This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

1 John 5:14

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray and to give more than either we desire or deserve: Pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask except through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.

The new vestry is made up of our vicar Chris who chairs the meetings, Alison Jephson & Fiona Johns (wardens), Steve Clancey and James Rodley (synod members), and Bruce Chapman, Ravi Cheruvu, Rob Orange, Richard Rendle, Gloria Su (elected at the AGM) and Joy Garza (coopted as a St James’ representative).

Membership of the sub-committees was confirmed as follows:

Building and Grounds: Richard Rendle (chair), Ray McTeigue, Jackie Stringfellow, David Moyle, Jean Hollis

Finance: Ross Nicholas (chair), Noela Rendle (treasurer), Ray Hollis, Kevin Wakeham

St James Church & Trust Funds: Maurice Reynolds (chair), Ross Nicholas (secretary), Dorothy Andrew, Joy Garza (vestry), Shaun Steele, Michael Lawrence, Fiona Johns (vestry).

Missions: Jean Hollis, Ray Hollis, Denise Williams, Susan Lawrence.

Rob Orange has been appointed reserve warden to cover for Fiona or Alison if either is away.

Synod last year asked that parishes report back to Synod this year on initiatives taken to help reduce climate change. The ‘Dark Skies’ motion from the AGM is primarily about caring for the environment, but it was noted that the parish has done a number of things to help reduce our impact on climate change, including installation of LED lighting in the church and increasing the amount of insulation in the roof space at St Tim’s (done in conjunction with replacing the roof), as well as ongoing efforts with recycling as much as possible across the parish.

A resolution was passed that in the decisions that the Building & Grounds committee and St James Church and Trust Funds committee make, they keep in mind the dark sky policy.

Chris in his report, told us of agreement for our parish to lead a church service once a month in the care facility part of Russley Village which opened recently. A team of people has expressed interest in this.

There was also discussion about resources available to meet the needs of older parishioners, particularly those who don’t have family to assist.

Page 5: News Sheet 19th Sunday Ordinary Time 9 August 2020 IN THIS … · 2020. 8. 9. · except through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. News Sheet 19th Sunday Ordinary Time 9 August 2020

It was encouraging to read of the work of the various ministries in the parish, following a recent meeting of the leaders of those ministries. There is so much happening as we all seek to reach out to others and to serve in our community.

Noela Rendle (treasurer) in presenting the report from the Finance Committee took time to explain the layout of the parish financial statements. She is reporting to the diocese weekly (as requested) concerning our cash flow. Unlike several parishes in this diocese our income did not drop sufficiently during lockdown for us to qualify for the government wage subsidy. The finance committee is however aware that parish income may yet be affected by the wider economy.

A Paypal button is being added to the parish website to enable people to give in that way if they wish.

The replacement of the roof over the main church at St Tim’s has largely been completed. The replacement of exterior doors into the Starlights’ room and also the meeting room/creche has been completed by parishioners, thus saving costs. However the group involved are aware that they are getting older, and new blood is required to help with such tasks in the future.

Installation of a dish sanitiser in the kitchen at St Tim’s is considered necessary to reduce health and safety risks. The cost is expected to be approximately $7,000, with $2,000 having been received from a Christchurch City Council grant. A parish concert is planned for Saturday 7th November to assist with fundraising.

A small group consisting of Gloria Su, Joy Garza, James Rodley, Rob Orange, Bruce Chapman (an addition since the vestry meeting) and Chris Ponniah (when available) has been asked to review the needs of the youth position ahead of when Izzie Neville’s contract ends. They will consult with others also, and report back to the next vestry.

Vestry is holding a retreat day on Saturday 5th September which Chris will lead.

So there is lots happening for you to pray about. Vestry does value your prayers!

Alison Jephson & Fiona Johns (wardens)

The project to replace the upper roof is now complete and a big vote of thanks go to the Building and Grounds committee and Ray McTeigue and Richard Rendle in particular, as well as the contractors from FHS Roofing. The level of insulation in the roof cavity has also been upgraded. The money for this major project was given by you, our faithful and generous parishioners, through 'days of giving' over the past two years. Thank you!!!

There is still work to be done on the lower portions of the original roof and that will happen as funds allow. Other projects at both churches have also been completed from those 'day of giving' funds.

Vestry has appointed Rob Orange, James Rodley, Joy Garza and Gloria Su to review our youth ministry and to bring recommendations to Vestry about this ministry and the person specifications for the Youth Pastor position.

If you have any thoughts or comments about the Youth Ministry, could you please give it in writing to one of the members of the review team.
