The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is on Saturday, 8/15. The Catholic Bishops decreed that there is no obligation to attend Mass when this date falls on a Saturday—which means this is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation this year.
Dear Fellow Pilgrims,
My grandfather, Alfred Meyer,
was an old school German
farmer in Loyal, Wisconsin. In
his later years, his circumfer-
ence matched his height, a ratio
accentuated by the way he
pulled his trouser beltline north
of his own equator. It was quite impressive. The man lived
by a bygone code of honor, much of which he passed to
my father and ultimately to me.
Grandpa was not complicated; he believed in six things:
God, family, community, honesty, draft horses, and
mission. And his mission was farming. He got up before
dawn and worked in the sun all day, driven by the heartfelt
and noble purpose of feeding the world. Yup, the whole
world. Perhaps he had been more pragmatic when he was
younger and raising his children. Maybe the realities and
expectations of feeding his own family had driven his work
ethic in those years, and idealism was a luxury that crept in
once his nest was empty. But here’s the thing: Alfred
Meyer was not a pie-eyed idealist. Both of his feet were
solidly planted in the earth he plowed and planted.
I remember nothing that torqued Grandpa’s sense of right
and wrong more than hunger and starvation. In his mind,
feeding hungry people was the most obvious and
foundational starting point of Christianity. If people are
starving, you give them food. It’s as basic as that. The thing
that bothered Grandpa more than anything else was the
fact that American farmers like himself produced plenty of
food to feed the world. There was no reason why kids in
India or Africa or Flint or Oakland should go hungry. The
problem, Grandpa said again and again between Sunday
afternoon hands of Sheepshead, was distribution. As he
spoke these words, he would plant his index finger so
firmly on the tabletop that the short stacks of nickels
would tip over. “People starve to death because there is a
food distribution problem, and that’s a political problem.
And there is no
excuse for it.
None. Zero.”
He would speak
with so much
animation that
drool would
spill over his
protruding
bottom lip.
I’m bringing
this up today
because it’s
Confirmation
weekend at our
parish. This
finger-pounding, justice-seeking, spittle-inducing faith of
Grandpa Alfred Meyer is the faith we are all baptized and
confirmed into. At its most foundational and rudimentary
level, our faith calls us to care enough about our fellow
human beings to make sure everyone has food to eat,
clean water to drink, and a safe place to sleep at night.
And Grandpa was arguably right – the problem is not
that we can’t make this happen, but rather that we don’t.
The problem is not scarcity or abundance, it is a problem
of economics and politics. And that makes it a problem
of passion and priorities.
As we all renew our baptismal promises, we are invited to
reflect on our own passion and priorities. What do we
care about so much that we will pound our finger into
the table? Another way of asking that question is to
examine our own sense of mission. Stated simply,
Why am I here? Why did God give me
this life at this time with these gifts?
Journey well and pray always.
Peace,
Deacon Steve Meyer

Our Cal l as Cathol ic Cit izens Part of our vocation is to be faithful citizens, and to use our individual and collective gifts to promote justice and peace for all. The U.S. Bishops state that protection of life and the dignity of the human person are
foundational and that without this, all other treatments of the human person become relative and circumstantial. Catholics are urged to consider the church teachings on
these issues and to help shape the moral character of our communities and society so that our children and grandchildren can continue to live in a country that is so abundantly blessed. For more information, call the parish office or go online to www.faithfulcitizenship.org.
