NMC RevalidationThe proposals, the implications and tools to help

NHS Lothian NMC Revalidation Working Group – Aug 2015

NMC Revalidation

The revised NMC Code – effective from 31st March 2015

25 Standards in four main themes:

• Prioritise people• Practise effectively• Preserve safety• Promote professionalism and trust

It is proposed that:

From April 2016, over the 3 years prior to renewing your NMC registration you must have:

• Undertaken 450 hours of practice-related to your scope of practice. (900 hrs if you are registered nurse & midwife)

• Undertaken and maintained a record of 40 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) including 20 hours participatory learning

• Obtained at least five pieces of practice-related feedback

• Recorded a minimum of five written reflections on the Code, your CPD and your practice-related feedback and discuss these reflections with another NMC registrant

And• Demonstrate to a third party ‘Confirmer’ that you have met the revalidation

requirements. (Your Confirmer will usually be your line manager- Revalidation process ideally linked to

appraisal)

• Declare your health and character and that you have appropriate professional indemnity cover

The Third Party Confirmer

• The Confirmer will be required to have a face to face discussion with you to review your Revalidation evidence and will confirm to the NMC that you have met all the requirements for revalidation.

(If your confirmer is an NMC registrant you can also use this meeting to discuss your five written reflections )

• The Confirmer is being asked to confirm that you have met the

Revalidation requirements –they are NOT being asked to confirm whether you are Fit to Practice

(This is to make sure the NMC have enough time to consider your application.)

• Your revalidation application due date will be clearly communicated in advance to you once revalidation goes live.
