Lakeshore quarterbackAl Damion Riles andright tackle Pierson

Villarrubia provide a toughcombination for defenses.

One of the strengths forboth seniors is their feet.

With Riles’ speed andarm strength, the Titanshave the ball in the hands ofpossibly their biggest offen-sive threat every play. Rileshas proven to be a talentedall-around athlete, who hasgood speed and a strongarm.

“Al Damion brings explo-siveness, speed and tough-ness,” Titans’ coach LarryRoute said. “He’s a kid thaton any play can go to thehouse. On any play, even ifwe drop back to pass andthe play breaks down, hecan make it right. He hasthat type of ability andspeed. I think he gives us amajor threat in the pocketand I think it’s going to bebig for us.”

Route also said thesouthpaw quarterback hasthe ability make plays onhis own.

This season is Riles’ firstas a starting quarterback. He takes over for the right-handed Michael Ball, whois at outside linebacker/safety. Ball could also seetime at QB and receiver.

Riles played quarterbacksome last year, but wasmostly at receiver.

Last season, Riles wasthe team’s second-leadingrusher with 458 yards andnine touchdowns. He alsocaught 14 passes for 378yards and three TDs.

He said he loves his newrole.

“Every play, I get myhands on the ball and Iknow I can contribute withpassing and running theball and pretty much help

my team out as much aspossible. Being quarterbackis the best thing for me,”Riles said.

Without good offensiveline play Riles’ job would bea lot tougher.

“They are a major part,”Riles said. “I bond withthem well because I know Ineed them. I’m really goodfriends with them.”

Like Riles, Villarrubiahas a new role, protectingthe blind side all of the timesince Riles is a lefty.Villarrubia said the rightside is normally where youput your run-blocking line-man.

“I’d cave it all down andwe’d run off of it,”Villarrubia said. “But now,we’ve got to be able to pro-tect Al too on top of that.

I’ve got a lot of duties I’vegot to take care of now, but Ithink I’ll do fine.”

Villarrubia, who leadsthe Titans’ offensive line, stands 6-foot-5, 265 poundsand is being recruited byseveral universities.

“He means everythingbecause Pierson’s mypulling guard, he’s my leadblocker and he’s my back-side blocker,” Riles said.

Route said it’s importantto have good linemen onyour quarterback’s blindside.

“A lot of teams put theirbest rushers on that side togo after the quarterback,”Route said. “We feel likehe’s our best offensive line-man and he’s going to pro-tect him. He’s so athletic. We use him a lot too when

we pull on traps and whenhe leads outside, he’s ath-letic enough to block defen-sive backs.”

Similar to Riles, one ofVillarrubia’s strengths is hisfootwork, which the line-man said is extremelyimportant to the position.

“They put you in theright position to blocksomeone,” Villarrubia said.“They give you an elementof speed. They give youeverything. Last year, Iplayed against plenty ofguys that were bigger andstronger than me, but Icould dominate them justbecause I was quicker thanthem. I could outmaneuverthem by getting in the posi-tion I wanted to be. I thinkthat’s really important.”

Riles, who is also being

recruited, said Villarrubiawould be a big contributornot just to the team, but tohim because the signalcaller said his right tackle iskeeping him healthy.

Coach Route saidVillarrubia is a big guy, whois very athletic.

“He’s just a great kid andworks extremely hard,”Route said. “The young kidslook at that and they aregoing to emulate that andit’s going to help our teamin the future.”

Villarrubia feels one ofthe things that has madehim a good offensive line-man is being coachable.

“It starts off with athleti-cism and having a goodframe because you need tohave a good frame to be anoffensive lineman,” Villar-

rubia said. “Then you needto be athletic and then ontop of that you need to becoachable.”

Villarrubia said youalways have to be willing tolearn and use that in a gamesituation so you can con-stantly get better.

Villarrubia said he’sworked on his athleticism awhole lot. He began playinghigh school football as asophomore. He said heplayed fullback or quarter-back growing up.

“I’ve always been realexplosive and athletic,”Villarrubia said. ”I thinkthat’s what’s transferred tothe football field real well.”

Riles has been playingfootball since he was six.Riles’ older sister Jamie is a2009 Fontainebleau Highgraduate.

Like his older sister,Riles also runs track, com-peting in the 100-meters,200 along with the 4x100and 4x200.

“I competed with her alot and she was always ableto beat me. So I pushedmyself to beat her all of mylife. She started runningtrack in seventh grade andthat’s how I got out to trackbecause I was watching hersince I was in middleschool. I loved it and Iadmired her because she’sgood at it.”

Riles said he competedwith his sister until he gotfaster.

While at FHS, Jamie wasa state champion in the 400meters, captured six dis-trict titles and she was theteam’s Most ValuablePlayer all four years. She isnow a junior at TulaneUniversity. In her freshmanyear, she was theConference USA 400-meter champion.

Lakeshore opens the reg-ular season on the roadSept. 2 against Covington.

Archbishop Hannan’s Hawks entertheir second season under head coach

Pat Lambert with their coachingstaff in tact.

The Hawks still experiencing someof the growing pains of relocating tothe Northshore following Hurricane

Katrina continue to make strides intheir new school facility with hopes ofone day having their own football sta-dium.

This year the Hawks will play all oftheir home games at William PitcherJunior High in Covington with seveno’clock kickoffs.

The Hawks without the benefit of atrue home field since Katrina do havetheir own practice facility this timearound courtesy of Rob Mingo, whograciously donated Deer CrossAthletics for their use during the foot-ball season.

Coach Lambert said he was gratefulto have such a nice practice facility.

“Mr. Mingo allows us to use thepractice field and now we have anindoor facility which is really nice too.If it rains we can get inside and we’regoing to try and beat the heat a little bitgetting in there to do our stretchingand do drills inside,” Lambert said.

“He’s been really great and his staffis tremendous including Kyle andBlake Nunez. They always keep thefield up and put water down when thefield needs it so they are always thereto help out,” Lambert added.

The Hawks finished last seasonwith a 39-man roster and thus far thisseason they stand at 53 players.

“We are still going to be very, veryyoung especially since we picked upsome eighth graders. They are veryeager. We had a great summer beingover at our new facility, which helps usa lot,” Lambert said.

Lambert said he liked the commit-ment of this team.

“During the summer players are

required to make 28 workouts and wehad a lot of them make all 28 whileothers made 26. They definitely have

the commitment and hopefully theyare starting to make a growth spurt.Strength wise they have gotten a lotbetter than what we were. We gotmanhandled a little bit last year,”Lambert said.

This year’s Hawks’ program onlyfeatures two seniors in two-way per-former center/defensive linemanDoug Hartigan and linebacker/defen-sive end Phillip Krantz.

Lambert shared his thoughts on histwo seniors.

“They are two very good kids.Phillip is a good vocal leader and Dougis when he has to be,” Lambert said.

Hartigan (6-2, 215) is the Hawks’starting center and defensive tackle.

“I love playing both positions. Ithink we will be good offensively thisyear,” Hartigan said.

In addition to Hartigan at center, the Hawks return sophomore leftguard Jack Witte (5-9, 163) and sopho-more left tackle Nathan Fouquet (6-2,200) along with sophomore right tack-le Austin Burgess (5-11, 187).Sophomore right guard Matt Morel (5-7, 210) joins the starting O-line, replac-ing his brother Mark, who graduated.

Hartigan talked about liking thechemistry between the offensive line-men.

“I like the way our offensive line isshaping up. We look to play welltogether as a unit,” Hartigan said.

“I’m just excited about this being mysenior year and I love being a seniorleader on this team. Phil (Krantz) and I

have been with the teamsince the ninth grade. We’ve gone from the verybottom to the very top andwe have seen how the teamhas grown. Just being ableto see the changes we areboth so excited about hav-ing a chance to lead thisteam and we are ready,”Hartigan added.

Hartigan said he and histeammates are looking tomake a total turnaroundfrom last year’s 1-8 record.

“We want to come outand show everybody whatwe have. I can’t wait for theseason to get started and wehope it is an amazing sea-son for us,” Hartigan said.

The center talked abouthe and sophomore quarter-back Korey Zeigler having agreat relationship.

“We’re the best offriends. We’re like brothers

and like to mess aroundtogether but when we geton the field it’s all aboutdoing whatever it is wehave to do and we do it,”said the senior center.

Korey (Zeigler) has real-ly stepped it up. He’s amaz-ing and continues to put ina bunch of work and we’rehappy to have him herewith us,” Hartigan said.

Zeigler, earned his bap-tism under fire early in hisHannan career, getting thestarting nod as an eighthgrader.

Zeigler connected on115-of-222 attempts (51.8percent) for 936 yards inthe Hawks’ short-stylepassing game last season.

He tossed seven TDs with11 interceptions, whilerushing the ball 87 timesgaining 289 yards with fourscores.

Coach Lambert talkedabout Zeigler’s ability.

“We hope to have moreof an intermediate typepassing game this year. Wewill stay away from thedeep stuff, but Korey hasgotten good at it,” Lambertsaid. The young two-yearstarter talked about thisyear’s version of the Hawks’offense.

“I think we are reallycoming together and grow-ing up. We are developing achemistry that we didn’thave in the previous yearsbecause we were so young. We’re still a young team butthings are coming togetherfor us,” Zeigler said.

Zeigler has his top targetfrom last year, sophomoreJacob Brooks (6-0, 169)back. He collected 34receptions for 325 yardsand three scores.

Brooks said this year’s

club is looking better inpractice and this teamshould be a lot stronger andquicker.

“We are all into this yearand our coaching staff isback. I have a good feelingabout this season and I’manxious to get it underway,”Brooks said.

Brooks said the Hawks’passing game is in reallygood hands with Zeigler.

“We’ll have to take whatthe defensive secondarygives us and its up to thereceivers to find the openroutes. We’ll take what thedefense gives us,” Brooksadded.

Brooks said he has prettygood hands with quick feetand runs about a 4.6 forty. ”Korey has a great arm andcan throw the deep passes.I’ll just do my job trying tocatch everything he throwsmy way. When we go intothe huddle we look atKorey as our leader. He has

a strong voice and is adetermined player. We trustand respect him,” Brookssaid.

Brooks said in addition toplaying wide receiver hewould also see some time inthe Hawks’ secondary.

Brooks said his club hasto play clean football with-out committing mental mis-takes and do their best tokeep the ball in their talent-ed quarterback’s hands.

Zeigler said he wouldalso be looking for juniorAnthony Caronna andfreshman Daniel Hollander.

“Everybody was playingus so far off last year thatkind of dictated us having ashort passing game. I thinkwe are definitely going totry to get some deeper pass-es this year. I hope we canopen it up a little more,”Zeigler said.

“I feel we can have adeeper passing gamebecause we have moreweapons to choose fromand better pass protection. We’ll miss the seniors thatgraduated for sure but wewill just have to make do,”the sophomore quarterbacksaid.

Sophomore running backMichael Froeba (5-10, 157)topped the Hawks groundgame with 158 yards lastseason.

Zeigler described Froebaas a good, young runningback.

“I feel confident in hisability to run the ball and heis a great blocker for beingsuch a little guy,” Zeiglersaid.

Sophomore receiver/safety Zack Castelluccio (5-8, 155) shared his thoughtsabout this year’s Hawks.

“We are so pumped upthis year. Obviously, we arestill rebuilding with onlytwo seniors but we knowwe are capable of being agood team,” Castellucciosaid.

“We want to take lastyear and use it as motiva-

tion for this year to winmore games. I have learnedto never give up and alwaysgive 100 percent,”Castelluccio remarked.

Castelluccio said the sec-ondary is looking good.

“We are growing olderand getting better. I like toread the quarterback’s eyesand break on the ball. Iwant to try and jumproutes,” Castelluccio said.

When asked to name hisfavorite NFL player hewent old school choosingDetroit Lions retired run-ning back Barry Sanders.

Coach Lambert said he’shappy to have his coachingstaff back along with defen-sive coordinator Bobby

Scelfo.“Bobby brings a lot of

enthusiasm. He’s a greatperson to be around and thekids love him and hiscoaching style. He is alwaysvery positive and is recover-ing from a knee injury hesuffered during a seven onseven at Pearl River earlierin the summer,” Lambertadded.

Lambert said the Hawksfinished with a plus three inthe turnover ratio last sea-son.

“They always playedhard and never quit all theway to the final whistle. Ithink that is what you cancount on this bunch to do aswell,” Lambert said.

Lakeshore’s Titans enter their sec-ond year of playing varsity footballwith an opportunity to make history.

For the first time in the school’sthree-year existence, Lakeshore’s foot-ball team has a chance to qualify forpostseason action.

Last year, Lakeshore went 4-5 withall of their losses against teams thatmade the playoffs. Their setbackscame against Jesuit, Newman,Southern Lab, Riverside Academy andSt. Charles Catholic.

Jesuit, Southern Lab and Riversideall made it to the quarterfinals, whileSt. Charles Catholic got to the semisand Newman reached the regionals.

Lakeshore third-year coach LarryRoute said the experience of last yearshould help this season.

“We’ve played in tough environ-ments at St. Charles Catholic,Riverside and Newman. We played allof those games on Friday nights,”Route said. “That was great experiencefor us. I told the kids after every gamethat win or lose, the best thing aboutlast year is that we have everybodycoming back.”

The Titans’ coach said they tooktheir lumps in some games.

“That’s a good learning experiencefor us, so now we can react differentlythis year now that we’ve been thereand done that,” Route said.

The Titans operate out of the spreadoffense.

Senior quarterback Al Damion Rilesis the full-time starter for the first time.He could also see time at wide receiver.Riles, a lefty, who saw time at signalcaller last season, has a strong arm anda lot of speed.

Riles was the team’s second-leadingrusher with 458 yards and nine touch-downs. He also caught 14 passes for378 yards and three scores.

Riles, who feels his speed and vision

are his strengths, said he played quar-terback mostly in the wildcat forma-tion.

He said he’s learned a lot since 2010.“Last year, I was just learning how

to read defenses. It was mainly basedon me running. Now that I’m at quar-terback, they need to base my game onthe throwing and the running game, sowe have more of a threat on the cor-ners. I’m a lot better on my reads andcoach has been teaching me a lot, soI’m getting a feel for it now.”

Junior Michael Ball started the pasttwo years. Ball is now an outside line-

backer/safety and will see time atquarterback and wide receiver.

Last year, Ball completed 53-103 for783 yards and eight TDs. He also ranfor 417 yards and tallied six times.

Ball said he likes his new role.“It’s a lot more physical than quar-

terback,” Ball said. “Quarterback was avery mental position. My new positionis in a way easier because I don’t haveto rely on mental abilities as much asphysical.”

Ball feels having playedquarterback will help himdefensively.

“You definitely learnwhat quarterbacks thinkwhen they’re droppingback for a pass or looking atfilm. You want to give themfalse looks,” Ball said.

Senior running backNick Williams providesanother threat out of thebackfield. He was theteam’s leading rusher lastyear, going for 838 yardsand six touchdowns.

Williams said he feels hisstrength is reading theholes.

“This year, I’m stillfocused on hitting theholes, but getting off oftackles and keep going withit,” Williams said.

Williams said he’s excit-ed about having a chance toget to postseason.

“It’s the last year. Youjust gotta leave it all out onthe field. We’ve worked thishard, so it’s time to show it,”Williams said.

Coach Route saidWilliams does a good job ofhitting the hole and makingthe right cuts.

“I think he’s going tohave to be big for us thisyear. I think we’re going tohave a double threat (alsowith Riles) back there inthe backfield. It’s going tomake us a better all-aroundteam,” Route said.

The wide receivers aresenior Mikal Mazik andTreston Decoud, juniorsBall, Jared Scott and TylerThames along with sopho-more Jacob Vigh.

Coach Route said theywould use a bunch of guysat wide receiver.

Scott caught 17 passes for358 yards and a team-lead-ing five TDs.

The offensive line is solidonce again, led by seniorright tackle PiersonVillarrubia. The rest of the

linemen include seniorguards Ryan Hughes andJosh Wahlen, senior centerRandy Boudreaux and jun-ior tackle Zach Lechlieter.

“This is their third yeartogether,” Route said. “Wehave a lot of continuitythere. Coach (Bobby)Sanders does a good jobcoaching them, so weexpect big things fromthem this year.”

Defensively, the Titansoperate out of the 4-4 andfeature size up front with

defensive tackles seniorJohn Ohlenforst (6-2, 250),a Pearl River transfer, andBrandon Ducre (6-1, 250).Mazik and junior AnthonyMayes are the ends.

“The strength of ourdefense I think is probablyour front four. All of thekids are kind of tall, lankykids and very athletic. We’re not the biggest teamup front, but we’re very ath-letic up front.”

Ball brings speed andgood instincts to the out-

side linebacker/safety rolewith junior Gerard Simonehandling the other OLBspot. The inside guysinclude junior JamesHarkin and sophomoreTyler Prestenbach.

The corners are juniorsDustynn Smith and CyrilCrutchfield along withDecoud at safety.

Decoud was ineligiblelast season due to transfer-ring from Hammond.

Prestenbach led LHSwith 53 tackles last year,

while Ducre made 28 stops, five sacks and recoveredthree fumbles. Mazik alsohad a good season with 35tackles and eight sacks.

Ball said the defensivebacks are quicker, fasterand more agile.

“I feel like we’re gettingmore mature in the gameitself in thinking in toughersituations,” Ball said.“That’s what the coaches

have been training all sum-mer and the past few years. It’s new for me coming intoit, but we’ve advanced a lotthe past few years.”

Coach Route said Ball hasnatural instincts in thedefensive backfield.

“We really have to watchhim when we throw bub-bles and stuff like that (inpractice) because he’ll jumpit,” Route said. “He does agood job. I think Mike (Ball)in the 7-on-7s this summerhad 4-or-5 interceptionswhere he broke in front of aguy. He has really goodinstincts, so we’re lookingfor big things from him.”

Junior Ian Jones returnsas the kicker, while juniorAustin Bellamy takes overthe punting duties.

Route said Jones’ longlast year was a 42-yarder.

Lakeshore opens the reg-ular season with a roadgame Sept. 2 againstCovington.

Northlake Christian School’sWolverines finished 8-3 last seasonfalling in the bi-district round to anexcellent Farmerville team. Thedefending District 8-2A champs grad-uated a talented senior class but third-year head coach Tony Agresta said thisgroup would find its own way.

“You always run the risk when agreat group of seniors leads you andaccomplishes so much that people willalways be comparing this group to thatgroup. That’s unfair to do that to highschool athletes. They all have theirown time to shine and God willing thiswill be a successful season for them aswell,” Agresta said.

Senior Mallery Mele (5-10, 175) willbe counted on going both ways as theWolverines’ lead running back andsafety in the secondary.

Derek Williams, who graduated, putup big numbers offensively last yearrushing for 1,151 yards, averaging sevenyards per carry with 20 touchdowns.

Mele rushed for 418 yards last yearaveraging 9.28 yards per carry on just45 rushes with five scores.

Agresta said he knew Mele wouldeventually role into Williams’ shoes.

“I tell you what, Mallery could be asgood as Derek if not better. They aredifferent types of backs. Derek

(Williams) really enjoyed runningbetween the tackles and loved leveling

his shoulders, a true work-horse,” Agresta said.“Mallery is tough and canrun between the tackles butthe reality is he has enoughspeed (4.6) to get on theedge. We’ll do some thingsthat are more geared to hisability,” Agresta added.

Mele is a well-condi-tioned athlete and was akey contributor on theWolverines’ Division IIIstate championship soccerteam and talked about giv-ing it his all.

“I’m planning on juststaying on the field. I’msure I’ll be getting the ball alot but if coach needs me tocatch the ball as a widereceiver, that’s what I willdo. I like catching the balland picking up yardageafter the catch,” Mele said.

Mele caught eight passesfor 186 yards and a TD inthe Wolverines’ run-orient-ed offense last season.

“If I get a break here orthere that would be okaybut I’m not expecting it.Honestly, I don’t want it.Being a soccer player defi-nitely helps me with myconditioning,” Mele added.

“I’m excited about thisseason especially since it’smy senior year. It’s alwaysgreat to go from soccer tofootball for me. It’s a newopportunity and I’mpumped and ready to go,”the two-sport athlete said.

“Even though we gradu-ated a number of reallygood offensive players westill have a number ofthreats,” Mele said.

Mele said he and histeammates have confidencein young sophomore signalcaller Josh O’Rear.

“He’s tall and has a goodarm. He can move aroundin the backfield and he’ll bejust fine,” Mele said.

Mele said he and histeammates are looking forbig things this season.

“We’re not going to takea step back even though welost a lot of talented seniors.

We look at it as though wehaven’t lost anybody. Westill think we are a goodteam and we’re planning ongoing back to the playoffs. We’ll just keep pushing for-ward,” Mele said.

Mele said he likes to fol-low his blockers, find thehole and just hit it going100 percent.

As a safety, Mele had 16individual stops with sixassists and said he likes tohit people.

Coach Agresta said he’snot thrilled about Melehaving to get all thosedefensive touches but youhave to have your best play-ers on the field.

“What people forgetabout Mallery is that hewas one of our outside line-backers a couple years agoon our 6-4 playoff teamwhen he was just a sopho-more. The reality is he’s oneof the best football playerswe have and he is probablygoing to be out there ondefense maybe more thanwe would like,” Agrestasaid.

Agresta characterizedMele as a talented athletewho plays with extremeconfidence.

Devin Milazzo (5-9, 160)will start at running backwith time at wide receiverand starting outside line-backer. He’ll also play in thesecondary.

Milazzo, who is also asoccer player, said heprefers playing offense.

“I feel my best position isat running back.Conditioning is one ofthose things that can defi-nitely be a game changer. We’ve been working allsummer long to get inshape because there will bethose tough games outthere where conditioningcomes into play,” Milazzosaid.

“We have a lot of bigshoes to fill due to gradua-tion but like coach Agrestasays we’re not looking atbeing in anybody’s shad-ows. We’re going to createour own and we’ve gotsome good athletic peoplecoming up. I think we’ll be

able to take over the teamwell this year with our sen-ior leadership. We have alot of young players but I’mconfident they will step up.”

Senior starting offensiveright tackle Reid Shorter(6-3, 230) will also log timeas a defensive end.

“We’re definitely excitedto get the season startedand I hope we are ready toroll. We had a great seniorclass last year but this yearwe have some young kids, who played but were notstarters. I think we havesome players that are reallygoing to step up and sur-prise some people,” Shortersaid.

“This is my fifth year atNorthlake and I’d say this isone of the best offensivelines we have ever had. Wehave experience and prettygood size so I think we willhave one of our betteroffensive lines,” Shorteradded.

Shorter said he likesO’Rear’s ability at quarter-back.

“Josh is a great athlete. He can run and he canthrow. I think he’ll catch onquick. There is stuff he hasto learn about defensivecoverage and where tothrow the ball but I’m surehe’ll make it work. If he cangrasp the mental side of thegame he’ll be fine,” the sen-ior offensive right tackle

said. Shorter said the

Wolverines have a goodgroup of defensive players.

“I think there will bethree or four people rotat-ing in sharing the timeincluding myself along withChris Schell, GarrettKuracka and Riley Risher. Ihave a lot of confidence inall of us,” Shorter said.

Shorter said the team hasa great group of seniors (12)and they just have to showthe young guys how to dothe right things and lead byexample.

“Every one of the seniorsis a good leader even theones that don’t have muchplaying experience. Wehave a good senior crewwith a good group of jun-iors behind us,” Shortersaid.

Garrett Kuracka (6-1,225) starts at offensive leftguard and will spend timeat defensive end.

Kuracka said he couldn’twait to put on the pads inhis senior year.

“This is the first year I’mstarting both ways so I’mstill learning a lot ondefense. I’m putting in allthe work I can,” Kurackasaid.

“Offensively, I’ve beenone of the ones playing thelongest. I have lots of expe-rience and even thoughwe’ve lost a couple good

linemen, we have somegood linemen returning.”

“Some people think play-ing on the offensive linemay be boring but I like it. Ilike pulling on our trapplays and that’s alwaysfun,” Kuracka added.

Kuracka said Mele hasbeen working extremelyhard in the backfield forseveral years now and hethinks he’s going to have avery good senior seasonrunning the ball.

Kuracka said O’Rear isstepping up and knowshow big a responsibility hehas with the team offen-sively. Kuracka named NewOrleans Saints receiverRobert Meachem as hisfavorite offensive playerand tabbed former Saints’linebacker Scott Fujita nowwith the Cleveland Brownsas his defensive player.

Agresta talked about hisyoung sophomore signalcaller O’Rear, who was 2-of-4 for 18 yards, whilerushing for 25 yards as afreshman, playing behindTyler Clark, who is attend-ing LSU.

“Josh is more of a prototypical type quarterback inthe sense that we have hadathletes that we have putback there good quarter-backs in their own right but

standing back there at 6-2at about 180 pounds he cansee things well and makethrows down the field,”Agresta said.

“He opened some eyes incamp with his footwork. He’s a really good athlete. Before it is all said and donehe is going to leave his ownmark here at NorthlakeChristian,” Agresta said.

Agresta said he and hiscoaching staff feel goodabout the Wolverines’offensive line and are prettysolid up front.

He talked about Shorterand Risher anchoring theWolverines’ O-line as thebookend tackles last yearalong with Kuracka thestarting left guard.

James Tompkins andGarrett Loupe are workinghard to see where they fit inalong the offensive front.

“They both played quitea bit last year. We had anAll-State center in ColeShorter so depending onwho falls in that role isgoing to have some bigshoes to fill,” Agresta said.

Will Sigl (6-1, 205), who

was the third tight end lastseason brings unquestionedtoughness to the position.

“Before he’s done hemight be the best to comeout of this school at thatposition,” Agresta said.

Sigl, a two-way per-former, also gets the start-ing nod replacing ShawnBurst, the Wolverines’hard-nosed middle backer, who was named theDistrict 8-2A DefensiveMVP last year with 116tackles.

“There is a name changeand a number change at themiddle linebacker positionbut both Sigl and Burst playthe game the same way andthat is all out with hard-nosed effort,” Agresta said.

Agresta said he’s excitedabout this season.

“We don’t want theseboys to live in anyone’sshadow. Our theme goinginto the season is kind of

cast your own shadow don’tlive in anyone else’s, castyour own. This is an inter-esting group. They’re not asvocal as some in the pastbut they sure have workedjust as hard. There’s a lot oftalent that’s going to getunveiled as the season goesalong that people maybedidn’t know was here,”Agresta said.

Aaron Agresta, the son ofthe head coach, is a newedition to the Wolverines’staff and will be workingwith the secondary and thewide receivers.

“When I was a defensivecoordinator up north inYoungstown (Ohio) Aaronplayed football for us atYoungstown ChristianSchool and was a quarter-back who threw 18 touch-down passes his senioryear. He was an all-statedefensive back interceptingsix passes. He also had a

nice little college career atGeneva College in Penn-sylvania,” coach Agrestasaid.

The head coach saidwhen his son (Aaron)moved down to Louisianaand a coaching spot came

available he figured itwould probably be a nicelittle fit and it’s worked outwell. Agresta jokingly saidhis son knows who thehead coach is because theyhave had that discussionmore than one time.

Pearl River’s Rebels are ready for anew season and is putting last year’swinless campaign in the rearview mir-ror.

Pearl River enters this season hav-ing lost 13-consecutive regular seasongames, 14 overall.

“We don’t talk about last year,” sec-ond-year coach Chris Thomas said.

“We put last year behind us. Wetalked about it a little bit, but after wetalked about it, we put it to rest,”Thomas said.

Thomas enters his second year asthe head coach and 11th at the school.

Offensively, the Rebels are running avariation of the shotgun wing-T thisseason, which is a change from themultiple sets they ran last year.

Pearl River returns four starters onthe offensive side of the ball in sopho-more Chase Moore along with threejuniors in running backs BrentBourgeois and Aaron Roberson andcenter Aaron Davis.

Moore got some valuable experi-ence last season by starting everygame.

Moore said his freshman yearshould help him this season.

“Now when I get into certain situa-tions that I didn’t know what to dothen, now I will know,” Moore said.

He talked about the improvementshe’s made.

“We’ve been working onthrowing a lot more andfootwork. That’s helped mea lot and knowing I havefaith in my receivers tocatch the ball,” Moore said.

Coach Thomas said hissignal caller has moreknowledge.

“We feel like he’ll bemore comfortable on thefield on Friday nights thanwhat he was last year,”Thomas said.

The wide receiver issophomore MarquesheoOdom, while senior TavinSteele handles tight endduties. Both are newcomersto the starting lineup.

Thomas talked aboutOdom.

“He came out in thespring and showed ussomething,” Thomas said.“He’s the kind of guy thatcan also play a little quar-

terback. We plan on beingable to do little differentthings with that.”

Bourgeois will be one ofthe backs counted on tomake receptions out of thebackfield.

Moore said Bourgeois isvery reliable.

“He’s got good stronghands, good ball security, knows how to run downhilland can make more yardsafter the catch,” Mooresaid.

Besides Bourgeois andRoberson, senior JulianCarter switches from line-backer and adds power tothe running backs.

Bourgeois gave the dif-ference between Robersonand Carter’s running styles.

“Aaron is more of the oneto get to the outside andpass everyone up. (Julian)goes up the middle andpowers through there,”Bourgeois said.

Coach Thomas saidCarter is a big strong player.

“Hopefully he can kindof be more of a power run-ner. That’s what I want him

to become. He’s still got theability to make some peoplemiss every once in a while,”Thomas said.

The newcomersto the starting lineup aresenior outside linebackerBrandon Billiot and seniorcornerback Jordan Vick-nair. Delaune is the leadingreturning tackler for theRebels. Coach Thomas saidthere’s a battle for a startingnose guard, linebacker andcornerback spot.

Warren enters his sec-ond year as a starter.

“In 7-on-7s, we’ve reallybeen working hard on get-ting our coverages down,”Warren said.

“Hopefully this year, weshould have a lot of experi-ence in the secondary andwe should be pretty good,”Warren said.

Coach Thomas saidWarren is kind of like the

play caller on defense.“He’s the free safety.

Hopefully all of that pansout and the experience andconfidence about himself,”Warren said.

Thomas said Warren’sbiggest strength is knowl-edge.

“He does a good job ofreacting. He does a good jobof checking and he wants tolearn. If you try to showhim something, he’s veryattentive to trying to pick itup and do it right,” Thomassaid.

Pearl River goes for itsfirst win of 2011 Sept. 2,opening the regular seasonwith a home game againstthe De La Salle Cavaliers.

Pope John Paul II’s Jaguars had agood year in 2010, but want this one tobe better.

Last season, the Jaguars were run-ner-up in District 8-2A to NorthlakeChristian School at 3-1, but collected a17-14 playoff victory over Ferriday asthe No. 24 seed. They lost the nextweek to Riverside Academy 33-19 andfinished 8-4.

Jaguars’ coach Mark Jeanmardenters his fourth season at PJP with a19-14 record.

“We got the taste of what it felt liketo move into the playoffs and have asuccessful season,” Jeanmard said.“Everybody from players to coaches toparents and administration wants it.We can’t forget what we’ve done, which is we got to where we are thelast three years because we workedhard. That’s what we have to continueto do and not get caught up with lastyear.”

Pope John Paul II’s roster featuresjust 14 seniors. The Jaguars return 10starters, five each on offense anddefense.

The Jaguars run the double-wingoffense. Junior quarterback KyleNoonan, who played his freshman yearat Hancock High in Mississippi, replaces graduate Clyde Perkins undercenter. Noonan had to sit out last yeardue to the move, but is ready to go thisseason.

Noonan talked about his widereceiving corps.

“Probably my big deep threat will be(Evan) Labat,” Noonan said. “He is thefastest guy on the team without a

doubt. I’ve got (Sean) Bruhn. He’s 6-4and whenever I want to look good, I’mgoing to throw it up to him and he’lltake care of it for me.”

Bruhn is a junior tight end. He ledthe team in receiving with more than200 yards and five touchdowns.

Jeanmard said Noonan would befun to watch.

“He’s one of the more athletic kidswe’ve had here at any position. He’s aleft-handed quarterback and reads

defenses very well. He can throw a ballpretty good,” Jeanmard said.

Jeanmard said Noonan is also agood teacher.

“We worked on routes without afootball, just how receivers do things. He’s over there coaching them up, say-ing, ‘hey look, when you run, this iswhen I’m going to throw you the ball.’

“One of the good thingsabout Ryan (Noonan) isbesides being a very-goodplayer, he’s a very-goodteach

Bruhn said Noonan is agood passer, who is accu-rate and good at readingdefenses.

Besides Noonan, the restof the backfield includessenior running back QuinnFiore, senior fullback KyleCanulette and junior run-ning back Greg Cavalier.

Fiore finished 2010 withmore than 700 yards rush-ing and 10 TDs.

Fiore said the Jags havegood depth at the position. He said they have confi-dence in all of their backs.

“All of our backfield cancatch the ball and they also

run the ball, so they’re pret-ty good,” Fiore said. “Wetrust them all in the passing(game) and running theball.”

The Jaguars’ offensiveline, which features seniorsCorey Frederickson (6-foot,200 pounds), Kyle Roubel

The Jaguars will base outof a 4-4 with six newstarters. The newcomers includejunior back Labat, seniorlineman Robert Hattier, senior back Luis Delgadoand Teddy Macke and jun-ior linebacker GregCavalier.

“Defensively, athletically,I think we can cover people, they just need to get outthere, experience it and doit,” Jeanmard said. “A lot ofemphasis was put into thelearning of what to do.”

Bruhn handles the mid-dle linebacker role for PJP.

“The line’s a little smallerthan last year, but we’remuch faster than we weretoo,” Bruhn said.

Fairchild, a second-teamall-state player last year, handles the strong sidelinebacker position.

On special teams, TeddyMacke returns as the placekicker.

“I went to Ray Guy’skicking camp at Tulane.Almost everyday, I’m outthere kicking after prac-tice,” Macke said.

Macke’s long was 45yards and said he nearlymade a 58-yarder just wide.

It’s a time of change in Salmen’s

football program as young players gettheir opportunity to help continue thesuccess the Spartans have had of late.

Salmen coach Jerry Leonard, whohas a 65-31 career record in nine yearsas the Spartans’ headman, said theyhave a young team as far as game expe-rience, but one that is talented andenjoys being around each other.

“I think it’s a good chemistry,”Leonard said. “The biggest questionmark for us right now is who’s going tostep up and fill the shoes of some of theguys who graduated. It’s a little tooearly for us to tell that right now. Wehave some good ideas, but until thelights come on and until we get into areal game, it’s just going to be a ques-tion mark hanging over our heads.”

In the last four seasons, Salmen hasposted a 35-13 record with two statesemifinal appearances.

Five players off of last years’ squadsigned national letters of intent and areplaying college football, includingDaniel Sams (Kansas State University),Matt Lipham (Southern Illinois),Jamal Robinson (University ofLouisiana at Lafayette), MalcolmPichon (Louisiana Tech) andChrishawn Dupuy (Miami of Ohio).

This year, Salmen returns just fivestarters, two each offensively anddefensively along with senior

kicker/punter Chris Gulino. The Spartans operate out of the

multiple spread offense. Senior centerBobby Tate (5-foot-11, 245 pounds) andjunior wide receiver Chuck Bakerreturn to the starting lineup.

There is a battle going on at quarter-back between junior Aaron Hall and

sophomore Raymond Crochet. “They’re all working that position

and they’re all getting better. Only timeis going to tell who’s going to end upgetting the majority of the reps at quar-terback,” Leonard said.

Also, Leonard said juniorEric Bell, who is listed atwide receiver, would be aslash type of player, whowill be called upon to doseveral different jobs.Leonard said Bell could bea wildcat type of quarter-back since he has great feetand he’s a good runner.

“He does great thingswith the ball in his hands,”Leonard said. “He canthrow it as well. He’s goingto play a bunch of differentroles for us and we don’tknow where we’re going topin him down just yet or ifwe’re going to pin himdown at all. We may keepmoving him all over thefield. He’s a guy we’re excit-ed about.”

Besides Baker and Bell, the rest of the widereceivers are juniors ShawnBrickley along with sopho-mores Barron Crawfordand Deonté Cooper.

Bell said the wide outsare looking fine, but saidthe main thing they need towork on is catching firstand then running.

“We try to run before weget the ball. We just gottafocus on catching it first,”Bell said.

Bell said the quarter-backs are doing well.

“They’re putting the ballinto our eyesight so we cancatch it, right on target,”Bell said.

Baker, who started forthe first time last season, said he improved as the2010 season went on, whilehe was adjusting to thespeed of the game.

He talked about howtough the transition was.

“The more I practiced, itwasn’t that much tougherfor me because when Istarted running and block-ing against people bigger

than me, it started toughen-ing me up,” Baker said.

The running back issophomore Chris Thomas.

The offensive line con-sists of just one returningstarter in Tate.

The rest of the groupincludes senior right guardJabari James (5-10, 255),junior right tackle ScottLandry (6-2, 275), juniorleft guard Marcus Cochran(6-1, 286) and junior lefttackle Devon Gauthreaux(6-3, 265).

Landry spoke about theline.

“We’ve got size up front. We need to work together, stay on our drills, stay ontop of what we have to do,work as a team and a unit tobe successful,” Landry said.

Defensively, the Spartansare a 3-4 group.

Junior tackle SterlingDoss (6-1, 220) and inside

linebacker Emanuel Terrellare the two returningstarters. Also playing on theline are senior nose guardDevon Turner and juniortackle Myron Forristier.

“We have a smallergroup than last year obvi-ously,” Leonard said.“When you lose Malcolm(Pichon) and T.J. (Price),it’s tough to replace. But inthe same turn, I think we’repossibly going to be a small-er, quicker front overall, butwe’ll be missing that bigman in the middle.”

The outside linebackersinclude junior Nick Smithalong with sophomoresJoey McCleod, Victor Kirbyand Trevon Watts. Theinside guys are junior LarryWarren, and sophomoreZac Brown.

The defensive backs arejunior corners HenryGlover, D’Lane Harris and

Kenneth Vidato, while Belland senior Reggie Whitehandle free safety dutiesand Gerrard Batiste is thestrong safety.

Coach Leonard said theDBs are very athletic.

“I think we have someguys who can cover backthere,” Leonard said. “Someguys, as a group, they prob-

ably got a little experienceplaying than some of thoseother guys at some otherpositions.”

Senior Gulino is the kick-er and punter.

“This is his fourth yearkicking for us,” Leonardsaid. “He has been veryconsistent. He’s handled allof the kicking duties for us

that we’ve asked him tohandle and we’re excited tohave him back. He’s one ofthose factors that we’re nottrying to replace or any-thing else. We’re just glad tohave him. Our kicking gameis solid with him there.”

Salmen opens the regu-lar season on the road Sept.2 against Northshore.

The purple and gold open anotheryear Labor Day Weekend with highhopes of another successful season.

LSU enters 2011 ranked third in thepreseason espn.com poll, while theassociated press has them fourth. TheUniversity of Oklahoma tops bothpolls. Southeastern Conference foeAlabama is No. 2 in the two polls.

Coach Les Miles, who enters hisseventh season with the Tigers, post-ing a 62-17 mark at LSU.

He said it’s not where you’re rankedin the preseason poll.

“Rankings don’t really make a dif-ference, you just have to play it out andsee where you’re at,” Miles said.

Miles led his club to the 2007National Championship and the 2007SEC title. Miles is the fastest coach toreach the 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60career win mark with LSU.

Last season, LSU went 11-2 and fin-ished with a 41-24 Cotton Bowl victoryover Texas A&M in Cowboys’ Stadium.

Two former St. Tammany highschool players are on LSU’s 105-manroster in 2008 Northshore graduateoffensive tackle Chris Faulk (6-foot-6,316 pounds) and 2009 Slidell graduatewide receiver Armand Williams (6-3,195).

Faulk entered last season as a back-up to Joseph Barksdale and earned astarting spot at right tackle the finaltwo regular season games against OleMiss and Arkansas.

He was in during the University ofTennessee game and when StevanRidley had his game-winning touch-down run after the Volunteers wereflagged for 12-men on the field. LSUcaptured that game 16-14.

This season, Faulk is slated to startat left tackle, the same position heplayed at Northshore. Faulk said thetwo starts helped him out tremendous-ly since he got to learn the SEC.

“Those two games got me ready forthis year,” Faulk said. “Les Miles gaveme the opportunity to show what I’vegot. Now I go back to the leftsidewhere I’m most comfortable.”

He said the key for success is exe-cuting on every down and playing hardthrough the whistle.

At a July LSU Tiger Tour stop, Miles

talked about Faulk’s attributes.“He’s a big, strong, powerful man.

He will be a dominate player as he con-tinues to learn the position,” Milessaid.

Williams was redshirted last season. He said last year helped him a lot withweight training. He said he learnedfrom the older guys how to become abetter receiver and team player.

“With that redshirt, it enabled me togain the knowledge of the game, become a student of the sport andunderstand what I need to do tobecome successful,” Williams said.

At that Tiger Tour stop, Miles saidWilliams is early in his career, but isdeveloping very nicely.

He also said Williams is very athlet-ic, physically capable, runs fast, jumpsand is very explosive.

Also locally, 2011 NorthlakeChristian School graduate ShawnBurst is scheduled to walk on.

Director Michael Bonnette said atpress time 2011 St. Paul’s graduateMickey Johnson, a defensive tackle, isstill going through the NCAA process.

“Hopefully he’ll get cleared and canreport to camp before school starts(Aug. 22),” Bonnette said.

Senior Jordan Jefferson, who start-ed every game last season, is theTigers’ starting quarterback. Last sea-son, he completed 56.5 percent of hispasses for 1,411 yards with seventouchdowns and 10 interceptions. Healso ran for 450 yards and seven scores.

Williams said he trusts Jefferson.“Jordan is one of the best guys and

one of the best leaders you’ll evermeet,” Williams said. “I feel like he hasalso taught me how to become a teamplayer and put me in a position to getmyself within a nice set of four years.”

LSU has seven preseason All-SECplayers, two offensive, in junior widereceiver Rueben Randle and juniorlineman Alex Hurst. The defensive

players are DBs junior MorrisClaiborne and sophomore TyrannMathieu, linemen sophomoreBarkevious Mingo and sophomoreSam Montgomery along with seniorlinebacker Ryan Baker.

Randle is second team. Last year, hewas second on the team with 33 catch-es for 544 yards and three touch-downs.

Hurst (6-6, 329) is on the third team.Claiborne is the only Tigers’ first-

teamer. Last season, he topped LSUwith five interceptions and averaged20.2 yards per return. He was also inon 37 stops, while posting one sack andbreaking up six passes.

Southeastern Louisiana Universityreturns 11 starters and 37 letterwinnerswith the Lions opening up Sept. 3against the Tulane Green Wave in theLouisiana Superdome.

The Lions open their five-gamehome schedule in week two hostingSavannah State followed by SouthernMississippi.

The Southland Conference roadopener is scheduled for Sept. 24against McNeese State, which ispicked to win the conference in the preseason poll.

Head coach Mike Lucas, whobecame the Lions 14th head coach in2006, said his club faces a very toughschedule.

“Three of our first four ballgamesare very difficult with three of them onthe road. We don’t have time to slideinto anything. We can’t afford to have aslow start. We need to get after it rightaway opening with Tulane,” Lucassaid.

Lucas said the program graduated18 seniors last year so they have somespots that don’t have returningstarters.

“I think our athleticism level hasincreased in those positions. We arehaving some really good battles forpositions. I think that’s a good signwhen you start to build depth in thatway,” Lucas said.

Lucas said his club has a pretty goodbattle at quarterback.

“Brian Young has shown great lead-ership and had a very good spring. Hehas worked very hard through thesummer,” Lucas said.

Young played in six games last sea-son, completing 86-of-164 passes (52.4percent) for 1,012 yards with four TDsand seven interceptions. He averaged168.7 yards per contest. Lucas saidNathan Stanley (6-5, 215), an Ole Misstransfer, is a specimen at quarterback.

“He is starting to pick up theoffense. His reads and decision makingis becoming second nature to him. Heis starting to feel pretty comfortable,”the coach added.

The Lions’ outstanding seniorreceiver Simmie Yarborough (6-1,205), the school’s all-time leadingreceiver with 168 receptions and 27receiving TDs, ranks second in receiv-

ing yardage (2,002). He needs just 343yards to pass former Lion All-American Felton Huggins.

Yarborough, a three-time All-Southland Conference performer,topped the Lions with 60 receptionsfor 709 yards with a team-high ninescores.

Lucas said the receiving corps is thethird leading receivers coming back inyardage and touchdowns from last sea-son in the country.

“Our wide receiver position rightnow is our strength with Simmie, sen-ior Brandon Collins along with KoryTheodore. We really have someweapons at wide receiver,” Lucas said.

Collins hauled in 56 receptions for875 yards with four TDs. Theodorehad 34 catches for 622 yards, averagingan impressive 18.3 yards per receptionwith four scores.

Turning to the rushing game, Lucassaid Zeke Jones is ready.

“Zeke played at 248 and this year heslimmed down to 228. He’s a stepquicker and has that look in his eyes toimprove,” Lucas said.

Jones gained 380 yards, averaging3.8 yards per rush with eight touch-downs.

Lucas said last year’s leading rusherSam Fairley, who rushed for 579 yards,is battling a hip injury. Lucas saidFairley hasn’t been at full strength.

Lucas said he’s been impressed withthe younger running backs likePonchatoula’s Michael Chaney andVarnado High sophomore LaTruanWeary.

“Those two guys had great springsand conditioning programs. They canreally fly. Along with red shirt fresh-man Jordan Wells we have a prettygood stable of running backs,” Lucassaid.

Switching to the defense, Lucas saidit would be tough to replace the team’stop two tacklers who graduated inlinebacker Mark Newbill, who is theschool’s all-time leading tackler (401tackles) and Tommy Connors (98) lastyear.

“Those two guys are names every-body knows about. They were four-year starters and were exceptionalplayers,” Lucas added.

Lucas said the D-line is the strengthand he feels good about those guys. Hementioned senior Devin Boutwell,Jerrod Black and junior TramainLucas, who is one of the team’sstrongest kids (squatted 600 poundsand benched 500) along with DevanWalker.

Lucas said he likes his linebackersjunior Tay Alford and true freshmanKaleb Muse of Ponchatoula High, whois playing very well, and is on the vergeof moving into that No. 1 linebacker

position. Lucas said junior cornerbackRobert Alford (Hammond High) ishealthy and may be as good as anybody in the conference.

The Lions have four former St.Tammany Parish athletes on the rosterincluding red shirt freshmen defensiveends Justin Church and Scott Kortefrom Fontainebleau High along withCovington High grad sophomorepunter Matt McCormick and St. Paul’sfreshman linebacker Tyler Tourelle.

Coach Lucas spoke about each St.Tammany player.

“Justin (Church) has had a great offseason program. He gained some goodweight. Last year, he had a shoulderinjury and we got a medical red shirton him. He is running with the firstteam and doing a very fine job,” Lucassaid.

“He plays very hard, has a great atti-tude and is a tremendous young man.”

Church (6-4, 230) played in twogames last year before spraining a jointin his left shoulder.

“I had a pretty good camp and I’mstaying healthy. I’ve been getting repswith the 1’s so things are going prettygood. I’m fighting for the starting spotand I just want to step up to help theteam,” Church said.

“My early time last yearhelped me and I know thedefensive scheme. I like toget after the quarterbackand I’ve been able to devel-op my pass rushing tech-nique a lot more than inhigh school,” Churchadded.

“We didn’t have thegreatest season last year (2-9) so we are looking formore wins this year. Wehad a great camp and havea good team attitude.”

Church is majoring inbusiness administrationcarrying a 3.0 GPA.

Lucas talked about ScottKorte (6-4, 250).

“We red shirted Scottlast year and he has madevery good strides fromspring ball till now. Welook at him as a pass rushguy. We’ve got him in someof our packages and that’swhere he fits it,” Lucas

said.Lucas spoke about

Tourelle.“Tyler is doing very well.

He was here in the summerworking out with us and hehas put on some good mus-cle weight. He’s a little

ahead of the learning curveright now,” Lucas said.

Lucas said Tourelle is onthe depth chart for specialteams.

“He is on the front linefor kickoff returns so weare taking a look at him in

Tulane head football coach BobToledo is in his fifth season with theGreen Wave and hoping this is the yearhis club reaches its goal of making abowl game appearance.

The Green Wave 4-8 last year has anambitious 13-game schedule without abye week, which will present addition-al challenges for the club.

When coach Toledo was asked whya 13-game campaign, he said, “If youhave a chance to make a trip to Hawaii, you should do it.”

The Greenies close out the yearmaking a trip across the Pacific to theisland of Hawaii to take on theWarriors in the season finale Nov. 26.

“Taking on that 13th game, locationhad everything to do with it. Mai Tai’sin the sun isn’t too bad when you thinkabout it,” Toledo said.

The Green Wave opens at homehosting Southeastern LouisianaUniversity at the Superdome Sept. 3.

“Our goal is to make it to a bowlgame this year. With that additionalgame on the schedule, we’ll have towin seven games to make an appear-ance,” the fifth-year coach said.

“I think we have built a solid foun-dation for the future. We’ve played alot of young players 20 freshmen lastyear and 18 the year before. We havelots of experience and no longer are weyoung or inexperienced,” Toledoadded.

“This team has lots of enthusiasmand has some good experiences thathave carried over,” Toledo said.

Red-shirt junior quarterback RyanGriffin (6-5, 218), a two-year starter, isback to pull the Green Wave trigger.

“There is no question Ryan has beena big leader for us and his teammatesselected him as the offensive team cap-tain,” Toledo said.

Toledo praised Griffin’s tremendouswork ethic.

“Ryan works extremely hard tolearn about what defenses are trying todo against him. Ryan is like a playercoach and led the off-season summerconditioning program,” Toledo said.

“He continues to prove his leader-ship value to the team and was instru-mental in our running and throwingprogram. He helps his teammates

learn the offensive sys-tem by holding videosessions,” Toledo said.

Griffin completed223-of-372 passes (59.9percent) for 2,371yardswith 14 touchdownsand eight intercep-tions last season.

Griffin said he likesthrowing out of coach Toledo’s prostyle offense.

“We are really excited about gettingthe season started. Roll Wave! We havea bunch of good players returningalong with some talented freshmanwho have stepped up,” Griffin said.

Griffin talked about the 13-gameschedule.

“Playing 13 games this season with-out a bye presents an added challenge.Depth is going to be a key and we havemore quality depth than we have hadin a while,” Griffin added.

“We are looking forward to the tripto Hawaii but that is a long way away. Our goal is to win a Conference USAtitle and make a bowl game. For that tohappen, we have to take care of busi-ness early on,” Griffin said.

Griffin underwent two off-seasonsurgeries in January on his left non-throwing shoulder and his right ankle.

“I definitely feel like I’m 100 per-cent. I’m healed up ready to go andtake that first regular season hit,” thequarterback said.

Griffin said he likes the makeup ofhis big offensive line and starter EricJones, a red-shirt junior, is one of hisroommates so there is a lot of footballdialogue that takes place off the field.

“We have a good offensive unit, which has been here for a while. I’mconfident playing behind them,”Griffin said.

Griffin said he felt he became amuch more vocal leader late last year.

“I feel like I stepped into the vocalaspect of being a leader and hope tohave that carry into this season,” theQB said.

Griffin said he has some talentedreceivers in Ryan Grant, Joe Kemp andWilson Van Hooser, a slot back, whoruns 4.3 forty.

Griffin carries a 3.3 GPA and ismajoring in business management andwants to obtain a Masters in finance.

Coach Toledo said he is looking for

big things from sopho-more running backOrleans Darkwa (6-0,214).

“He’s a great kid andwas the fourth leadingrusher in the nation as afreshman despite miss-ing 2 1/2 games due toinjury. He suffered a

torn elbow ligament and a concus-sion,” Toledo said.

Darkwa topped the Green Waverushing for 925 yards on 184 carries, averaging 5.0 yards per carry with 11TDs. He also caught 17 passes for 155yards, averaging 9.1 yards per recep-tion.

“What a great name a for kid playingin New Orleans. I may start calling himNew Orleans if he continues to put upthe numbers we expect him to,” Toledoquipped.

The coach said it would be tough toreplace Casey Robottom (56 catchesand 663 yards) in the passing gamereferring to Robottom as Mr. Clutchwhen he was with the Wave. Toledosaid he is looking to Ryan Grant (33catches and 515 yards with four scores)to help fill the void adding that Granthas been named to the Fred BiletnikoffAward watch list with the award pre-sented annually to the nation’s out-standing college football receiver.

“We will definitely try to keep Grantinvolved in our passing game and lethim produce,” Toledo said.

Toledo said he likes his stout offen-sive line saying the middle of the line isstrong. The Green Wave returns threeof five starters along the O-line includ-ing red-shirt senior center Joey Ray (6-3, 310), who moved over from rightguard along with senior left guardHarris Howard (6-4, 293) and juniorright guard Zach Morgan (6-3, 305).

“Our tackles have played a bunchwith junior right tackle Eric Jones (6-6, 308) and sophomore left tackle PatHusain (6-6, 298), who logged qualitytime as a true freshmen last year,”Toledo said.

Defensively, Toledo talked aboutred-shirt junior middle linebackerTrent Mackey (5-11, 230), who attend-ed Carencro High School. He was the17th leading tackler in the nation lastyear. Mackey played in all 12 gamestopping the Wave with 63 solo stops

and 61 assists. He had 7.5 stops for losswith an interception, while forcingthree fumbles and recovering one.

“Trent has a great nose for the balland plays with instinct. He is a defen-sive playmaker,” Toledo said.

The former Duke transfer, who pos-sesses 4.5-speed, said he thinks theGreen Wave has a great defensivescheme basing out of a 4-3 dependingon the personnel groupings.

“Our players have worked hard thissummer gearing up for the season.

The D-line is doing a tremendousjob keeping the offensive linemen offof me so I can make plays and that’swhat I love to do,” Mackey said.

Mackey said there would be a cou-ple keys to being successful this year.

“Everyone is committed and webelieve we can win. We have to keepup the intensity and stay focused. Wehave to play fast and be fundamentallysound,” Mackey added.

“I love it here. It is a great programwith tremendous coaches. My line-backer coach Doug Colman played atNebraska. He has a great idea on thelinebacker position and how it shouldbe played,” Mackey said.

Mackey said he stepped up his train-ing regimen this summer.

“I’m faster this year and I move wellsideline to sideline. I’m continuing towork really hard trying to become thatperfect linebacker being able to stopboth the run and pass,” Mackey said.

Mackey said the Green Wave defen-sive backs are doing a great job in cov-erage.

“We have a really fast group in thesecondary with juniors Shakiel Smithand Ryan Travis,” Mackey added.

Coach Toledo said Ryan Travis, whowas in on 67 tackles last season, is mak-ing big strides at corner back.

“Ryan has a bunch of interceptionsthis spring and is making big plays. Weare really pleased with his progress,”Toledo said.

Shakiel Smith totaled 90 tackles lastseason including 60 individual stopswith three interceptions.

Coach Toledo said he is looking forbig contributions from red-shirt seniordefensive end Dezman Moses (6-3,248), who made an impact last seasonwith 51 stops. Moses was in the top 10in Conference USA tackles for loss(11.5 for 49 yards) and sacks (6).

The lockout is over and the Blackand Gold are working toward whatwill hopefully be another playoff run.

Last season, the New Orleans Saintsbattled injuries, mostly at runningback, on their way to an 11-5 record. They lost in the wildcard round of theplayoffs 41-36 against Seattle.

Their top three running backsPierre Thomas, Reggie Bush and ChrisIvory all had injuries that cost themtime. They combined to miss 22 regu-lar season games. Ivory and Thomasdid not play in the postseason game.

Thomas got in just six games. He ranfor 269 yards and two touchdowns.Bush missed eight games and ran for150 yards, while tallying 208 receivingyards and three scores. He played thepostseason game and finished with 37receiving yards, 12 on the ground.

Saints leading rusher Ivory, who had716 yards and five TDs missed fourgames.

That was part of the reason theSaints struggled running the ball. NewOrleans was ranked 28th in the NFLafter going for 1,519 yards and ninetouchdowns.

Houston’s Arian Foster topped theSaints by himself at 1,619 yards and 16TDs. Foster was one of eight backs tohave more rushing scores than theSaints. Pittsburgh’s RahardMendenhall and New England’sBenJarvus Green-Ellis both finishedwith 13. Atlanta’s Michael Turner and

Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson tallied 12each and Tennessee’s Chris Johnson,San Diego’s Mike Tolbert along withCleveland’s Peyton Hillis all had 11.

With that said, New Orleans addedto its rushing attack with a pair oftrades and a free agency pickup.

The Saints made a draft day tradewith the New England Patriots to landAlabama’s Mark Ingram. Then in lateJuly, New Orleans sent Bush to Miamiand then picked up free agent DarrenSproles from San Diego.

Saints’ coach Sean Payton enters hissixth season with a 49-31 regular sea-son record (.612 winning percentage)and 53-33 overall (.616). Under Payton,

the Saints have been in the playoffsthree times, while capturing two divi-sion titles and Super Bowl 44.

At an Aug. 6 press conference,Payton spoke about the production ofSproles.

“The first thing you realize aboutDarren is that he’s a quick study,”Payton said. “From a terminologystandpoint, there have been changes, but it doesn’t look like that’s slowedhim down any. He’s quick with goodacceleration and each day you see that.He does a lot of things well in thethrowing game and in the passinggame, he’s versatile. Those are all real-ly good attributes and they’re whatwere hoping for.”

The Saints passing attack was inhigh gear last season. The team wasthird in the NFL at 4,441 yards and 30touchdowns. Only the IndianapolisColts (4,609) and San Diego Chargers(4,519) threw for more yards.

Quarterback Drew Brees was thirdin the league with 4,620 yards, whilethrowing for 33 touchdowns and 22interceptions.

Brees’ favorite target was MarquesColston, who caught 84 passes for1,023 yards and seven touchdowns.Lance Moore, who the Saints resignedthis offseason was second on the clubwith 66 catches, 763 yards and a team-leading eight scores.

Despite the inability to generate aconsistent running game, New Orleansstill averaged 24 points per game.

New Orleans did a good job ofresigning some of their own freeagents, including Moore and offensivelineman Jermon Bushrod.

Six-time pro bowler (2001-06) andformer Bears’ center Olin Kreutzjoined the Saints after being a freeagent. Kreutz enters his 14th season.

At an Aug. 6 press conference,Kreutz said the Saints are a great team.

“I’m happy to be here,” Kreutz said.“The opportunity is to win a SuperBowl. That’s the kind of team they’vebuilt and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Defensively, the Saints were rankedfourth, allowing 306.2 yards a game.San Diego (271.6), Pittsburgh (276.8)and the New York Jets (291.5) wereahead of New Orleans.

The defensive unit got a boost thisoffseason, adding a pair of defensivelinemen. Shaun Rogers (6-foot-4, 350pounds) comes to the Saints afterspending the past three years with theCleveland Browns. Rogers, who spenthis first seven years with Detroit, hasbeen in on 482 tackles, while making37.5 sacks, defending 26 passes. He’salso got four forced fumbles and in2007, he intercepted a pass andreturned it 66 yards for a score.

The Saints acquired AubrayoFranklin from San Francisco. Theyalso drafted Cameron Jordan from theUniversity of California with its firstpick in the opening round.

Like they did on offense, they wereable to resign some of their own defen-sively, including safety Roman Harperand linebacker Clint Ingram, whomissed last season, while recoveringfrom micro-fracture surgery

Middle linebacker Jonathan Vilmareturns after leading the club with 105tackles. Safety Roman Harper was sec-ond at 98, followed by linebacker ScottShanle 76 and cornerback Jabari Greer61.

One area that helped the Saints getto and ultimately win Super Bowl 44was the giveaway/takeaway stat.

One year after being ranked third at+11, the Saints dropped 20 spots, fin-ishing at -6. New Orleans committed31 turnovers, 22 picks and nine fum-bles, while the defense forced 25. Theunit intercepted nine passes andrecovered 16 fumbles.
