DC Efficiency in a nutshell
• PUE – Power Utilization Effectiveness
– Facility consumption as factor of the IT load
TOTAL FACILITY POWER 1 MW
PUE = ---------------------------------- = ----------------- = 2.0
TOTAL IT EQUIPMENT POWER .5 MW
• DCiE – Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency
– IT consumption as a percentage of the facility total
IT EQUPMENT POWER .5 MW
DCiE = ---------------------------------- = ----------------- = 0.5
TOTAL FACILITY POWER 1 MW
DC Efficiency in a nutshell
• According to a survey conducted by Supermicro published December
2018
– Enterprise Data Centers have an average PUE of 1.89
– 58% of respondents did not know their PUE
– 22% of those measuring had a PUE above 2.0
– 6% were in the ideal range of 1.0 to 1.19
• IMPACT ON PUE
– IT Equipment
• Telecommunications Equipment
• Server Load
– Air Movement
– Cooling
• DC Cooling
• Comfort Cooling
– All non-critical infrastructurehttps://www.supermicro.com/wekeepitgreen/Data_Centers_and_the_Environment_Dec2018_Final.pdf
The History DC Efficiency at Cologix Columbus
• Cologix Columbus

• Built 2010 as a dedicated facility
• Acquired by Cologix in 2015
• 21,000 sq. ft. of raised floor
• Chilled water cooling open condenser loop centrifugal chiller (installed 2015)
• 2019 AVG April-July PUE: 1.58
– COL 3
• Built 2017-18 as a dedicated facility
• 80,000 sq. ft. of raised floor

DC Efficiency Efforts at Cologix Columbus
• Hot Aisle Containment– Directional perforated tiled in the floor
– Return air ceiling tiles in hot aisles
• Free Cooling Components– Ability to shut down the centrifugal chiller (COL 2) or condenser fans (COL 3) when ambient
temperature can be used to remove heat
• Temperature and Humidity Standards at Cologix– ASHRAE TC 9.9 recommends temperatures of 64-80.6 for an A1 data center with allowable
temperatures ranging from 59-89.6
– ASHRAE recommends 60% relative humidity
– Cologix is using a variety of methods to maintain this “sweet spot”
• CRAC Dehumidification
• Stulz Humidifiers
• Make Up Air– COL 3 we are adding 1500 cfm of conditioned outside air to the data center return plenums
• LED/Motion Controlled Lighting– Three facilities located on Scherers Court in Columbus
• 100% of our space is allocated for the data centers and our customers
