CANEGROWERS ROCKY POINT Rocky Point District Cane Growers Organisation Limited ABN: 32 111 827 251 1214 Stapylton Jacobs Well Road WOONGOOLBA QLD 4207 T: 07 55461481 F: 07 55461481 E: [email protected] W: www.canegrowers.com.au To the residents of Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point and surrounding areas: Who we are: CANEGROWERS Rocky Point is the duly incorporated body which represents the cane growers of the Rocky Point region on a local, State and Federal basis, either directly or indirectly through our parent organisation, the Australian CANEGROWERS Organisation in Brisbane. It has been brought to our attention by our members that some of the local community are becoming intolerant of legitimate cane grower farming activities and lodging complaints with the relevant authorities. In order for cane farmers to farm in a sustainable and profitable manner, they must undertake a range of diverse activities. A number of these activities appear to be raising the ire of some members of the community. The practices that are attracting this intolerance appear to be:

The slow movement of cane harvesters on the roads. The movement of tractors and excess dimension (oversize) equipment on road. Ash and smoke from cane firing. Odours from farming activities.

These activities are carried out with all legal obligations having been met. This is to say the machinery is registered and carries the necessary permits and approvals, the drivers are trained and licenced to drive and operate this equipment. The smoke, ash and odours, whilst inconvenient, are necessary legitimate and industry accepted ‘best practice’ farming activities in the circumstances at the time. Firing is done under a permit system approved by the regulatory authorities. We ask only that the community have patience during the harvest season when the bulk of these activities occur. Harvest time is from the start of July to late December. We are aware that most residents are tolerant of our activities and thank you for this tolerance. Farming is a difficult business at any time and for a grower to have to deal with investigations of his activities on an ongoing basis is both time consuming and pointless for all concerned. The local sugar industry has been in operation for well over a hundred years and our farming systems have modernised over this period. We find it unreasonable that the influx of new residents who surround or move into our community due to its quiet “country feel”, then seek to force change upon the farming sector to accommodate their perceived lifestyle. An investigation of the area’s uses and impacts on lifestyle would have been advisable prior to purchase. Cane farmers have over many years modified their activities to avoid inconveniencing the non-farmer members of the community, at times at considerable costs to their businesses. We would prefer to have a harmonious relationship with the surrounding community. Please feel free to contact our local office on 55461481 if you have any queries regarding this information. Signed: DIRECTORS - ROCKY POINT DISTRICT CANE GROWERS ORGANISATION LIMITED

BREEDING FOR PET OWNERS - PART 5 Raising Pups How can I tell if the pups are premature? - (Part 1)Truly premature puppies may be small, thin and have little or no hair. Survival is possible but they require an enormous amount of care and often have to be hand fed since they are unable to suckle. Your veterinarian will show you how to do this. Mothers will often reject premature pups and they can soon die of hypothermia. Excessive heat can be just as harmful, so the temperature of the pup's environment must be carefully controlled. Environmental temperature must be maintained at around 30C and the whelping box must be large enough so that the puppies can move away from the heat source if necessary. The puppies must also be kept in a moist atmosphere if they are being raised away from the mother. The mother usually licks and cleans the puppies frequently. As a result, not only is the environment warm, it is also moist. You can provide a moist environment by placing warm, damp cloths in the box with them. How long will I have to hand raise premature puppies?Once the puppies are stronger and able to suckle, the mother will very often take over herself. It is very important to try and ensure they are fed her "fi rst milk" or colostrum which contains necessary antibodies to help prevent infection in the newborn puppies. If the puppies can suckle, your veterinarian will show you how to hold them on to the mother's teats. If this fails, your veterinarian will advise you on milk replacement formulas and proper puppy bottles.

Over the past month we have had visits from a number of school groups with varying learning capabilities.

Students from the South East Region Gifted Education Program gathered for 2 days of extension learning. Year 5 students, from a variety of schools in the region were challenged to observe different species of marine life and identify adaptations. They also researched the mangrove habitat collecting data on various species and determining the role mangroves play in our local area. From the data the students were able to develop their own management plan for a mangrove habitat. The students delivered some fantastic reports and conclusions considering they were 9 and 10 year olds!Eagleby South Special Needs students have just completed a bike ride from their school to JWEEC. Their teacher, Mr Shane Wilson did a great job organising the event which incorporated students riding through properties and observing the various land uses of the area. It was a huge challenge and great experience for the students, and all made it safe and sound. We have also recently co-ordinated a South –East Queensland Marine Centre Professional Development day. This involved representatives from Marine Parks and Oceanwatch informing staff about new and future directions of the Moreton Bay Marine Park and ocean sus-tainability programs. We have also had visits from Helensvale SHS, Upper Coomera SC and Nerang SHS whom all had great days trawling and getting dirty in the intertidal zone.We have a working bee on Saturday 5 November at 10 am. With assistance from the JWEEC Advisory Council, we have planned some nursery propagation and revegetation of Behm’s Forest for the day. Anyone who would like to be a part of the Advisory Council can contact the centre on 55462317.

Health & Happiness

The last of our Trace Minerals. As defi ciencies are extremely rare Science is researching Ultra Trace Minerals to discover if they are ‘essential’ (the body can’t make enough so

must get required amounts from food) or if the minuscule amounts found in the body are enough to function effectively. I have also included information about the effects on the body of ingested Heavy Metals that contaminate water, soil, & air. Next month we will begin to look at the larger, or Major Minerals - Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Phosphorous, Sulphur, & Chloride.

Ultra Trace Minerals

Function

Boron - Found in plant foods; a good diet supplies enough- Essential for healthy bones; helps efficient absorption of Calcium; beneficial for postmenopausal osteoporosis as ithinders magnesium excretion (good for those using diuretics); beneficial for ischemic heart disease & other cardiovascular disease

Silicon - Found in hard drinking water, plant fibre, brown rice, seafood, capsicum, soybeans, green leafy veg, beets, wholegrains.- Supplements = silicon dioxide; vegetal silica = horsetail herb – bones, nail, arteries, skin, hair- Helps formation & integrity of bone and collagen; needed for Connective Tissue eg tendons, cartilage, blood vessels, lungs, trachea, lymph nodes, nails, skin, hair - Works with Calcium for strong bones = important for Osteoporosis & growth periods- Levels decrease w/age, therefore amounts need to increase for elderly- Toxicity only when inhaled (Silicosis leads to respiratory disease = overproduction of collagen in lungs e.g.miners); long term antacid use leads to kidney stone formation

Arsenic - Body has 14mg of natural content; stored in all tissues, especially hair & nails- is being considered as a treatment for leukemia; can counteract effects of Selenium poisoning & visa versa

Nickel - May be a cofactor for certain enzymesVanadium - Normal growth, bone development, normal reproduction

Cobolt Key mineral in B12 molecule

Toxic Heavy Metals

No proven nutritional value – lead, arsenic, cadmium ess.in some animals

Lead - Found in old lead-based paint, water or pipes that source the water- 5 parts/billion considered safe- Veg grown in contaminated soil; old clay products where soap has washed away glaze; old food tins soldered with lead; inhalation by lead dust or petrol- Effects are gradual, cumulative. Causes mental retardation, behavioural problems, iron deficiency, dental caries, nervous system disorders, delayed physical development, & impaired hearing in children. Other effects are loss of appetite, anaemia, irritability, weakness, high blood pressure, hearing loss, kidney damage, & cardiovascular problems. Some are irreversible.

Mercury - Found in mercurial waste products, fungicides and agricultural products that flow into rivers/ocean and contaminate fish; industrial pollution = emissions, dumping; old style fillings (amalgam)- Chronic poisoning = a metallic taste, loss of appetite, anaemia, kidney damage, irritability, vision problems, tremors, spasticity, mental retardation (children)

Arsenic - In the past was used to treat syphilis & TB; poisoning occurred due to it being tasteless- Today – toxic effects are due to contamination by herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers that lead to diarrhea, garlic odour of breath & sweat, darkening of skin (especially the eyelids), loss of appetite, weakness, liver & kidney failure

Cadmium - Used in industry; contaminates water & soil, ingested by animals then concentrates in Liver and Kidneys (organ meats); also found in cigarette smoke & paint from galvanized pipes- Settles in tissues which leads to kidney & other organ damage; may contribute to hypertension

Radon Radioactive gas occurring naturally in soil. However when trapped in enclosed space this leads to health hazards, especially in the lungs

Aluminium - Utensils not proven to cause toxic effects, however levels found in water & antacids may be have toxic effects- Ongoing research to find link between Aluminium and Alzheimer’s

RIESENWEBER PARK At last Council Offi cers have been persuaded to allow the use of the enclosure behind the Tourist Park at the end of Bay Drive near Adrian Court for leash free dog exercise. This area was being held for overfl ow car parking during peak periods, but an estimate will now be provided for gate access from the parkland and will be used until further funding becomes available for a larger fenced area. The land will also be placed on the regular maintenance program and we'll work together on provision of other facilities that might be necessary. I've written to residents whose homes are close to the park to provide an update on the improvements being undertaken. Offi cers are reviewing the type of ramps to be provided on the slab and details should be available for next month's column. It's important that we get the right outcome

9

for the entire community and ensure the quality of ramps to be used. These improvements will benefi t the continued mixed use of Riesenweber Park. Hopefully the amenities block is in better shape after a failure in water pressure during the last month. Experience has shown that the best outcome for our parks is when there is multiple use by different age groups and with adjacent community facilities, cricket, exercise stations, tennis, bmx and skating plus the open nature and high visibility of the area, we're in good shape at Riesenweber Park. Please continue to contact me if I can assist you with any local government issue or if you have queries or suggestions regarding the area.

BLOOD DONOR MOBILE VAN

"The Australian Red Cross Needs Your Donation."

The van will be at the Jacobs Well Community Centre carpark on Monday 14th November between 9.00am - 4.00pm.

An hour of your time is all that it costs to donate. Your donation to help save 3 lives in the process is priceless.

As a regular donor and with the busiest holiday season fast approaching, I know full well just how priceless blood donations are.

Philippa Swift, Community Relations Offi cer of the Australian Red Cross Service, advises, "One in three of us will need blood in our lifetime yet only one in 30 of us actually give blood. Stocks are low, with only just 2 days' supply of O and A blood types. Australia needed 27,000 donations a week to meet the demand."

I will be at the site from 11.00am - 12.00pm to show my support and proudly wearing my Australian Red Cross Blood Service “25 Donations” pin. I look forward to seeing you there with your

sleeves rolled up ready to donate.

In 1866 Carl Heck,(born 1828 in Blindow, Germany), his wife Johanna and their daughter Anna Louise left Falkenhagen, just north of Berlin, in Germany, and arrived in Queensland on the sailing boat” Beausite”, after being at sea for 5 weeks. They settled at Alberton, and later in 1879 moved to a beautiful property at Rocky Point on Moreton Bay at the mouth of the Logan River. However the area chosen was not big enough and was separated from mainland by marshy tidal mangrove swamps. To enable them to get access to the mainland the Heck men cut mangroves trees and made a corduroy base and the women fi lled it with mud to make a roadway that still exists today.

In Germany, Carl had operated his grist mill making fl our for the local bakery. After moving to Rocky Point he erected a basic sugar mill. In 1886 they moved the mill to its present site. Hard work and determination helped them to survive, building their fi rst homes of slab huts and bark, all the family toiled in the fi elds, helping to make themselves self suffi cient. Transport was little and supplies were taken to and fetched from Brisbane by boats as there were no roads. In 1885 the railway line from Yeerongpilly to Beenleigh opened and roads, and ferries across rivers were constructed.

Carl became a Member of the Shire Council and the Administrator McIllwaith bestowed the Commission of Peace upon him. They had 10 children, only 6 survived. (1. Anna Louise born 26.3.1860 in Germany, married George Dauth. 2. Emile Auguste born Alberton 18.12.66 married Ferdinand Collins from Rocky Point, 3. Auguste Emile born 17.2.1869 at Alberton, married William Albert (Blicker) Huth, 4.Wilhelm Heinrich born 18.10.1871 at Alberton, married Ida Auguste Kriedemann, 5. Ida Mary born 1878 at Alberton, married to Theodore Auguste Gentner, and Heinrich Carl born 1881 at Rocky Point, married Ulricke Louise Jahnkow and went back to Germany.) This was indeed a pioneering family.

The family attended the Bethlehem Lutheran church, (built in 1882). The “new” church was built in 1908. In 1924 church services ceased to be in German. They went to German school on a Saturday, and the Government public Pimpama Island School (which became Woongoolba, opened in 1876).

In 1906, Wilhelm Heinrich Heck, (and his wife Ida) took over the mill. Carl died in 1915 aged 87. Wilhelm and Ida’s family, 3 girls and 3 boys, were all educated at the local Woongoolba Primary School. Olga was the only girl who attended Secondary School at Sommerville House Brisbane. The two boys, George and Frank, attended Brisbane Grammar and Frank went on to The Queensland Technical College where he did a Sugar Chemistry Course, later followed by practical experience at both Babinda and Proserpine Mills. Minnie, the eldest girl looked after the homestead, Edith assisted and was in charge of the family dairy, and Olga the youngest looked after the butchery book-keeping. George and Ernie assisted W.H with the mill engineering. George specialized with the sugar boiling on the pan stage, Ernie looked after the evaporators (triple effects) and Frank ran the offi ce, the Chemistry Department and the Laboratory. Wilhelm enjoyed life, worked very hard, sometimes with his men and sometimes on Community Projects. The Heck Complex was designed by him to be self suffi cient.

1313We believe he built 3 houses on the mill property. The fi rst was on the western side (currently W M Heck property) which burnt down. The second on the eastern side (currently the site of the Company’s Administration offi ce), and the third in 1914, a very large 4 bedroom Homestead “Friedensheim”, which is currently used as the Company’s Board room most of it furnished with original furniture. Each house had facilities for catering for large numbers. This was carried out by the Heck women (Ida and her daughters, Minnie, Edith and Olga). Wilhelm made major improvements to the mill over the time by buying other closed sugar mills ie. Nerang and Benowa (1906) and updating.

W H built a tramline to Norwell in 1924 which was necessary to bring Norwell growers cane to Rocky Point after their local mills closed down. The roads were gravel tracks and the vehicles were horse drawn German wagons that were very slow. He built a blacksmiths shop in Mill Road beside his new house to service the growers’ wagons and their horses. He also built a saw mill at the sugar mill adjunct to the rice mill. This was necessary as most land holders would have needed sawn timber to build houses and farm buildings. This was a fairly busy department. Growers usually felled their own logs and either hauled them to the sawmill themselves or by the Heck employees.

In 1926 he built a butcher-shop and slaughtering facility but he found it necessary to be self suffi cient with beef supplies. He bought and leased land at Beaudesert (10,000 acres, 60 miles from home)

which became a cattle property, (Undullah) supplying meat for his 2 butcher-shops; (Beenleigh and Woongoolba). The slaughter-yard was in School Road. Three delivery trucks, (not refrigerated), plied the district from Ormeau to Mt Cotton with beef supplies. He also made a smoke house to smoke Wurst, a German sausage.

While he was experimenting with many crops and mixed farming, he tried growing rice. He built a rice mill but the crop was not suited and very shortly discontinued. He had the Shell petroleum Agency and Depot and delivered fuel to all the grower clients. He had the local New Insurance Agency and the local agent for ACF and Shirley Fertilizer. Growers would call at the fertilizer shed to collect supplies. Most of the supplies were on credit and monies were taken out of the cane pays at the end of each year.

He purchased land at Beenleigh, (Windaroo) for a dairy which supplied milk and cream for the Kingston Butter Factory. (He also had a dairy for family purposes at Woongoolba. The family made their own butter, soap and candles). He also had the American Willies Knight Vehicle Agency. The Heck family always drove a fairly current Willies motor car. His own car had to be fairly versatile as it was not only used for personal transport but also farm inspections and cattle inspections where today only 4+4 vehicles would be used.

He formed the company W.H.Heck & Sons Pty. Ltd. with his 3 sons (George, Ernie and Frank) in 1931. Both George and Ernie married and worked in the mill for many years; until it was decided to split the family interest with George moving to the Gold Coast and Ernie buying a property adjacent to Undullah and Frank staying on to manage the family business. When Frank married Vera Kleinschmidt, his childhood sweetheart, it was a union of two families Kleinschmidts and Hecks who had been rivals for many years. W H was very community orientated, being a member of the Shire Council, on the committee of the newly formed Ambulance (1919) and the Show Society. His generation was one of development and self suffi ciency.

1414An Apple a day keeps the

doctor away...

† Steve Jobs 1955 – 2011

They say an Apple a day

keeps the doctor away;

unfortunately this was not true for Steve Jobs. As most of us

know by now, the co-founder and former CEO of Apple Inc,

passed away on October 5th, 2011 after a seven year battle

with pancreatic cancer.

I found out about Steve Jobs passing from an IT news article

that gets sent to my email inbox. At fi rst I was thinking

that this is a hoax but then I did some more searching on

the Internet and I also heard on the radio that this was

unfortunately true. I announced to my colleagues that Steve

Jobs had passed away and the reaction I got from some

of my colleagues was “Who’s Steve Jobs?” I was shocked; I

couldn’t believe that anyone, particularly people that are

iPhone users, didn’t know who Steve Jobs was.

For those who are still not familiar with Steve Jobs and

Apple I will add a bit of history about them. Steve Jobs was

an American computer entrepreneur and inventor. He co-

founded Apple with Steve Wozniak and Mike Markkula and

named it after his favorite fruit. In the late 70’s they designed,

developed, and marketed one of the fi rst commercially

successful lines of personal computers, the Apple Series

II. In the early 80’s, Steve Jobs was among the fi rst to see

the commercial potential of Xerox PARC's* mouse-driven

graphical user interface, which led to the creation of the

Macintosh. After losing a power struggle with the board

of directors in 1985, Steve Jobs resigned from Apple and

founded NeXT, a computer platform development company

specializing in the higher-education and business markets.

Apple's subsequent 1996 buyout of NeXT brought Steve Jobs

back to the company he co-founded, and he served as its

CEO from 1997 until August 2011.

Steve Jobs was the genius behind the Apple devices we

know and love, the iMac, the MacBook, the iPad and of

course the iPhone. Apple has created a webpage that is

entirly dedicated to the memory of him. When you visit

the Apple website the fi rst thing you see is a big picture of

him and the years of his life. I think Apple has described

Steve Jobs best when they wrote, and I quote “Apple has

lost a visionary and a creative genius and the world has

lost a wonderful human being” I totally agree with this and

regret not having had the chance to meet him in person. His

innovations, his creative genius, his talent and most of all his

vision will live on not only at Apple Inc but with everyone

that knew him and used his fantastic products. I for one will

never forget Steve Jobs.

As you can imagine tributes have been fl ying in from people

like Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, Mark Zuckerberg,

founder of Facebook and even Barrack Obama who said

“Steve was among the greatest of American innovators —

brave enough to think diff erently, bold enough to believe he

could change the world, and talented enough to do it.” Well

said Mr. Obama.

On the announcement of Steve Jobs passing tributes fl ooded

Twitter at 10,000 Tweets every second. This huge public

outpouring eclipsed all other previous events.

Clearly, Steve Jobs has captured the public imagination.

Steve Jobs, you are my hero – Rest in Peace

Michael Tiemann

Following the multi-million dollar sales success of its Gainsborough Greens development at Pimpama and to ensure buyers can take advantage of the Queensland Government’s $10,000 Builders Boost Grant, Mirvac released

sister development, Green Park recently. The strategy has proved successful with strong interest in the new Green Park development and a number of lots now under contract. Green Park is set to be another outstanding example of Mirvac’s award winning residential communities and is located adjacent to the golf course development, Gainsborough Greens, which it launched in 2009.The initial sales release for the $400 million Green Park development was not due until December. The early land release provides

to purchase their preferred lots.Green Park will comprise 1200 homesites with more than 62 percent of the 263 hectare development dedicated to lush parkland, conservation areas, sporting and recreational facilities. Land options include smart, lifestyle

a variety of buyers from families with children, couples and singles, with lots ranging in size from 386sqm to 806sqm. The individual residential lots will accommodate everything from a contemporary home with minimal maintenance through to a single or double storey large home with a big backyard and room for a swimming pool.

Mirvac Queensland CEO Matthew Wallace says solid enquiry levels for Green Park in recent months had prompted the early release.“Based on the current interest and to ensure potential buyers can make the most of the $10,000 government grant before it ends in January 2012, the sales release was brought forward to October 8 with purchasers able to buy off-the-plan and settle from December 2011.“Green Park will become a signature community alongside Gainsborough Greens, offering modern, diverse housing choices, with a large amount of dedicated ‘green space’ from

conservation areas that residents will be proud to call home.“It will connect to the greater neighbouring communities, particularly Gainsborough Greens, with its bush setting and 18 hole golf course and offers a lifestyle solution for growing families who may not wish to live in a body corporate environment,” said Mr Wallace.“The Greenway walking and cycling paths that will interconnect into the greater masterplanned development means that Green Park is one of those rare gems within a newly developing area.“Green Park is set to provide smart land and housing choices that will suit the ever-evolving needs of the northern Gold Coast communities.”For further information on Green Park, phone the Gainsborough Greens Sales Centre, at 299 Yawalpah Road, Pimpama on 07 5549 2322.

I look at clouds from both sides now...Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” single appeared on her “Clouds” album in 1969.They say that if you remember the 60’s then you weren’t really there! True enough, I guess, at least in my case. Still, I do recall the lyrics of her song being amongst the most profound from that era. Simply type ‘lyrics both sides now’ into your Internet browser and see if you agree.

What does a song about clouds have to do with information technology? Cloud Computing - of course! The term maybe relatively new, but the concept has been around for a while.

Scott McNealy, another Silicon Valley wunderkid and co-founder of Sun Microsystems, is often credited with coining the phrase, “The network IS the computer”, way back in 1984. The man was my hero, not just for his brutally honest commentary, but also for Sun Microsystems powerful computers running UNIX, NOT Microsoft Windows. He once called Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, a “convicted monopolist”! Another of his controversial quotes was about consumer privacy: “You have no privacy anyway. Get over it!” Controversial alright, more than a little relevant to the concept of Cloud Computing and a lot closer to the truth than our politicians will have us believe.

So what is Cloud Computing?

The ‘Cloud’ represents a true shift in the way we will access, assimilate and work with information. In a way, it will make the traditional personal computer and notebook obsolete! Even devices like the Apple iPad, all the rage at the moment, will become just another commodity used to consume the services provided by the Cloud. In a nutshell, computing as a ‘product’ in the traditional sense will be replaced by ‘services’ provided by the Cloud. No more purchasing (or pirating) and installing of software on your computer. No more utilities to help ‘tune’ your computer to run faster, no need to backup your precious fi les, no need for virus/malware protection (maybe). In fact, any device capable of displaying content, connecting to the Internet and running a web browser (like Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc) will allow you to access your personal content in the Cloud. That includes the entertainment unit in your living room, the Internet enabled fridge in your kitchen, in-car/in-fl ight displays, smart phones, the kid’s educational (school) tablets - you name it.You will most likely pay “by usage”, rather than by program. What the actual billing model will turn out to be is not yet clear, but one thing is certain: No need to buy a dedicated computer, buy software, pay someone to install it for you, fi x it for you, re-install it for you...The Cloud then is a vast network of computers, storage devices, servers, communication hubs and all manner of software; all owned, controlled and offered as services by ‘Cloud Services Providers’ via the Internet. In a sense, the Cloud is the Internet and the Internet is the Cloud.2 Remember Scott McNealy’s 1984 statement: “The network IS the computer”?The man was a visionary alright! What about his controversial comment regarding privacy? I’ll try to explore that important topic in next month article. Disgracefoold

1717 QUEENSLAND BLOOD STOCKS LOW JACOBS WELL LIFESAVERS NEEDED

A spike in demand has left Queensland with just two days’ supply of O and A blood types prompting a call for people to roll up their sleeves and give blood.

Amongst the most needed blood types is O Negative which can be used universally in an emergency situation.

Philippa Swift, Community Relations Offi cer of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service urged people to give blood now to help save lives.

“One in three of us will need blood in our lifetime yet only one in 30 of us actually gives blood,” Ms Swift said.

“We are urging those in the Jacob’s Well and surrounding areas to spare an hour when the blood van visits their town for the fi rst time in November, and save three lives in the process.

“We know the people of Jacob’s Well are tremendously community-minded. That’s why we chose this beautiful village as a venue for our donor van.

All locals are being urged to roll up their sleeves and give blood, knowing that every donation will help save three lives”

“The lives of cancer patients, road trauma victims, unborn babies and people undergoing dialysis all rely on receiving donated blood and blood products.Ms Swift said Australia needed 27,000 donations a week to meet demand.

Giving blood only takes an hour of your time and is one of the easiest ways to give back to the community.

A Donormobile will be at Jacob’s Well Community Centre carpark on the changed NEW date of Monday November 14th, open 9am – 4pm. State Member for Coomera, Michael Crandon MP will be there at 11am on the day to congratulate local donors.

To donate, or if you have any questions about donating, contact Philippa at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service today on (07) 3804 8009 or visit www.donateblood.com.au

The students of Woongoolba State School have been designing and decorating their school as

part of Woongoolba’s ‘We are leaders’ initiative.

The school uses ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Stephen R. Covey to link the school philosophy and vision with all programs and activities.

Students recently participated in a competition to design artwork to be featured in the school on the theme ‘Putting First Things First’.

In this ‘habit’ students learn to set goals, plan and prioritise.

The competition winners were Connor Pryce, Molly Nunn, Zara Moratti, Harrison Smith, Sheridan Grech and Lucy Elferink.Symbols, illustrations and quotes have started to appear all over Woongoolba School to represent the students, their learning and their commitment to being great leaders, working together in a great school.

A group of Griffi th University education students is spreading the literacy message by donating

books to Indigenous communities in remote areas. As part of their Indigenous Studies course, the third-year students decided to turn their learning into community-based action by organising their own “Share-a-book Project”. They are asking for donations of good quality second-hand or new children’s and early teens books to distribute to children in remote communities. Group spokesperson Christine Reid said they wanted to help reduce the literacy disparity between Indigenous children in remote communities and non-Indigenous children in more urban areas. They are endeavouring to make a real impact on these children’s lives so they can develop a love of reading and be immersed in the written word. They have about 300 books so far but are hoping to have about two to three thousand by the end of October. If people don’t have books to give but still want to contribute, they can make a gold coin donation so books can be purchased on their behalf. People are encouraged to make their gift personal by fi lling out a book label that can be provided to them. These will be placed inside the books to let the reader know who gave it, and to show that someone outside of their community cares enough to share the joy of reading.

The students plan to take the books to the remote communities themselves at the end of the semester.

If you would like to contribute, or to follow their progress, please visit, http://shareabookproject.blogspot.com/1.

People can donate books by dropping them off at the Gold Coast campus in a locked drop-box on level 2 in G30, or by emailing: [email protected] to arrange collection.

I am pleasantly surprised at how much our local

city council recycles at the local tip!! There is facility there for the recycling of scrap metal, garden waste, cardboard and paper, glass bottles and jars, disposable batteries (on the lid it says alkaline batteries, 9v, remote control, single use toy and watch batteries), car batteries, gas bottles, rechargeable batteries. Motor oil, Aluminium and steel cans and rigid plastic containers.

So without a great deal of effort we can be reducing landfi ll signifi cantly, join the growing trend in a necessary direction. If anyone is recycling anything locally and is happy for people to drop these items in please contact me and I shall publish it in the next Sweet Sea News

By rotating crops, the pest or disease is deprived of its favourite host and serious infestations are avoided. As well different vegies have different nutrient require-ments. Where possible green manure is sown after harvesting (autumn) and dug in winter to replenish nutrients and condition the soil. Sheep manure and compost are added when required.

The 2011 Harrigans Rod and Custom Show has been hailed as the best car show in South East Queensland bar none. This, the fourth show staged at Calypso Bay presented by Harrigans Drift Inn, Guthrie Racing and the Queensland Chevrolet Car Club Inc. was the most successful yet. Thousands of people streamed through the gates to see the spectacular gleaming rods and street machines which lined not only the waterfront but the car parks too - worthy of a show in its own right. The weather gods really smiled on us, the show went ahead as was planned - a great sunny day. From the moment you entered the grounds, you were greeted with street machines and hot rods, as far as the eye could see. At the entry of the pub, the orange and white 1938 Chev Coupe of Peter Guthrie welcoming car fans inside. Prize money and giveaways increased

again this year to over $6000. Proceeds from the day went towards the on-going care of a special person, 25 year old Sam Goddard who featured recently on ABC’s Australian Story and 60 Minutes. We were lucky enough to have Sam visit the show on Sunday with his Dad, John, and his carers. The big $1000 prize donated by Altra9 Rear Ends was won twice by the Guthries, who, in turn, turned it down both times for it to be drawn again, it was then decided to auction it upon completion of the trophy awards. Mark Anthony, a dedicated Chev Club member was the successful auction winner after spirited bidding by members of the Gold Coast Muscle Car Association. Mark decided to donate his auction bid money towards Sam‘s ongoing treatment. Well done to Mark and Rosslyn and The GuthriesA mini kids play zone was also set up in front of the tavern to cater for the younger ones with a ball game, swimming pool and rides ensuring all tastes were catered for. A fantastic day was had by one and all – now for the preparation of 2012!!
