Previously this has been funded by the Local Authority and so access for schools was at no cost. Going forward the LA is no longer able to fund this. To gain access to school data directly, the cost would be £150 for an Infant School, £325 for primary schools and £1300 for secondary schools. However, if you become a member of the MSA the cost to your school remains at £1 per pupil and this will give you full access to FFT Aspire as well as everything else included in the aƩached MSA Oer. FFT Aspire provides key target seƫng and school performance evaluaƟon informaƟon using the latest curriculum and accountability measuresquick and easy to access and providing indepth analysis to support future planning and preparaƟon for Ofsted and Estyn inspecƟons. We have nalised the MSA Oer for 2016/17. In addiƟon to the FFT Aspire access, your school will also get access to 3 Senior Leader conferences (we are currently developing a session on wriƟng and an update on assessment). Following  a  meeting  with  Jenny  Patterson  and  Jane  Duncan  from  the  LA

Safeguarding  team, MSA was  asked  to  set‐up  and    facilitate  a  Safeguarding

Strategy Group. There have been 3 meetings to date. At the meetings, there has

been  discussion around Prevent Duty and CSE resources that have been used in

schools and  it was agreed that the MSA website could be used as a  ‘one‐stop’

shop to      upload these recommended resources for everyone to  access. You

can  view  these  resources  at  http://manchesterschoolsalliance.co.uk/?p=1583.  A  ‘safeguarding  self‐

audit’  proforma was  brought  to  one  of  the meetings  and  the  group  asked  to  give  feedback.  It was

agreed that this will benefit schools as it can be used to identify gaps, used to share with governors as

well as used during Ofsted  inspections. This has now been circulated to all schools with the aim for this

to be completed by all schools    annually. Other topics discussed at the meetings have included the DP

Networks, information sharing, gaps in policies and updates on the MSCB Board.

Recent Highlights…

senior leaders a ended to hear Stephen Anwyll present ‘Assessment beyond Levels and

Whole School Accountability.’ During the session Stephen looked at the

necessary  knowledge  and  skills, how    leadership

can develop a robust system, repor ng to parents

and  transi on  to  and  from  the    primary  phase.

The  high  turnout  at  the  event  highlighted  the

level  of  uncertainty  around  assessment  s ll  in

Recent Highlights…..

The Annual Manchester Governors’ Conference, which ran  in partnership

with MCC and  the MGA,  took place  in February 2016. Keynote  speakers

Julie Yarwood, HMI and John Edwards presented to an audience of 70 at

The  Irish  World  Heritage  Centre.  Julie’s  presenta on  ‘Effec ve

Governance  and  the  Ofsted  framework:  being  ready,  and  not  just  for

inspec on’ iden fied what inspec on tells us about effec ve governance,

provided  an  understanding  of  governors’  roles  and  responsibili es with

reference  to  the  Ofsted    framework  and

considered  how  governors  can  be er

understand their organisa on and use what

they  find  to  support  its  improvement.

John’s  talk  focussed  on  the  changing  landscape  of  educa on  over

the next 4  years  at both na onal  and  local  context  as well  as  the

possible  future  role  of  the  council  and ways  in which  schools  can

shape this  locally. The 2 keynotes were then followed by a choice of

workshops which were all  facilitated by Manchester governors. Workshop  tles were  ‘Governing

Mul ‐Academy  Trusts,’  ‘Governing  Body  Self‐Review’  and  ‘Succession  Planning  and  Becoming  a

Chair.’  Feedback  suggests  that  the

governors  enjoyed  mee ng  other

governors  and  sharing  experiences,

found  both  keynotes  excellent,

informa ve  and    current  and  that

they enjoyed the  informal structure

of  the  workshops  as  it  gave more

opportunity  to  network.  Many

commented that they were going to

be taking lots of informa on back to share with their governing bodies.

Schools Links with Sweden

Some Manchester Primary Schools already have informal links with the City of Falun in Sweden and the Deputy Mayor, who has responsibility for Education, is keen to extend this collaboration. They want to share practices around pre-school improvements. Falun is currently used as an example of good practice within Sweden but they still see room for further development. They also want to share experience around integration and look at how schools can support all students to succeed, regardless of nationality and social background and how opportunities are used and challenges met in regards to the recent wave of immigration in both cities.

They are hoping to visit Manchester later this year and also want to invite some Manchester school leaders out to Falun. If this is something you are interested in your school being involved in, please contact Dave Carter at [email protected]

Did you know there is an un-tapped pool of qualified and experienced teachers who are

unable to be considered for employment because they have not taught in UK schools for

more than 5 years? Yet according to supply teacher agencies, they only need a twelve week

placement to obtain a supply teacher post.

A school based, structured teaching programme allows programme participants to refresh fully on

what is current in education and gain teaching experience in their specialist area. Schools,

academies and colleges benefit from engaging a qualified teacher with no fees or wages to pay,

and potentially employing the programme participant at the end of the programme - with no

Teach Again Ltd finders’ fees for recruitment from programmes.

Inspire Maths and the Singapore Approach to Teaching MathematicsFind out how Inspire Maths can transform mathematics teaching and learning in your school

The new National Curriculum has higher expectations of pupils (and teachers) and requires learning for mastery. This workshop, led by UK experts in the Singapore approach to teaching and learning mathematics, will explore aspects of this approach that could help you to meet these increased standards whilst also creating confident and enthused learners of mathematics. Through this free afternoon workshop we will consider how the Singapore approach to mathematics and the Inspire Maths programme:

l Develops fluency and mastery leading to deep conceptual understanding

l Uses a spiral approach to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving

l Utilises the ‘Singapore Bar’ model drawing method as a valuable problem-solving tool

l Embeds variation theory in effective textbook content to support pupil learning

THE GREAT SCIENCE SHARE - 2016 Save the date  Wednesday 6th July 2016 a day for young people across           Greater Manchester to share the science they enjoy with new audiences

What is the day for?  Young people of all ages - early years, primary, secondary schools and colleges. It is a chance for them to share their fa-vourite STEM activities and learning. Audiences can be other young learners in their school or other schools, families, or the wider community. Shares can be face to face or online.

Why should we get involved?  This is a great opportunity for young people and schools to be part of Greater Manchester’s year as the European City of Science. It’s a time of year when young people have lots to share and celebrate. This will build on their work from STEM initiatives throughout the year and encourage creativity, confi-dence, ownership and fun and create a buzz about science.

What can I do now?  Start thinking about what you’d like to do on the 6th July 2016 and sharing ideas with others. You might like to work with an existing partner or STEM Ambassador to plan activity. If you want to go big and join up with other schools do get in touch with us at [email protected]

Who leads it?          Teacher, schools and colleges. The ‘science shares’ should be planned and delivered by young people.

What type of activities?   Young people might share their learning from what they’ve been doing in class, outdoors, clubs, other schemes and competitions across the year, or plan something new. This is a great opportunity to take a creative approach. Activities may include: science themed assemblies, presenting an experiment or prototype, science circus, science fairs led by young people, a big science busk, maker day, science poster parade or a science dance off. Outdoor activities could include a science picnic, a science draw or a whole school experiment.
