Dear reader, Welcome to this new edition of Infosylva. At the SDG Summit in New York, 25-27 September, the United Nations launched the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by 2030. In order to have a chance of success, efforts to eradicate hunger have been strongly correlated in the SDG agenda 2030 with the sustainable management of our planet’s natural resources. (Comment in English. FAO press release in English, Spanish and French) The UN General Assembly in New York on 29 September was the scene of the launch of the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI) by FAO Director General Graziano Da Silva and the representatives of participating countries and other partner organizations. The objective of the initiative is to preserve the value of Central African forests to mitigate climate change, reduce poverty, and contribute to sustainable development. (In English and French. FAO press release in English, Spanish and French) On the occasion of the SDG Summit, CIFOR’s Think Forests Video Award was also presented. The award-winning film is available here. (In English) The recent monsoon floods in Myanmar, which severely affected large parts of the country, have been strongly related by specialists of development organizations to indiscriminate deforestation. (In English) From 23 to 25 September, Guayaquil in Ecuador was transformed into the environmental capital of Latin America. On the path to COP 21 in Paris later this year, more than

1000 environmentally friendly projects, divided into 6 categories, took part in the “Latino America Verde” contest. “WAO”, a project regrouping 300 indigenous women, won the prize for the forests and biodiversity category. (In Spanish) In Estonia, a team of architecture students has installed three giant wooden megaphones in the woods to allow people who happen to be walking there to listen to the sounds of nature. Half of the country’s land is still covered with forests, and people in Estonia have strong cultural bonds with them. The Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel (GGW) Initiative is a program initiated in 2007 that links 20 countries from Africa’s Sahel-Saharan region and aims to address desertification, land degradation and drought in the Sahara and Sahel.

New forestry publications with FAO collaboration The Role of Natural Regeneration in Large-scale Forest and Landscape Restoration: Challenge and Opportunity. Building the foundation for a global natural regeneration partnership From November 19 to 21, 2014, some of the world’s most noted specialists on forest landscape restoration gathered in Rio de Janeiro to assess Natural Regeneration as a cost-effective strategy to achieve large-scale restoration throughout the world. Natural regeneration consists, in its most basic form, of letting remaining portions of the original ecosystem re-colonize a degraded area. A 5-fold cost reduction can be achieved when compared to Restoration Planting; additionally, species colonize from the surrounding area and are adapted to local conditions and to other species (local genotypes).

Miscellaneous Online petition for mountains at UNFCCC COP21 The International Petition on Mountain ecosystems and peoples affected by climate change is meant to be signed by individuals and is aimed at mobilizing peoples from all over the world in support of mountain peoples and ecosystems. United States of America Congress should give the Government more money for wildfires The New York Times 28/09/15 The Forest Service estimates that two-thirds of its annual budget could be dedicated to fire suppression and management by 2025. Scientists are widely agreed that climate change is creating the conditions that are likely to make fires bigger and more intense in years to come. Could forests store more carbon as the climate warms? Grist 28/09/15 As the climate warms, public lands may become more valuable in America’s effort to fight greenhouse gas emissions because climate change may increase the amount of carbon federal public lands in the lower 48 states are able to store by nearly 20 percent by 2050, a new study shows. Huge wildfires will keep driving up a costly tab Idaho Statesman 27/09/15 Most scientists expect the warming trend will continue, meaning longer and more expensive fire seasons. Salvage logging destroys the forest's initial regrowth efforts in nutrient-rich soil and needlessly removes shrubs that are probably beneficial to sapling trees, short-circuiting the natural life cycle of the forest, according to research. Residents worried about damage to Lake Forest's 260-year-old Heritage Tree Chicago Tribune 24/09/15 A swamp white oak tree pictured Thursday, Sept. 24, in Lake Forest known locally as the Heritage Tree. It's 260 years old and a rendering of it is used on the city website and stationery. The tree is located on a 10-acre site proposed for a residential development just north of Laurel Avenue and slightly west of Western Avenue. Some residents are concerned about how construction might impact the tree.

U.S. lawmakers discuss wildfire suppression legislation ABC Fox Montana 24/09/15 The Obama administration has proposed a plan to increase funding for wildfire suppression, but some lawmakers in Washington D.C. believe it won't solve the problem by just adding money to fight fires. Wednesday Republican lawmakers said no amount of increased funding will decrease the occurrence of wildfires, so they want to see a forest management component added to the legislation. World Chopping down trees will haunt East Africa All Africa 20/09/15 Forest cover across some parts of East Africa has been disappearing fast. Not because this is a deliberate move by governments to allow the chopping down of trees, but due to the aggressiveness of illegal loggers who have decimated our forestlands. What is needed is efficiency in the utilization of wood, promotion of private sector activities in natural forest management and forest plantation development as a business. To bridge this gap, interventions have often exclusively targeted women. The downside is that chains are not equitably developed, so often these interventions have indirect – sometimes negative – effects on both men and women.
