The County Leader carried out it’s own research into the travel times from Swords to the city centre, at different times of the day, using different bus services, with startling results. The proposed new service is claimed to reduce travel time from Swords to O'Connell Bridge by half, to just 35 minutes (not including the airport). On the face of it, this seems quite impressive, until we sent one of our journalists on a number of bus journeys, to and from the city centre, from Swords. We discovered that the longest time taken was 45 minutes. This survey was taken on Tuesday last, when our journalist travelled on the 41C bus, which left Swords at 1.35pm and reached it’s destination at Lower Abbey Street at 2.16pm, a total of 41 minuutes. It is worth noting that this bus travelled through River Valley estate, which the new Swiftway won't do. This added significant time to the journey, yet the differ- ence is only six minutes. The journey back to Swords took 35 minutes, leaving the city at 2.55pm and reaching Swords at 3.30pm Our journalist travelled to the city centre on the Swords Express on the same day. This journey took 34 minutes, with the return journey taking a mere 24 minutes. Furthermore, our researcher surveyed the time taken from the airport to the city centre on Aircoach, and the time taken was an impressive 18 minutes, with the number 41 bus taking 13 minutes to reach the airport. A survey of passengers was also undertaken, with most people expressing their satis- faction with the service as it stands. The result of this survey can be seen on page 6 of this paper. To copperfasten our research, a further journey was also taken on Thursday last on the number 41. This bus left Swords Main Street at 9.19am and arrived in O'Connell Street at 10.04am, a journey time of 45 minutes. It is important to note that this bus went through the airport. These times make nonsense of the NTA figures. Many locals believe that the agenda here is to preserve Dublin Bus' stake in the Swords route, by introducing Swiftway, instead of a light rail system. Indeed, local senator, Darragh O'Brien pulled no punches, when he asserted that we, the people of Swords, had been 'sold a pup' in terms of this rail project going ahead, and that Swiftway is now a permanent replacement service for the promised rail system. From this, it is quite clear that the Swiftway service, which has already caused an uproar in parts of Swords, is a shameful waste of taxpayers’ money. It is now abundantly evident that the cost of approxi- mately 150 million represents very poor value for money. Bus travellers can now, as demonstrated, get from Swords to the city centre, on a variety of bus services, in around six minutes more than the proposed Swiftway service. The existing bus service does not take anything like the time the NTA claims, so why are we spending a whopping 150 million on a project that many regard as utterly unnecessary, and saves about six minutes per journey. The fact that roads are going to be dug up and commuters will be subjected to more demor- alising roadworks, on their journey to the city, and all for just six minutes!. The cost benefit analysis of this project should make interesting reading. Locals to whom we have spoken say the entire project smacks of an elaborate sham and is clearly deigned to replace the light railway system, that has been promised by local politicians for the last two decades. Obstacles have regularly been placed in the way of this vital piece of infrastructure going ahead. Every candidate in general elections over the past 20 years, has promised a light rail system for the North County. Many angry residents, who spoke to this newspaper, are adamant that the North County is regarded as the 'runt of the litter' as far as other areas of the city are concerned. They cite the fact that south Dublin already has a light rail service in the form of the Luas, as well as the DART service. Throw in the fact that an international airport is located in the heart of the North County, and the lack of a light rail system is seen as an absolute disgrace, that leaves a lasting impression on the many visitors, who must be aghast at their first impression of a city without a decent transport service. Rush man, Thomas Lynch had reasonto celebrate last weekend, when hewas awarded a certificate and silver pinfrom the Irish Specimen FishCommittee (ISFC) for his capture of noless than 10 specimen fish last year. The award was presented to him at therecent Irish Specimen Awards Day bythe Minister of State for NaturalResources, Fergus O’Dowd and DrRobert Rosell, chairman of SpecimenFish Committee. Thomas had a greatyear in angling terms, as catching 10specimen-sized fish last year alone isan excellent achievement. According tothe IFSC, many anglers can take manyyears to catch 10 specimens andsome struggle to catch evenone, so the local man hasdone very well indeed.Speaking to the CountyLeader, Thomas said he wasvery happy to have receivedthe sliver pin and certificate:“A lot of work goes intocatching Specimen Fish, so I

was delighted. There’s a lot of specificsthat goes into that particular type offish, so I was chuffed to get 10 ofthem.” “These Specimen Fish are fishabove a threshold weight set by theISFC which represent the bigger fish forthat species,” he explained. “Anglerswho catch a specimen fish must weighit and measures its length beforesubmitting it.” This seasoned angler, has been fishing since he was fiveyears old, when his late father intro-duced him to the hobby. “It’s alwaysbeen just a hobby of mine, but some-thing that I really enjoy,” he continued.

“I found it was something I coulddo that I was good at, which

helped as well!” Heexplained that he waslooking to catch 10 differentspecies this year andwas well on his way tohitting his target, as he has seven

collected already.

Council Must BuyPrime SwordsSite - ButlerA local councillor is calling on theCounty Council to purchase, what isdescribed as ‘a prime site’ which iscurrently for sale.

Swords councillor, Darragh Butler isconvinced that the site, which is locatedat the junction of Brackenstown Roadand Church Road, beside St Columba’sChurch, and is slightly more than anacre in size, would serve as a crucial linkin establishing a river walk, whichwould extend from Swords Park toKnocksedan. Butler told the CountyLeader, “This is a key piece of land, which could well be the golden key inopening up a Swords Heritage trail,

because right beside it we have theChurch, where Brian Boru is believed tohave been waked, as well as a RoundTower and the Square Tower. It’sunique to see the these together and itwould finally allow the Council to openup the Ward Valley.” He continued, “Aheritage trail could start here, taking inSt Colmcille’s Well, St Columba’s

Church and proceeding down to SwordsCastle Park. It could also continue in theopposite direction. The Council havebeen talking for many years, since I waselected first, about opening up the WardValley Park, and having a walkway andcycle way, going all the way toKnocksedan. This is the Council’s bigopportunity to start the process ofbringing this plan to fruition.”“I’m calling on them to purchase thispiece of land, which could be the goldenkey to opening up this heritage trail. The site would also be an ideal locationfor an Interpretative Centre, wherehistorical images of the area can bereadily accessible to all. It could alsohouse a car park, where people can goon walking tours and visit the town, boosting the local economy. This needsto be a community owned facility, whichwill leave something positive for futuregenerations Let’s do something imagi-native with this now,” he concluded.

The hardworking butchers in JC’sin Swords saw the culmination ofhard work and a rather daringcalendar come to fruition onFriday last, as they presented acheque to the Make A WishFoundation for a staggering€20,000. The butchers decided tobare all for a unique charitycalendar, in order to raise muchneeded funds for the charity andwere on hand to present thecheque to the group. The calendar, called ‘Butchers inthe Buff’ was launched late lastyear and 14 cheeky participantsdecided to show more beef thanusual, all for a great cause. TheMake a Wish Foundation Irelandgrants the wishes of childrenaged between three and 17 yearsliving with life-threateningmedical conditions. All the fundsraised will be put to good usethanks to the special efforts ofthe butchers and those whobought the calendar. The

concept was the brainchild ofbutcher, Brendan Collins, whotold the County Leader that hiswife Seppi suggested that theydo something in the same vein as“Calendar Girls,” and so the ideawas born. Managing Director ofJC’s, Michael Savage told theCounty Leader they are delightedto have reached their target. “Wejust want to say thank you somuch to all our generouscustomers for being sosupportive. We were thrilled toreach our target, and so happythat we could help Make a Wish, which is a wonderful cause.Susan O’Dwyer, CEO of Make AWish, who accepted the chequesaid, “This is an incredibleamount of money, generatedfrom a very novel idea. Arguably, the best kept secret in theNorth County is Corduff, which is situ-ated on the R132, old Swords toBalbriggan road. The reason for thissecrecy, is the fact thatthere is no signage forCorduff on any of theapproach roads, from anydirection. Whilst this secrecy may beappealing to some, the lackof signage is having anadverse effect on the busi-ness community of Corduff. So much so, that BalbrigganLocal Area candidate in theupcoming local elections,Cathal Boland (NP) spoke tothe County Leader, abouthow the lack of signage isimpacting on business in thearea. “Ever since the M1motorway came into exis-tence, there has been no signage what-soever for Corduff. Business people inthe area have been asking for signageto be placed at junctions 4 and 5 on theM1 motorway, in both directions. There

are about 13 businesses in the Corduffarea, and they are adamant that theydeserve proper signage to allow ease ofaccess for customers and delivery

services, as well as emergencyservices,” said Boland.Local businesswoman, Helen Dunneruns a beauty college in Corduff, andshe was very vocal about how her busi-

ness is being adversely affected by this.Delivery drivers simply don’t knowwhere we are, which is not a very desir-able situation, when running a busi-ness.” However, ignorance of the exis-tence of Corduff took a bizarre twist afew years ago, when Helen’s premises

was broken into. She said,“Balbriggan Gardai were operatingout of Lusk Garda Station, and Icalled them about the break-in.They had no idea where we werelocated and they ended up inCorduff in Blanchardstowninstead. That’s how unknown weare,” said an exasperated Helen. The only real indication that youare in a village is the local schooland Boland believes that thereshould also be a sign at Blake’sCross, indicating that Corduff isstraight ahead. “There should alsobe a sign as you enter and leavethe village.” Helen Dunne is organ-ising those of us involved in localbusiness, to form a traders’ asso-

ciation, where the business communitycan work together, to address issuesand to form a Neighbourhood Watchscheme,” he said.

Signage Urgently Needed For Corduff

Communities For Over 20 Years

The public consultation process for theproposed new Bus Rapid Transit system, tookplace on Tuesday last, 17th February, at CountyHall in Swords, and attracted much interestfrom local residents, who voiced their concernsabout the new project.Controversy about the route to be taken by thenew bus service in Swords, attracted many resi-dents from Broadmeadows, Castlefarm and PineGrove estates to the information day.Representatives from the National TransportAuthority (NTA), were put to the pins of theircollars by angry residents, who do not want tosee the green spaces where their children playin safety, dug up to facilitate a bus corridor.Local election candidate for Swords, JoeNewman (NP), was present at County Hall, where he met with some angry residents fromBroadmeadows, who vented their fury at theproposed route. Newman told the CountyLeader, ”While we badly need a better transportsystem, it seems to me to be just a glorifiedQBC. If this goes ahead, it looks like the end ofMetro, if the NTA literature is anything to go by.

This whole project was suddenly sprung on thelocal community, without any prior consultationwith residents,” he said.Broadmeadows resident, Philip Glynn said, “Mymain concern is about safety, with the amountof children going to school and playing on thegreen. Elderly people will no longer be able toget across the road, if this goes ahead.”Another resident, Emma Louise Glynn said,“The noise of 30 buses will have a huge impact, as well as joyriders. My daughter, Ruby(4), will no longer be able to play on the green,”she said.Tara Jane Barron said, “They spent millions onresearching this, without consulting any resi-dents, We will no longer be able to access theschool by car. The Council promised thatPinewood Road would never be opened up, butthey’re reneging on this,” she said.Pictured at the public consultation meeting for the newSwiftway Bus Rapid Transit system at County Hall,Swords on Tuesday last, are Philip Glynn, Kenneth Clarke, local election candidate, Joe Newman, Emma Louise Glynn, little Ruby Glynn Clarkeand Tara Jane Barron.

She said, “The next council will have40 members, with more than half ofthese being first time councillors. The newcouncil will need experienced councillors, as

the economy turns and there will be a needf o r s o m e o n e w i t h e x p e r i e n c e a n d a neconomic background, like me. I believe I canbring something to the table to drive theNorth County, in it’s economic re-growth.Another area that she regards as needing

immediate and urgent attention, isSwords Castle and the regeneration ofthe Cast le quarter on Main Street ,where vacant premises are detractingfrom the area.Devitt is looking forward to the chal-lenge ahead, “The next five years willbe really exciting. For the first time,

councillors will be held to account by thepublic, in how they are spending the publicpurse, and not the government purse, asused to be the case,” she concluded.

fixing a large mirror up in a smaller room. This will makethe space appear larger and bounce around any lightcoming in. Keep all large furniture light and bright, making the space around it seem spacious. You canalways add a splash of colour with cushions and throwsif you choose to. A very busy room will seem smaller, soensuring the tones and colour schemes are neutral canhelp make the space feel tidy and bigger. Pale walls willalso make the walls seem further away. Remember, youcan always add texture through accessories but steerclear of heavy curtains as they will create a crampedenvironment.

Bathrooms

While the bathroom can be one of the most expensiverooms to improve, there are several quick changes youcan make that will make an amazing difference.Something as simple as removing unnecessary itemsfrom your bathroom counter can make the room appearless overcrowded so get rid of the old deodorant canthat’s been sitting around for months. Instead replace itwith a decorative vase or a pretty soap dispenser. Youcan pick up any of these items at any of of the localhome stores around theNorth County.Cracked tiles can alsomake the whole roomseem scruffy so replaceany that you have in yourbathroom. This can bedone extremely cheaplyand could even beattempted yourself. However, patience isrequired so take your timeand don’t rush the job.

Fall In Love With Your Home

After a long day at work, its important that enteringyour home makes you feel calm and relaxed. You wantto feel solace and comfort upon returning home. Somany homeowners allow the entrance to their homesto become overgrown and unkempt. You may not see itfrom inside your home, but it’s the very first thing yousee upon arriving back, so always make your front exte-rior and garden a pleasant sight rather than an eyesore.A beautiful new front door will improve the look of yourhome’s exterior immediately. Getting rid and replacingyour tatty, old front door will make coming home adream rather than a nightmare. Something as simple aspainting your current one could have this effect, sochoose a stunning midnight blue or emerald green andattach brushed-nickel address numbers on to it. You

can paint your door yourself, so start by removing it andlaying it flat on to an area covered with a protectivesheet. Next, lightly sand the entire door with fine gritsandpaper and apply your chosen paint colour usingrollers, as they will minimise runs and stroke marks.Use a brush to reach all crevices and you’re done!Flowers are also a great way of improving the way youfeel about coming home. Hanging baskets are veryeasy to maintain and are a perfect way to frame yourfreshly painted, new front door. It’s a good idea togather recommendations from one of North County’slocal stores on which plants will thrive in your area. Also, try planting flowers around your garden path. Balbriggan Braces opened last August at 61Drogheda Street in Balbriggan. The practicewas opened by Dr Aileen Griffin, who grew upand went to school in Balbriggan, beforemoving abroad to study in Cardiff. Dr Griffin identifies Orthodontic treatment asa service that has been relatively inaccessibleto people in the area for many years. Shesays, “Our a im is to prov ide qual i tyOrthodontics at af fordable pr ices to thepeople of Balbriggan and the North County’.The pr ices, which can be v iewed at

www.balbrigganbraces.ie, are very competi-tive and are comparable to those of NorthernIreland practices.”Only the most severe cases are now treatedfree of charge by the HSE. The length of timeon the waiting list is forcing many parents toseek private Orthodontic treatment in localareas. In addition to it’s very reasonableprices, Balbriggan Braces also offers flexible0% interest free payment plans. Typically, there is a down-payment and then thebalance is paid monthly by direct debit, or ini n s t a l m e n t sduring treatment.F u r t h e r m o r e ,they offer a freeinitial consulta-tion, where treat-ment options andpr ic ing arediscussed. Dr Mary Ngeh is the newest member of theteam. Mary has worked as a HSE Orthodontistin Navan for the past 20 years, but has nowstarted a private list at Balbriggan Braces. DrNgeh is very experienced in treating difficultcases and therefore, treats these similarcases at the clinic.Dr Griffin went on to explain the importanceof proper alignment of your teeth and jaws.“This is a key factor in long-term dental

health. Although typical Orthodontic patientslook forward to having a beautiful smile atthe end of treatment, braces also have asignificant positive impact on long-term gooddental health. Malocclusion is the technicalterm used by dentists to describe crooked, spaced, crowded or protruding teeth that donot fit together properly. Malocclusions canbe inherited or can be caused by things suchas thumb-sucking, dental disease, early lossof baby teeth or accidents. While orthodontic treatment can improvesmiles at any age, there may be an optimaltime for individual patients to begin treat-ment, in order to achieve maximum improve-ment in the minimum amount of time. Earlyintervention can make treatment at a laterage shorter and less complicated. Dr Griffin continued, “With early treatment,we can often achieve results that may not bepossible once the face and jaws have finishedgrowing. An early Orthodontic assessmentcan often ease parental concerns aboutcrooked teeth or fac ia l development ;however in general most treatments startfrom aged 10,” she said.“Many adults in Ireland were never presentedwith the opportunity to have straighter teeth, and more and more are starting treatment intheir older years. We find that this sometimes

causes somesl ight in i t ia lembarrassment, but wi th new, more d iscreettechniques inteeth st ra ight-ening and adultbraces becoming

much more commonplace, pat ients arefeel ing less and less anxious aboutembarking on treatment.”Dr Griffin observes that people who havecovered their teeth for many years duringsocial interaction, felt liberated after a shortcourse of Orthodont ic t reatment . AtBalbr iggan Braces, t reatment can beconducted without compromis ing yourl i festyle - your braces do not have to bevisible! Recent innovations for adults includeclear removable plastic aligners and ‘tooth-coloured’ as well as white braces. When planning the new clinic, Dr Griffin wasdetermined to incorporate the best newdental technology into a state of the art prac-tice. “This new technology includes digital x-rays, which reduces the patients’ exposure toradiation by as much as 90 per cent and areimmediate, so there is no time waiting for x-ray films to develop. All instruments are ster-ilised using the latest in vacuum sterilisation.

technology. These advances in technology arenot yet a requirement of the dental council, but we have decided to be proactive to ensureour patients’ safety,” she said.If you are interested in attending BalbrigganBraces for a free Orthodontic assessment, please call Hazel on 01-6905496. Openinghours are late night Monday from 1pm to 8pmand Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from9.30am until 6pm.

Concerns OverFuture Of LocalPost OfficesPost Offices across the North County, are nowconcerned about their long term future, due to aquestion mark over their continued businessrelationship with the Department of SocialProtection, over the future payments of SocialWelfare allowances. The plan is that these payments will nolonger be made at post offices, but willbe made at banks, or at Tesco, or othersupermarket outlets. There will be a motion in the Dáiltomorrow (Wednesday), calling on theGovernment to implement it’s planfrom the Programme for Government, that they would outline a plan, as tohow they would secure the long termviability of sub-post offices. These areeffectively operated on a franchisebasis, where the sub-post master is a selfemployed person, who delivers services onbehalf of An Post. Local election candidate for the BalbrigganElectoral Area, Cathal Boland (NP), is outraged

at this decision, and he stressed the importanceof the post offices to the local community. Hetold the County Leader, “My concern is that postoffices are the last standing link of communitynetwork. They not only provide vital services interms of delivery of ‘across the counter’services, but they are also, for many people, their only social contact, and their moment toget out and about. If these post offices areclosed, an important element of the social fabricof communities, will disappear. Many busi-nesses are run, in conjunction with the sub-postoffice. If the post office element was removed

from the business model, the localshop, or filling station would no longerbe a viable business.”He continued, “I think it’s beholding ofthe Government to deliver a strategicplan, working with An Post in thedevelopment of additional services, which the post office may be in a posi-tion to provide and that the GrantThornton report should be used as theblueprint for such a plan. There’s abond of confidentiality surrounding

the payment of social welfare allowances, thatexists between the post master and the client, and many customers are concerned that thiswould now cease to exist, if this service is trans-ferred to a supermarket,” he concluded.”

Local Counselling Service AvailableVoluntary service, BASE, are offering those in need ofhelp with depression, anxiety, relationship difficultiesor any life crisis, a support service. This communityservice is available to anyone suffering and can becontacted for an appointment on 087 8902596between 10am and 1pm. If there is no answer, leave amessage and all calls will be returned.

noise you don’t recognise, get it checked out immedi-ately.

Tyres

It cannot be emphasisedenough how crucial it is toensure your tyres are roadsafe for those loomingwet, rain soaked roads. The first aspect of yourtyres you must check istheir thread. The thread ofa tire refers to the rubber, outer layer that makescontact with the road. Asyou use your car the tyrethread will gradually weardown and your tyre willneed to be replaced, sogive yours a once overevery week. Pop down toone of North Countiesmechanics if you areunsure of the indicatorsthat your thread is belowthe legal limit. You should also checkyour tyres air pressureevery other day, whichyou can do at one of NorthCounties local petrolstations. You could evenpurchase a pressuregauge, to test your tyresair pressure yourself fromhome. Again if you arenervous in trying thisyourself for the first time, one of North Countiesexcellent mechanics willbe more than willing toshow you how.

Oil

Motor oil is the fluidkeeping your engine lubri-cated and without it yourcar will not go very far. It’svital you check your car’soil levels regularly andchange motor oil every4000-4500 miles. If yourcar’s oil levels are notcorrect, your engine couldover-heat and cause majorproblems to your engineand your bank account. Ifyou are unsure about howto check and change youroil, contact one of NorthCounties local mechanicsand they will demonstratehow to do so.

Windows

Your car’s windows, although strong areextremely vulnerable tocracks and chips and anyother things that might hitthem in this stormyweather. The smalleststone to hit your wind-screen could make asignificant chip. This chipmay then develop in to afull blown crack, whichwill affect vision whilstdriving. You may not havenoticed if your windscreenhas been chipped, so goover it regularly just tomake sure. If you do find achip, get it assessed andsorted out immediately. One of North Countieslocal windscreen expertswill be able to help youwith this issue.

Last year, a record 1.9 millionpassengers travelled betweenDublin and North America, but thistotal is likely to be eclipsed thisyear, with new routes to SanFrancisco, Toronto and St John’s,Newfoundland. The launch of these new long-haulroutes, coupled with additionalcapacity on existing transatlanticservices, will deliver a 17 per centincrease in Dublin Airport’s NorthAmerican capacity in 2014, as

320,000 additional seats will beavailable. This positive newsregarding extra transatlanticcapacity is further boosted by theconfirmation that US Customs &Border Protection will pre-clear allUS-bound flights from DublinAirport to the United States thisyear. During the peak summermonths this year, 268 flights willoperate each week from Dublinto/from North America, which is anaverage of 38 flights per day. “The

number of North American routesand destinations from DublinAirport is greater than ever thisyear,” a Dublin Airportspokesperson said. “This willprovide fantastic choice and flexi-bility for North American visitorsplanning a vacation in Ireland thisyear and for Irish residents plan-ning holidays in the United Statesor Canada. Aer Lingus will havenew direct services to San Franciscoand Toronto, Air Canada willoperate to Toronto year-round withits new Air Canada rouge leisurecarrier and Canadian airline WestJetwill operate a summer service to StJohn’s Newfoundland.”

Dublin Airport’s TransatlanticTraffic To Increase This Year

High Risk CommunityGroups Urged To GetFlu VaccineThe HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre(HPSC) is urging people in high-risk groups aroundthe North County those aged 65 and over, peopleincluding children with chronic illness, all pregnantwoman, those with a low immune system, healthcare workers and carers of those in risk groups andthe morbidly obese to get vaccinated againstinfluenza, as the number of reported cases ofinfluenza-like illness (ILI) in Ireland has increased inthe last week. ILI rates have risen from 20.5 per100,000 population to 32.4 per 100,000 populationduring the second week of February and are nowabove threshold levels which means that flu isactively circulating in the locality and beyond,

according to HPSC specialist in public health medi-cine, Dr Joan O’Donnell. “It is still not too late for people around the NorthCounty who are at risk of the complications of flu toget vaccinated against the disease if they have notalready done so,” she told the County Leader. “Thevaccine is available free of charge from GPs for allpeople in at risk groups, and from pharmacists foreveryone aged 65 and over. The symptoms ofinfluenza usually develop over a matter of a fewhours and include a high temperature, sore muscles, dry cough, headache and sore throat. This isdifferent from the common cold, which tends tocome on more gradually and usually includes arunny nose and a normal temperature.” “Anyone who gets flu should stay at home, rest, drink plenty of fluids and use over-the-counter reme-dies like paracetamol to ease symptoms. Anyone inone of the high-risk categories should contact theirGP if they develop influenza symptoms,” she added.

New Community ‘Dog Walkers’ SchemeA new community based scheme has been set up across the North County, as a friendly way tochange society’s attitudes about dog fouling. Green Dog Walkers is a non-confrontational scheme, which volunteers in the community can adopt and promote in their area. Volunteers wear a GreenDog Walkers armband, which acts as a friendly reminder to please pick up after your dog. Wearingthe armband signifies that the volunteer has “taken the pledge” to always clean up after their dog, carry extra dog waste bags and are happy to offer one to those without. If you would like to beinvolved with the scheme, all you have to do is contact the County Council’s EnvironmentalAwareness Team.
