Anointing of the SickPlease know that recent hospital privacy laws have signifi cantly limited our knowledge of parishioners who are hospitalized. If you have a loved one who is ill, please contact contact Mary Whiteside in our Pastoral Care offi ce at 847-907-3450 or [email protected] to request the Anointing of the Sick. Th e ideal time for anointing is when family is present and not necessarily in the fi nal hours of life.

Fr. Terry KeehanMore on Fr. Kurt Please continue to join me in welcoming Fr. Kurt Boras to our Holy Family Community. You can learn more about Kurt by accessing my bul-letin article from last week, August 23, on our web-site. Kurt will be a resident priest with us, meaning he will live here in the rectory and pray with us while presiding at some of our Masses and assist with other sacraments as his schedule permits, but his full-time responsibility will be as a Vicar for Priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. I have known Kurt for 38 years as we are classmates, both ordained by Cardinal Bernardin in 1986 and went through the major seminary in Mundelein together. As a Vicar for Priests, Fr. Kurt will be a support for all of the priests of the Archdiocese. He will travel to parishes and have major responsibilities beyond Holy Family. I was a resident at St. John of the Cross in Western Springs while assuming my full-time duties as one of the Vocation Direc-tors for the Archdiocese from 1987-1995. Like I felt during those years of my priesthood, Kurt will treasure being connected with us in the celebra-tion of the sacraments and in a very limited way beyond, but please remember his primary respon-sibility lies with the larger Archdiocese. This distin-guishes him from a full-time Associate Pastor.

More on Expanded Re-Opening Thank you to so many of you for your under-standing and consideration for the new protocols and procedures as we continue on a path to off er all of the sacraments, but particularly weekend Masses to more of you. I know it is foreign to us but the registration system is still the best way to manage the attendance, not only for the gather-ing itself but, God forbid, should anyone be ex-posed to the virus and not know it, the registration system would help greatly in the contact tracing eff orts to identify those exposed. If you register for Mass and cannot attend, please be considerate of others and cancel your reservation, enabling others to attend. Remem-ber, you can register for Mass by simply calling the Main Offi ce and Debbie will take your regis-

tration. The online process continues to be very effi cient as well. Just a reminder, as you see the presiders removing their masks periodically and musicians and cantors not wearing them during Mass, it is because they are a signifi cant distance away from the congregation, thus allowing extra safe distancing. We are in need of additional Ushers and Greet-ers to expand our Mass off erings both in size and number. Greeters must be pleasant, kind and welcoming. Ushers must be able to escort parish-ioners and visitors into the church so the ability to be mobile is required.

More on the Gospel Discipleship is growing in importance these days as an example of how to live our faith. Many more books on parish life and parish mis-sion statements include an emphasis on being disciples. We are reading from and hearing from the Gospel of Matthew at Mass this liturgical year and discipleship is one of the major themes of that Gospel, so its impact is timely now. Discipleship has its ups and downs and when Jesus calls the early followers to discipleship, sometimes it seems almost impossible to do what he asks them, and us, to do. If we listen carefully we hear very lofty requirements for the title Dis-ciple. In last week’s Gospel passage from Matthew, Peter was praised for being open to the divine revelation regarding the deepest identity of Jesus, prompting praise and a name change. This week we hear Jesus telling Peter he is equivalent to Satan and an obstacle because he is not thinking in a divine manner. In the classic triple statement that is so often repeated in the scriptures, Matthew tells us that the Jesus’ requirements for discipleship are: deny-ing one’s self, picking up the cross, and following Jesus. This is so signifi cant for the Gospel of Mat-thew and for us that I would like to start a series of articles in this space expanding on the various re-cent Gospel passages and how they invite us into discipleship. Look for them the next few weeks.

Preparing for Next Week...We invite you to read the scripture readings for September 6,

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, and then refl ect on these questions:

1. Like Ezekial, what is our responsibility when someone we know has gone astray? Have you had the experience of approaching such a person?

2. God made it clear to Ezekiel that he is not responsible for people’s actions as long as he warns them. Why is it diffi cult to be the messenger?

3. Paul says that “love is the fulfi llment of the law”. Does this clarify your under-standing of the ten commandments?

4. As suggested in our Gospel, have you ever been part of a group intervention (two or more) to confront or simply help somebody?

5. Jesus tells us: “where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” How often are you aware of this, especially in your SCC group?

SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTIONLoving others involves responsibility. What is your responsibility to those who act or speak racially biased towards people of color?

Beloved RetreatAt this time we are evaluating the restrictions at the retreat center and we are making decisions about our fall scheduled retreat for Beloved. The retreat center is planning to host retreats, but there will be many changes due to COVID-19 pro-tections, so we are weighing our options and watching the virus news closely. I would love to know who is interested in attending the retreat, even you do not feel you can attend this fall. Please email Mary Whiteside at [email protected] if you would like to be put on the mailing list to be contacted for this retreat or future retreats. Those on the waiting list get fi rst priority registration.

How can we help you?The Adult Faith Life team is still working from home and we are monitoring all the comments and ques-tions we have received. We would like to help with your spiritual needs, so if there is something we can do for you, please let us know. Just a few things to remember:

1. “THE MASS NEVER ENDS”– This is the time we realize that those words mean more than we ever knew. We are still living what we celebrate at Mass, so remember this in your daily routine. You ARE the body of Christ and we are in this together. 2. Our Catholic Social Teaching should be at the forefront of our communication with others. Please treat all with dignity and respect, especially now that much of our communication is happening on-line where it is so much easier to be anonymous and to share feelings in an unhealthy manner. You repre-sent our faith and Holy Family, so be a good rep! 3. TRUST that God is with us in this pandemic and He will carry us through it to new life.

The Family & Teen Faith Community...off ers faith formation and catechesis to preschool through elementary school aged children and high school teens and their families.

Family & Teen Faith

Will the FTF schedule remain the same? We are staying quite close to our normal schedule (September-April). The digital learning lessons will be designed to go for 45 minutes rather than our regular

90-minute lessons.

Are you expecting parents to teach their own children if we opt for at home digital learning? NO! The teaching part of the lesson will be presented via pre-recorded short videos. If Teen Faith families choose the weekly Zoom classes, Catechists and peer ministers provide the instruction.

Each lesson will include a range of engaging ways for children, teens and parents to choose from in exploring and sharing their faith with one another. For families with younger children, each e-learning lesson is designed to meet the needs of all grade levels, as opposed to separate lessons for each child. Families can do the e-lessons when it is most convenient for their schedule.

Is digital religious education effective? We believe, of course, in- person classes are more beneficial over all. However, at this time it is simply not safe to do so. We also recognize there are advantages digital learning provides (see sidebar)

How will children/teens/families receive their materials? Lesson plans will be posted on the Parish website, along with Flipgrid or Google Classroom links. Families will select a date and time via Sign-Up Genius at the beginning of September to pick-up the other materials they will need to complete the lessons.

Will Tuition Remain the Same? This year we will only use the participating parishioner rate. The Home Faith Tuition scale will follow the same schedule. The 2020-21 tuition schedule is available on the registration link – https://holyfamilyparish.org/family-and-teen-faith- registration

Salaries and benefits account for 70% of our annual budget. At the end of June, we cut one full-time position from FTF. Further staff cuts would result in cutting services. We will still need to purchase books and supplies, and this year we will have to pay subscriptions for some e-learning platforms and digital learning tools as well. Some of the learning aids we use in the various classrooms from year to year will now have to purchased, so each family has access to them.

Tuition assistance is available to all registered parishioners. Please let us know, if you need assistance at the time of registration, by emailing Marta Robak, [email protected].

Questions Parents are asking about Faith Classes

Faith Parents consider the following

Like all learning, religious education requires consistency. If you skip this year, your child/teen will, not only lose out on this year’s religious education, but incur learning losses from previous years. Advantages of Digital Learning

E-Learning is a safer option at this time.

E-Learning provides families with the most flexibility.

E-learning is often more efficient.

E-learning offers us the possibility of personalizing faith formation, by catering to individual needs. It allows learners to choose their learning path and navigate at their own pace.

E-learning leads to better retention. Modern learners prefer bite-sized, interactive content. E-learning tools enable us to make content interactive.

E-learning allows us to engage our children, teens and parents in new ways.

If you have other

questions or concerns please contact a FTF

staff member.

GCFD Produce Mobile DistributionThursday, September 10

7:30am-NoonHoly Family Parish will be distributing fresh produce from the Greater Chicago Food Depository in the remote parking lot on Thursday, Sept 10. If you would like to help with the distribution, contact Sue at 847-907-3443 or [email protected] by Friday, Sept 4. This will be a drive-through distribution to maintain social distancing between volunteers and guests. We ask for adults and children no younger than 12 years old. Due to the pandemic, numbers of people coming for food has doubled, so we need many hands to assist us in distributing the produce to our neighbors in need. We need helpers at 7:30am unloading pal-lets and setting up before the distribution and people to clean up until about noon.

Distribution is outdoors rain or shine.

Habitat for HumanitySpring of Life PartnershipAnnual Report 2019-2020

This was the 14th year Holy Family parishio-ners helped build a home in conjunction with 7 other churches. We completed a project on Edison Street in Elgin in September and began a new project on Shuler in Elgin in December. The latest project was a new construction project rather than a rehab. We completed the house in record time and had the house blessing on August 1st. We have begun a third project which is scheduled for early 2021 completion. There have been more than a dozen HF volunteers who have contributed more than a combined 5,000 hours in support of the Habitat ministry. Holy Family contributes $5,000 annually to support each build. Carpentersville. We are in the midst of completion of a third home in mid-September. 8 volunteers have given over 5,250 volunteer hours. Holy Family contributes $5,000 annually to support each build.
