New Mexico Senior Olympics, Inc. offers a variety of health promotion activities during the year. If you are 50+, we invite you to pick up that sport racquet, brush up on your playing skills, or lace the tennis shoes and join Senior Olympics in 2015. Senior Olympics offers 26+ individual sports and all athletes compete locally in order to qualify for the Annual State Summer Games. Many sporting events are divided in 5 year age divisions. Playing rules are available online or through your local game coordinator in your area.New this year is “Seniors Got Talent” a production of 50+entertainment. Auditions are required. Plan to check this out at the Games, Saturday, June 6th and you will be amazed at the New Mexico Senior talent. Athletes Welcome -On behalf of the Local Planning Committee and the City of Roswell, I would like to offer you a very warm welcome to our city. We are proud to host the New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games this year. In a collaborative effort between the City of Roswell, the Parks and Recreation De-partment, the Convention Center, the Roswell Adult and Senior Center, the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI), Eastern New Mexico Universi-ty-Roswell, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), and numerous other organizations and businesses, we will provide the senior athletes and guests from around the state unprecedented hospitality. We will build on the successes of the past that make this year’s games truly memorable. The City of Roswell and all of the volunteers are ready to support New Mexico Senior Olympics in any endeavor necessary to make athletes feel at home in our community and to help with the run-ning of 26+ sporting events. HOW TO QUALIFY In order to compete at the 2015 Senior Olym-pics State Summer Games (June 3 - 6) an athlete must first compete in the sport/event at a sanc-tioned local game site. For a complete list of Local Games, see page 23 of this booklet. Athletes may qualify at any of the 29 local game sites through-out the state as long as the athlete also competes in one event at the local game site where he/she re-sides. Local Game Sites submit local game results for athlete verification and eligibility. For all sport and general rules visit our website at www.nmseniorolympics.org.

HOW TO REGISTER Three ways to register for the Summer Games: Individuals may register online, by mail or through a local game coordinator. The registration form will require all pertinent information to include shirt size, housing and meal information, event fees, event entry data, partner information, waiver, emergency contact. Athletes can register for a maximum of 5 Sports with unlimited number of events in each Sport. Registration booklets are mailed to individual athletes who attended in the previous years. Call NMSO to request additional forms if needed for a new athlete. A confirmation letter will be mailed to each athlete prior to the Games. ALL athletes registered for the Games receive a customized game t-shirt; welcome bag; game credentials for admittance to the Opening Ceremony, Athlete Social and Saturday Evening Entertainment; and newsletters as post game item. Guest(s) planning to attend the Games who wish to have the same game perks as an athlete must register by May 1st for a guest pass for fifteen dollars ($15.00). A guest pass is not required to be a spectator at the games. Guest passes will not be sold onsite.

Each person attending the Games requesting dormitory housing and/or meals must indicate so on registration form. Payments accepted include check, money order, cashier’s check or debit/credit card. Cash by mail is not accepted.

ONLINE – Beginning March 1st, go to www.nmseniorolympics.org to register online. Click on the link for online registration. Enter your National Senior Game (NSGA) account/registration number or enter your email address you used to register for qualifying games followed by your password. If you do not remember your password, click on “forgot password” and a password reset link will be emailed to you. If you have never registered online, click on the “New To Games” button to create an account. Please do not create a new account if you already have one. If in doubt, call NMSO and we can verify with you. You will need a debit/credit card to register online. (See page 12 for more instructions.)

MAIL – Complete the registration form with all required information. Payment must accompany registration form sent by mail. NMSO cannot be responsible for lost or misdirected mail.

LOCAL COORDINATOR – A supply of registration booklets has been mailed to each Local game site to assist athletes as needed. All game sites can provide assistance with the registration process as needed. Some local sites will compile registrations to submit as a “group” for combining payment information. Athletes are encouraged to confirm receipt of registration form from NMSO two weeks prior to the Games referencing the group mailing method. Local Game Sites are not responsible for lost or misdirected mail.

REGISTRATION FEES AND DEADLINES

For all registered athletes to receive an event confirmation prior to arriving at the Games NMSO must receive your registration entry form prior to the deadlines. Three deadlines are available to en-courage early submissions and you save money! • Early Bird Registration: March 1 - March 31 – $45.00 fee • Standard Registration: April 1 - April 15 – $60.00 fee • Late Registration: April 16 - May 1 – $75.00 fee

Local Game Results are due to NMSO on April 15th in order to confirm eligibility and verification of each athlete. Athletes can make event changes/cancellations or request game refunds until May 15th. Game refund requests must be sent in writing to NMSO. In the event an emergency prohibits an athlete from attending the Games, refund requests will be honored until June 15th. For any exceptions please request in writing to NMSO through June 15th.

CHECK-IN Registered participants are strongly encour-aged to come by Athlete check-in at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center, 912 N. Main St. prior to scheduled competition and pick up game credentials, welcome bag, game shirt, parking permit, and sport event information. Participants checking in must present a photo identification with date of birth. See hours for check-in. While at check-in visit the Sport Tables for any last min-ute changes or corrections to your events. Ath-letes wishing to have game credentials picked up, must send a request in writing 10 days prior to first day of Games.

Smoking and alcohol on NMMI Campus is not allowed. Smoking at ENMU-R and Roswell Civic Center will only be allowed in designated areas. Please respect those who do not smoke.

PARKING All sport venues and facilities will have adequate special event parking and no special permit will be required except for the NMMI Campus. A free EVENT PARKING PERMIT for NMMI will be available at athlete check-in for anyone interested. Please inquire at the Athlete Check-In for specific details.

REFUNDS All refund, cancellation and change requests must be made by May 15th and are subject to a $10.00 processing fee. These may include: • Individual events and/or partner change • Housing and Meal options • Game Registration All refund, cancellation and change request due to an Emergency can be made by June 15th and are subject to a $10.00 processing fee. All requests must be in writing and submitted to NMSO Game Headquarters in Roswell. NMSO reserves the right to deny any refund request or may make exceptions to deadline based on special circumstances. To request an exception to deadline, (extenuating circumstances) athlete must submit a Refund Request Form with reason for request in writing within 5 days after the Games are over. Applicable refunds will be issued following the Games. Phone calls will not be accepted as official cancellation requests. It is the responsibility of the athlete to ensure that NMSO has received individual requests.

AGE FOR COMPETITION Participants will register according to their age as of December 31, 2015. Age categories for both men and women are 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79; 80-84; 85-89; 90-94; 95+; and 100+ with the exception of Bowling Teams and Dance. Dance has two age categories, 50-69 and 70+. Bowling Teams age divisions are 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+, 80+, 85+, 90+. Age categories for doubles and teams will be determined by the youngest player as of December 31, 2015.

PARTNERS A partner’s name must be indicated on the registration form to be processed – no partners will be assigned by NMSO. You may only participate with one doubles and one mixed doubles partner per event. New for 2015 - Playing rules now allow partner changes to be made at the Games for specific sports. Partner changes may be made on site for doubles and mixed doubles for Badminton, Bowling, Shuffleboard, Pickleball, Racquetball, Table Tennis and Tennis. All partners must have qualified for the sport in which they plan to participate in. The age of the youngest partner will determine the age category for the event. Athletes are responsible to check with individual sport coordinator in advance on site for partner change requests. Partner changes will be verified by the Game Registration team.

SPORT RULES AND DESCRIPTIONS

All sport playing rules are available on the NMSO website. It is the responsibility of each registered athlete to be familiar with all playing rules in advance of the competition. A copy of the sport rules can be requested at athlete check-in. Athletes can register for a maximum of 5 Sports with unlimited number of Events in each Sport. NMSO may place a cap on the total number of entries for the following Sports: Bowling, Pickleball and Shuffleboard due to the growing numbers in these Sports.

Please check Sport Tables and Schedule of Events for times for your age division (if applicable). An exhibition match will be required to qualify for medals, and must be played against a registered athlete, even if there is no competition in an age group. All Sports Descriptions can be found on our website at www.nmseniorolympics.org. New Mexico Senior Olympics Board of Directors recently adopted a few rule changes, see list below. Athletes may qualify at any of the twenty nine (29) sanctioned local game sites throughout New Mexico with the stipulation that an athlete must also qualify in a minimum of one event at the game site in the county he/she resides in. Athletes do not have to earn a specific place in local games in order to compete at the state level. All athletes competing regardless of local placement are eligible to register for state games.

2015 Rule Changes in Brief • AIR GUN – All competitors shall use the

shooting table provided by NMSO • AIR GUN – Language has been adopted to

clarify Clear Bore Indicator and Cease Fire • CYCLING - Recumbent bicycles will no longer

be allowed. • DANCE - Couples will be Mixed Doubles. • GOLF – Nine Hole gross scores are permitted

for those 90 and older. • RACE WALK – Athletes qualified in either the

1500 meter or 5K may compete in both • SOFTBALL DISTANCE THROW – An ASA

approved 11 inch softball for women will be provided and must be used

• TALENT SHOW – Talent has been deleted from our menu of events and will now be a “Seniors Got Talent” Premiere Production

• NON-AMBULATORY SPORTS - 3 sports will now be open to Non-Ambulatory athletes. They are Bowling, Horseshoes and Shuffleboard. See Rules on our website.

SPORTS COORDINATORS Coordinators are volunteers who are committed to sports for active adults, and have been enlisted to run the various sport tournaments during the 37th Annual Senior Olympics Summer Games. A complete list of sports coordinators will be available on the NMSO website. Athletes are encouraged to contact individual sport coordinators after May 15th for specific tournament information.

PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE A professional is someone who competes in a sport for money as a primary source of personal revenue. Individuals whose primary activity is teaching a sport but who occasionally play for a minor amount of money are not deemed professionals. Professional athletes shall not be eligible to compete in Senior Olympics Summer Games in the sport in which they are a professional until 20 years after the date they last competed as a professional. They may compete in other sports in which they have not competed professionally.

PROTEST POLICY AND PROCESS • In the event an athlete presents a game results

inquiry to the Sport Coordinator, it will be the responsibility of the athlete to resolve any inquiry prior to the conclusion of the event.

• Any person wishing to register an official protest on behalf of a registered athlete must obtain the applicable form from Game Headquarters.

• A written protest must be filed with Game Management within twenty four (24) hours from the conclusion of the Sport.

• Game Management will rule on protests based on circumstances.

• Game Management will review the written protest details with applicable Sport Coordinator and game personnel as warranted and in a timely manner.

• Game Management rulings are final and not subject to further appeal. Athlete/author will be notified of final rulings.

AWARDS Winners are presented Olympic style medallions for first, second, and third place finishers. Ribbons are presented for fourth and fifth as is appropriate to the sport. Awards which are not claimed at the event, may be picked up at Game Headquarters or mailed to Local Game Coordinators following the Games.

GAME RESULTS Sports Coordinators provide game results to Game Headquarters at the conclusion of the sporting event. The Game Results are posted at the Roswell Civic Center lobby area during the games, on the NMSO website and local newspaper. Following the Games all game results are reviewed and verified by the NMSO Registration team for accuracy. Game results will be confirmed and ratified by the NMSO Board of Directors to be official. Athletes wishing to purchase a game result booklet may do so at the Souvenir Store at athlete check in area. Results booklets include state game records

INCLEMENT WEATHER Senior Olympic events will be conducted rain or shine, unless it is unsafe to do so. Call your Sports Coordinator for updates. There will be no refunds for cancellations which are due to inclement weather.

NATIONALS NMSO and Local Game Sites are member organizations of the National Senior Games Association. NSGA conducts the National Senior Games – the Senior Olympics biennial during the odd number years. The 2015 National Senior Games will be held July 3 – July 16, 2015 in Minneapolis. More information is available at www.nsga.com. 2016 Summer Games will be the next qualifying year for Nationals.

SOCIAL EVENTS Senior Olympics have several special social events at the Summer Games where athletes can renew camaraderie with their peers. Social Events include Opening Ceremony, Athlete Social, Sports Heath Fair, Sports Dinner Banquet, Seniors Got Talent Production, “Saturday evening musical entertainment” – Al Nelson an all-around enter-tainer spanning 50’s through the 70’s, with danc-ing incorporated. See event descriptions below. Sports Dinner Banquet is a ticketed event, all oth-er events only require game credentials.OPENING CEREMONY - A “celebration” for

athletes, Wednesday, June 3rd at 7:00 pm. at the New Mexico Military Institute Campus, Alumni Plaza location. NMSO will recognize athletes, Golden Athletes, Courage Award, Torch Run Relay and an athlete drawing from the Inn of the Mountain Gods, must be present to win. This event is high energy and lots of fun!

ATHLETE SOCIAL - Following the Opening Ceremony athletes can dance, eat and enjoy refreshments on the outdoor patio at the NMMI Campus. Event is free to athletes and guests with game credentials.

SPORTS HEALTH FAIR - An informational opportunity to visit with exhibitors for health information, health screening and free giveaways. Health Fair is held on Friday, June 5th from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Roswell Civic Center. A free Senior Athlete Fitness Exam (S.A.F.E.) screening will be offered to registered athletes at the Health Fair. This screening is intended to increase your health and help with injury prevention as you continue to remain active.

SPORTS DINNER BANQUET – Saturday, June 6th at 6:00 pm. at the Roswell Civic Center where NMSO will honor “Spirit Athletes”, one per game site, for their local contributions to Senior Olympics. Each local game site will provide athlete nomination information to NMSO prior to deadline. Honorees are special guests and will receive one (1) complimentary dinner ticket to attend. All other guests must purchase a ticket in advance. Deadline to purchase dinner banquet ticket is Thursday June 4th at 5:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased for $24.00 per person on the game registration form or at the Souvenir Store.

“SENIORS GOT TALENT” is new for 2015 and is a talent show production to showcase New Mexico’s finest entertainers 50+ that have auditioned to perform. Plan to attend - free to athletes and guests with game credentials. “Seniors Got Talent” will take place Saturday, June 6th at the Pueblo Auditorium located at 300 N. Kentucky Ave., Roswell, NM.

SATURDAY EVENING ENTERTAINMENT - Free to registered athletes and guests with game credentials. AL NELSON preforms his tribute to hits of the Past - spanning the 50’s through the 70’s. He incorporates audience participation, comedy and high energy choreography. Al Nelson opened for The Platters, 5th Dimension, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Earth Wind and Fire. He is an all-around entertainer who will leave you wanting more! The Al Nelson Entertainment will take place at the Roswell Civic Center following the Sports Dinner Banquet. HOUSING AND MEALS Apartment/Suite style type housing is available at the local community college, Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, Sierra Vista Village at very affordable rates for all individuals attending the Games. ENMU-R is located 7 miles south of Civic Center. Request apartment/suite style housing on the Game registration form to include roommate request or NMSO will assign. Two types of rooms are available which include suite style and apartment style. Both types of rooms are limited and all requests will be received on a first come, first serve basis. Deadline to request housing accommodations is May 1st or when all rooms are filled. Payment for housing must accompany game registration form. All suites and apartments have separate sleeping rooms each with one college twin bed. Athletes must provide their own linens, towels, pillows and other toiletries. Meals on the ENMU-R campus are available at the Campus Union Building on a cash basis only. Housing does not include any meals. MEALS The New Mexico Military Institute dining services will offer a 3 meals per day plan for athletes, see registration form. Each 3 meals per day plan starts with Lunch on day of arrival and ends with breakfast on the day of departure. All Meal Plans are to be requested on the game registration form. There is no housing available on the NMMI campus only meals.

HOTELS Selected Roswell area hotels have indicated a limited block of rooms available at a special game rate. It is suggested to call early and indicate the Senior Olympics rate when making your reservation. A limited number of rooms are available at each hotel. NMSO is not responsible for hotel reservations.

VOLUNTEER SIGN UP FORMThe 2015 Senior Olympics Summer Games is recruiting volunteers for the Games in Roswell. Over 400 volunteers are needed in support of the sporting events during pre-game and/or Game Week. Volunteers who sign up to work a four-hour shift minimum will receive a free t-shirt, certificate, and an invitation to attend a volunteer kick-off event. Sport Coordinators will confirm all volunteers specific assignments and provide training in advance. In the event you are not notified, please feel free to contact NMSO.

Deadline to sign up is May 1, 2015. Volunteers must be 16 years or older.
