LINK TO DELIVERY PROGRAM The relationship with the Delivery Program is as follows: Direction: 2. Our Built Environment Outcome: 2.4 North Sydney's heritage is preserved and valued Direction: 4. Our Social Vitality Outcomes: 4.1 Community is connected 4.4 North Sydney's history is preserved and recognised BACKGROUND North Sydney Council celebrated its 125th Anniversary on Wednesday 29 July 2015. The Council was formed by the amalgamation of the East St Leonards (1860), St Leonards (1868) and Victoria (1871) boroughs. At its meeting of 15 December 2015, Council resolved to support a number of proposed events and projects. These projects have now been successfully implemented and positive feedback documented. CONSULTATION REQUIREMENTS Community engagement is not required. SUSTAINABILITY STATEMENT The sustainability implications are of a minor nature and did not warrant a detailed assessment. DETAIL Officers from different divisions of Council contributed ideas and projects for the 125th anniversary celebrations. The following is a summary of projects and events that were successfully delivered including some positive comments and photos. A one-page collection of photographic highlights was featured in the Spring edition of Council’s community newsletter North Sydney News. Feedback from participants has been included in italics throughout the report to reflect how the events were received by the community.

Free Community Fair Sunday 26 July, 11am - 3pm, St Leonards Park, North Sydney An estimated 7000 people attended the festival. While people of all ages attended, the largest group was families with young children. After a stretch of cold and wet weather, the day was sunny and an unexpectedly balmy 22 degrees. As a result, people arrived early and lingered after the official closing time. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly with people waiting cheerfully to participate in the different activities. Council-organised activities included a circus playground, arts and crafts, face painting, jumping castle, bungee trampoline, rock climbing wall, swinging chairs, Kindifarm, Holtermann’s Hunt (an interactive, clue-based challenge in the style of the Amazing Race) and an interactive community mural, as well as live music, food trucks and a small licensed area. Community groups were also invited to participate. The Cammeray Croquet Club, North Sydney Junior Baseball Club and the North Sydney Community Centre all provided an activity on the day and said there was a high level of interest and support for the activities they ran. “Thank you for inviting the Cammeray Croquet Club to your event. We had a very busy day with a constant stream of children visiting our stall. Absolutely loved the set up with the fencing and the gazebo enclosing our activity. It was perfect. Had a wonderful position in the sun near the rides. Congratulations on a successful day.” “I just wanted to congratulate you and the team for the fabulous Community Fair yesterday at St Leonards Park. We had an absolute ball and the organisation was sensational, especially the Hunt. I know we often complain to Council but I really felt I needed to say congratulations today”. "I attended the North Sydney 125 years festival and I must say my 2 year old LOVED it. It was great for our whole family and the turn out was great." “Congratulations and thank you to the organisers of the Community Festival held yesterday in St Leonards Park. Our grand daughters enjoyed it immensely. They particularly liked the petting zoo and the cupcake decorating. I know how much work goes into these events but as there were a lot of people enjoying it I think it would feel very worthwhile.”

Each column featured images of paintings or photos that told the story of significant moments in the area’s history or showcased North Sydney’s achievements in art, architecture, literature and sport.

“I saw one of the columns in Waverton yesterday and was most impressed. I’m an Oral Historian and produce life story documentaries and former ABC journalist so I’m really thrilled North Sydney Council, my municipality, really values our heritage. Keep up the great work.” 1890 - Pale Ale and Meet the Brewer A limited edition pale ale, called 1890, was brewed by Flat Rock Brew Café at Naremburn and sold on tap at four venues during July. Overall, 20 kegs were brewed and sold: Flat Rock Brew Cafe (5 kegs); Kirribilli Hotel (5 kegs); Oaks Hotel (3 kegs); Rag & Famish (6 kegs) and Community Fair (1 keg). This was a good outcome for all the businesses involved and good relationships were established with the participating businesses. Three Meet the Brewer evenings were held. The opportunities to taste the beer were well received and there was positive feedback on both the quality of the beer and the project itself. This project was a quirky way to connect with a younger demographic that doesn’t necessarily engage with Council and a successful way to promote the 125th anniversary to them. A ‘Premier’ Place: North Sydney in the 1890s North Sydney Heritage Centre, Level 1 Stanton Library, 6 July - 31 December 2015 Mon- Thurs 9am-9pm, Fri 9am -6pm, Sat & Sun 10am-5pm The exhibition, which will continue until 31 December, explores life in North Sydney during the 1890s, when free garbage collection was just being introduced, lighting came from coal gas and ‘nightsoil’ was dumped in Cammeray Park. The exhibition features original costumes, objects, maps, documents, photographs and artwork from our historical and cultural collections. Sense of Place Art Exhibition 7 July to 27 August InTransit Art Space, North Sydney Council Chambers North Sydney Community Centre Stanton Library This exhibition told the story of modern North Sydney through the eyes of selected local artists who live here. There were 40 artworks exhibited in three locations. Council has purchased four of the artworks for the Historical Collection which may be re-displayed at future exhibitions. Feedback from the artists was very positive and there were people visiting the InTransit Art Space and following the art trail each day. “It’s been an absolute treat having my drawings at Stanton Library. I like how they offer library visitors a time to pause and relax. My friends who have visited the library gave me such lovely feedback about their placement. And then, the surprise red dot. This is the exhibition that just keeps on giving. Love it!” At Home in North Sydney: an architectural history of a locality Available from July 2015 through Council’s website Council’s on-line exhibition, At Home in North Sydney, showcases the area’s extraordinarily rich architectural history through plans, maps, photographs, artworks and oral history. This exhibition will remain online for public viewing.

A Ferry Good Time Sunday 2 August 2015 Council’s Historian Ian Hoskins hosted a successful heritage ferry cruise along the North Sydney foreshore. This event sold out within a few weeks of being announced and received much more further interest. “Enjoyable, interesting and well organised event.” “It was very relaxed and well presented. Great experience.” #happymoments125 - Instagram Photo Competition

The Happy Moments competition was named to honour North Sydney photographer Harold Cazneaux who won an Australia-wide Kodak happy moments competition in 1914. To enter, people were required to follow Council on Instagram @NthSyd125, upload a picture of their happy moment in North Sydney, and hashtag #happymoments125 and #NthSyd125. The competition closed on 29 July with the judging taking place on 31 July. Winners received a voucher to a store of their choice - $500 first prize, $250 runner up and $250 under 18 prize (#happymomentsyouth).

Many of the Live Poets regulars dressed up in their best clothing from yesteryear and shared in some classic literature and live music by the Ceilidh Collective. Indigenous Heritage Walks Two Indigenous Heritage Walks were organised with the Aboriginal Heritage Office, however, one had to be cancelled due to wet weather. The 25 July tour was booked out and there was a waiting list. “I attended the walk led by Karen today and am emailing to say, it was a wonderful day. Karen was a great guide. Thank you very much, it was very enjoyable.”
