Highland Park Hospital is a place of blissful beginnings. For nearly 100 years, we have provided exceptional care for women and

their families in Lake County and beyond. Highland Park Hospital combines the comfort and intimacy of a community hospital

with a nationally ranked Women’s Program. Patients have an extraordinary team in their corner—an esteemed and deeply-caring

group of professionals dedicated to their well-being.

A warm welcome to the world

Each year, more than 1,300 newborns make their world

debut at Highland Park Hospital, and we are proud to

provide them the warmest welcome. Ours is among the only

hospitals in the region to provide a Labor-Delivery-Recovery-

Postpartum (LDRP) program.

The LDRP approach to childbirth is lauded among many

leading OB/GYN practitioners. Unlike other birthing

environments, LDRP mothers-to-be —and later, their infants —

can remain in the same room with the same medical staff

for the entirety of their stay. They are not moved from room

to room, and they are reassured by the presence of familiar

medical staff. This continuity of care is a primary benefit of the

LDRP approach. Clear communication is enhanced, and the

patient/caregiver relationship is nurtured.

LDRP rooms provide a comfortable, homelike atmosphere

and are spacious to accommodate caregivers and equipment,

as well as family and other visitors. With baby in the same

room, mothers are better able to soothe newborns, and

new parents gain greater confidence in their parenting skills.

Roomy accommodations for dad and siblings make the LDRP

experience more enjoyable for mother, baby and family.

Leading-edge medicine with a community-based approach to care

Edward Lee, MD, has delivered more than

1,500 babies at Highland Park Hospital,

and the words “attentive, thoughtful

and thorough” are used by patients and

colleagues to describe him. He credits the

excellent nursing staff and doctors who are

involved “minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour.”

Says Dr. Lee, “Patients have access to a

wide range of premier subspecialty care—

endocrinology, pediatric neonatology,

high-risk obstetrics and more—just five

minutes from home.”

Highland Park Hospital’s LDRP program can result in smoother

deliveries, and healthier and happier babies and mothers,

when compared to traditional labor and delivery rooms.

Support network

In recognition of its clinical care, quality and educational

efforts, NorthShore has received Magnet recognition and was

the first health system in Illinois to receive this prestigious

honor. The Magnet distinction commends NorthShore’s

excellence in nursing and high standards in patient care—

achieved by only 6 percent of hospitals nationwide.

Highland Park Hospital’s OB/GYN program provides a full

spectrum of healthcare support to women—from straight-

forward issues to the most complex—for those celebrating

the birth of a child, battling ovarian cancer or grappling with

postpartum depression.

Exemplary care is provided for all our patients, regardless of

their ability to pay. A leading example of our commitment to

care is our Perinatal Depression Program that identifies and

supports women at risk for depression during and after giving

birth. Treatment is offered free of charge and is tailored to the

needs of each patient.

Highland Park Hospital’s gynecologic oncology team provides

comprehensive and compassionate care for patients while

also pursuing clinical research that will benefit patients, the

community and beyond.

Education is fundamental to our work as well. In partnership

with the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine,

Highland Park Hospital provides medical residents and fellows

in family medicine with comprehensive training and instruction

in women’s and pediatric care.

With skill and compassion, our clinicians help women

surmount breastfeeding obstacles, manage high-risk

pregnancies, overcome infertility and much more. NorthShore

University Health System’s leading-edge research drives

practical applications in clinical care so we can deliver the

most successful and promising treatment.

“ Our team of superior doctors, nurses and technicians focuses on collaboration across all our women’s health disciplines. By creating an environment where best practice is readily shared, we provide leading-edge care and treatment for our patients. Simultaneously, NorthShore’s clinical research supports new innovations in care, and our multidisciplinary teams foster professional development in each other.” –Dr. Richard K. Silver Chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief Academic Officer NorthShore University HealthSystem

Highland Park Hospital opened its doors in 1918. Our pre-eminent birth center and maternity ward welcomed patients

from the very beginning. This focus on building healthy families is part of our legacy—fundamental to our vision, our promise

to provide multigenerational care.

Since its earliest days, Highland Park Hospital has been a

community cornerstone committed to providing high-quality

healthcare to our communities. Generations of families have

entrusted us with their minor bumps and breaks and more

significant medical issues. We have treated hundreds of

thousands of patients with the same compassion and care with

which we would treat our own family. Our commitment has only

deepened as our hospital has grown. Over the years, we added

a new wing and became the first hospital in Lake County to

perform open-heart surgery. Then our Kellogg Cancer Center

opened, providing the most comprehensive subspecialty care for

oncology patients.

In 2000, Highland Park Hospital became part of NorthShore

University HealthSystem. While maintaining our strong

neighborhood roots and comforting ambiance, this relationship

enabled us to provide our patients with access to an even greater

pool of talent, resources and technology.

Today, Highland Park Hospital is a certified Primary Stroke

Center. Our Lactation Consulting Program is world-renowned.

Our Emergency Department serves as the region’s hub for

disaster response. And our acclaimed Pediatric Preparation

Program helps children feel less apprehensive about their

hospital stay.

Each year, more than a thousand babies open their eyes here

for the very first time. It means a lot to us that we are an anchor

in our Highland Park community. And we are honored that so

many individuals and families choose us to safeguard their most

valuable possession—their health, and the health of their families.

“ We take care of our patients as though they were our own family.”

Susan Simon began her career in pediatrics

in 1975 and has been the first face to greet

thousands of babies. She not only loves her

work, she values being part of the Highland

Park Hospital team. “We apply all our skills

and learn from each other. The expectation

here is very high, but there is an enormous

amount of support.” Patients are grateful

for Highland Park Hospital’s deep-seated

philosophy of care. “We treat people with

respect and kindness…and they remember

that. Patients have returned to me years later

with thanks. Highland Park Hospital memories

stay with them forever.”

“ People feel really good about Highland Park Hospital. It greets patients with such a welcoming environment, and it’s so reassuring for community members to know we’re just minutes away from some of the best medical care available. As the mother of three adult daughters, I’m especially excited about the plans for a new Women’s Center. “ A hospital that felt friendly to us was very important, but excellent care was essential.”

“ Highland Park Hospital has been our family’s

trusted medical go-to for years,” says Nikki

Collins, a Highland Park resident for more

than a decade. She and her husband, Bobby,

knew their children’s first home would be

Highland Park Hospital. “There were slight

complications with my first pregnancy,”

says Ms. Collins. “My physician, Dr. Kramer,

monitored me constantly, took every

precaution, and communicated with me

clearly and with such compassion.” Adds

Mr. Collins, “Knowing that we had access to

the amazing Highland Park Hospital team and

all the specialties within NorthShore’s system

in case of trouble was very reassuring.”

Park Hospital. “Patients feel comfortable

here,” says Dr. Adis. “We provide women and

their families with a cozy, homelike delivery

experience and with all of the support of a

premier hospital.” Along with his colleagues,

he is looking forward to the Hospital’s new

Women’s Center. “We have an exceptional

team here and extraordinary patient loyalty.

Our care and service will be even better

with updated facilities and technology, new

operating rooms and more.”

other well-earned pampering touches.

Spa-like amenities

is to provide a nurturing, comfortable experience for mom,

baby and family.

Roomy and comfortable for the whole family

“ I was set to deliver at a different hospital, but became seriously ill with the flu and rushed to Highland Park Hospital. It turns out I was in labor, too! Dr. Lamar Tyler was a stranger to me but treated me with such phenomenal care. My pregnancy was high-risk and I was scared. He offered to transport me to the hospital where I had planned to deliver. But he, along with an extraordinary team of nurses, made me feel so safe and nurtured that I declined the transfer.”
