Little did I realise when I wrote last time that we would have a perfectexample of what happens if someone does not update their cat’s microchip records when they move and the cat in question would be one thatwe had re-homed. We received a call from the vets when a little cat wasbrought in by a concerned member of the public as they have no nearneighbours and it was apparent that it was a stray. As the cat was microchipped they were able to establish that it had been in our care and, knowing that the owners no longer lived at the address on the records, contacted us to see if had been reported lost or whether we had any othercontact details. Unfortunately, we were unable to help but are obviouslyconcerned for the cat’s future welfare as the person who is caring forhim at present does not want another cat. The vets have now been able toestablish the area where the people have moved to and with co-operationfrom the cat owner’s own vet are trying to make contact with them. Asthe little cat is half way from the area where his owners now live and hisold home we believe he was probably trying to make his way back there. We are hoping his owner can be found and he can be re-united withthem, otherwise he may come back into our care.

At this time of the year the vast majority of those re-homed are kittensalthough we have also seen several of the lovely young mums leave ourcare too. Some have been in dire need of some tender loving care whenthey join us and it is remarkable how quickly they respond when theyreceive it. Because they all receive a check at the vets before they go to new homes we can also identify any problems and this has been thesituation with two little kittens recently. One little kitten had a herniawhich will be repaired when he is neutered but the other has a seriousheart murmur. Kittens do often have heart murmurs when they go fortheir first vaccination and these have usually disappeared by the timethey have the second. This will not be the case in this instance however. Both kittens have been lucky to find new homes with understanding

owners, the little girl with the heart murmurhaving been given a home with veterinarynurses who understand the significance of thesituation and how this could affect her.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively youcan visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for adescription and photographs of the cats beforegiving us a call on the above number to findout where any particular cat is being fostered.

If however you are interested in receiving helpto neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Special Olympics Norfolk holdstaster day at UEAContinued from front cover...Richard Sanders, chairman of Special Olympics Norfolk, explained: “Thetaster day represents a welcoming and sociable introduction to sport foradults at the superb sporting facilities offered by the UEA campus. “We hope as many adults as possible with special needs, aged 16 andabove, will take up this fantastic opportunity to try out new sports, havea lot of fun and find out what Special Olympics is about and up to acrossthe county.

“Although this event is aimed at adults over the age of 16, SpecialOlympics Norfolk is also hoping to hear from families of learning disabled children for whom we can arrange training from the age of 6 and competition in sport and athletics from the age of 8.

“We already have almost 100 people of all ages from every corner ofNorfolk taking part in sporting events and competing regionally and nationally and, in some instances, on the international stage for GreatBritain around the world.

“Special Olympics Norfolk recently had four gymnasts and a tennisplayer compete very successfully for the Eastern region at the SpecialOlympics National Summer Games in Bath at the start of September. They returned with a stunning haul of 24 medals between them!” addedRichard.

THE CONFIT Four duck legs, perfect from Icarus Hines. I use Gressingham duck which is always agood local Norfolk bird.► In a hot pan, sear the ducklegs in unsaltedbutter until golden brown. Place into an ovendish and season well with Maldon sea salt, thyme and garlic and a couple of bay leaves.

► Half-cover the legswith duck fat and coverwith baking parchmentand foil.► Cook in the oven for five to six hours (depending on the size or the legs) on gas mark

three. The meat needs to be soft but not fallingoff the bone.► Extract from the oil and leave to rest. Tubthe duck fat and when cool place in the fridgeto use next time.

DAUPHINOISE POTATOES► Pre-heat oven to gas markthree. Make sure your oven dishis evenly coated with butter.► Peel five large potatoes – weget ours direct from the garden –thinly slice with a sharp knife ormandolin.► Mix up 500ml of double cream, a couple of pinches of nutmeg, agood amount of seasoning andtwo crushed garlic cloves.► Toss the potatoes in yourcream mix, place everything intoyour gratin dish – layering theslices of potato – and bake for approximately an hour to 90 minutes, pressing down with awooden spoon every 15 minutes.► The potatoes will come outlovely and golden brown; leave to stand for at least ten minutes.

SIMPLE GARDEN BEETROOT jUS► Boil your beetroots for two to threee hoursand, while hot, peel them – wear rubber glovesof course! Dice up with a shallot, a medium-sized red onion and a knob of unsalted butter.► Cook on a medium heat until soft, then add50ml of red wine, a dash of white wine vinegar, Maldon sea salt and black pepper and 75ml of chicken stock.► Remove from the heat, puree with a stickblender until smooth, return to the heat for 10minutes and finish with a pinch of caster sugarto give some sweet balance to the acidity.

Just ask and make yourself known to us and we will make youwelcome. You can stay as long as you are able. WOODFIELDS DEN Please support your new local Charity Shop

Sheringham Woodfields is a complex needs school sharing a campus with the towns Primary and High School. Our pupils range from ages 3 to 19 and come

from a wide geographical area.

On Wednesday 23rd October our new charity shop will open its doors in Sheringham, next to the new Tesco store.

The aim is for our students to continue developing independence and to learn new life skills in helping to run this exciting new project. Any profit will be used

to enhance any extra-curricular opportunities for our students.

We are currently in the process of looking for some new volunteers. If you have a bright personality, love to help people, have a good sense of humour and can spare an hour or two a week, we would love to hear from you. (A CRB will be

Help Children in Zambia's "Building a Future" Project October 2014Many of the street children of Lusaka, Zambia have been very ‘damaged‘ by their experiences - they needprofessional help. That help can be freely obtained from worldwide volunteers. We are hoping to build ahouse that will accommodate up to six volunteer doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals! We have ateam of builders from North Norfolk who are donating their costs, time and skills to go and build it in October2014! How great is that! They are also passing on their skills and tools to the older children, empoweringthem to earn a livelihood for themselves and future generations. We need to now raise £25,000 for the building materials. Please come along on 12 October to help us.

Fallen LeavesAn autumn leaf touched my face,

Then fluttered to my feet,The trees were shedding golden leaves

All along the street. The sunshine and the autumn scene,

Had really made my day,And I paused for just a moment

Before going on my way. This had made me realise

I was lucky to be me,And possessed one of the greatest gifts

The ability to seeDiane Berthelot

They have alsoagreed to sponsor the event, which will allowthe White Horse to advertise the event to aneven wider audience. Still to be announced byGreene King are the other lots that they will bedonating to the auction.

Greene King Sales Development Manager

Andrew Galpin said “We are delighted to havebeen asked to support this great event and tohelp raise money for such an important charity. We wish the White Horse and everyone involved the very best of luck and hope that it will raise ‘lots’ of money”.

Amongst the other lots already promised aretickets to a meeting at Fakenham Race Course,a food hamper, tickets for two to Newmarketraces with access to the owners ring, a framedNorwich City shirt signed by the team and ayear’s swimming pass from WoodlandsLeisure.

Darren Walsgrove owner of the White Horsesaid “This is a really exciting event and I amdelighted with the support it has already received - we have high hopes that it will raisea considerable amount of money and helpboost our fundraising for Nelson’s Journey. Mythanks to Greene King and all those how havealready supported the event with items for theauction. I know there are still more to come so everyone at the White Horse is hoping for a really great evening”.

The event is part of the White Horse’s yearlong fundraising commitments to their Charity

of the Year, Nelson’s Journey, a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved children and young people throughout Norfolk.

Based in Norwich the charity was founded in 1997 and has to date helped over 1,500 children between the ages of 0 to 17 inclusive who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life. In the case of very youngchildren this is by giving support and advice tothe remaining parent or guardians.

The name Nelson’s Journey was chosen to inspire and reflect the two main aspects of thecharity - it is local, hence the use of Norfolk’sown Admiral Nelson, while ‘Journey’ was chosen as bereavement is a journey which begins the minute your loved one dies and lastsa lifetime. The work that the group begun 15years ago continues to develop and reachesnew highs each year.

Entirely dependent on donations from individuals, groups, trusts and organisations, as well asmoney raised by their own fundraising events,Nelson’s Journey’s vision is of a Norfolkwhere no bereaved child has to cope alone withtheir loss and has the support they need tomove forward positively with their lives.

Full details of all the lots will be available atthe White Horse from Friday 4 October. Sealedbids will be accepted until Friday 11 Octoberand will be opened on the night when the lotsare being auctioned.

Labour selects their candidate for the NorthWalsham East by-electionNorth Norfolk Labour Party members have re-selected StephenBurke to fight the North Walsham East by-election.

Mr Burke, from Happisburgh, fought the division in the Norfolk CountyCouncil elections in May and increased the Labour vote by 240pc compared to four years before. He says that Labour is up for the fight in North Walsham East and the surrounding villages.

Stephen sits on both the board of the Victory Housing Trust and North Norfolk Community Transport, and has a passionate belief that affordable housing and transport are crucial to helping local peoplework, study, and live in North Norfolk. He is a volunteer at Happisburghlighthouse and is a campaigner on local issues like ambulance responsetimes, access to the beach and coastal defences.

Mr Burke has said that the resignation of the sitting Lib Dem countycouncillor is yet another sign that the Lib Dems had “let the electoratedown again”.

Stephen Burke, Labour’s candidate for North Walsham East, said “Afterjust four months since the county council elections the people of NorthWalsham East are being asked to vote again for a new councillor. TheLib Dems have let the electorate down again, and I believe that Labourstands a good chance of winning this seat. We had a significant increasein the vote last time, and we will be building upon this over the comingweeks. Only the Labour Party can be trusted to stand up for ordinarypeople up against three other Tory parties.”

Find out more about Stephen Burke at www.norfolklabour.co.uk.The by-election takes place on October 24.

PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ?The Royal British Legion raises a large percentage of the monies they spend supporting current and former service personnel through the annual Poppy Appeal.

This year, in North Walsham, we are fortunatein having received invitations from both themajor supermarkets to collect in their stores.Unfortunately old age and infirmity reducesour pool of volunteer collectors each year andwe are desperately in need of further volun-teers to ensure we raise as much as possible to help support the Legion’swork.

If you could spare a couple of hours any day between 28 October and 9 November to assist us please contact the local Poppy Appeal organiser, David Audley, on 01692 404418.

65 extra frontline staff for northNorfolk's ambulance service'Act on Ambulances' campaigners have welcomed the promise of 65 extra front-line staff here after the ambulance trust pledged to treat north Norfolk as a priority area.

The campaign, started by North Norfolk Labour Party, was launched after concerns about response times in thearea over a year ago.

Throughout the campaign Act on Ambulances campaigners have kept the pressure on both the previous and interim chief executives pointing out to them the ambulance trust's failures and highlighting the stories theyhave heard on the ground.

The concerns about response times from both residents and campaigners were confirmed in the Anthony Marsh report earlier this year.Denise Burke, Labour's parliamentary candidate for the constituency, has welcomed the news stating: "We hope the Trust will now deliver on thispromise so that those living in north Norfolk can finally regain confidence in the ambulance service.

A job of this magnitude is impossible to complete unless you have awilling labour force. I am pleased to say this is not a problem for theBluebell Pond Society.

By 10am Danny Lincoln, Rita Smith, George Blackburn, Tony Wiles,Chris Hicks, Brian Abbs, Andy, Oliver Haynes- Browne, Josh Munro,Andrew Browne, Audrey Haynes & Beverly Haynes were on parade and ready to get on with the job - some even arrived at 9am!

Many thanks to Cliff and Chris Cushion, and Mike Kirby for keeping ussupplied with skips, and of course Granville Yaxley who keeps our grassin good condition.

Finally I would like to thank Margaret & the Town Council for theirhelp and continued support

It has been announced that the government is pressing with plans to sell-off Royal Mail in the coming weeks, despite widespread oppositionfrom North Norfolk residents.

North Norfolk Labour Party has been campaigning against the sale ofanother "national treasure" through street stalls across the constituencyover the past few months. Nearly 2,000 people have opposed the plans, and residents have been particularly concerned about the effects privatisation may have on local communities.

It is expected that the company will be floated on the stock exchangeshortly.

Denise Burke, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for NorthNorfolk, said "The people of North Norfolk, much like the rest of thecountry, have serious concerns about what the government is doing withRoyal Mail. This is a company that does make a profit - it makes a hugeprofit and so there is no reason why they should want to sell it off otherthan for the sake political ideology.

The result of any such sale could put at risk the daily delivery, jobs, andthe universal service we all get.

We want to see villages like Hempstead, Happisburgh and Hindringhamall get the same service that everyone else receives, and residents fearthat this will not happen with a private company.

There is an assumption that companies benefit from privatisation, but history tells us differently, and it is a real shame Norfolk's MPs

cannot see that."

North Norfolk Labour Party willcontinue to protest the move atstreet stalls and planned activitiesover the next month. Those unableto attend the street stalls can signthe petition against the move atwww.norfolklabour.co.uk.

Your face provides the world with a lasting impression of who you are and how you feel. But, it does not have to tell your age. In today’sfast-paced, competitive society, looks are moreimportant than ever. The unfortunate truth isthat there are social and economic benefits associated with good looks. For many of ourpatient’s the overly tight ‘wind-tunnel’ lookfollowing a facelift is unacceptable. They desire a more natural looking facial rejuvenation and lift.

Why an awake face lift? Many cosmetic surgery patients are tellingtheir surgeons that they don't want to go undergeneral anaesthesia. Being under generalanaesthesia is fraught with risks and prolongedbruising and recovery period.

How do you perform face and neck lifts atthe Coltishall Clinic? With our technique, the operation is performedunder local anaesthesia with an awake patient.A special solution of saline (salt-water), epinephrine, and lidocaine is injected. Salinehelps to separate the tissues, making the dissection less traumatic for the face and neck.Epinephrine causes the tiny blood vessels inthe area to constrict, minimising bleeding andbruising. Lidocaine numbs the area to providepain control and this lasts for 12-18 hours afterwards-reducing the need for painkillers.

What types of face and neck lift do you offerat the Coltishall Clinic?Apart from a full range of non-surgical treatments we offer a variety of surgical options as follows...

• One stitch facelift - this is our minimally invasive facelift. It is suitable for youngerpatients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost.

• Thread lift - this is also a minimally invasive procedure and suitable for those patients who want to avoid the knife on their face.

• Laser face lift - this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt these and also heats the surrounding tissue.

• Full face and neck lift - Pre medication is recommended to relax the patient. One side is operated at a time. A small amount of skin in front of and below the ear is removed. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures.

• Neck lift only - this can be performed through a tiny 1 inch incision in the neck crease. This is suitable for patients with neck bands. Men with turkey neck in particular may be interested in neck only lift where it can be combined with removal of excess skin.

How will I look after surgery? The change following your surgery can be dramatic. The use of small instruments andfluid to separate the skin from deeper tissue results in a bloodless procedure. There may beminor bruising or swelling for 1-2 days. Youmay elect to return to work in 2-5 days or waittill your stitches are removed in 7 days. Thedays of prolonged swelling and bruising andhaving to hide away for weeks are long gone. Our patients do not generally get any significant bruising.

What are the benefits of Coltishall clinicface-lift procedure?Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS Medical Director at the Coltishall clinichas had advanced training in face and necklifts in the USA and has adapted best practice and technological innovations. As the procedure is performed in the clinicpurely under local anesthesia and not in a hospital, it offers the following

advantages:• A natural look• Quick recovery• Minimal complication risk• Minimal scars• No hair loss• Less cost • Less risk of infection

With so many face and neck lift options onoffer, along with a whole host of cutting edgenon-surgical options, we are sure to have a solution to offer you. So why not give us a callon 0800 0430737 or log on to the website atwww.coltishallclinic.co.uk

The Cromer RNLI lifeboat rescue of the Pyrinand Fernebo, which saw 33 people saved fromthe sea on 9 January 1917, is to feature in an RNLI national touring exhibition commemorating the centenary of World WarOne (WW1). The charity’s exhibition, fundedby Arts Council England, is called Hope in theGreat War, and will honour the courage andbravery of the lifeboat crew who risked theirlives to save others during WW1.

Cromer’s lifesaving story of 40 men launchingthe lifeboat, the formation of a human

lifesaving chain and a second launch of thelifeboat in worsening conditions is locallyrenowned, and will now feature in the exhibition alongside five other RNLI lifeboatservices that took place in communities acrossthe United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.Opening in February 2014 at the Henry BloggMuseum in Norfolk, Hope in the Great Warwill start a 4 year tour around RNLI museums, lifeboat stations and other museums.

Now the RNLI is asking thelocal community in Cromer forfamily memories, photographsand artefacts connected to theRNLI lifeboat rescue of thePyrin and Fernebo. The most relevant items may be selected to feature within the exhibitionallowing the fullest story of therescue to be told nationally.

Becky Fletcher, RNLI HeritageProject Co-ordinator explains‘The outstanding efforts byCromer’s RNLI volunteers tosave lives in WW1 will now begiven a national voice. Althoughmany details are already known

about the Pyrin and Fernebo rescues, findingpersonal memories and connections would

undoubtedly be offurther inspiration.

‘We’re involving thecommunity in otherways too – locally, the RNLI is teamingup with members ofthe 1st Cromer SeaScouts to create apiece of artwork forthe tour. They arecreating a stainedglass interactivegame which will feature within the exhibition.’

Karen Drury, ScoutLeader at the 1st

Cromer Sea Scouts says ‘The Pyrin and Fernebo rescue story for us is a very proud moment in Cromer’s history. We feel immensely privileged to be involved in such an importantproject and by helping to share the Cromer rescue with the rest of the nation. Our Scouts,Cubs and Beavers are fascinated with the storyof the rescue, particularly when comparingtechnology in our modern times and the lack of technology and kit they had nearly 100 yearsago, but the RNLI volunteers still managed tosave lives because of the crew’s sheer bravery.

‘We are thrilled with the youngsters’ enthusiasm for this project and we are sure it is somethingthey will never forget. Hopefully they willcontinue to share the story and experience of this project with their children in years to come.’

Dear Margaret,Can I use your columns to put Ross Wordie straight? He seems to be just a trifle misled over the North Norfolk Railway's relationshipwith the Norfolk Orbital Railway (Melton Constable Trust). They don't have one. Far from being hand in glove, or the same organisation, the North Norfolk Railway, while agreeing that a railway backto the site of the original station in Holt, and then further to Melton Constable and beyond, would be a good thing, thinks that the projectis not feasible or achievable in a reasonable time, and for that reason, appeals to members of the M&GNJRS (the charity which supportsthe North Norfolk Railway) to spend their money on the NNR's current projects, which do not include any extensions. I refer you to page 3 of the current (Autumn 2013) Joint Line, the members' magazine freely available in the station shop at Sheringham. The chairman of theM&GNJRS and the chairman of the North Norfolk Railway make the position quite clear. To take Ross' further points:Sheringham is not unique as a steam town. There are now literally hundreds of steam railways in the UK. Many of them are smaller thanthe NNR, quite a few are larger, and the towns associated with them benefit from railway tourism in the same way Sheringham does. Takea look at any issue of the national magazine Steam Railway and all will become clear.Station Road is hardly free access to the town. In summer, there are so many pedestrians all over the road that any driver with any sense realises that Sheringham already has a problem with traffic congestion and uses Church Street, over the bridge provided for that very purpose by the late great Midland & Great Northern Railway. This avoids the busy Station Road and gives easy access to the old Budgen's car park in Morris St. The Church Street bridge is adequate - even Sanders' big six wheeler buses have no problems with it - andwere it not, it could be widened. This is the second bridge on the site (the abutments of the old bridge are visible on Platform 1), so it's beendone before. What man has done, man can do.By far the greater part of the parking in Sheringham is in any case in the old station yard on the landward side of the railway. It is not necessary to cross the railway to get to this parking, any more than it will be to get to Tesco, so any closing of level crossing gates would not affect it. Even if traffic were to pile up for hours, it would be easy to make an unblockable entrance to the car park. How Beeston Roadcomes into it I don't see, unless Ross lives there and is worried about a rat run.The present train service is one train an hour. No train operating company so far has expressed a desire to increase the service, and if trainsran to Holt they would probably be at the same frequency. It has to be considered that the Norwich line as far as North Walsham is and always has been a single line with limited passing places - Cromer, Sheringham and Weybourne, should the line run through to Holt - whichobviously influences the frequency at which trains can be run. No more than one train is ever permitted on a single line section. This meansthat the level crossing gates would only have to be shut for a few minutes while the infrequent trains passed over Station Road - not whilethey were in the station.Unless the Shannocks of the 1960s were running the British Railways Board, they had absolutely no say in the closing of the line (publicopinion at the time was against it), nor in the abandonment of the M&GN station and the level crossing. British Railways decided all this, and the reason they built the glorified bus stop which is now the Network Rail terminus was that they refused to continue to pay forthe upkeep and maintenance of the level crossing and the station buildings and platforms. Mere meanness, not consideration for Shannocks. As to Tesco - I regret to say this, but it's not trains or level crossing gates which will be the downfall of independent shops. Indeed, moretrains and more visitors, who are not intent on doing their weekly shop but are looking for something more individual, can only help thetown. Tesco is convenient and has all one needs, if not all one wants, and can, as its founder said, pile it high and sell it cheap(ish). Tescocampaigns so hard to get into towns because it knows that once it's there, people will use it. Because it's easy.'They built a track over it'? Sorry, that track was there before the Green. Otterndorf Green was part of the M&GN and it was always understood that the line would run through there if it was reinstated. It did not belong to the town then, and probably not now - it's eitherBritish Railways Residuals or the NNR - and whatever happens to the Railway, there will be as much of it available to the public as thereis now. Quite how many people want to sit at a busy cross roads for fun I don't know. So be grateful to the Railway for there being any greenspace there at all. If there had not been a railway that would have been concrete for many years. Oh, and you wouldn't have the parking bythe station either.Does Ross realise what planning permission was needed, what enquiries, what consultations, the Railway went through before they couldre-lay that short section of track over Station Road? It took years just for the permissions to replace something which had been there before. Not just 'irresponsible councillors' (probably concerned to gain the advantages for the town that through excursions could and have given),but Network Rail, E-on... the list goes on. If - and, as I pointed out at the beginning, the NNR and the Melton Constable Trust are not in agreement - a scheduled train service wasever to run, the gates would take up no more room than they do now, and there would still be years of discussion, planning enquiries and, more important, the question of signalling. This is one of the most important aspects of railway safety, and, while both Network Rail andthe North Norfolk Railway have stringent signalling requirements, their systems are not compatible. All this would have to be worked out.At present the level crossing is legally a tramway crossing and is signalled as such, but a regular service would require the two systems to beseamlessly joined.Personally I am in agreement with the aims of the Melton Constable Trust. The cross country railway links should never have been closed, and should be reinstated instead of the expensive and useless HS2. But I am also in agreement with the viewpoint of the NNR. The Norfolk Orbital Railway would be very useful, but in the absence of any sense and funding from central government, it's not going to happen. Even just getting to Holt proper from the current Holt station at High Kelling would involve an expensive road crossing nearKelling Hospital (it would have to be a bridge), and the fact that the old track bed is now the Holt bypass, with minimal space alongside for a railway line.Rant over! But it's only fair to give space to the facts...

Best regards, R M King, Cromer

Phil Weston, owner of Wet Dog in Cromer, will soon be pushing himself well out of his comfort zone to help raise money for the muchneeded Cromer Skate Park when he completes a Skydive!!Having spent many years coaching Youth Football, Phil is very keen on seeing both boys andgirls of all ages and abilities follow their passions and desires and pursue their hobbies in thebest surroundings with the best facilities and most of all with friends and other like-mindedpeople.

"Let’s face it," says Phil, "we all know kids tend to get a rough deal in general these days. They can’t gather in groups, wear what they want or enjoy theirfavourite pastime without getting some stick from someone. This SkatePark is a must not just for the guys who want to use it, but Cromer aswell – it will create a great place for people to meet, and to practise theirsport, whether it is Boarding, Scooter or BMX, but it will also create an-other great ‘draw’ for the town – look at the success of the Mundesleyand Sheringham Parks."

Phil and wife Kay meet a lot of the guys in the shop as they look at thelatest gear, and have got to know many of them well. "They are greatkids, polite, well behaved and well-spoken, but above all show real passion for their sport," enthused Kay.

Phil is currently looking for sponsors for his jump and although verygrateful to those who have already donated, he desperately wants moreto sponsor him.

Norman Lamb welcomesfree school meals for infants in EnglandFrom September 2014 all infant school pupils including 26,162 in Nor-folk will benefit from a free hot and healthy meal at lunchtime.

Last month Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister NickClegg announced that every child in infant school in England will re-ceive a free school lunch.

The Coalition will fund schools in England to provide free meals for allchildren in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in a measure that will savefamilies £400 a year per child while helping to raise school standardsand cut the attainment gap.

Universal free school meals for primary school pupils were a key rec-ommendation in a recent review of school food produced independentlyfor the Department for Education. The review found that, in pilots whereall children had been given a free school dinner, students were academi-cally months ahead of their peers elsewhere and more likely to eat veg-etables at lunchtime.

At the same time, the Coalition will extend free school meals to disad-vantaged students in further education and sixth form colleges. Freeschool meals are currently available only for eligible students at schoolsixth forms.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said “My ambition is that every pri-mary school pupil should be able to sit down to a hot, healthy lunchwith their classmates every day. We will start with infant school pupilsbecause teaching healthy habits young, and boosting attainment early, will bring the biggest benefits.”

Commenting Norman Lamb said “Millions of parents across the countryare feeling the squeeze. During the course of a year, the average familyspends £400 on lunch for each child. We are determined to ease the fi-nancial burden for these families and give every child the chance in lifethat they deserve, building a stronger economy and a fairer society.”

Waitrose offers free skills training to help tackle youthunemployment in North Walsham as part of a nation-wide initiative by the entire food and grocery industry.Youngsters from in and around North Walsham had the opportunity togain the skills they need to get into work when they visited WaitroseNorth Walsham as part of a nationwide campaign to tackle youth unem-ployment in September.Following the success of a pilot project in 2012, the entire food and gro-cery industry has launched Feeding Britain’s Future – Skills for WorkMonth 2013. Last year 70 businesses participated, in 700 locations, including Wait-rose branches in the North East. The campaign provided 10,000 skillstraining opportunities with 98% of participants saying they felt moreconfident applying for a job, and over half having secured a job sincethey took part in the campaign’s workshops. Youngsters from NorthWalsham took part in workshops with the Waitrose Personnel Managerslast month covering topics including how to complete job applications, mock interview practice and CV writing. They were also given the opportunity to find out about career opportuni-ties in the retail industry and at the end of the workshop were given acertificate to confirm their attendance. Feeding Britain’s Future, led by industry research body IGD with the

support of Jobcentre Plus, is the first initiative of its kind, giving youngpeople access to farms, factories and stores, and firsthand knowledge ofthe skills needed for a career in the food industry or elsewhere.Ashley Broad, Branch Manager at Waitrose North Walsham said "Wait-rose is committed to helping young people to get into work, particularlyduring these difficult economic times. Two fifths of our workforce isunder 25* and young people are vital to the success of our business. Theteam here at Waitrose North Walsham are really passionate about work-ing with young people to help them develop their understanding of the food industry and inspire them in their endeavours to get into theworkplace."Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive, IGD, said “The UK food andgrocery industry employs 3.7 million people - making us Britain’sbiggest private sector employer. With that scale comes responsibility -we have a vital role to play in tackling youth unemployment by sharingour advice and experience. Feeding Britain’s Future is bringing the in-dustry together to share the rules of the game with young people. We need your help to provide unemployed 16-24 year-olds with the skillsand confidence to make the most of job opportunities.”

Stylish New Look for Sheringham Little TheatreVisitors to the Sheringham Little Theatre will soon discover the coastalvenue has been given a completely new box office and café area.Work is currently underway to refurbish the foyer and visitor areas ofthe popular theatre, with a grand opening planned for Saturday, 30 November.

Debbie Thompson, director of the Little Theatre, said the refurbishmentwould make access to the box office and café much easier and wouldallow more people to enjoy the space.

“We were very lucky to receive a grant of £66,000 from the NorfolkCounty Council Community Construction Fund to improve the box office and café bar. This will see us move the box office and make it far more open and welcoming,” she said.

“At the same time we are moving the bar into the centre of the café, improving the flow for customers and to make it more efficient in termsof how the food is served.”

The refurbishment will allow up to 62 people to be seated and will create more cohesion between the theatre itself and the interval area.

It is the second phase of a major renovation programme at the LittleTheatre. The first stage saw the refurbishment of the exterior of thebuilding while the third phase – expected to take place in 2014 – willsee the creation of a new education and youth space.

“We are really looking forward to the new look café and box office,”she said. “Not only will the changes enhance the whole experience for

theatre-goers but they will also be of great benefit to our fantastic armyof volunteers who run the café for us.

“We will be holding a grand opening from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, 30November and hope members of the public will come along to see thenew areas for themselves and to meet members of our pantomime cast.”

Vodafone SignalLoss AgainNorman Lamb has written to the Chief Executive ofVodafone, Guy Lawrence, to challenge Vodafoneover its continued signal problems on the North Nor-folk Coast. The local MP was made aware of theproblems after two constituents contacted him to saythey had been without signal for three days. In his letter, Norman Lamb commented that “Forthere to have been yet another significant loss ofservice for Vodafone customers after the disruptionthat has already occurred recently is incredibly frus-trating for customers. I also do not think it is accept-able. I would be grateful in the first instance if youcould confirm what steps are being taken to rectifythe problem as a matter of urgency. I would also begrateful if you could arrange for a senior representa-tive of Vodafone UK to meet with me in North Nor-folk to discuss steps that can be taken to improve theresilience of your network to ensure that this doesnot happen again”. Norman Lamb met with representatives of the Coun-tryside Alliance, who are running a “Sick of No Sig-nal” campaign in rural areas to urge networks toimprove their signal in the countryside.

St Nicholas Church Fete SuccessOnce again the Church Fete on 7 September proved a huge success. As always it was the gallant helpers that got the show up and running, working both Friday and Saturday. It wouldn’t have happened without those who donated all the variousitems for sale - books, bric-a brac, bling, plants, electrical, handmadecards, CDs, DVDs, crafts, bottles, cakes, toys etc etc. and of course allthe businesses in the town who supported the raffle including the freeloan of a large van from Trevor Charles and a Skip from Carl Bird. The weather on the day was perfect and attracted the crowds whosnapped up a bargain and had a delicious bacon bap with a cup of tea.Their support gave us over £2400 – verified by our in-house accountingteam. From the Fete Committee – A big thank you to everyone who helped setup, to those who donated items and to those who came on the day tomake a purchase.

The Jetty Cafe, on Cromer High Street, has been included in a new Top50 ‘Must Eat’ list compiled by some of Britain’s most famous foodies.

The Kenwood Food Lovers Bucket List has been compiled forKenwood, the UK’s leading kitchen appliance brand, by a panel of six

esteemed culinary experts including TV chef Simon Rimmer, writer andeditor of Waitrose Kitchen magazine William Sitwell and restaurantcritic Giles Coren. It covers the essential food experiences that Britsshould have in a lifetime; including ingredients to try, recipes to make at home, UK restaurants to visit and culinary adventures around theworld.

Enjoying fresh seafood by the sea features in the top 50 food experiences and The Jetty Cafe has been named as one of the best placesin the UK to indulge. Well known for its award-winning fresh Cromercrab salad, The Jetty Cafe is loved by locals and visitors alike.

Louise Gillespie, who owns and runs The Jetty Cafe, is delighted to havemade it into the top 50 list, commenting: “Many visitors come to Cromerto eat delicious crab and the experience of eating crab sandwiches andsalads is made more special with the smell of salt in the air and the sunshining! We are thrilled that The Jetty Café and Cromer have been mentioned in the list and would like to take the opportunity to thank oursupplier Davies Fish Shop of Cromer for such wonderful local produce.”Simon Rimmer explains, “We’ve pulled together what we believe to bethe ultimate, unmissable gastronomic experiences for food-loving Brits.

From the simple pleasures of a fresh crab sandwich eaten on the beach,to soaking up the spice markets of Marrakech, there’s something onthere for everyone. We hope it inspires foodies to get out and try newthings, or even create their own Food Bucket Lists to munch their waythrough.”

And it follows new research from Kenwood that shows how much Britshave become obsessed with food - with six in ten people from the East(61%) saying they would choose a great food experience over any other‘life’ experiences, including pampering, animal safaris or extreme sportslike sky diving.

Mark Swift, Director of Marketing for Kenwood, says: “It’s amazing tosee what an effect food has on our lives. It’s such a fundamental part ofBritish culture. We’ve pulled together the Food Lovers Bucket List tohelp people experience the very best that food has to offer both here andabroad, and The Jetty Cafe has a very well deserved mention on the list.”The Kenwood Food Lovers Bucket List can be viewed in full atwww.kenwoodworld.com/uk.
