Luke’s Vision of Jesus – Part 2 In Luke, Jesus is not sympathetic toward the wealthy and privileged. They are often cast as the ones who suffer loss, and the poor and lowly are the ones who receive the greatest blessings. In Luke we have the Parable of the Rich Fool:

“There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. 17 He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ 18 And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods 19 and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ 21 Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.”

And then there is the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. They both die, and the rich man ends up in torment in the flames of the netherworld, while Lazarus is with Abraham in Heaven.

I imagine Pope Francis must prefer Luke’s Gospel and his vision of Jesus. Pope Francis has this same kind of leveling in the way he drives a modest car, lives in a modest apartment and comes down to the people’s level more often.

Luke tells us how Jesus draws people to Himself. His goodness, healing and mercy draw people from all around and they are healed and delivered from evil because Jesus has come into the world. People want to be near Him and even to touch Him.

When we come to Mass we are doing those things. We are drawn to Him by His great power and goodness. When two or three are gathered together in His name, He is present with them. Jesus is present to us as we gather for Mass, both in His Word and in the Sacrament of His Body and Blood. We likewise want to be near Him and to touch Him. These we do when we receive Him in Holy Eucharist.

The Kingdom of God has begun. Jesus has brought it near to us through His coming into the world. He sent His apostles to extend His ministry and His Church to the ends of the earth. We are drawn to Him and receive His healing touch and His Body and Blood at every Mass. Thanks be to God! Amen.

17"Pensaba: ¿Qué voy a hacer? No tengo dónde guardar mis cosechas.

¡Gracias a Dios! Amén ¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones! LENT "I will give you a new heart

and place a new spirit within you; taking from your bodies your stony hearts

and giving you natural hearts.” (Ezekiel 36:26)

During this Lenten season, we will have the opportunity to reflect on and pray with this scripture passage. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, there will be “stones” of all shapes, colors, and sizes in the Narthex. We are asked to pick a stone, and take it and a reflection paper home. Perhaps put these on your prayer table or in some other special place at home or work where you can pray with this daily, asking the Lord to change our hearts this Lent.

ATTENTION ALL EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION\ As an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, our ministry does not end with our service to others at Mass. We are called to take our Lord to others who cannot be with us at those times. We are to give personal witness to the presence of God through the expression of our faith, hope and love in our outreach and visitation to the sick, the elderly, homebound, dying and also to their caregivers. We show this by nourishing them with the Eucharist. No ministry is convenient; we have to move out of the church doors, and minister to our brothers and sisters who cannot be with us, to bring God’s presence to them through us. This Ministry to the Sick is in need of many more of us, in particular someone who can take Communion to those in the hospital on Thursdays and someone on Saturdays. If you can help with the ministry in any way, please pray about this, and then call Patti Kerth (713-409-3107) for hospital or homebound ministry, OR Jesse Garza (370-4472) for nursing home ministry.

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Friday 12:00 midnight—1:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

viernes 12:00 media noche—1:00 a.m.

This week on Ash Wednesday, the second collection will be for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Funds from this collection help support reconstruction, education, formation, and poverty outreach. For more information, please visit www.usccb.org/ccee. Thank you for your generosity.

from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Kristin Mudry tells us about another book for your Lenten exercises. Too Deep for Words: Rediscovering Lectio Divina, by Thelma Hall is a useful guide for anyone already familiar with this form of scripture meditation, while equally helpful for those who’ve never heard of it before. It makes lectio approachable and attainable—perhaps especially useful for someone who wants to utilize this prayer form during Lent. My favorite part was the section “50 Scripture Themes for Prayer”. These selected scripture passages are grouped around themes such as “The Tenderness of God”, “Forgiveness”, “God in Our Midst” and “Learning from Jesus”. The book is very useful for going deeper into prayer, scripture, and intimacy with the Lord. We are grateful for the many books we have received from anonymous donors. A recent gift, which would be stimulating reading for someone looking for something new for Lent, is Finding Our Way Again: The Return of the Ancient Practices, by Brian McLaren. From the dust cover: “There are ancient ways that can teach us to practice peace, joy, self-mastery, and justice. The old disciplines – fasting, contemplative prayer, simplicity, spiritual reading, meditation, solitude, silence, observing the holy days – do for our souls what exercise does for our bodies or study does for our minds. “These ancient practices are the means by which we prepare for grace to surprise us. They are the habits by which our souls grow weighty; actions of mind, body, and will that close the gap between the character we want to possess and the character we currently have.” This book, from the “high church” Protestant tradition, has penciled notes from an earlier reader, which give some of the experience of a group study.
