“Deeper” Sermon Series - Week 1 (Feb. 13/14, 2016)

Noticing the Now by Eliminating “Present” Problems

Problem: MindlessnessSolution: Mindfulness

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 And even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31 So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:29-31a; NRSV)

Problem: BusynessSolution: Do What Matters

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42; NIV)

Problem: The Past and the FutureSolution: Forgive and Don’t Worry

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (Ephesians 4:32; NIV)

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]? (Matthew 6:25-27; NIV)

Problem: AttitudeSolution: Gratitude

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. (Psalm 107:1)

GO DEEPER

…as it is written:  “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”[a] - the things God has prepared for those who love him.  (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Devotional - Discussion Guide

• Begin your time with prayer. Ask God’s Holy Spirit to guide your time together as you study His Word. Pray that the stresses and concerns of the week can be put aside so you can focus properly.

Page 2: Noticing the Now by Eliminating “Present” Problems · Today’s topic is “Noticing the Now.” The verses below were read as the main Bible reading. Take some time now to read

• We begin our new sermon series today - “Deeper.” Today’s topic is “Noticing the Now.” The verses below were read as the main Bible reading. Take some time now to read them and discuss what you think about them:

• Ecclesiastes 5: 18-20 - Make the Most of What God Gives• “After looking at the way things are on this earth, here’s what I’ve decided is the best way to

live: Take care of yourself, have a good time, and make the most of whatever job you have for as long as God gives you life. And that’s about it. That’s the human lot. Yes, we should make the most of what God gives, both the bounty and the capacity to enjoy it, accepting what’s given and delighting in the work. It’s God’s gift! God deals out joy in the present, the now. It’s useless to brood over how long we might live.”

• Look at each of the points on the other side. What are the “Present Problems” that you face that keep you from “Living in the Now?” How do the ones listed affect you? What’s missing that you are dealing with?

•  What “mindless” things do you find yourself doing?

• This series is about going deeper into our walk with Christ. Why does that matter? Does that matter? Read the very last verse on the other side. Any ideas of what God might have in store for you? For your family? For this church? For the world?

• Close with prayer. Pray about what you have discussed and pray for each other.
