LETTER FROM THE BOARD

The official “season” may be fast approaching this year’s end but there is still lots of activity taking

place here at Laguna de la Paz. Phase One of the painting project continues, and with kudos to

MC Paining for staying right on schedule despite the unusually rainy weather that plagued them in

the early weeks. The second phase of roofing (tile roofs on Calle Seranas being replaced, plus four

on Via Hermosa) will begin shortly. Then there is all of the ongoing maintenance activity, and

more!

Homeowners should also welcome the re-establishment of a Safety Committee, co-chaired by

Mary Bryant and John Hamill. An update on their work is later in this newsletter but if on

premises please plan to attend a presentation by Veronica Verde of FEMA happening on APRIL

11th at 3:00 p.m. in the clubhouse. She will be providing a wealth of information related to

preparing your home for an earthquake, as well as how FEMA and other government agencies

offer assistance. It’s a “not to be missed” event! For those unable to be present a summary of the

key points will also be presented in the next newsletter.

Another topic of major concern is what’s happening to the vacant parcel next to our property.

The new owners are reportedly working on a plan for a senor living facility, consisting of single

level dwellings and a two-story Assisted Living facility to be built near St. Francis church. Very

preliminary plans have been submitted to the city of La Quinta and the Strategic Planning

Committee, led by Dawn Billings, is in close contact with city officials. Residents will have ample

opportunity to be heard on this issue so stand by for further information.

It should also be noted that among the actions taken by the Board at the recent meeting was the

decision to remove the broken monument (due to an auto accident) at the corner of Washington

and Eisenhower. Work will now take place to determine what type of monument/signage can

instead be installed near to the corner of Eisenhower and Washington. This, too, is part of an

effort getting underway by the new Marketing & Communications committee to define the LDLP

brand. More information about this initiative will be shared in the fall.

Prior to the most recent board meeting there were two joint committee chair committees

organized by Greg Asbra. These meetings included one between the chairs and community

management with the goal of simplifying and speeding up communications. The result is several

new processes will be put in place to help facilitate fulfillment of requests among other benefits.

Thanks to all those who attended for their time and great ideas.

As our “snowbirds” leave it is time to once again thank the many who make major contributions

to this community, and especially to those who remain involved with Board and committee

commitments throughout the summer months.

At the same time, LDLP’s percentage of those who call here their “permanent address” continues

to rise so look for more camaraderie and events continuing through the summer months!

THE LDLP BOARD OF DIRECTORS

LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE UPDATES

Spring has sprung here at LDLP! In the last couple of weeks Sunshine has fertilized and weed

controlled the lawns and seeded for the summer grasses. There has also been additional watering

of the lawns due to the fact that after fertilizing the lawns would burn if they did not receive

additional water. Also the weather is now getting warmer and since the summer seeding was just

done this new seed also needs additional water to get established. The lawns are greening up

nicely.

For all the dog walkers and those that like to just walk the lake please note that the watering times

are now as follows: before 7:00 a.m., between 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

and then after 9:00 p.m. As the temperature rises those times will be adjusted but probably not for

another month or two.

The irrigation team is still working on fine-tuning the sprinklers and is making daily and weekly

changes. Please be patient as they are going to every residential area and checking every home as

well as the green belts. However, if there is an immediate problem or concern, please contact the

office.

Finally a number of proposals from Sunshine for replacement of plants have recently been

approved and planting will soon be taking place.

Have a terrific summer!

SAFETY COMMITTEE LAUNCH

LDLP’s new, revised Safety Committee is coming together. The first official meeting will be held

on April 2, 2019 at 10:00 am in Mary Bryant's home at 48252 Vista de Nopal. The topic will be

the Earthquake Preparedness effort to inform all our residents how to prepare and what the

community is doing to be ready as well. Mary is asking all interested residents to attend even if

they have not previously spoken with her about being on the committee or heard from to please

come. There will be goodies for all.

On April 11, 2019 at 3:00 pm in the clubhouse, there will be a guest speaker from the FEMA

office in Pasadena. Veronica Verde is the Regional Director and will provide detailed information

about what each resident needs to do to prepare, how an HOA should respond and how, and

when FEMA will be on the scene in the advent of such a disaster. If you’ve ever had any questions

about FEMA, here is your chance to ask. Please come and be better informed.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE STILL HARD AT WORK

Special thanks to Bill and Linda Baughman and their crew of volunteers who helped create such a

special event for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Party. Their crew of volunteers included Carol Lynn

Lockard, Dan Molitor, Dave Nichols, Greg Asbra, Jeane Stewart, Joyce Labrecque, Kevin Cutler,

Margie Horgan, Mike Crist, Paul Labrecque, Paula Asbra, Sandi LePenske, Suzanne Vleck, Terri

McMillan, and Terry Molitor. Food was delicious and beverages were plentiful!

Next up was the Ladies’ Tea held on March 29th. Suzanne Vleck created a stunning setting as well

as supplying scrumptious treats. It is hoped that even more ladies will be able to attend such a

unique event in the future! In the meantime, a BIG thank you goes out to Suzanne as well as to

Paula Asbra and Terry Molitor who handled the decorations and to the additional helpers.

STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE CONTINUES ON TRACK

The Strategic Planning Committee is working to incorporate the actions of each of the LDLP

standing and ad hoc committees that they indicated will be undertaken over the next three years to

meet the Objectives of the 2019-21 Strategic Plan. The Strategic Planning Committee hopes to

submit the plan to the Board at the May board meeting. The committee welcomes John Tribbett

as its newest member.

The SPC will be working over the next few months to begin review and potential updating of the

Rules & Regulations and to make recommendations on changes that may be in order in the

CC&Rs. The committee is likewise taking the lead in monitoring the situation with the vacant lot

adjacent to LDLP and will be providing regular updates to the Board and to the LDLP

community.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE

As homes within the community are being painted with the new colors a number of owners are

looking at changing their garage doors, main entrance door, windows and/or patio doors. This is a

reminder to please fill out an architectural request form before moving forward with any of these

projects. The forms can be found on the Albert Management website (www.albertmgt.com) or can

be obtained from the office. (It should also be noted that, based upon the committee’s

recommendation, the Board has now approved the option for homeowners to have 16 panel

garage doors.)

During this season the clubhouse has been used frequently for a variety of events. When moving

the furniture, or other items, please be considerate and return them to their original positions.

A special thank you to Greg Asbra for meeting with all of the committee chairs.

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE UPDATE

The Marketing and Communications committee has tentatively scheduled it’s first meeting for

9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 4th in the clubhouse. The committee will be working on an updated

Page 6: MARCH/APRIL 2019 Newsletter LETTER FROM THE BOARD...come and play. Cost is $5 for a packet of bingo cards (three games per card for 10 games), buy as many as you like, with 25 cents

6

charter and start the process of defining its scope of work and developing goals. If interested in

joining this important committee please contact chair Judy Siegel at [email protected]

MAINTENANCE COMMITTEE BACK IN ACTION

Members of the Maintenance Committee have been busy setting up a new schedule of inspections,

responding to homeowner requests and much more. Most recently an inspection of all driveways

and walkways was been completed and “must” repairs will begin soon. Murray Todd and Barry

Kaufman have stepped up to co-chair this committee, but more members are welcome. Please let

the office know if interested (and especially if a “full-time” resident).

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED

Last summer LDLP’s growing ranks of residents who call the community their permanent home

enjoyed CoffeePlus mornings all summer long, as well as monthly WineDowns. These are great

places to socialize, share travel stories and build camaraderie. They are also extremely easy to host.

For CoffeePlus, for example, it’s all about keeping the coffee flowing as well as providing a “plus”

as simple or as complicated as the hosts wish. WineDown is even easier, just making sure to do a

simply cleanup with all attendees regularly pitching in. Ready to give it a try? Even if you’ve never

been both are easy to do and will help us keep our great social momentum going through the

summer. Just contact Patty Nichols at [email protected] to volunteer.

Please also note that the new 2019 directory that can keep us all informed and in touch with one

another is available for $10, sold at LDLP social events or by contacting Patty.

RACQUET COMMITTEE ACTION

LDLP play continued in high gear for March, highlighted by the March 16th monthly tournament.

Action may have been going on at the nearby BNP Paribas but it was also hot on the LDLP

courts. Carolyn Bass took home top honors on the woman’s side and Larry Saward was the big

winner on the men’s side.

The next tournament is scheduled for April 13th. Please contact Murray Todd at

[email protected] to sign up. However, residents don’t have to play to enjoy a rare treat, a Taco

Truck coming to provide exactly what the name implies. This will be arriving after the tournament

has been completed (approximately 1:00 p.m.) and everyone is invited to come and enjoy tacos

tequila and treats for a per person cost of $10.

Page 7: MARCH/APRIL 2019 Newsletter LETTER FROM THE BOARD...come and play. Cost is $5 for a packet of bingo cards (three games per card for 10 games), buy as many as you like, with 25 cents

7

It might also be a good time to grab a game (or more) on the pickleball courts. These are

continuing to see increased play in both singles and doubles. Extra balls and racquets can be found

in the closet of the Maintenance building.

Tennis clinics are currently being held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and 9:00 a.m. Saturdays

at Court #1 for a cost of $10. Free pickleball instruction is at 10:00 a.m. Wednesdays and

Saturdays.

BE A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER!

All dogs in LDLP MUST be on a leash when outside. While it is understood that dogs need

exercise, a retractable leash may be one solution. This area also has a number of dog parks.

However, within LDLP this rule is going to be strictly enforced for the safety of all.

Also please be courteous and pick up after your dog, and encourage visitors and/or renters to do

the same. Too, when walking the lake between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. please try to control dogs’

barking and also please keep your voices lowered as sound travels far and quickly in the desert.
