Issue N o 3 12 th March 2019 Newsletter | UYSC | www.uysc.vic.edu.au www.uysc.vic.edu.au www.uysc.vic.edu.au uysc.vic.edu.au From the Principal's Desk Congratulations! Over the last fortnight, I have had the pleasure of attending a number of Year Level Assemblies and a Whole School Assembly. The most pleasing aspect of the assemblies has been the joy and pride in our students as they receive their awards. Due to the high number of awards, we cannot recognise all the students at a Whole School Assembly, so, they are recognised in front of their Year Level or Sub-School. I strongly encourage parents to discuss the awards with their child, particularly to those who received them, please take the time to congratulate and praise your child. Many students find public praise difficult as it is no longer common, however, we believe public recognition and praise is essential to the development of our students. Student Leadership 2019 We also publicly recognised the student leadership body from Year 7 to Year 12 at the Whole School Assembly. The Principal Team then met with the student leaders over morning tea to begin the establishment of a leadership plan and the representation of our students in the future planning and direction of the College. Having the opportunity to work alongside so many brilliant young people leaves me very optimistic for the future. School Values I have been able to commend so many of our students for exhibiting our school values over the course of the first half of this term. I would also like to thank many parents for ensuring their child is in correct uniform and for their continued support of the College. Although I have only been here for three and a half years as Principal, the students this year have made the best, most committed start to a year I have seen. Congratulations to all! Open Night - Save the Date! Our Open Night for prospective families is Thursday May 2nd, 7:00pm starting in the UYSC Theatre. If you know of any family looking for a school, please pass this information on. We would of course, love you to pass it on with a strong recommendation! Year 7 So Far Has Been Amazing! We have had a wonderful experience in Year 7 so far. Our teachers

have been understanding, supportive and friendly. They have helped us experience a nice, warm and exciting start to our high school journey. They have encouraged us to make new friends and become

more confident. Our new friends have helped us have a smoother start to the year and have helped us in gaining confidence to try new things

such as applying for captain roles, going for SRC, joining in interschool sports and getting involved in classwork.

We have started FLIP(Future Learners Inquiry Program) and we have been learning about Growth Mindsets, Fixed Mindsets and how they help us to learn. We have also learnt about how the brain works. We have definitely been challenged so far in FLIP.

In English, we have been reading a class book called ‘Once’. It is about a naive Jewish boy named Felix who lived during World War II. Felix had lived in an orphanage for 3 years and 8 months. One day he received a full carrot in his dinner and believed that his parents were coming back to get him. Then… you will have to get the book to find out the rest.

In Maths, we have been focusing on measurement. At the start of the topic, we had a test to see where we were at and were split into different groups based on our ability. Then once we are in our groups, we get a sheet and must do the lessons that are on the sheet that we have been assigned to do. At the end of the topic we will be doing a post-test that tells us how we have improved. We have been challenged by this area of maths and have learnt a lot.

Lunchtime and recess is the time to have food, hang out with friends and for a lot of people, it’s downball. In the Year 7 area downball is quite popular and sometimes very competitive. We have had a lot of fun playing downball trying to get to ''king''. Our canteen is amazing because of two reasons; slushies and food plus the rest of the yummy things that they have in there.

Our amazing Year 7 Captains are:

To receive the roles the above successful recipients had to submit a application and write about why they deserve this role and what would the bring to this job. Then they had to be interviewed by Mr Cliff and Ms Vanderkolk. They worked very hard to get their positions, so congratulations to all.

Year 7 has been amazing!

Year 8 FLIPAt the moment in FLIP we are learning about different art movements. The art movements we are studying are Street Art, Realism, Expressionism and Dada. We are learning about the significant artists, materials and techniques

used and the timeline of the art movement. Then we will be creating self-portraits in the style of our art movement. Here are some pictures of us practising our expressionist art techniques.

Year 8 S.T.E.A.M.Here in Year 8 STEAM we have been learning about programming

Edison bots. We have used EdScratch and EdBlocks to program them into doing cool things like dancing and making music. We have a new room for STEAM, in C7. It has new computers and has whiteboard tables and epic blankets that keep the

Hi I’m Tao, I love to encourage motivational skills in people of all ages. I love to support the community by volunteering

and helping out with activities of all kinds such as mentoring kids. I find that leadership skills are helping me with confidence. My main goal is to reach Year 12 and graduate to university to study law. I would love to become a police officer.Tao Walpole

Hi I’m Emily, I enjoy playing netball and being a part of a team environment. This year I would love to see a

sustainability focus and see students care about the schools grounds and how it affects the environment. I enjoy learning and although I’m not sure what I would like to do after year 12, I plan on attending university. I’m excited for this year and changes the SRC and leadership teams can make.Emily Hay

Hi I’m Amy, I enjoy playing netball and spending time with my friends. I can’t wait for the things we will accomplish this

year and to represent Year 9s in SRC meetings. I would love to introduce more health and fitness around our school and to bring all year levels closer together. Amy Morris

I’m Sophie and I’m on the year 9 leadership team this year. I would love to improve the education around mental

health, it’s a big issue that isn’t recognised. I always want to learn more and more. After year 12 I would like to have a gap year volunteering in a third world country to help with problems that affect them gravely. I am very passionate about astrology and science because it just makes me think that there is so much to learn about the world and that it’s so much bigger than me. I am looking forward to this year and the amazing things that could happen.Sophie Gray

Year 9 and 10 Leadership ElectiveLeadership continues to be a fun and challenging elective for our Middle School students. It is always exciting to watch our students solve problems and develop their confidence as they learn and practise more about being a leader. Last

week, the Year 9 class was challenged to create a structure to support a ball as high in the air as possible. There were a range of innovative designs and different leadership styles that prevailed.

The Year 10 class created a sculpture to demonstrate what leadership meant to them. Our guest artist, Ms Molan, awarded a class winner to the group consisting of Kirah Pascoe, Angela Sanders and Brodie Lawton. Each group effectively negotiated, communicated and innovated to come up with some excellent representations of their learning.

Year 7 CricketWe played three games against Lilydale Heights, Lilydale High and Healesville High – scoring 202, 159 and 187 winning each game comfortably. We played Lilydale High in the Grand Final and beat them by

95 runs – 176 to 81. Some of the standout players where Ryan Thompson – 52 runs off one over! Harvey Smith and Dylan Walker both captained and performed well throughout the day. ''We are Yarra Division Champions!''

Jeremy Cliff | Year 7/Junior School Leader

Year 8 Boys CricketMr Gray and Riley Foley (Yr 9) coached the Boys and Girls Cricket Teams on 4/3/19. Both teams consisted of some excellent players and they conducted themselves perfectly on the day. The girls won the event after a thrilling 2 point win against Lilydale High School in the final. All the girls were great. A massive thank you to the Year 7 girls who helped fill the team. The most valuable player for the day was Ameilia Kuth, making lots of runs and taking plenty of wickets.

The boys also won in a great team effort. Most valuable players included Locky Theobald smashing some big 6s and Hudson Semple who was a very economical bowler. Both teams go through to play in the Eastern Zone Finals in November. A massive congratulations also to Riley who was an amazing leader on the day.

Year 8 Girls CricketThe day got off to a great start with the girls winning their first game, Ashlyn Hermansen was exceptional in her batting ability in the first game. The girls went on to the second game where they had a massive win; the whole team did well with bat and ball. Congratulations to them all. The third game was a close one where they only won by four runs which took them to the Grand Final. This was a tough challenge between Lilydale High and UYSC where we just pulled through.

Year 9/10 Boys Cricket

We started well against Healesville in the first game with the ball but soon folded in our batting. A good innings from Baily Humphrey almost won us

the game with us going down by about five runs. The second game we won by a large margin with a great batting performance from both Baily and myself.

Riley Foley Yr 9

CongratulationsCongratulations to Riley Foley for making the Under 15s Indoor State Cricket Team.

Good luck to Ameilia Kuth for her upcoming tryouts for Victorian State Cricket Team.

Outdoor EducationOn Thursday the 28th of February, the Year 9 Outdoor Education class went to Nunawading Indoor Rock Climbing. When we arrived the staff took us through a safety course and taught us how to belay so we could stay safe throughout our visit there. It was a good day to overcome our fears and push ourselves to new limits. There were heaps of different walls and all different levels so there was a wall to suit everyone. Although finding some walls scary it was great to push ourselves with friends to do the best we could. Overall a fantastic day which has us all pumped for our three-day Cathedral Ranges Camp.

Portia Swankie, Lily Smith Yr 9

Year 12 English In Year 12 English, students have been studying the film Rear

Window. Students participated in a gallery walk activity, where they chose the six most important images that they believed represented the key ideas in the film. The students were extremely engaged in the activity and they were successfully able to explain and justify their thinking. It was interesting to see the differences between each group’s interpretation of both the film as well as what they decided the images represented.

DID YOU KNOW?Upper Yarra Secondary College students are now able to use their PTV approved UYSC ID Card to apply for concession travel on public transport.

This means students at Upper Yarra Secondary College no longer need to fill out a form, pay for and carry the dedicated PTV’s Student ID Card.

Students should register their myki to protect their card’s balance if it’s lost or stolen. If the registered myki is lost or stolen, the student can contact the PTV Call Centre on 1800 800 007 6am to midnight daily (all night Friday and Saturday) to block their card and a replacement myki pass will be issued.

Thank you to Ms Bishop for organising this.
