St. Kieran Catholic Church Second Sunday of Lent March 17, 2019 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? — Psalm 27:1 Notes from Fr. John T oday we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. Today the Gospel tells us of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Whenever there is a mountain involved, you know something big is going to happen. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up the mountain and lo and behold Moses and Elijah stop by for a visit. In case Jesus or the disciples were not sure what God wanted to impart from the baptism scene, the visit with the great prophets of old, Moses and Elijah, did the trick. Jesus was a new beginning. Built on the relationship that Israel had with God in the past, this relationship was new. Through Jesus God was coming to the people in a new way. Hopefully as disciples we also have a share in this new reality. All we have to do is accept Jesus and follow his ways. Paul tells us this in a different way in the second reading. Our citizenship is in Jesus Christ. Do we as Christians protect that citizenship with Christ as strongly as we seem to be protecting our national citizenship? Our actions are a passport. Last weekend we had the second successful Women’s Welcome Retreat St. Kieran. Thanks to Fr. Tom, Carla Lofrano, Cecilia Leal-Camacho, Arthea Stokes, Emily Hernandez, Sheila Cleary, Mindy Purcell, Debbie Linde and Elena Kozlowski for hosting this retreat. There are months of preparation put into making this happen and the team deserves our thanks. Thanks also to all the extra volunteers who provided hospitality including the Knights of Columbus, the St. Kieran Women’s Club, Women’s Welcome Group One, Bill Barker, the Linde Family and other family members of the team. It was a group effort and we are blessed to have great parishioners in St. Agnes and St. Kieran. Hopefully next year we will have a third women’s retreat and the first men’s retreat as well. Job well done! This past Sunday we also had a group of pari- shioners go to Holy Name Cathedral for the Rite of Election. These candidates have been meeting since September with the RCIA team and are now in the final preparation to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Martece Winston, Samuel Barron, and Ismael Barron were able to be at Holy Name and Renee Lee and Carolina Cruz could not be with us but were there in spirit. Please pray for all of our catechumens and candidates as we near the Easter celebrations. School registrations are being accepted at St. Agnes for the 2019-2020 school year. We encourage those looking for a school to contact the school office at 756-2333. Mrs. Karen Hamilton our school secretary will be happy to share information with you and arrange a tour of the school. Scholarships money is available until it runs out. So, make sure you register now. This Sunday we once again are having a coffee Shop. Thanks To Jenn and Kevin Deenihan for taking over the coffee shop for now. Please join us between 8:30-11:30 in the school vestibule and have some treats and coffee for St. Patrick’s Day. Finally, Happy St. Patrick’s Day to everyone. I am not sure the tales of snake removal from Ireland are true, but Patrick did bring the Catholic faith to the emerald Island. I hope everyone has a safe and fun filled day. Abortion and Child Abuse

In light of the proposed legislation in the General Assembly of the State of Illinois regarding making it legal to abort babies up until birth, the Archdiocese of Chicago, along with the Pro-Life arm of the church, wanted to publicize different aspects of the abortion issue. In an effort to educate and promote the sanctity of life, we will be offering a series of articles regarding this topic through the bulletin. The first article follows: Abortion teaches us that violence is an acceptable way to deal with difficult life problems. It teaches us that human beings are only valuable if they meet certain criteria, and it teaches us that the strong have a legal right to kill the weak and defenseless. When the unique value of individual human life is trampled upon, society inevitably suffers. Abortion advocates argue just the opposite. They purport that aborting "unwanted" children will reduce child abuse, neglect, poverty and violence and will generally lead to happier families. However, our experience since 1973 proves that this theory does not work. During that time, over 60 million "unwanted" babies have been denied the right to live, yet we have more crime, more violence, more dead-beat dads, and more gangs. Abortion advocates even argue that abortion is an effective way to prevent crime since it eliminates those who are "most likely" to commit crimes, more specifically the babies of poor mothers. Dianne Glass wrote an article supporting this radical idea. It is hard to believe that in this age, people could argue that human beings should be executed for crimes they may commit in the future and that abortion is the answer to solving poverty. Indeed, it is a truly frightening social policy! In the final analysis, it is only logical to conclude that societies who are willing to abort children before birth will be far more likely to abuse them after birth. Abortion is child abuse, and it is the most severe form of abuse in existence.
