RAKNEWSRAK FTZ’S FITNESS AND WELLNESS PROGRAMME ACHIEvES HEALTHY GROWTHHELP, LAUNCHED BY RAK FTZ, IS DESIGNED TO BOOST EMPLOYEE MOTIvATION AND PERFORMANCE

Ras Al Khaimah, July 17, 2012: Reinforcing its commitment to boost productivity and create a healthy and positive work environment, Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone (RAK FTZ) – one of the fastest-growing and most cost-effective free trade zones in the UAE – today announced that its unique fitness and wellness programme for employees has achieved enviable growth within months of its launch.Healthy Employee Lifestyle Programme (HELP), an initiative of Human Resource Department of RAK FTZ, is aimed at equipping the employees with the knowledge and power of a healthy and active lifestyle through focused fitness and sports awareness campaigns and activities, and it has received amazing satisfaction rate since its launch earlier this year.

The RAK FTZ HELP initiative has proven to go a long way in increasing employee productivity, reducing absenteeism, enhancing corporate brand image, reducing work-related stress and sickness levels, and also, in helping retain/recruit staff within the free zone. The mission of HELP is to provide advice to and develop healthier lifestyle choices in employees to cut health risk factors, improve central wellbeing, and maintain a productive, active and satisfied workforce.

The wellbeing and fitness programme was launched amidst concerning health trends in the region. According to a study by McKinsey & Co., healthcare costs across the GCC are expected

to increase from the current USD 12 billion to USD 60 billion by 2025 – a large majority due to stress at work. Stress has now passed backache and musculoskeletal pain as the biggest single source of sickness absence at work. Latest research has found levels of stress at work to be reasonably high among the employees in the GCC.

Commenting on the success of the initiative, Maryam Al Murshedi Al Shehhi, Deputy Director General, RAK FTZ, said: “Changing health issues and individual lifestyles – especially in the Gulf – requires a new approach on how we manage our health. With a view to improve productivity, reduce employee health risks and injuries, and enhance employee morale and retention, we launched the HELP activities, which have achieved significant success rates since early 2012.”

The HELP activities involve improving dietary habits of the employees by providing information on healthy food products, giving healthy eating tips and distributing healthy food samples. It also encompasses an increase in the physical activities available to employees by promoting various types of exercises, providing tips on different kinds of sports, and organising sport events.

It has paved the way in cutting down on health risk factors by providing medical information to the employees, and by organising medical campaigns. The work environment and employee satisfaction has improved by reducing the stress level through work-life

balance tips and seminars, and by ensuring that the workplace of each employee is suitable and healthy to be a part of.

To further the cause, RAK FTZ HELP initiative organised a wide array of events and activities such as indoor and outdoor sports, self-defence training programmes, awareness campaigns, fun activities and competitions on healthy food/eating, regular distribution of healthy food samples, medical consultations and seminars, first-aid training programmes, social health campaigns, and comfortable and effective seating arrangements, among others.

Al Shehhi added: “We were amazed by the response to our initiative. Over 600 people joined the eight events, which were organized during the first half of the year. The overall satisfaction rate of the employees, which is measured through regular surveys, was 83%. For instance, in the first quarter of the year, our activities included a ‘Talk to Your Doctor’ event as part of the ‘Medical Week’, which achieved 94% satisfaction rate. Other events in the first quarter, such as the RAK Half Marathon, in which 116 employees run in Team Relay; or Sahaja Yoga Meditation Week, in which we were combating the stress level, were also very well received. In the second quarter, we continued the successful trend with the ‘Healthy Food Day’, Spring Rowing Regatta, ‘Sweat Your Stress Out’ Week and World No Tobacco day. This all positively reflects on our employee engagement and participation in the programmes.”

With such response, the HELP initiative is set to grow from strength to strength in the second half of 2012. Noha Salem, HR Manager, RAK FTZ, said: “Proactive workplace health and wellbeing strategies can promote and develop a healthy business culture. Various studies confirm a direct link between productivity levels and the general health of the workforce. According to research, the least healthy employees are 25% less productive than the healthiest. So, this will not only reduce the healthcare costs of the organisation, but also benefit them through improved employee productivity.”

Salem added: “Continuing our healthy growth journey, we plan to launch a bevy of activities between July and December 2012, which include HELP Volleyball Tournament in July, Healthy Food Day and Cooking Competition in September, Breast Cancer Awareness campaign in October, and Rowing Regatta in December, among others. Similarly, next year, we plan to host first-aid training, mountaineering, and a work-life balance workshop through art and painting. For us, this is about providing an extra level of health and fitness support to our team – and to tell them that we care.”

In the past 12 years, the multi-award winning RAK FTZ has achieved global brand recognition as a premium and the most sought-after free trade zone and investment hub, and continues to grow from strength to strength and lives up to its reputation as the ‘Home of Business’ in the Middle East.

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that provides energy to the body’s cells.

Produced from the carbs and fats that we eat, cholesterol is extremely essential for the body to work in a proper manner; however, too much cholesterol in the body leads to its build-up in the walls of our arteries and this increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Thus, it becomes essential to lower cholesterol in your daily diet, especially if tests have proved that your levels are too high. Today, we are going to tell you about the top 8 best ways to lower your cholesterol levels.

Quit smoking. Smoking results in the inner lining of the arteries, or the endothelium, getting damaged. The carcinogens and carbon mono-oxide present in cigarette smoke result in the arteries becoming more prone to spasms, thus leading to high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Cigarette smoking lowers a person’s high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) or “good” cholesterol while raising levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol. At times, smokers can also suffer from heart palpitations that can affect their overall quality of life.

Exercise most days of the week. Whether you are trying to prevent high cholesterol or you have already been diagnosed with it, exercise is great medication. It is no rocket science, that exercise helps to lower high levels of cholesterol and keep heart diseases at bay. But the practical question that needs to be answered is “How low will my cholesterol levels go if I exercise regularly?”

Experts suggest that at least 40 minutes to 60 minutes of exercise on a daily basis helps in lowering 5 to 10% of LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol can be raised between 3 to 6%. Irrespective of whatever type, intensity and genre of exercise, you go for, it is an essential component of your cholesterol-lowering regimen.

Reduce saturated fats and banish trans fats from your diet completely. You should avoid fatty meats, egg yolks, fried foods, whole-milk dairy products and commercially baked products. This is because saturated and trans fats raise the LDL (bad) cholesterol more than the levels of dietary cholesterols itself. The recommended

daily intake of saturated fat is 20 grams or less, so watch out for foods that contain high levels of saturated or trans fat and make sure you stay below the recommended daily level.

Consume alcohol in moderation. Moderate consumption of alcohol consists of one to two alcoholic drinks per day for men and one alcoholic drink per day for women. However, if you exceed this amount then you are more likely to store fat and add to the luxury of your waistline, thus adding to your cholesterol levels.

Lose weight if you are obese/overweight. Lose weight, if you are obese and particularly around your waist. Exercise daily. Any kind of additional activity will work as well; try your hand at a mix of activities like walking, weight training, aerobics, cycling, playing sports, as this will help increase good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol and triglycerides.

Obesity can cause what’s known as insulin resistance, a condition in which the body can’t use the hormone insulin properly. Released by the pancreas, insulin turns glucose into the blood and then into energy. Insulin resistance often leads to two of the most dreadful lifestyle conditions- one is diabetes and the second one is high levels of cholesterol.

Eat more spinach. Popeye the sailor was quite right when crediting his muscle power to this green leafy vegetable. It is believed that spinach contains around 13 flavonoid compounds which keep us away from cancer , heart diseases and osteoporosis. 1/2 cup of this lutein-rich food daily guards us against heart attacks.

Go fish. Full of Omega-3 fatty acids, fishes are natural health wonders, which help in keeping heart diseases at bay. Avoid heart attacks, stroke and high cholesterol levels with the help of these potent nutrient-rich protein. According to medical experts, a diet rich in seafood, especially fish, helps in raising good cholesterol levels. Plant sources of omega-3s include soybeans, canola, flaxseeds, walnuts, and their oils.

8 BEST WAYS TO REDUCE CHOLESTEROL

HEALTH&FITNESS

Ursolic acid - a waxy substance found in apple peel - increases muscle and brown fat in mice that are on a high-fat diet.

These mice burn more calories and have reduced obesity levels, pre-diabetes and fatty liver disease than the mice that do not receive the supplement. Doctor’s and researcher’s believe that this might be helpful in reducing obesity.

Until quite recently, researchers believed that only infants had brown fat, which then disappeared during childhood. However, improved imaging techniques have shown that adults do retain a very small amount of the substance mostly in the neck and between the shoulder blades. Some studies have linked increased levels of brown fat with lower levels of obesity and healthier levels of blood sugar and blood lipid, leading to the suggestion that brown fat may be helpful in preventing obesity and diabetes.

Obesity and its associated problems such as diabetes and fatty liver disease are increasingly common global health concerns. A new study by University of Iowa researchers shows that a

AN APPLE PEEL A DAY KEEPS FAT AWAY!

natural substance found in apple peel can partially protect mice from obesity and some of its harmful effects.

The findings suggest that the substance known as ursolic acid reduces obesity and its associated health problems by increasing the amount of muscle and brown fat, two tissues recognised for their calorie-burning properties.

Ursolic acid increases muscle mass and strength in healthy mice, which is important because it might suggest a potential therapy for muscle wasting, In a study, ursolic acid was tested in mice on a high-fat diet - a mouse model of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Once again, ursolic acid increased skeletal muscle. Interestingly, it also reduced obesity, pre-diabetes and fatty liver disease.

“Since muscle is very good at burning calories, the increased muscle in ursolic acid-treated mice may be sufficient to explain how ursolic acid reduces obesity. However, it was surprising to find that ursolic acid also increased brown fat, a fantastic calorie burner. This increase in brown fat may also help protect against obesity.”

It’s one thing to wax eloquent on positivity, but quite another to be a positive person at heart.

Despite believing to have a positive outlook, we invariably weigh the cons first, consider several times before sparing a compliment, and broadcast only the odds when someone counts on us for advice. What’s more, we prefer needless sarcasm for humor, manage a wry smile when something is genuinely funny, and believe deep down that the glass is actually half empty.

We live in denial of our inherent negativity for the most part, and often wonder why the world around is so mean and reckless. At work, we never fail telling our juniors how meeting deadlines can be a tough proposition, and not to think too ‘out of the box’ to impress the boss. In short, we never tire telling all concerned how tough things can be! Unlike dogs we may not be born eternal optimists, but positivity is something that can be imbibed even if a tad forcibly; such as by trying to tweak our sense of humor, the way we react to a given situation, by being more pleasant and believing others too have a mind, and by smiling each time somebody says ‘thank you’.

While positivity is a state of mind, the answer lies in our perspective. Clinical psychologist and lifestyle advisor shares his ideas on how to be a positive person everyday.

Have the desire: First thing first, to become a positive person one must have a strong desire to be positive. And the desire will come only if you are convinced that becoming a positive person will enhance the quality of life. Positivity is like an aura, and you know you are a positive person when

people start trusting you, random people become polite with you, colleagues at work start patronising you, and you start building rapport easily.

Be realistic: Do not try to become a saint. Becoming a positive person does not mean you can never have any negative emotion or encounter any negative situation. It is the overall attitude that matters. Don’t get bogged down by failure, and disappointed when your expectations are not met. Mentally, you should always be calculating a way out of difficult situations come what may.

Experiment: Be a keen observer. Use everyday life incidents to see how you can manage them in a more positive manner. These will serve as perfect instances to turn your outlook more positive. For starters, contemplate how you could have better handled a situation by being less hostile and more indulgent. Come up with five ways that could have saved the day, and learn to take things at face value sometimes. Remember, your ability to trust the other person also reflects your genuineness.

Speech and body language: Try and make positive words a part of your daily lingo, and work on your body language in way that you come across as friendly and approachable. Look amused when something is amusing, laugh when something is funny, congratulate when someone’s bought something new, and give others a chance to narrate their side of the story. Never think you are the only interesting, knowing one around.

Company: One way to becoming positive is to seek positive company as both positivity and negativity are infectious. If the people you spend most of your time with are grumpy or have a pessimistic standpoint, you’ll find yourself mirroring the

10 Tricks to be a loving and Positive person

same emotions before a different set of people inadvertently. In order to inculcate positivity it is imperative that your friend circle is a positive, energetic, and a happy bunch. You’ll find yourself carrying the same positivity everywhere you go.

Activities: Do not remain idle and brood. Take up positive activities with others or in isolation. Share a joke, narrate a pleasant incident, take part in sporting activities, go for a run in the evening after work, have healthy sex, and you’ll find yourself bubbling with positive energy.

Take it easy: Everyday life is bound to give you shocks. Be prepared to minimise impact and shrug it off. For instance, you may get too hassled everyday while driving to work or trying to park your car. When you accept the fact that certain things cannot be changed, you’ll be more at ease with yourself and those around too.

Learn yoga: “Do pranayam everyday as it lets you focus and meditate. Not only does it secrete happy hormones but also creates a sense of awareness within you.” With the help of yogic asanas you control your breathing, and by way of it, control your mind from wandering. Every time you do yoga, you feel a surge of positive energy through your body that calms your nerves, soothes your mind, elevates your mood, and not to mention enhances your level of tolerance.

Maintain a diary: Instead of recounting all events of the day, filter out only the positive ones and make a note of them. It could be anything trivial from your bus arriving on time, your mom cooking a delicious breakfast, to remembering to pay the bills on time. When we look for positivity in the little things that make our lives worthwhile, we leave no room for negativity. “Try consciously practicing this for 10 days, and at the end of day ten when you read your diary back you’ll only have memories of all the good things that happened to you,” she asserts.

Say ‘thank you’: Thank god, thank your parents, friends, and thank yourself for all the hard work you did, for everything you achieved. “Saying thank you frequently makes you humble, and a humble person is seldom cynical.”

Try these methods, and you’ll be surprised when others notice the change in you.

IS DARK UNDERARM SKIN BOTHERING YOU?Every girl loves to show off her smooth underarms, but this gets just as embarrassing when the underarms start darkening. All is not lost, we give you an insight into skin darkening; we take a look at how and why of this tender issue so that you can go sleeveless. Let’s go under the surface to scratch the dirt from this unspoken topic in personal care.

“Dark underarms can be either because of the use of deodorant which has caused some reaction and lead to discoloration. Or it can also be because of a condition called Acanthosis Nigricans which causes darkness on the folds of neck, groin and underarms and is generally seen in overweight people.”

That may be the medical issue, but there are several causes as to why most women have dark underarms. Darkening of the skin occurs mostly around the area with most sweat glands. These could be some issues that are affecting your underarm skin color:n You skin may react to deodorants

and perfumes hence its advisable to apply anti fungal powder.

n Shaving not only thickens the hair, but also increases skin pigmentation. It’s better to wax the hair off as it plucks the hair from the root as well as strips off the dead cells.

n Accumulation of dead cells in the armpits; this is when proper hygiene is important.

n Friction due to tight clothing darkens the skin, it is advisable to wear lose clothing to minimize friction. During summer it is important to wear clothes that help your skin to breath and absorb sweat.

n Excess sweating only adds to skin darkening.

n Excessive use of hair removal cream, which can also cause infection

Getting back to the burning question: How do we treat dark underarms?

“Treatment of dark underarms can be by the application of retinoic acid cream like EGA or Demelan to lighten the dark areas.” One can also opt for laser hair reduction treatments.

Tips from a grandmother’s kitchen: You need three core ingredients for fairer underarms: Yogurt, lime – which is a bleaching agent, and turmeric. You could also add baking powder for its bleaching effect and gram flour as a base.

Who doesn’t like to have a clear complexion? Skin problems are nightmares for people of all ages. Everybody likes flawless skin.

But with the cosmetic industry growing and with it producing numerous beauty products, it’s but natural to get confused on what’s the best. When you are spoilt for choice, then it’s even more dangerous as some products might not suit your skin type. The best solution under such circumstances is to play safe and opt for tried and tested home remedies. This also helps should you have a sensitive skin.

Here are a few tips to aid your skin health

n It’s cliched, the most popular and common advice that you get from people. Yet, drinking lots of water is perhaps the most workable way to keep skin healthy and glowing.

n Squeeze half a lemon and add to warm water with honey. Consume this on an empty stomach everyday. Besides other benefits, this also purifies the blood.

n If you have oily skin, apply a pack of multani mitti mixed with rose

water. This not just cleanses the skin but also absorbs excess oil and keeps your skin neat.

n To remove blemishes/scars on your skin make a pack of tomato pulp, haldi, curd and besan. This acts as a natural scrub.

n For a natural bleach, rub lemon peel with honey on the skin and wash off after few minutes.

n Dry orange peel, grind and make a powder. Apply this with water on the face for a glowing skin.

n A pack of corn flour and curd applied everyday helps keep the skin clean.

n If you are going out in the sun, make sure you use an umbrella to shield yourself from the harmful effects of the sun rays.

n If you have a dry skin, massage your face with almond or vitamin e oil to keep your skin nourished

All it needs is a few minutes from your busy schedule to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Abu Dhabi, the most expensive city in the region in last year’s survey, is the 76th most expensive city in the world to live in this year, which is down from 67 last year. The cost of living in Dubai has also fallen, with the city ranking 94th overall this year compared with 81 last year.

However, the UAE is nonetheless still the most expensive place to live in the GCC, Mercer’s report noted. In addition to the lower accommodation costs across the UAE, the fall in Abu Dhabi and Dubai’s ranking has come about as a result of several other factors that range from slower increase in the prices of goods and services in the country relative to the base city, New York, to the stabilisation of the real estate market in the Middle East.

Tokyo, meanwhile has taken over as the most expensive city in the world for expatriates, displacing Luanda, Angola, which dropped to second place. Further, the top ten most expensive cities continue to be predominantly led by those located in Europe and Asia.

Following are the top 5 most expensive cities, globally, for 2012:

1. Tokyo, Japan

2. Luanda, Angola

3. Osaka, Japan

4. Moscow, Russia

5. Geneva, Switzerland

The top 5 most expensive cities, in the Middle East, for 2012 are:

1. Beirut, Lebanon

2. Abu Dhabi, UAE

3. Dubai, UAE

4. Amman, Jordan

5. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

ETIHAD RAIL TENDERS FIRST CONTRACTS FOR STAGE TWO OF THE UAE’S RAIL NETWORKEtihad Rail - the master developer and operator of the UAE’s national railway network - issued invitations to tender earlier this month for the first three contracts in the development of Stage Two of the rail network.

The three invitations to tender, which were issued to all pre-qualified companies, are for contracts covering the design and build of new lines between Ruwais and Ghweifat (137km), Liwa Junction and Al Ain (190km), as well as for the railway integration and systems contract (covering signalling, communications and commissioning) for the Stage Two network.

The invitation to tender comes on the back of the workshop hosted by Etihad Rail which took place this past June, and at which applicants to the pre-qualification process were advised on the imminent issuance of the three packages, followed by the issuance of the remaining Stage Two tenders over the next few months.

Stage Two represents a significant component of the national rail network, in both scale and scope, as it will further connect industrial and urban areas, and will see the railway connect with the planned GCC network - linking with Saudi Arabia at Ghweifat and Oman at Al Ain. Construction of Stage Two is scheduled to begin early next year, following the award of tendered contracts.

The tendering of the first contracts for Stage Two follows the commencement earlier this year of construction works near Mirfa in the Western Region for Stage One of the network. Stage One of the network is being developed in partnership with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), who will adopt rail as the main means for transporting granulated sulphur from Shah and Habshan to the port of Ruwais for export.

RAK CEMENT COMPANY RETURNS TO PROFITSThe Abu Dhabi market gauge ADXGI advanced 0.62% to reach 2,485.51 points. Real estate bellwether Aldar Properties was the most acive share by volume and gained 0.90% to close at Dhs1.11. Ras al-Khaima (RAK) Cement Company ended flat at Dhs0.67. Earlier in the day RAK Cement said it achieved a net profit of Dhs8.5m in the first six months of 2012, after suffering a loss of Dhs4.9m in the same period last year.

POSITIvE GROWTH IN DUBAI PROPERTY MARKET DURING H1 2012Listen to this report to see if rent in yur area is increasing. The residential property market in Dubai turned a corner during H1 2012 with rents in some areas increasing by up to 13%, according to a recent report from Asteco. Phil Blizzard talks to Elaine Jones, CEO, Asteco to get an insight into the key performing areas in both the residential and commercial sectors.

BEIRUT REPLACES ABU DHABI AS MOST EXPENSIvE CITY IN MIDDLE EASTThe Middle East sees its ranking fall in Mercer’s 2012 Worldwide Cost of Living Survey due largely to a drop in rental prices.

The survey found that Beirut is the most expensive city to live in this year within the Middle East,

moving up eight notches to number 67. Mercer’s survey factors in the cost of living for 214 cities globally. The consultancy compares the price of more than 200 factors in each location, including housing, transport, food and clothing costs.

The grandiose steps leading up to Al Hamra Golf Club are a foretaste of what awaits you at Zahara’s Restaurant. With its white tables, red themed paintings, friendly staff and stunning views over the golf course, disappointment is not an option. Since 2008, golfers and guests have been enjoying an extensive and excellent a la carte menu in a cosy, yet sophisticated environment at Zahara’s, but the introduction of the tasty and healthy interactive ‘Hot Rock Dining’ in 2010 brought a new dimension to the restaurant’s offering and the promise of an even more memorable dining experience with family or friends.

The inviting list of meat, fish, vegetables and cheese on the Hot Rock Dining menu, coupled by the innovative and fun experience of being offered the option of cooking your own dinner at your table, can only be described as an education…an excellent education! You could of course opt for the tremendously tempting tempura, pasta, pizza or salad from the a la carte menu, but the Hot Rock Dining is not to be missed.

The method of cooking on piping hot volcanic stones, which stems back to the ancient Egyptians and Vikings, offers a simple, healthy and, it has to be said, fantastic culinary experience. It’s hard to resist the incredibly fresh and succulent skewered prawns, bathed in fresh dill, which only need to be turned on the stone a few times. They don’t need anything other than a squeeze of lemon which enhances their flavour still more, although they are served with the universally popular lemon butter sauce. The sea bass, lobster, tenderloin and lamb are equally fresh and delicious, with specially designed tasty dip sauces to accompany them. And although all the Hot Rock Dining dishes come with a small helping of mixed vegetables, it is possible to order extras such as spicy mushrooms, spinach or mashed potatoes. No oil, so no spattering in your face at the table - a sprinkling of salt is all that’s required for the cooking process, because the stones are kept in a purpose-built oven day and night to maintain their constant temperature of 400 degrees centigrade.

If you decide to go for this impressive ‘do it yourself ’ option, a knowledgeable waiter will carefully drape a protective bib around your neck and explain exactly what you have to do when your personal hot stone arrives in its protective white ceramic plate. On the other hand, it is possible to have your food cooked by the Hot Rock method in the kitchen under the watchful eye of Zahara’s Head Chef, Nady Shaker.

‘HOT ROCK DINING’ AT ZAHARA’S AL HAMRA GOLF CLUB’S INNOvATIvE AND HEALTHY DINING OPTION

Despite the amazing dessert menu including chocolate hazelnut tart, papaya and mango cheesecake and summer berry pudding, it’s hard to find room for anything after a Hot Rock meal at Zahara’s, not even tea or coffee, but it’s definitely worth a try! So, if you’re looking for a relaxing but fun experience, subdued music, exactly the right amount of lighting and non-intrusive but knowledgeable staff, call 07 244 7474 (Extension 2) to book a table.

MALINGRI FAMILY TO SET UP A WORLD CLASS SAILING ACADEMY IN RAS AL KHAIMAHSet on the mouth of the lagoon, the Al Hamra Marina & Yacht Club is an extension of Al Hamra Village, Ras Al Khaimah’s (RAK) master planned lifestyle development. The Marina, designed and installed by Europe’s leading pontoon supplier Poralu Marine, is the last significant fuelling stop for vessels and guests in the Arabian Gulf. Adding another feather to their cap, the Marina is set to launch an exciting development – The RAK Sailing Academy.

The academy is being set up by Italy’s well known Malingri di Bagnolo family. Al Hamra Marina’s wind and sea characteristics with favourable sailing conditions, safe location of lagoons to train children, first level sailors and the three surrounding luxury hotels provide the most suitable location for the RAK Sailing Academy. The Al Hamra Marina comprises of 200 wet berths and caters to motor boats, yachts and inflatable’s measuring 10 feet to 100 feet in length. The Marina offers secure berths with a modern and sophisticated gate pass entry whilst all water pontoons provide power supply and fresh water hoses.

Overseen by experienced sailors, Captain John Curran, Eduardo Callegari and Matteo Bassan the RAK Sailing Academy LLC is equipped with dinghy, catamaran, and fix keel sailing boats for juniors and seniors. The academy will also receive constant guidance from Enrico, Franco Malingri di Bagnolo and Antonio Fresco.

Sailing classes are divided into different ages and skill sets. At the facility people will be able to rent different types of sailing boats for relaxation or for training courses. The beach area at the Al Hamra lagoon is the centre piece for parents, friends and students of the sailing school.

The sailing program is divided into two main categories namely dinghy and keel boats. Each category has a different set of progressive courses, which aims to help increase student experience over time. Being a first for the UAE, the sailing academy is set to make Al Hamra Marina & Yacht Club the centre of sailing and yachting in the Arabian Gulf area.

Mr. Enrico chose Al Hamra Marina specifically to encourage residents and upcoming sailors within RAK to provide them with the opportunity to participate in international sailing events.

The academy will utilise the sailing cruiser boat facility where off-shore courses will be held. The Marina is also set up with a day charter facility where by sailing boats will be used for daily excursions with crew for tourists of the Al Hamra Village. Facilities for renting daily and weekend boats are in place to attract passionate and professional sailing tourists from the region and overseas. The school follows ISAF (International Sailing Association) rules regarding sailing instructors.

Only a 45 minute drive North of Dubai by road and three hours at average cruising speed by sea, The Al Hamra Marina & Yacht Club is the perfect weekend destination for travelers, world sailing pioneers, boat owners and berthing yachts.

Many vacationers already know Chennai, India, for its long sandy beaches and Costa Rica for its rich, tropical landscape. But both places are also among the top 10 destinations for medical tourism. Approximately 400,000 Americans and more than two million international citizens travel abroad each year to take advantage of affordable health care services, treatments and surgeries.

For example, a Wisconsin small business owner saved nearly 75% in costs by going to India for a successful double hip resurfacing procedure that would have cost $55,000 in the U.S. And that 75% saving included his airfare and accommodation in India. A California woman who was quoted $6,600 for extensive dental work received the same treatment for $2,600 in Costa Rica. Her dentist there was a U.S.-trained oral surgeon who had all the essential state-of-the-art equipment and materials on hand.

Nearly every standard medical procedure is available overseas. And—depending upon the country and the type of treatment—cost savings can range from 15% to as much as 85%. Orthopedics, cardiovascular surgery, dental care, cosmetic surgery, and cancer diagnosis and treatment are among the services patients most commonly seek overseas. However, U.S. patients also travel abroad for specialty treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and bariatric surgeries, as well as for therapies not yet permitted in the U.S., such as certain stem cell treatments.

DRAMATIC COST COMPARISONSIn almost every instance, the cost savings are dramatic. A heart bypass surgery in the U.S.—typically running anywhere from $70,000 to $133,000—will cost $7,000 in India or $22,000 in Thailand. Hip replacement in India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand can run as low as one-fifth the cost for the same surgery back home. A facelift, costing $10,500 to $16,000 in the U.S., is $5,500 to $6,500 in Brazil, as low as $2,400 in Thailand and $4,000 to $8,000 in Singapore, South Korea and Mexico.

The same is true for dental procedures and surgeries. For example, sets of upper and lower dentures usually cost $5,000 in the U.S. They run less than a third that much in Hungary and Costa Rica. More expensive crown and implant procedures often run less than a third of U.S. cost for this work. And inlays and onlays in Costa Rica, Hungary, Mexico and Thailand—countries well known for their high-quality dental work—are less than a quarter of U.S. cost.

These figures not only reflect the cost of procedures but also the hospital stay in a private room. To get a ballpark estimate of total costs, patients should add about $5,000 for themselves and a companion. This amount is based on airfare costs and hotel rooms averaging $150 per night. When considering medical tourism as a health care option, use $6,000

TOP 10 MEDICALas a rule of thumb. That is, if you’re quoted at least $6,000 for a procedure in the U.S., the chances are pretty good that you can get the same procedure and quality for less in at least one of the top 10 international destinations—even if you include the cost of travel and lodging.

Many hospitals and treatment centers in the top countries for medical tourism already have Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. For a medical facility to be accredited, the JCI requires it to meet rigorous U.S. health care standards. The standards are applied comprehensively to medical staff, procedures, medical equipment and instruments, and administrative infrastructure. Even hospitals that are not yet JCI-accredited must satisfy or exceed strict standards imposed by their own countries.

But don’t stop after checking what type of accreditation a hospital has. Study your doctor’s or surgeon’s educational background, certification and affiliations. The JCI website carries lots of information about all accredited institutions.

TOP 10 DESTINATIONSHere are the top countries for health care travel. In each of these countries, medical tourism services are gaining ground: The number of reliable agents, recovery accommodation and travel support services expands each year.

TRAVELDESTINATION

Page 31: Northernlife Magazine - October 2012

Brazil: Home to the highest per capita number of practicing cosmetic doctors in the world. Brazil attracts tourists not only to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, but also to smaller citi es, including Porto Alegre and Santos. Common procedures, such as tummy tucks, breast augmentations, facelifts and rhinoplasty, run $3,000 to $6,500.

Costa Rica: Nearly 15% of international tourists visiting this ecological paradise take advantage of its medical services, mainly cosmetic surgery and dental care. San Jose and its surrounding area are home to hundreds of board-certified doctors, surgeons and dentists. Costa Rica is one of the top five medical tourism destinations for Americans.

Hungary: Long known for its mineral springs, lakes, baths and spas, Hungary has more dentists per capita than any other country. They are found not only in Budapest, but also in a small town of 30,000 (Mosonmagyaróvár) near the Austrian border, which has 160 dental offices. Many European Union visitors come here for major dental care, including cosmetic oral surgeries, full-mouth restorations and implants.

India: More Americans travel here for cardiac and orthopedic procedures than for all other treatments combined. India offers top private hospitals, especially in the larger cities of Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai. Medical travel to India is growing by 30% a year, thanks to increasing numbers of Americans, Canadians and Europeans—especially those seeking expensive cardiac and orthopedic surgeries. These often cost tens of thousands of dollars less here than in their home countries.

Malaysia: With more than a quarter of a million medical travelers each year, Malaysia compares favorably to India, Thailand, and neighboring Singapore in terms of its medical facilities, skill and costs. As well as having special burn treatment centers, Malaysian hospitals have created “well-man” and “well-woman” packages that include extensive, low-cost physicals and tests promoting preventive care. A battery of tests, including blood work, bone density scan, chest X-ray and treadmill, usually runs just $340, compared to $2,500 in the U.S.

Mexico: Its convenient location is the top draw for most Mexico-bound health travelers. More than 70% of Mexico’s U.S. patients reside in California, Texas or Arizona. Patients from San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson and Brownsville make the two- to six-hour drive across the border to a clinic, stay a couple of nights in a hotel and then return Stateside. Many come each year for checkups, dental cleanings, physicals and other treatments that cost much less than in the U.S. The added benefit, of course, is minimal travel.

Singapore: A medical tourism veteran, this tiny Asian nation—with a population of four-and-a-half million—has a health care system that the World Health Organization ranks as the best in Asia and sixth best in the world. It’s no wonder that Singapore attracts many international patients. Singapore’s specialties cover a broad range, including cardiology and cardiac surgery, gastroenterology, general surgery, hepatology, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics and stem cell therapy. Recent additions include the $300-million Biopolis, a seven-building, 2-million-square-foot biotechnology research center that opened in late 2003. The

Biopolis includes a stem cell bank, thanks to Singapore’s liberal laws on using human embryonic cells for research.

South Korea: One of the world’s most technologically and scientifically advanced nations. South Korea has earned a reputation for spinal surgeries, cancer screenings and treatments and cosmetic surgeries. Many South Korean hospitals are fully digitized, with electronic health records as the standard. Daegu, in the center of the nation, hosts a well-known herbal medicine market dating to the 17th century. On the southern seacoast, Busan attracts many medical travelers to the local Hanyang University Medical Center for low-cost, comprehensive health screenings.

Thailand: An established leader in cosmetic surgery, with an excellent medical infrastructure. Thailand turned the crash of its baht currency in the late 1990s into economic opportunity by attracting patients from nearby Japan, Vietnam, China and South Korea. Eventually, Westerners joined the flow to Bangkok and Phuket, primarily for elective surgeries whose low cost more than makes up for the long flight and other travel expenses.

Turkey: Medical tourists may be surprised to know that this Eurasian country is home to more JCI-accredited health care facilities than any nation outside the U.S. Health care costs compare extremely well even to those in Asia, and the medical system has plenty of doctors who are Western-trained and fluent in English. The Turkish government enforces strict quality standards in every area of medical technology, facilities and personnel. Dunyagoz, in particular, is a center for ophthalmology.

JAQUARXKFAST & BEAUTIFUL

XK delivers exhilarating performance and unparalleled comfort plus the versatility of a 2 + 2 seating configuration. XK’s aerodynamic sweeping curves, low-riding profile, lightweight aluminium body and advanced automotive technology enable exhilarating handling wherever you go. Its hand crafted cabin ensures absolute comfort however far you travel.

FAST AND BEAUTIFULThe XK range features sweeping, athletic lines that create the impression of speed even when the car is standing still.

EXTERIOR DESIGNXK is designed and engineered in two bodystyles, Coupé and Convertible. Both are built in aluminium, which combines lightness with strength and rigidity. Every surface is sculpted to create a visual energy, with the outer aluminium skin stretched taut over the aluminium body structure. Complex mesh surfacing on the front grille, horizontal side power vents, and elegantly profiled headlamps with LED daytime running lights, create a new and distinctive visual signature.

SUPERB ENGINES The XK range is powered by Jaguar’s 5.0 Litre V8 direct-injection engines. Available in three versions – the Supercharged 510PS and 550PS, and naturally aspirated 385PS – this superb engine exemplifies Jaguar’s reputation for innovation and engineering excellence. It delivers breathtaking power and torque with impressive fuel efficiency.

EMPOWERING TECHNOLOGYXK’s technology is designed to make the driving experience as potent and enjoyable as possible; to allow performance handling and maintain stability without taking control.

Jaguar’s Adaptive Dynamics system monitors body and wheel movements 500 hundred times a second, making constant adjustments to the dampers to achieve the ideal balance of comfort and razor-sharp handling.

On the XKR and XKR-S, the Active Differential adds an extra level of traction on loose surfaces. For drivers seeking greater involvement, all XK models offer Dynamic and Sport modes for an even more exhilarating experience.

ALUMINIUM BODY CONSTRUCTIONXK’s all-aluminium body construction is fundamental to the way the car performs. Using technology derived from the aerospace industry, it delivers a combination of lightness, strength and rigidity – the key to great sports car handling, superb performance and impressive efficiency. High torsional rigidity delivers exceptional agility, reduced body roll and pin-sharp cornering; less weight results

in faster acceleration, shorter braking distances, improved fuel economy and lower emissions when compared to an equivalent steel-bodied car.

INTERIOR DESIGNThe range offers exceptional comfort to both driver and passengers. Sumptuous leather, hand-crafted veneers and exquisite detailing add a warm and welcoming note to the sporting interiors. The focus on dynamic performance is accentuated with flawless ergonomics and intuitive controls.

THE XK EXPERIENCEWith XK, the journey begins as you approach it. With optional keyless entry, the Jaguar Smart Key in your bag or pocket has already sensed your proximity and unlocked the driver’s door. Settling in to the leather seats, the Start button glows red on the centre console. Press, and the JaguarDrive Selector™ rises up into the palm of your hand. The dashboard illuminates as the cabin features are highlighted in a cool phosphor blue. The centre console’s 7 inch Touch-screen lights up. It’s there to control satellite navigation, climate control, Bluetooth® telephone system or in-car audio. Grip the soft leather of the steering wheel, engage the JaguarDrive Selector™ and prepare for the unforgettable XK driving experience.
