to go by. Last year, they converted several closed down shops in the town into pop-up art galleries.

Colchester United FC are the professional football club in the town, currently plying their trade in League One. There is a plethora of other sports teams in town, including Colchester Rugby Football Club, Colchester Gladiators American Football Club, Colchester Weight Lifting Club, and Colchester & East Essex Cricket Club.

If all else fails, head to the ever-popular Colchester Zoo!

Throw into the mix the seat of learning that is the University of Essex, Britain’s most international uni with students from over 125 countries, and the

A former capital of Roman Britain, Colchester in Essex is rightly proud of its roots and history, proclaiming its status as ‘Britain’s Oldest Recorded Town’ on road signs as you enter it’s locale. But with a significant program of regeneration underway, it is the present and future which are of equal attraction to resident and visitor alike.

For those looking to get a feel for life in the area, there is plenty in the way of museums, the arts, sports, and other notable attractions. Colchester Castle is a stunning example of a largely complete Norman castle, and is a grade 1 listed building. Within the castle grounds is The Castle Museum, which brings to life Colchester’s Roman past. Other museums include; Hollytrees Museum, Natural History Museum and the Tymplerley Clock Musuem.

If catching a gig or a show if more your thing, then head for the Mercury Theatre, or the multi-function Colchester Arts Centre. The live music scene is thriving locally, with the hub being such venues as; The Twist, The Fat Cat, and Charter Hall. The arty bohemian in you will feel at home in Colchester, if the example of art collective ‘Slack Space’ is anything

region’s premier business centre at Colchester Business Park, and you begin to get a feel for the all-round attraction of Colchester.

And if you pay a visit, and want some locally relevant pub trivia to ingratiate yourselves with the locals, try this: Colchester was hit by a major earthquake in 1884!

Just an hour’s train ride from London, Southend-on-Sea has a fantastic choice of beaches, with seven miles of award-winning seafront stretching from Shoebury East Beach through to Leigh-on-Sea. Give watersports a try at Southend Marine Activities Centre which offers introductory courses in Sailing, Canoeing, Windsurfing, Powerboat Driving and Jet skiing. Windsurfers and kitesurfers from the UK and all over the world come to ‘The Ray’ for its world-class conditions. On top of all this, five yacht clubs

provide choice for sailorsFor the adrenaline junky Southend’s rollercoaster RAGE at Adventure Island won’t disappoint. Or come face to face with a shark or a stingray at Sea Life Adventure Centre and find out about the fascinating creatures in the sea at the “Rockpool” where regular talks and demonstrations are given. For the more faint-hearted amongst us, the railway ride to the end of Southend’s famous pier should not to be missed.

Southend’s world famous pier is the town’s historical icon. It is still the world’s longest pleasure pier at 1.34 miles. Since being built in 1830 however, the pier has lived through fires, boat crashes and two world wars! Take in fantastic views all year long from the sun-deck or try your hand at sea fishing. Then take the Southend Cliff Lift (one of only a few surviving

funicular railways) and travel to Southend’s High Street, taking in more spectacular views!

Southend comprises of a mix of retail and a lively night scene. The town offers more than 300 great places to eat. Bag a table with a sea view at the Archway Cafes on the seafront or head to the Cockle Sheds for a taste of top quality local seafood. And do not miss Rossi’s ice cream, a long tradition in Southend. The Original Rossi are one of the few UK makers of artisan

ice cream still using milk as opposed to just milk powder giving Rossi its unique delicious taste. With the Ice Cream factory still based in S o u t h e n d - o n - S e a , there are many cafes and restaurants that stock this famous and delicious ice cream. Hungry?!

Later, discover ancient woodland on horseback at Belfairs Park and Nature Reserve – home to the heath fritillary (a rare butterfly). Throughout

the year you can also hear live music performances at Southend’s very own bandstand in Priory Park or catch a West End musical at Cliffs Pavilion above the seafront. Enjoy a night of laughter at a comedy club in town or try your luck at Rendezvous or Maxim’s Casino. Moreover, the Edwardian Palace Theatre is a grade II building built in 1912 and hosts a feast of events and festivals all year round. And if you make it to Southend’s Festival of the Air, you will see breathtaking displays as the legendary Red Arrows top the bill!

There’s something to do whatever the weather at Southend-on-Sea.
