Norfolk artist donates one of hispaintings to the East AnglianChildren Hospice Love Art appealPeter Herring of East Anglian Children's Hospice (EACH) recently visited North Walsham artist Jamie Cooper to pick up a painting for thecharities Love Art appeal.

The appeal is being runas a competition byEACH to promote andraise funds for theNook, which is a support complexplanned to be built infive acres of idyllicwoodland near Framlingham Pigot, just south of Norwich.

As well as the competition, EACH are asking local artists to donate artwork to the appeal. It was this call-to-action to which Jamie responded. The competition runs until 1 November and artists can find further information on the website at www.each.org.uk/the-nook/events/details/loveart-competition.

Jamie Cooper opened his gallery/studio at Alby Craft Centre earlier this month. He said 'When I saw the appeal was running I thought that I had a painting I could spare. I have previously taken part in threedragon boat races to raise money for EACH and organised and submitted a team when I used to work at EAGIT Ltd. (East AnglianGroup Industrial Training). It's a charity that seems to get things done and I am pleased to be able to help’.

Local disaster movie forNorthrepps! The next film being put on by Northrepps Film Society is a true localdisaster movie: Floods of East Anglia, 1912-53.

Consisting mainly of archive news footage, this vividly recalls some of the sea’s most dramatic invasions of our coast and shows the chaoscaused as homes and livelihoods are swept away. As it lasts little morethan an hour it will be preceded by a second, shorter film of local interest to fill out the evening.

The show is on Thursday 12 November (not the first Thursday of themonth, as usual) when doors at Northrepps Village Hall open at 7pmwith drinks for sale until the first film starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5payable at the door. We hope to see you there!

GP Practices in North Norfolk and rural Broadland are urging patients to help themselves stay well this winter by booking in for a free NHS flu vaccination.

People with serious health conditions, adultsover 65, some carers and healthy children between the age of 2 and 4 all qualify for onefree from the NHS.

Pregnant women and children in primaryschool years one and two are also eligible. The call from local GP Practices comes just asthe NHS prepares to launch a major new healthcampaign called Stay Well This Winter.

The very first message of this new campaignwill be about flu:

“Don’t put it off. Take up the offer fromyour GP as soon as you can”

GPs and nurses at your local medical practiceare geared up to vaccinate patients over thecoming weeks. Many have arranged special fluvaccination sessions.

Jackie Schneider, nurse member of the Governing Body at NHS North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group and its Head of Patient Safety and Clinical Quality, said“Dedicated ‘flu clinics are run by almost all GPpractices up and down the country. If you booka slot at a special clinic, you can ensure you get the vaccine early and have the maximumbenefit through the autumn and winter months”

“We strongly urge everyone who meets theNHS eligibility criteria to ring their GP Practice and make sure they get vaccinatedpromptly.”

The clinics – as experienced patients will know– are usually very busy and well co-ordinatedaffairs. Teams of doctors and nurses are onhand to vaccinate a patient every two minutesor so.

The flu jab for adults – and nasal sprays forchildren – can be a lifesaver. It is safe and itcannot give you flu, because itdoes not contain live viruses.

Flu is not like a bad cold, it is a debilitating condition which affects the whole body. It can increase the risk of developingmore serious illnesses such asbronchitis and pneumonia, or canmake existing conditions worse.Serious cases of flu can result inbeing admitted to hospital, and insome instances could be fatal.

Jon Cox, Consultant from PublicHealth Norfolk, said “As we ageour immune systems become lesseffective, so it is important that patients over 65 take advantage of the flu jab.

“It’s also important that pregnant

mums, people with underlying long-termhealth problems and young children have thevaccine because they are more vulnerable toserious illness if they catch flu.

“The vaccine is the best possible protectionagainst the flu virus. Even if you have had thevaccination before, because the type of virus incirculation changes every year, it is importantthat you get the jab every winter.

Paston Sixth Form College has had a recordyear, with more students than ever startingUniversity courses this Autumn.

It has placed 60% of its students at University, beating the 2010/11 cohort, when 59% wereplaced. To add to the record, 21% of the students are starting at Russell Group Universities thisyear. This includes a record six studentswho gained places at Oxbridge.

There have been a number of factorscontributing to the record. The outstanding A levelresults, with 49%achieving A* -B topgrades and 75% A*-C grades, helpedstudents secure their offers. All staffworked hard encouraging students tobe more ambitious and have high aspirations. A poster campaign inclassrooms and additional HE sessionsthroughout the year paid off. Paston’sspecialist tutors and HE mentorsworked with students on the fine details of their applications and personal statements, providing support throughout the process. Finally students were encouraged by a numberof ex Paston students, who gave uptheir time on presentations in College, promoting the benefits of a Universityeducation, leading to a range of careers. Despite all the negativity

publicity surroundingfees and graduate employment in themedia, it is pleasingthat Paston students cansee the long term careerand financial benefitsof going to University.

Overall in the countryUniversity entrantspassed 500,000 last year with 1.7 million offers made, this is likely to have increased this Autumn. The economic recovery is also significantly boosting the graduatejobs market.

Kevin Grieve Principal said “I was

extremely pleased to see so many students with high aspirations and ambition going toUniversity this year. Students and their parentsrealise the benefits of going to University. The majority of careers where good incomesare guaranteed require graduate entry. I am extremely proud of the achievements of thisyear group.”

REGULAR EVENTS

North Walsham & District Historical SocietyWith the huge on-going success of “Who DoYou Think You Are?” it was understandable thatour speaker, family historian and writer Gill Blanchard, kept us enthralled at our recent meeting.First of all she outlined the various resourcesavailable to a budding family historian. In thiscounty, these range from the Norfolk RecordOffice, Heritage Centre, Norfolk Family HistorySociety, museums and libraries. Nationally theyinclude the National Archives at Kew, the General Records Office and the British Newspaper Archive.Certificates of births, marriages and deaths (issued since 1837) can provide a wealth of information such as parents’ names, fathers’names and occupations of a marrying couple, cause of death and details and address of informant. They are the central stepping stonesin any successful family history search.Census returns, accessed through such sites asancestry.co.uk and findmypast.com, are now

readily available andmuch used by familyhistorians. The returnshave become more sophisticated sincetheir introduction inthe early 19th century and census returns from1841 to 1911 can variously provide addresses, names, relationships to head of household, mental capacity (e.g. imbecile?, lunatic?), occupation, years married, children born, children died etc.Wills can be fascinating; revealing secrets andscandals such as the man who disinherited hisdaughter for, “behaving like a trollop.” Misbehaving sons seem to have been less censured! Or the vicar of one parish who lefthis estate to an unrelated lady and her children...Parish Poor Law records of the “deservingpoor” (e.g. sick, elderly) and “undeservingpoor” (or the “won’t work”) can reveal much, ascan records of the various Union Workhousesset up after 1834. Other resources include

Maps, Trade Directories (e.g. Kelly’s), Apprenticeship papers, Prison Records, CourtBooks, Emigration schemes and Transportationdocuments. Exploring your family history, as opposed tostraightforward genealogy, provides context: thepersonal economic and social details of whereand how your family lived. Increased access tovaluable records, especially through the internet, has made this journey much more productiveand hence enjoyable. Our next meeting is at 7.30pm, Thursday 5thNovember, 2015, in St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham when John Balls will be talking about“The History of Musicals.” Visitors are warmlywelcomed.

WHAT’S ON WHERE

North Walsham Times 481 October 24th 2015 10

Fun and Finger Food were the words on every-one’s lips at Sheringham Community centre inOctober. Age was again proven to be just anumber as everyone at Age Concern NorthNorfolk helped celebrate Older People’s Day.Activities, cake and song and dance were en-

joyed by an attendance of nearly a 100 people,of various ages. The event was freeto attend and therewere informationstands to help allowpeople access to,and have knowledge of, local services that canhelp them in later life. These stands includedBen’s Workforce, North Norfolk CommunityTransport, Age Concern North Norfolk DayCentre and the North Norfolk District Coun-cil’s Care and Repair Team. As well as this there was plenty of advice onhand in the form of The Older People’s Forum,Age UK Norfolk, a Community Support Officer from the Police and the Coordinator ofthe scheme Be Ready for It. A volunteer forNorth Norfolk Stories was also on hand to in-troduce, and to encouragecontributors, to their OralHistory project, whichtakes audio recordings ofmemories from peoplewho have lived and

worked in the area so they can put them to-wards an exhibition starting in the New Year.

It was an inspiring event to be a part of and to see that a part of our society all too easilyoverlooked, and dismissed, had a voice of their

own. All who attended were asstrong and full of life, with adrive to succeed and determina-tion to live life to thefull, as they were (insome cases) 80 yearspreviously - puttingmany of the youngergenerations to shame (especiallyon the dance floor) and provingonce again that age need not be abarrier to a happy later life whengiven the support, encouragementand understanding of their

younger peers.

A further aim of the eventwas to help highlightthe isolation and loneli-ness that has been anincreasing part of liv-ing longer and the

ways in which we can, to-gether, combat that. Ouroverall aim, ideally, wouldbe to also reach those peo-ple from rural areas whocould not otherwise accesssuch events and local serv-ices.

Organisations such as the Sheringham libraryand our Age Concern North Norfolk’s ownComputer Support Group are two such

schemes that aim to help lessen that iso-lation and general anxiety and they wereboth well attended during the event.

Age Concern North Norfolk Befriendingscheme, funded by the National Lottery, also had many requests for a volunteer to

pay them, or a loved one, a visit. There was alot of interest in volunteering as a befriender, where we arrange for a volunteer to visit anelderly person in their own ome, whether it befor a chat or just a nice cuppa. We are always

on the lookout for NewVolunteers (MuchNeeded) across the wholeof North Norfolk to helpreduce loneliness

amongst the elderly and if you are interested inlearning more then we would love to hear fromyou, please just call 01263 823126 for more in-formation. As well as this there was gentle exercise withMary Russell, of the Older People’s Forum, a

local illustrator EyizeraPhoenix offering suport(and sweets) and even achance for a hand or footmassage, which, not sur-prisingly, was extremelypopular, with Erica, whoalso kindly signposted thesession onto a local be-reavement support group atthe Salvation Army in Sher-ingham.

Age Concern North Nor-folk would like to

say a big thank you to everyone who attended, including the local organisations who camewith their information stands as well as all thewonderful volunteers who helped make theteas and cakes and sold raffle tickets on theday. Over £100 was raised in various guisesthroughout for good causes.

If you would like to find out more about any of the above, including how to become a befriender please call Age Concern North Norfolk on 01263 823126

For the pupils of Millfield Primary School in North Walsham never havetruer words been spoken. Every year Millfield leads the way in successwhether in academia, sports or being part of successful pilot schemessuch as the ‘Classics for All’ Latin programme.

The children celebrated the end of the academic year with great SATSresults. Overall the results were in line or above the National Average in every aspect of Key Stage 2, with 20/24 measures being above. Manyof the results were well above, particularly the percentage of childrenachieving higher level 5 in Reading, Writing, Maths, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. The results show the continued upward trend over the last three years.

On returning to school this year and flush with success, the childrenwere ecstatic to learn that they had been awarded another three

awards over the summer.

The first of which, was gaining the prestigious British Council International School Award. Within the congratulatory letter from the council they stated ‘Your plans for sustaining your international journey show that the global dimension is now firmly embedded in your school ethos. NORTH WALSHAM TOWN COUNCILANNUAL NEWSLETTER 2015Greetings from the Town MayorIt is with great pleasure that I write this greeting to you. Thank you for the opportunity to 'sing the praises' of our fabulous market town, the largest in NorthNorfolk. As I am sure you are aware this town has an amazing history datingfrom Anglo-Saxon times. Along with Worstead, it became famous for textiles

in the 12th Century and our Parish church of St Nicholas was built from this textile wealth. St Nicholas Church, famous for its ruined tower, which was secured only this year, also houses artefacts such as medieval painted screens and a telescopic gothic font. North Walsham was also involved in the Peasant's Revolt of 1381 and there is a wayside stone near the water tower commemorating the ensuing Battle of North Walsham. North Walsham also has historical links to Lord Horatio Nelson and Sir William Paston through our wonderful Paston College.

Today it has many current attractions such as The Motorcycle Museum, Davenport's MagicalKingdom, Victory Swimming Pool and Gym, Rossi's to name but a few. We also have wonderfulvolunteers and support groups who make our town a better place to live in such as North Walsham in Bloom, making our town beautiful, Heritage Groups, keeping our history alive, Arts North Norfolk, keeping us informed and entertained and many many more. North Walshamalso has many fabulous small businesses who support our town and 'go that extra mile' alongsidethe 'big boys' like Lidl, Waitrose, Sainsbury, Roy's, QD etc.

For the future, we as a Town Council and this year myself as Town Mayor, have been trying toraise North Walsham's profile both locally and further afield by organising end of month SundayMarkets with entertainment supported by our businesses and community. The festival with walking procession was well attended and we are hoping to do more of this using our local assetssuch as the Memorial Park but not forgetting the fabulous work of our Town Councillors and volunteers who give give up their precious time for our wonderful Fun Day and Christmas LightsMarkets. I think with public support and will North Walsham can rise again as it did after TheGreat Fire in 1600.

Annual Report Some of the highlights in North Walsham over the past 12 months have been:JD Wetherspoon: NNDC and JD Wetherspoon have agreed in principal the sale of the currentCouncil Offices. The Town Council continues its search for new premises, and is working closelywith North Norfolk District Council to ensure that appropriate facilities continue to be available.

Sunday Markets: Beginning in January 2015, a trial run of artisan/farmers’ markets opened in Market Place on the final Sunday of each month. The Council subsequently approved the continuation of these successful events, and this will continue in 2016. The income from stall fees is splitequally between local charities and projects through which the Council supports the markets.

Council Tax: The Town Council was able to keep its Council Tax precept to an amount onlyslightly higher than the previous year. The primary reasons for the small increase are the likely increase to accommodation costs and further contributions towards Highways improvementsthrough a successful bid to the County Council’s Parish Partnership Scheme to fund 50% of thecosts of three projects – the installation of a trod footpath along Bacton Road leading towards the town centre from The Shires; a third SAM2 movable speed awareness sign; and 20mph flashing ‘wig wag’ signs for installation in the vicinity of North Walsham High School. The TownCouncil again received a support grant from the District Council, helping to keep the increase

1

Page 16: North Wahsam Times 481

to a minimum. Of course, the Town Council could have said “no” to any increase in Council Tax, but then we would not have been able to support projects that are vital to the town and community.

St Nicholas Court: Responsibility for the common land at St Nicholas Court precinct remainsunresolved. However, NNDC has completed a compulsory purchase on the 4 Market Street site, with the area to be landscaped to allow clear views of the Church Tower. Work is due to commence in the near future.

Woodville Park: One of three parks owned by the Town Council, Woodville has suffered from a lack of investment in comparison to the other three. Following an approach from residents, theCouncil agreed to put £5,000 from its Reserve Fund towards investing in upgraded facilities atWoodville, and we have just been advised that North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fundwill be investing a similar sum in some items specifically designed to be accessible to those withdisabilities.

Christmas Lights and Fun Day: Thanks once again to the Christmas Lights Group for their sterling work through the year to ensure that the town is prepared and lit for Christmas, and to thelocal businesses who continue to support their work. Thanks also to the Fun Day Committee forcontinuing to organise the annual event in the War Memorial Park.

Dates for your diaries: Christmas Street Fair and Switch-On – Saturday 28 November 2015Civic Service – Sunday 7 June 2015Fun Day – Sunday 26 June 2016Fun Fair 2016 – tbcChristmas Market – Sunday 20 December 2015 (100% of stall fees to Town Mayor’s Annual Charity)Sunday markets continue on the last Sunday of each month.

Norman Lamb calls on DistrictCouncil to offer low-cost energy deal to North Norfolk residentsNorman Lamb is urging North Norfolk District Council to help bringabout real savings for local residents on their energy bills.

Recent media coverage has revealed that a number of councils acrossthe country are now offering gas and electricity to the public – in a direct challenge to the big six energy companies. Norman Lamb is keenfor North Norfolk District Council to get in on the act.

The savings are made possible by local councils using their buyingpower to negotiate competitive arrangements with energy companies, and it is estimated that savings of £250 per year can be made on ahousehold bill.

One such deal, negotiated by Southend Council, also includes a guarantee that 33% of electricity will come from ‘green’ sources. Theyare also able to offer a 100% green option for customers who are happyto pay a little bit more.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said ‘It would be really brilliant if NorthNorfolk District Council could adopt this innovative approach beingtaken by a number of councils around the country. I am conscious thatthe potential savings on offer are quite significant. Many householdscould really do with a reduction in their energy bills of this sort.’

Commenting, Eric Seward (Liberal Democrat District Councillor) said‘This is certainly something that the District Council should be lookingat. I know that Norman has encouraged the Chief Executive of theCouncil to follow the lead of these pioneering councils. The Liberal Democrat group are absolutely in favour of the Council helping to reduce people’s energy bills and particularly on using green energysources. We will continue to make the case to the Conservative administration that they should learn from other progressive councilsand do something which could clearly benefit a great number of NorthNorfolk residents.’

Norman Lamb is also running a survey to find out how many peoplemight be interested in such a scheme if it were to be offered by the District Council. To make your voice heard go tonormanlamb.org.uk/energydeal

Norman Lamb speaks to Pastonstudents about mental healthNorth Norfolk MP Norman Lamb says hewants Britain to be a world leader in providingcare and support for those dealing with mentalhealth issues.

Speaking to students at Paston Sixth Form College in North Walsham, Mr Lamb said "Itwas great to have the opportunity to talk aboutthe importance of investment in mental healthservices. It is brilliant that the students wantedto raise this. The moral and the economic case for investment in mental health is overwhelming. It is morally wrong and economically stupid to neglect mental health. It is estimated that mental ill health costs the economy up to£100bn a year. The impact on families is incalculable. I want this country to lead the world in understanding theimportance of giving people speedy access to care and support and inaccepting the case for equality for those suffering mental ill health.

From jugglers to cookery demonstrations and Kids Cooking Workshops to chocolate making, this year’s Aylsham Food Festival, organised by Slow Food Aylsham, was sure to provide something for Norfolk foodies! Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Festival started on Wednesday 30September with a talk in the library about Norwich’s chocolate historyplus a Harvest Lunch in Aylsham’ parish church which also played hostto the next two days of Kids Cooking Workshops. Children from theAylsham Cluster’s primary schools were tasked with making a fresh fruitsponge to take home and this was baked off at the town’s Co-op store. The Co-op also kindly supplied most of the ingredients for these eventswhich proved very popular with the youngsters.

Friday morning featured Aylsham Country Market where samples of theMarket’s many products were available to taste.

Friday evening saw the traditional Food Festival Gala Dinner at AylshamHigh School. Over 110 guests sat down to a splendid 5-course mealwhich was sourced, prepared, cooked and served by students, led by

their Catering Captain MollyBowyer. Head of the Hospitality &Catering department,Jason Baxter, wasoverseeing the proceedings with assistance from twolocal chefs, AlastairBradshaw, cateringmanager at the National Trust’s Felbrigg Hall and

Steve Norgate, head chef at the Beechwood Hotel in North Walsham.Helping ‘front of house’ was Adam Fields from the Dales CountryHouse Hotel in Upper Sheringham.

The proceeds of a raffle held during the evening, plus a donation fromticket sales, allowed Slow Food Aylsham to make a donation of over£700 to the Liz Jones Memorial Fund for Children, set up last year inmemory of one of the founders of the organisation.

After dinner speaker was Chairman of Norfolk Food & Drink Ltd, Sarahde Chair, who spoke warmly of the school and its students, praising thehigh standard of cuisine and serving skills on display. “Thank you somuch for inviting me to your dinner this year”, she said, “It was a wonderful experience and lovely to see first-hand what everyone hasbeen talking about for years.”

Slow Food Aylsham dubbed the penultimate day of the Festival ‘Showcase Saturday’. Attracting large numbers of visitors to the town, it featured awide range of events, from a cookery demonstration kitchen with six topNorfolk chefs, to family cooking workshops, chocolate making, sugarcraft and apple pressing. Lighthearted entertainment was provided byGordon Blur, the juggling chef and Aylsham’s One Foot in the Groovejazz band. Most of these activities were in the Market Place and TownHall which also hosted the FARMA-accredited Farmers Market.

Aylsham’s Heritage Centre was the venue for a wine tasting on Saturdayevening while the following morning saw the traditional finale to Aylsham Food Festival, the Big Slow Breakfast. Some 70 diners satdown to a ‘Full English’, prepared and cooked by members of SlowFood Aylsham and friends who, once the last guest had departed, treatedthemselves to brunch with what was left.

Aylsham Food Festival has, in its 10-year history, evolved to becomeone of the town’s most important annual events. Chairman of Slow FoodAylsham, Roger Willis, summed it up: “We are very proud to be able topresent such a popular event which is designed to appeal to the wholecommunity. Our members work extremely hard to make sure everythingruns smoothly and this year has been another tribute to their efforts. Rollon 2016!”

Several of our older cats have recently been re-homed with people whohave taken into consideration their own ages and the age of the cats inquestion. Mange Tout, is now happily settled and is enjoying havingextra space, which provides him with more opportunities to exercise tohelp him lose weight. He has also been registered with his new vet, hismedical history has been transferred to them and he will be going to see one of the nurses there for regular weight checks, which are free.Pickles, whose e-photo we featured last time, has also left for her newhome, together with her sister, Penelope. They came into care becausetheir owner moved and could not take them with her, so it was essentialthat we made sure their future was assured so that they will not need tocome into care again.

We often receive requests for help with feral colonies and although weare happy to loan out our traps and pay for the cats to be neutered, due toother pressures on our time, we cannot normally help with the actualtrapping. When dealing with colonies, it is essential the person who hasthe problem co-operates with us and that all the cats are caught andneutered. If not, the problem will continue and time and money willhave been wasted. With the help of a neighbour, we are at present dealing with one such colony, which has been an ongoing problem forseveral years. We have in the past had several cats there neutered and

taken in quite a fewkittens. At present we

feel optimistic that, this time, all the adult cats will be caught(the neighbour had not realisedthe extent of the problem) andat the time of writing we havetaken in 16 kittens from the site. Althoughsome of them were quite youngand friendly on arrival, othershave needed socialising. Fourof the friendliest ones havebeen moved to another fostererand remarkable progress hasbeen made with the others, some of which are also now available foradoption. We are confident that they will soon all be ready to leave us.Life would have been so much easier if the owner of the site had beenmoreco-operative.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten pleasering 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any otherenquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantageof our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) pleasegive Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visitwww.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Case of Lungworm confirmedin North NorfolkLast month we diagnosed the first case of this increasingly prevalent diseasein our area. For those of you who aren’t aware, canine Lungworm is a parasite which can be picked up from slugs or snails and can potentially be life threatening. In fact, the case we had in at Westover had deterioratedrapidly in only a couple of weeks and given the degree of changes evident on x-rays would probably not have survived for much longer without treatment.

In a nutshell, dogs can pick up lungworm when they eatslugs or snails, the parasite then migrates through the bodyto the dog’s lungs where it can cause serious disease. Commonly this is seen as lethargy, inability to exercise, laboured breathing and coughing, but it can appear moresubtly and cause bleeding disorders, high temperatures andnon-specific signs of illness.

Our lungworm patient is a German Pointer named Otto. We are well acquainted with Otto at Westover as he hassoldiered on through a serious skin condition and somenasty injuries sustained from a car in the past as well. Most recently he presented to us having suddenly becomelethargic and unable to exercise as normal. The rapid

progression to severe lethargy led us to admit him for x-rays and bronchoscopy. The latter procedure involves introducing a tiny camerainto his airways through which were able to take samples and actuallyfound lungworm larvae themselves. This meant we were able to starttreatment immediately and his owner noticed a remarkable improve-ment within 48 hours. A month on and he is now back to normal andeven brighter than before as the disease had probably been making him unwell for some time.

Lungworm is still uncommon in Norfolk, but becoming ever more prevalent. Prevention isstraight forward using a specific type of flea andworm treatment available from most veterinarypractices. If you would like any more informationon lungworm or its prevention feel free to drop usa line and we would be happy to help.

Do you provide B & B or Self-catering accommodation?Do you have a cafe or restaurant?Do you sell mementoes?Do you run attractions or provide services?

Volunteers produce an annual B & B and Self-catering Guide for North-East Norfolk and the North Walsham Area. The Guide alsoinvites advertising from those providing otherservices used by visitors. Up to 2,500 copiesare distributed widely via advice centres inCromer, Mundesley and North Walsham, through libraries, at the attractions, villageshops and so on. The Guide is also popularwith local people needing accommodation for family events. Because it is produced by

volunteers, (supported by North WalshamTown council), advertising rates are low: £40for accommodation providers, and £40 or morefor other advertisers according to the space required. The 2016 edition is now being prepared. If interested, or if you would like tosee a 2015 copy, please phone 01692 404114between 9.30am. and 12.30pm or email us [email protected] are required by early November.

Sunday MarketsAs some readers will be aware, income fromthe Sunday Markets is split 50-50 betweenmarket costs and a donation to a local charity.Following the first such donation to MillfieldPre School, the Town Council agreed to adoptthe theme of education for the remainder ofthis year, and is therefore seeking applications

from local groups/charities involved in thisfield. Further details on how to apply are available from the Town Clerk.

In early September, the Council received theexcellent news that the North Norfolk DistrictCouncil Big Society Fund has agreed toslightly more than match its own contributionto the Woodville play equipment project, by offering funding for three specific items with a particular focus on accessibility for the disabled. Although the search for further funding continues, the Council is now in a position to start work on adding to the verylimited facilities currently available for children at this park. Please phone 01692404114 between 9.30am. and 12.30pm or email us at [email protected]

H.J. Jackson – highly collected and hugely popular Norfolk print artist - celebratesthe release of his new book Afloat andAshore with a showcase exhibition atGallery Plus in Wells-next-the-Sea.When H.J. Jackson produced his first hand-printed linocut in his last year at school, he hadno way of knowing that over 60 years later he would still be printmaking. This small single-colour print of a galleon in full sail was instrumental in helping H.J. Jackson – John to hisfriends – to obtain a place at the Norwich Schoolof Art the following year. It was also directly responsible for him pursuing linocutting as acraft as part of the National Diploma in GraphicDesign.

It was while at the School of Art that John became interested in coastal themes, stimulatedby visits to Sheringham, Cromer and to the fishwharf at Great Yarmouth during the annualvisits by the Scottish Fishing Fleet. By the end of the 1950s, however, his interest was taken upwith the closure of the local Midland and GreatNorthern Joint Railway, where his father, grandfather, and other family members had all worked and the clearance of large areas ofVictorian Norwich.

On leaving Art School, John lost the use of theprint-room equipment and although he could purchase tools, lino and ink, he realised he wouldhave to dispense with the services of a printing

press. After experimenting, he finally settled on a ‘tobacco tin’ as the ideal burnishing tool – a method he still employs today. After working for over 30 years in marketing and publicity, printmaking during evenings and weekends, Johnwas able to pursue linocutting ‘full time’ in 1995.

Now a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society ofPainter Printmakers and a Member of the Societyof Wood Engravers, H.J. Jackson has perfectedhis craft. Working from photographic reference,John produces a drawing to the size of the proposed print. He then plans the number of linoblocks needed, some printing more than onecolour. The drawing is photocopied onto tracingpaper, reversed and transferred using carbon ontothe lino. With drawing ink, he identifies the areasto be retained before cutting using only two tools:a V tool and a small gauge. The different blocksare printed using oil based inks and pin-hole registration. The printing is carried out entirelyby hand burnishing using the tobacco tin.

The declining fishing industry features stronglyin John’s work, and he likes his boats to look as ifthey have been to sea. The multiple layers of inkresult in a ‘treacly’ appearance, which helps togives them the look of working vessels.

To mark the release of his new book ‘Afloatand Ashore’, H.J. Jackson will be exhibiting ashowcase of his recent linocuts, including hismuch-loved images of Norfolk boats, atGallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea.

The exhibition, which will also include workby other Gallery Plus print artists, opens withan all-day preview on Saturday 24 October –all welcome to join us for a glass of Prosecco -and continues daily until Saturday 31 October.Open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm, plus Sun-day 25 October 11am-4pm.

John will be in attendance at the previewto sign copies of his book and will beavailable to chat to about his work andhistory in the industry. He will also bedemonstrating his linocutting techniquesduring two sessions - morning and afternoon - on the preview day.Gallery Plus, Warham Road, Wells, NR23 1QA01328 711609 [email protected]
