Forestry announcements 2012 Young Forester Award Young Forester Award invites students and young professionals who are nationals of Commonwealth countries and below the age of 35 years on 30 June 2012. For the 2012 Young Forester Award we particularly encourage applications from foresters from Small Island Developing States, within the Commonwealth. In addition we encourage applications from women, those with disabilities, and nationals of developing countries. A Framework for Integrating Biodiversity Concerns into National REDD+ Programmes The CBD Secretariat has supported open access to an article in the journal ‘Biological Conservation’ entitled ‘A framework for integrating biodiversity concerns into national REDD+ programmes’. Forestry (Distance Learning with International Commonwealth Scholarship) - MSc by Distance Learning The School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography is pleased to offer a postgraduate distance-learning course in Forestry, which is aimed specifically at international students who have been awarded a scholarship by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). Up to 15 scholarships are available for applicants from the following developing commonwealth countries to study for our MSc Forestry by distance learning. Governance for forest, nature and people Growing recognition of civil society concerns and their inclusion in the development agenda of international agreements and conventions such as Agenda 21, CBD, UNFF and others, provided the first experiences in interactive policy in the 1990s. Increasingly, interactive policy approaches such as national forest programmes are also recognised as a way of improving sector governance.
Landscape functions and people Integrated natural resources management approaches which start from a landscape perspective are increasingly being recognised and used to ensure more effective resource planning that links grass-roots and community based initiatives with wider national or regional perspectives. The approach aims to overcome some of the scale limitations of community based NRM and focuses on the integration of practices in an attempt to merge ecosystem thinking with multi-stakeholder processes and good natural resources governance.

New publications from FAO Forest management and climate change: a literature review As part of a FAO-led process to prepare climate change guidelines for forest managers, this publication summarizes the knowledge, challenges and experiences in forest management and climate change impacts, based on a literature review and a survey of forest managers. A number of gaps in enabling conditions (related to knowledge, institutional setting and culture) that hamper forest managers from responding effectively to climate change and its impacts, are identified. Unasylva 238: Measuring forest degradation Unasylva closes the International Year of Forests 2011 with a selection of papers on forest degradation. These were developed as part of a special study FAO and its partners conducted to create a set of indicators on the state of forest degradation. Also featured is a major study that analysed remote sensing imagery to understand forest-cover and land-use change; and a way to use such data to map the myriad opportunities for forest landscape restoration.

forêts, menée par la FAO et ses partenaires. Dans les articles plus courts, sont présentés une étude importante sur l’interprétation des images de télédétection en vue de comprendre l’évolution du couvert forestier et de l’utilisation des terres, et un procédé qui permet d’utiliser ces données pour élaborer une carte des nombreuses opportunités existantes en matière de restauration des paysages forestiers.

In 2 years, forest bhavan to come up in Shivajinagar The Indian Express, 10/03/12 Pune district is all set to have a Forest bhavan at Bhamburda in Shivajinagar in two years. The excavation for the construction has been completed. All offices of the forest department and a library will be housed under this one office. The Bleih Community Forest, which measures over 628 hectares, is a biodiversity hotspot in the northern Nimba landscape and is also rich in other valuable forest resources such as timber and non-timber forest products. Madagascar Silky sifakas fight for survival in Madagascar BBC, 15/03/12 Silky sifakas, which live in the rainforests of Madagascar, are critically endangered, with as few as 300 individuals remaining. Malta Children turn stolen trees incidents into opportunity The Malta independent, 03/03/12 Students who contributed to an afforestation project were very disappointed to see that
about 70 of the trees were stolen on three different occasions earlier this year, but primary school students attending St Clare College in Pembroke have turned the incident into an opportunity by putting forward suggestions related to prevention, better surveillance and law enforcement, as well as more awareness about trees and their benefits.
