Chairman’s CornerFirst, I have some exciting news to share. As you can see from the announcement on this page, the War-ren Cherry Scholarship Fund has received a gift of $100,000 from the Lewis-Sebring Family Foundation. That represents fully 10 percent of the goal we have set to raise $1 million. We learned of this extraordi-nary gift on Thanksgiving eve, and we’re still pinching ourselves. I want to extend my personal gratitude to Chuck Lewis and Penny Sebring for this magnificent gesture of support for the Cherry cause.

Now on to other news. Thanks to co-chairs Bill Bridges, Jeff Doman, Joe Keitel, John Powell, Bob Reece, Bart Rocca and the other members of the Golf Committee for making our 23rd annual Golf Outing the most successful ever.

Thanks as well to co-chairs Timon Jandora and Rita McKissic and the entire Book Dramatization Commit-tee for a lovely evening, to Barbara Rinella for a thrill-ing performance, and to Beth and Jeff Scales for open-ing their beautiful home to us on October 5.

Special thanks to WCSF founding member and long-time treasurer Steve Strauss as he leaves the Cher-ry board. At the same time I want to welcome Anne Bodine, who is joining the board for the first time.

As always, my heartfelt thanks to everyone on our outstanding board, and to our community of friends.

I invite you to join us for our next Award Dinner on April 30, 2017, and to next year’s golf tournament scheduled for June 24, 2017.

I should point out that even during these challeng-ing economic times, the Cherry Scholarship Fund has expanded to include part-time and graduate students. We need your help so we can continue our work of in-vesting in the education of our youth. I sincerely hope you will consider making a contribution to the fund.

I think it’s important to note that several Cherry Scholarship recipients are now teaching our future leaders. Without that scholarship, their dream might never have become a reality. Thank you in advance for your kind support.

With the application process for Cherry scholarships under way, we asked two for-mer scholars to talk about their experience.

Alanna Williams received a Cherry schol-arship in 2013 and again in 2016. Now in her senior year, she is majoring in learning and education studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She traveled recently to Italy to study at an early childhood school .

“Without the scholarship and the kind and generous people who support the Cher-ry Scholarship Fund, this study abroad trip may not have been possible,” she said. “I wish to find out what makes the Reggio Emilia ap-proach to learning and teaching so effective. I want to be able to implement those same effective teaching styles for low-income and minority students back in my community.”

She has decided to stay on at U of I to pursue a master’s degree in a pro-gram that combines curriculum and instruction with entrepreneurship.

“Since my first year as a Cherry scholar, it was like I joined a family. My extended Cherry Scholarship family has shared in my triumphs and tribu-lations,” Alanna said. “If it was not for the Cherry scholarship, I may have had to take a break during my undergraduate career to work full time in order to pay for my schooling. Also, the network of support the Cherry Scholarship family offered me is extraordinary.”

Reflecting on her experience with the Cherry organization, Alanna said, “Many times, we doubt ourselves. We sometimes feel like we are not smart enough, not deserving, not worthy enough and not good enough. We might even say, ‘There’s no way they’ll choose me.’ I’ve felt like that myself, and I said the same thing. Now as a two-time recipient myself, I’d say to students who are considering applying for a Cherry Scholarship: You do deserve this opportunity, you are worthy of a chance. Go for it!”

Alanna added, “A few weeks before my trip to Italy, I received an amaz-ing gift from a Cherry board member, with a gift card that read, ‘You nev-er walk alone.’ With the Warren

Book dramatization takes flightAn enthusiastic crowd filled the home of hosts Beth and Jeff Scales on Octo-ber 5 to enjoy the 2016 book dramatization.

This year, 80 attendees witnessed Barbara Rinnella’s stirring interpretation of the life of Beryl Markham, based on Paula McLain’s bestseller Circling the Sun. Markham was born in England, grew up in Kenya and went on to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean from east to west.

Thanks to two 2016 Cherry schol-arship recipients, Gerald Daye and Al-anna Williams, who offered remarks about their college careers, plans for the future and experience with the Cherry Scholarship Fund.

And hats off to the Benefit Committee for organizing and conducting the event: co-chairs Timon Jandora and Rita McKissic and committee members Mickii Abrams, Pam Akins-Schanette, Lun Ye Crim Barefield, Margo Brown, Ei-leen Cohn, Mary Erickson, Lynn Hammell, Kathy Hardgrove, Patricia Heaston, Ann Johnson, Rose Johnson, Claire Lawrence, Julie Levine, Laurie Levy, Iden Nowlin, Nicki Pearson, Carol Prieto, Patty Cherry Reece, Gerri Sizemore, Mimi Spivack and Sandy Vitantonio.

The mission of the Warren W. “Billy” Cher-ry Scholarship Fund, named in memory of a much-loved and re-spected Evanston edu-cator, is to perpetuate his total acceptance of all people, his com-mitment to the high-est standards of educa-tional excellence, and his energetic dedica-tion to enriching the children and institu-tions of Evanston. For more information, visit cherryscholarship.org.

Cherry Scholarship Fund, that statement couldn’t be more true!”

Matthew Hunter received a Cherry scholarship in 2005, the year he graduated from ETHS. A talented musician, he went to Michigan State University and majored in music education. After graduating in 2010, he returned to Evanston and began his career as a teacher.

He started at Roycemore School and then moved to District 65 where he spent four years as a general music teacher. He is now director of choirs at Niles West High School in Skokie.

“I will always love District 65, but I’m really enjoying what I do at the high

school level,” Matthew said. “I’m focusing on my special-ty—vocal music—and teach-ing in the way I’ve wanted to from the start.”

Since receiving his schol-arship, Matthew has been an ardent supporter of the Cherry Scholarship Fund. He stayed in “constant personal communication” with the or-ganization, particularly with Cherry president Bob Reece.

Matthew has been happy to lend his singing talents to Cherry events, including the 20th anniversary celebra-tion in 2013. Wanting to do even more, he joined the board in 2015. “I wanted to

find a way to give back to the community. Even though I no longer teach there, I still live in Evanston and I wanted to continue the connection,” Matthew said.

“What would I say to a senior at ETHS who’s won-dering about applying for a Cherry scholarship? Just ap-ply. I know there are students who feel they don’t fit the cri-teria or might not make the grade, but you have to aim high. All I can tell you is that I dreamt big, and the people at Cherry helped make my

dreams come true. They can do the same for you.”

Thank you, Steve StraussThe board would like to recognize founding member Steve Strauss for his extraordinary contribution as treasurer of the Warren W. Cherry Scholarship Fund. His commitment and dedication to the organization and the commu-nity are greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Steve. The Cherry Scholarship Fund is better because of your 23 years of ex-emplary service.

Matthew Hunter
