St. Kieran Catholic Church First Sunday of Lent March 10, 2019 The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. — Romans 10:8 Notes from Fr. John T oday we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. The gospel tells us that after Jesus’ baptism he was led into the desert for forty days. He went to pray and reflect on all that had happened at his baptism. While he was in the desert the devil came and tried to distract him from God’s mission. Jesus didn’t take the devils bait and after his stay in the desert Jesus began his ministry. Lent is our own trip into the desert. It is a time for us to reflect on God’s call for us. It is also a time to fight our own personal devils as we turn from sin and work to follow Jesus. Let’s encourage each other to always open our hearts and minds to God’s plans and put them into practice. Today a group of women are on the second Women’s Welcome Retreat here at St. Kieran. In this first week of Lent they have taken time out of their schedules to open themselves to God’s plans. The Renew My Church process asks us to not just structurally change our parishes, but also spiritually. The women leaders have gathered women to share their stories of faith from St. Agnes, St. Kieran, St. Ireneaus and from St. Paul. The more we do together help us realize we are one church, one Body of Christ. Thanks to the women leaders and Fr. Tom for all their work in putting together the retreat. Pray for everyone participating together the retreat. Pray for everyone participating in this weekend. During Lent we are once again offering the Stations of the Cross on Fridays. We will have Stations of the Cross on Friday afternoons at 1:30 PM at St. Agnes. Stations on Friday evening will take place at St. Kieran at 7:00 PM. Evening prayer will take place at 7:00 PM on Wednesday at St. Agnes and Thursday at 7:00 PM at St. Kieran. I encourage everyone to fast from TV or internet and join us for these prayer opportunities. Thanks to the St. Kieran Women’s Club for hosting the great Mardi Gras Pot Luck dinner. As always, the food was a treat as everyone brought something to share. It was also nice to once again bring parishioners from both St. Kieran and St. Agnes together to socialize. We look forward to more great things to come. Speaking of which, the Coffee Shop is coming back next weekend March 17th. In honor of St. Patrick everyone is invited to the school vestibule for coffee and treats. For many years the Gornicks and friends have hosted these Sunday mornings and now the Deenihans stepping up to make it happen. If you are able please join us and if you see Jen or Kevin Deenihan and can offer any help I am sure they would appreciate it. Thanks Jen and Kevin and family!!!
