance. Many presentations were opposed to the Commission’s recommended suggestion. It remains to be seen as to whether or not any impact has been made. MPP Laurie Scott, in her presentation, made a similar argument that others have made that severing the City of Kawartha Lakes by putting Lindsay with Port Hope and Cobourg and Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls with Haliburton and Uxbridge would be counter-productive.

THE HUMaNE SOCIETy OF KaWaRTHa LaKES

Since 2008 the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes and Janmore Kennels of Kirkfield have allotted l2 spaces available for storage of the stray dogs impounded by Municipal Law Enforcement as well as cats held for quarantine. But Janmore is no longer there and the City has incurred extra costs having to take impounded animals to places as far away as Pickering, Orillia and at times Toronto. The owners of impounded animals also must go

to one of these cities to reclaim their animal. The Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes is about to move their operations into a new facility next door. The Humane Society has offered to supply all 12 spaces in the current facility for exclusive use by the City at a rate of $1200.00 per month plus a flat care fee of $111.30 per dog. The facility would be available and accessible for impoundment 24 hours a day for officers. The motion to receive and act on the recommendation of Staff was easily approved by Council.

COMMUNITy CaREFor almost an hour the Community Care Volunteer Driver Grant came under intense scrutiny. At issue was a recommendation by Staff that a request for the remainder of the grant previously approved by Council for the Volunteer Driver Service for 2012 be paid to Community Care in the amount of $125,000. Normally this would be no problem, however, it has been discovered that the City cannot use the monies from the federal gasoline tax since it must be used for a new initiative and this is not new but a continuation. Also there is a requirement for CCCKL to provide ridership numbers to Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA). CCCKL is refusing to provide those numbers for 2011 and 2012 even though they had provided them previously. The ridership numbers are important because the level

of Gas Tax Funding the City receives is partially dependent on this figure. The Transit Dedicated Gas Tax Grant is calculated utilizing population numbers for the City and ridership numbers. The largest component of funding is based on the City’s population. The effect of CCCKL not providing their ridership numbers could be a reduction of approximately $20,000 from the $660,000 annual grant that the City receives. Staff is currently working with the Province to determine if such a reduction would occur. Staff considers the CCCKL proposal to be insufficient for accountability purposes, particularly given the amount of the grant. Council moved to defer the grant and for the City and CCCKL to resolve these outstanding issues.

SOLaR FaRMSThere were two more Solar Farms up for approval. Director Ron Taylor said both were on marginal agricultural land and the appropriate reports had been filed. Nevertheless, a number of members of Council had considerable reservations. Ward 16 Councillor Heather Stauble was not alone on these ones as Ward 7 Councillor Brian Junkin said “I don’t wish to support heavily subsidized solar farms.” On the other hand Ward 13 Councillor Pat Warren said while there may be problems with the GEA, she did not want the municipality to hold up local projects. Council had previously approved the combined 14 rooftop and ground-mounted projects but had done so “with reservation”. However they are told the approvals must be “without reservation”. That created considerable discussion. In a recorded vote Council approved the requests.

VOICING OUTDear: Mrs. Hodson

North Kawartha Family Health Team I am writing to the NKFHT because I am very concerned about the announcement that Bobcaygeon will no longer offer blood services. I have lived in Bobcaygeon all my life. It has been a very long time since I needed to go out of town for blood work. Personally, the loss of this service will only be an inconvenience, but for many residents it will be a hardship. They will have to rely on family, friends or pay for Community Care to access blood work in a timely fashion. How can the NKFHT claim “ a higher level of care” when a service so essential to good health is being cancelled without community consultation? What is the rationale for cancelling this valuable service? Why not hold a town meeting to solicit worthwhile input from the community? Would it be possible to extend the service to all residents regardless of the location of their primary care provider? There has to be a better solution than simply cancelling such an important service.Yours truly,Marilyn Kittle, Bobcaygeon

OMEMEE MEDICaL CENTRE I have been reading the letters of concern from the citizens of Bobcaygeon and area about the lab closure Jan 1st and resulting in having to travel to Lindsay & Fenelon falls to have their blood work done. A lot of people are not aware that we have a lab at the Omemee Medical Centre. The only requirement is that you must be rostered with a doctor that belongs to the Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team. There are 28 physicians that are part of that group in Lindsay, Fenelon Falls and Omemee. An appointment is necessary, which will cut down waiting time when you arrive. The hours of operation are Monday & Wednesday 8 am until 4 pm (closed 12 to 1). KaWaRTHa SETTLERS’ VILLaGENotes From the Manager

Can you hear the Christmas music? I love Christmas; the special times, our traditions, carols, lights, decorations, buying presents; the whole celebration is wonderful. I am not really ready, but now I am working on it. We have a few things on the go here at the Village. First, congratulations to the winners of our Photo Contest. Keith Griffin, treasures and best overall picture, Rachael Duncan, contrasts and Sharon Cation for the children category. The pictures were lovely and display some very talented photography skills. Thanks to Bobcaygeon Electronics for sponsoring this Annual Contest. Thank you to Glen Barton and Kelli Hornibrook for judging and another thank you to all who entered. Please enter again next year. On Dec 12, 2012 from 1 to 4, we’re hosting a Volunteer Appreciation open house. As a volunteer, we welcome you to come and join us, and give us a chance to thank you, without asking you to do another task. Double advantage, we can wish you a Merry Christmas at the same time. Hope you can make it. My volunteer of the week is Sylvia Reinecker. Sylvia helps in the office, guides tours, works at events and generally does whatever is asked of her.

She has recruited volunteers for us, even bringing in her brother, her husband and grandchildren when they’re old enough. Thank you Sylvia, your efforts are appreciated and Marion and I really like the Tim’s you bring us! Thank you. While I am thanking and acknowledging people, I hope everyone will shop locally whenever possible. By supporting local businesses you help support us, they pay taxes, live here and make our community strong. This makes very good sense. I appreciate the support Settlers Village receives and I shop here (probably more than my husband would like to admit.) I hope you are all ready to enjoy the Kinettes Santa Claus Parade. Bundle up and go welcome Santa to Bobcaygeon. I’ll see you there.Gail Thomassen, Manager

FaMILy-FRIENDLy“SUPPER CHURCH”

Planned for Advent

You don’t need to be a churchgoer to feel a disconnect between the meaningful Christmas you imagine, and the frantic schedule that is December. How can you bridge the gap? St. James Anglican Church in Fenelon Falls is hoping to help with a family-friendly event called “Supper Church” on December 9th at 4 pm, in the parish hall. “The idea is to get together for a meal that has worship built in,” says Rev. Susan Spicer. The event will include crafts, drama, music, the meal, and worship woven together, all exploring the themes of Advent. “Advent is about waiting and preparation. We’re looking forward to Christmas, when God enters into human experience. We want to create a space that will help people of all ages prepare for Christmas in a meaningful way,” says Spicer. The parish will provide supper on December 9, making it especially easy for families to attend. For more information, or to let the church know you are coming (although all are welcome to attend regardless), call 705.887.2537; or visit the parish website at www.fenelonanglican.com. Can’t make it on the Dec 9th? Supper church will be a monthly event, with a different theme every time. St. James is located at 7 Bond Street East, in downtown Fenelon Falls.

Bobcaygeon Legion Branch 239 “At the going down of the sun and in the morning we

will remember them.”Well, this is the season of giving and this community has not only shown to the Royal Canadian Legion the gift of giving but also to all our veterans. The Poppy Campaign this year yielded more than it has ever done in the past. The members that tagged for poppies were treated with dignity and respect and the local businesses went up and above board to support our campaign. At Tim Horton’s, free coffees were extended to

taggers and in some of the vehicles, poppies covered the sun visors in cars and trucks. All monies raised help veterans in need. I can’t say that I am surprised about the warmth and depth of caring from this beautiful town, but what I am surprised about is that we had fewer taggers than ever, due to illness and other reasons. We also had fewer days of tagging but we were more successful than ever. It only goes to show that when the going gets tough, this town gets going. I wish to extend my personal thanks to the Poppy Chairman, the committee members, the taggers who went out in the cold and rain, to all of the local businesses, and to each and every person who wore a poppy with pride. This town may be small but we stand together for good causes and this makes our people and our town special. We also had a beautiful day and a good turnout for our Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph. By Margaret Cameron, President Branch 239

It’s one thing to celebrate a dream come true and quite another when that dream comes true as a result of diligence, determination and exceptional service. StacieTaskerwasjust21yearsoldwhenshefirstopenedthe door to her own business. That was three years ago. On December 8, 2012, she welcomes longtime and new clients to the Grand Opening of her brand new spa downtown Fenelon Falls. bodiworx by stacie, spa & indulgences––even the name conveys the essence of her personality and focus. She wanted to be a make-up artist since the age of eleven; the dream became a pursuit while attending the Cosmetic Technique and Management program at Sheridan College. “Now my dream has come true,” she says. “What I’ve always wanted is to offer a real spa atmosphere to my clients.” The best part is the atmosphere, she says. “It’s as though I am giving back to all of my clients for their

loyalty.” The new spa is very cozy, at-home and rustic, in a classy kind of way. There’s a fireplace, barn board décor, everything to provide that perfect retreat. She calls it, “spa and indulgences” because she now offers product for purchase, including her own line of makeup, SET Cosmetics. And, the spa is immaculate. That’s a key factor in Stacie’s profession. When people hesitantly ask about the sterilizing process for tools, she encourages them. It’s good they ask, she says. She sets the bar to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and service that almost always only come with certification, educationandexperience. Over all, she credits her success to consistent family support and client loyalty.

“Pampering is our passion,” she says. “And we do that.” She and fellow employee,Certified Esthetician,Jessica Jenkinson make sure every person who walks out of the spa does so feeling they have been pampered. Oh, yes. Stacie wants clients to know there are stockingstuffers, giftcertificatesandsoon, they’lloffer

HELLO, NEW IMAGELocal Pharmacist Steps It Up

On October 1, pharmacist Magdy Kamar celebrated his15thanniversaryaspharmacist/ownerofVillageGate Pharmacy in Bobcaygeon. On November 1, VillageGatebecameoneofthePharmasavegroupof community pharmacies. One thing Magdy Kamar wants to make sure his growing clientele knows is, he is still the pharmacist and owner. He is still there. Still providing the same individual attention…and then some. “The biggest advantage of the change is I can remain independent but am able to offer more services and better, competitive prices to my clients.” His motto is: Patient care is our priority. And it is. Magdy says he has always taken the time to listen to the patients. “If you don’t listen to them and take the time, you can’t offer the patient the care they need.” He emphasizes their reputation for personal service and says the individual attention he and his staff, now numbering ten, offer clients is, in fact, their greatest strength. “Our clients are loyal. They appreciate our service and they know they can trust us. Even as Pharmasave, I am an independent community pharmacist,” he says, “Now we can offer a wider range of store brand products, lower dispensing fees and the same––even better service.”

Aries (March 21 to April 20)We sense you are feeling overwhelmed, Aries, by world events that you cannot control. Do not despair! You can make a difference. Why not “buy local” this holiday season? Head to the local church bazaars and craft sales, or support the local Kawartha merchants. It may seem like a small contribution, but you will feel better for it!

Taurus (April 21 to May 21)As a Taurus, you enjoy a close circle of friends with similar traits as your own. You may be tempted to to seek out newer friendships. This is okay! But … don’t ever forget or forsake the loyalty of your old ones.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22)Looking for some excitement in your life, dear Gemini? Something simple, yet refreshing? The Bobcaygeon Santa Claus Parade is just around the corner! Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. A great pick-me-up before the hurly-burly of Christmas really sets in. The theme is ‘Candyland’. Sounds delicious!

Cancer (June 23 to July 23)Don’t let the naysayers control your life, Cancer! No matter what others say, or don’t say, believe in yourself. Get in the habit of using encouraging self-talk, and when words of praise do come your way, consider them an added bonus.

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23)Your social life is a gigantic whirl! Yes, enjoy the good times, Leo, but don’t tire yourself out. Be selective and stay grounded, we say!

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23)“A well-developed sense of humour is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life.” Remember this, Virgo, in the days ahead. You will need to adjust your already fine-tuned sense of humour even more to avoid problems at work and in the community.

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23)Of the many traits of a Libra, elegance, charm and gentleness stand out. You love peace and harmony and seek the finer things in life, preferring to

surround yourself with beautiful things. Everyone likes to be around you, too. But don’t become self-indulgent or extravagant, especially at this time of year. Maintain your sense of “classiness” and don’t get carried away.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22)Ah, a winter love! Lucky you, Scorpio. There’s nothing better to warm the cold wintry days of December like a hot romance. Delight in it!

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21)This is your phase, Sag, and the phase of the “full cold moon”. During this month the winter cold fastens its grip and the nights are at their longest and darkest. This mid-winter moon stays above the horizon for a long time with a high trajectory across the sky, opposite a low sun. The First Nations people believed this moon reminded them to prepare for their spiritual path by learning the sacred teachings and songs that would sustain them through the winter, just as all creatures prepared themselves for the coming fasting months. This is good advice to follow, Sagittarius!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20)Feeling mysterious these days, Capricorn? Your zodiac colours are dark blue, green and mostly – black! – the most misunderstood colour. In most cultures, black symbolizes death and “the bad guy”, yet Native Americans thought it was good because it is the colour of soil, which gives life. Also on a positive level, black is seen as a restful emptiness, providing a sense of potential and possibility, and, yes, opening the door to mystery! Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19)Keep a close eye on your finances at this time, Aquarius. We don’t want you to be faced with a January meltdown. Just know what you want and what you can afford. All will be fine.

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20)Don’t be afraid to blow your own horn, Pisces. In fact, we advise you to lean on it as hard as you can! Let the world know you’re there and what you have to offer. Do not be shy!

TSUNAMI WARNINGBy David Sparkes

It’s impossible to escape from it. It will come at you from every angle, every side and every opening. It will be there when you turn on the television in

your home. It will invade your car when you switch the radio on to listen to the news. It will take over the newspapers you read and invade your computer through the cables, satellites and cellular networks. It will engulf you if you dare to enter a shopping mall or step onto the main street. It will come at you through your children and grandchildren in its most insidious form. You know what I’m talking about - it’s the Christmas shopping tsunami. It gradually gathers momentum and then begins to reach its full potential when American Thanksgiving is over – or, in the interests of maintaining Canadian content, when the Grey Cup is over. Then Hurricane Holly continues at full force with a relentless pressure, allowing no-one to escapeuntilDecember25th.Then,justwhenyouthink it’s all over, it takes on a new life with Boxing Day promotions and then January Sales. Few will survive without some damage to their bank balance or more likely their credit card debt. You can try ignoring the signs, deleting the e-mails, turning off the television and quickly putting thoseflyersintothebluebox.Youcantelleveryone

that you prefer to spend your money on worthwhile causes and you hate the fact that Christmas has become so commercial. You will quickly be labelled a Scrooge or Grinch and isolated from society. Guilt is just one of the many emotions it will use to engulf you. There is really no escape. The “experts” are quick to tell us that spending is good for the economy, creates jobs and keeps our system going. Those are the same people who will shortly be warning us that the debt level of Canadian families is spiralling out of control and we should all be more responsible. Some will even tell you that the real problem is global warming (I just put that in to keep you on your toes and make sure you are still awake). When Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol, times were a lot simpler. There was no radio or television, no shopping malls or Walmart and it was long before computers were even dreamed of. Nevertheless his simple message stays with us and his story is retold around this time of the year again and again. It’s worth reading, watching or listening to that story again, just to understand why it is still so popular. Dickens had some simple but profound truths in his writing. Here is one of my favourites, from Wilkins Micawber, a character in the book DavidCopperfield.Maybeitcouldhelpguideyouin your Christmas spending: “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery”.The language is archaic but the message is as relevant today as it was in Dickens’ time.

LESS STRESSMeans Take Care of You

The Holidays, for many, can be as stressful as they are wonderful. A lot of this has to do with shopping, food preparation, travel, and, in general, meeting the expectations of others. I know myself, a few years ago, I was expected to attend four Christmas celebrations with various members of my family living in various locations. All this and I worked until4p.m.onChristmasEve.Now, ithassettleddown to one Christmas Eve celebration with family and friends, Christmas morning with family and children, and a quick four-hour drive to Ottawa for another celebration and dinner. By Boxing Day I am exhausted. But aren’t the Holidays a time to relax? Nope. However, if one is creative and determined, there are windows of rest to be had. There is a way, at least in theory, to spread ourselves less thin during the Festive Season. Personally, I’ve had to learn to get some time formyself.Even in themidstof thechaos Ifindaway to slip out of the room and just sit somewhere with a book. Not for long; but just long enough. I’ve also become quite good at relaxing on the go. For example, using the four-hour drive as a nice chance to unwind and be with family (i.e. not just trying to “get there”). And of course, as far as shopping goes,

a little forethought and not waiting until the last day takes an enormous weight off everyone! Other things I try to do include: politely declining any extra events that seem overly stressful to attend; asking for help when overwhelmed by a project; and not being stricken with fear whether or not everyone else is having a great time or not.Sounds self-centered, I know, but sometimes it’s aboutsurvival.Plus,IfigurethelessexhaustedIam,the more energy I have for the kids and to catch up with those family members I miss the most.By Jeremy LePage

INSIGHTSLife Within Our Community

Friendship is a funny thing. It is something fluidthat changes as our lives change. Sometimes it is as intense as the moment it is created and molded. That moment ends and it fades away. Other times it is life long and is the familiar blanket that you wrap yourself in when things happen in your life both good and bad. Friendship is what you turn to when you need a pat on the back or a kick in the pants. It is something that is created in the schoolyard, on the ice, through the fog of raising your children, during a chance

meeting at an event that you struggle to remember later on in life. If you are lucky, it is something unspoken; there are no rules when it comes to times to call or requests you ask. It becomes a part of you, your routine, and a lifeline when you have nowhere else to turn. Friendship is a place where so many lessons are taught and shared. Where you learn to deal with conflict, stickingupforyourself, whereyoulearnhowto give and take. It is a place where you learn how to laugh, cry and more importantly how to love. It’s where you learn how to celebrate the differences and the familiar. We live in a world where precedence seems to be placed on what we have and what we want and what our life looks like to those on the outside instead of realizing the richness in our lives should be measured by the relationships we have built over the years. That is where the legacy is that we leave when our time on this earth is done. It lies in the stories, the laughter, the lessons and the tears we have shared with those we call friends.By Caroline Fenelius-CarpenterCaroline is the mom of young kids, has aging parents and works in long-term care. As a volunteer, she believes that if we work together, we can still create great things.

COMMUNITY CARESby Mike Puffer The Christmas season spotlights consumerism at its best (or worst), but it also serves to emphasize the shifting focus to an aging society. Everywhere one goes, we are exposed to advertising and promotion that is slanted to seniors and retirees - whether it is retirement living, health care, travel, leisure, recreation, financeornutrition.

There’s good reason for such a trend, as we all know. Seniors are the fastest growing demographic in thecountry.Itisestimatedthatinthenext25years,Canada’sseniorpopulationwillgrowfrom5millionto10.4million.TheCityofKawarthaLakeswillfeelthe impact of such aging more so than most regions. Our municipality has the second-highest senior population on a percentage basis in Ontario, and it is 50percenthigherthantheprovincialaverage. As a result, shifting trends of advertising and consumerism are going to grow in the years to come. Hopefully this will carry over into important matters such as municipal planning, so that our City will be age-friendly. Age-friendly means that a community’s policies, its services, facilities and programs support and enable people to age actively and healthily. It means having attractive amenities that will provide overall quality of life as residents age. It’s reasonable to assume that this area will continue to be a destination of choice for retirees in the years ahead, so municipal planners and decision-makers would be wise to ensure that there are facilities and attractions available to meet that age group’s wants and needs. If not, those future seniors will locate elsewhere to enjoy “the golden years”. CHIROPRACTIC NEUROLOGY Offers New Hope

Most people associate chiropractic with back and neck pain. However, the recent advances in brain research and imaging strongly support the new specialty of chiropractic neurology. This advanced branch of chiropractic offers new hope for those who have not found relief from conventional chiropractic, physical therapy and medical (drug) treatment. Chiropractic Neurology is a form of Chiropractic assessment and treatment that focuses on restoring and optimizing brain and nervous system function, which in turn improves health throughout the body. The Carrick Institute for Post-Graduate Studies, this approach relies on an in depth knowledge and application of how various parts of the brain and nervous system work together to create health (Central Integration). Functional Neurology offers new hope for those who have not found relief from conventional treatment. Chiropractic neurologists are specialists in evaluating the function of the brain and nervous system. Once the deficit has been diagnosed, atreatment protocol is implemented to increase the potential of the brain and correct the brain’s asymmetry. It is the treatment that separates us from medical neurology and other chiropractic methods. While medical neurologists utilize synthetic drugs to affect the system, we may utilize treatment involving physical modalities that are non-invasive and non-surgical. Consequently, we may recommend treatment or therapies that may not be familiar to medical neurologists, and will likely be new to you as well. Such treatment, known as afferent stimulation, is the use of elements of the physical environment that are non-invasive and non-surgical. When these afferent stimulation modalities are specificallyandcorrectlyapplied toyourcase, your nervous system will begin to regain its optimal function and you will begin to regain your life. MISTLE TOESChristmas is coming which, besides Santa, harkens the arrival Old Man Winter. Winter can be especially hard on the feet of people with diabetes. So, if you want to stay on the right side of your Chiropodist’s naughty and nice list, here are four tips for people with diabetes to help keep their feet healthy for the winter season.

1Moisturize. Diabetics are already prone to dry skin, and the low humidity of our northern

winter climate makes the problem worse. Dry skin cracks easily, which can lead to skin ulceration or serious infections. Your Chiropodist can provide a proper moisturizer meant for the thick skin of your feet, regular wax bath therapy, and other treatments to combat the problem.

2Proper winter footwear is essential. It needs tofitcorrectly, beingoodrepair, andbesuited

to your foot type. Poor footwear creates friction points that can lead to skin breakdown and ulcers for people with diabetes. It’s best to shop for your winter boots (or any footwear) later in the afternoon, since your feet swell during the day. If you wear orthotics, be sure to bring them with you for sizing. Your Chiropodist can provide unbiased advice and a prescription to help you shop for what will be best for you.

3Remember the “wear” part of “winter footwear!” Those fantastic winter boots do you no good if

they’re not on your feet. Many people with diabetes suffer from a lack of feeling called neuropathy. This puts them at real danger of frost-bite that can happen without them even knowing it. Also, neuropathy can make people more prone to falling. The warmth and extra traction of winter footwear helps guard against both of these concerns.

4Just as in any season, regular visits to their Chiropodist are essential for people with

diabetes to maintain good foot health and to keep their feet merry all year long.Submitted by the team atKawartha Total Foot Care Centre

THE LBD AT CHRISTMASFashionista Flair

The Little Black Dress (LBD) is the most useful item in a woman’s closet. Once again, it has been reinvented for Christmas. The same basic style can be worn at many holiday functions and easily changed up with different accessories. Wear vintage rhinestone necklaces (two or threetogether)forsparkleandflair.Addrhinestoneearrings,braceletand/orbrooch.Shoe clips are back in style and you can boost the appeal of your black pumps by adding large clip-on earrings. Shoes can also look festive in red, pink or metallic. Coloured or textured hosiery makes its own statement. Rather than cart your huge leather tote to the party, pick up a vintage clutch in black or accent colour. Adorn it with a rhinestone brooch. For those with tiny waists, add a vibrant, colourful silk sash, plus the sizzle of a big, sparkly brooch. For a gala New Year’s splash, choose a fascinator like those worn by Kate Middleton. BOBCAYGEON AND AREA

Chamber of Commerce

While most of us are preparing for Christmas and the slow-down in our lives that follows until the time the snow melts and spring is on the horizon, the Chamber’s new Board of Directors has begun gearing up for its new year and the events and business that it will bring. First in line, on November 20th, was the initial Board meeting of 2012-2013, at which the 17 directors chose their five-member executive. They are: Sue Paradoski as President, Max Miller as Vice-President, Cheryl Thurston as Treasurerand Bob Hughes as Secretary. Herb Gray, who has been Interim President, automatically became Past-President,withasecondVice-Presidenttobeannounced shortly. Along with the returning Board members, new Directors Adrian Barker and Don Mowry were sworn in, with David Guilbault and Rosa Sharpe to take the Oath at an upcoming meeting. Excited over the opportunities of working together with and for the Bobcaygeon and area business and general communities, for the betterment of all, some of these civic-minded volunteers have already begun carrying out their responsibilities for the eight community events the Chamber carries out each year. The next event, and the last of 2011-2012, will be the December 8th Christmas House Tour, which coincides with and complements the annual Santa Claus Parade. Tickets are still available at the ChamberofficeonCanalStreetEast.Submitted by Bob Hughes
