Chairman’s Chat

Brenda Granshaw FACI

I am delighted to report the success of the film “The Robbery” at UNICA. Those who attended the Triangle Final or any of the heats which included Walthamstow Amateur Cinevideo Club, would have seen this hilarious film. The maker, Kevin Langan, agreed that it could be included in the UK programme for UNICA and there it achieved a Bronze Medal and an award for the Best Script. To put Kevin’s achievement into context, UNICA is an annual competition at which over 30 countries from around the world each present a programme of films. Watching all the programmes takes a week, with one and half days off for outings. Prizes are awarded by an international jury which includes professional filmmakers. The most interesting productions are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals. Very well done Kevin. This year the UNICA competition was held in Austria. Next year it will be in Slovakia. Definitely for the dedicated, the audience have the opportunity to meet some of the filmmakers and discuss the films shown. And for anyone who wants to know - UNICA stands for Union International du Cinema. The A stood for amateur, which is no longer mentioned! In the meantime, Ron has launched the new 4x4 Competition: see pages 4 & 5. Remember that it is not the winning that matters, but the opportunity to meet members of other clubs and see what they are producing. Please also see the item on page 10, asking you to check your contact details. We have noticed that sometimes the contact details in this magazine are different from those on the websites. Which is correct we do not know, but it would be worthwhile checking that the information every-where is current. To change your details on the North Thames Webpage you need to email Jan Watterson at [email protected]. It is that time of year when I start writing my Annual Report and I hope to see you at the North Thames Annual Competition and AGM on Sunday 24th November. The variety of entries bodes well for an entertaining day. It would also be good to hear your ideas and views during Members Voices - so please do come.

A succession of clubs have changed their name of late. One of them is Bourne End Video Makers (BEVM), previously Bourne End Video Camera Club (BEVCC). Secretary Derek Jarman tells us about his Club.

Bourne End Video Makers (BEVM), formerly Bourne End Video Camera Club (BEVCC) has had a presence in Bourne End since 1965 when it started as a cine club responding to filming requests from the Bourne End Community Association. Initial filming was mostly in and around Bourne End itself. Since that beginning it has developed into an amateur video-making club with members who like to make or assist in making videos for showing at internal or inter-club competitions or for community shows when the subject involves local events. This has been something of the Club’s speciality, with the Club regularly filming the Bourne End Carnivals and the local Dunkirk Veterans Associations Events. The Club has boasted a number of celebrated Presidents — Rupert Davies (the BBC’s Maigret) and Ernie Wise amongst them. An Annual Competition is held against Reading and Staines (for the Gateway Trophy), and the Club has competed regularly in the NTR Triangle Competition, having recently twice reached the Final. Recent events The Club provided several members to help film the Meadows School Centenary Fair held on Wooburn Green on 29th June and the event received a good turn out of local residents, parents and children to enter the Musical Statues Guinness World Record Attempt. Sadly the numbers attending didn't quite make the record but there was so much going on elsewhere on the Green that everyone enjoyed watching the other entertainment provided. The Club has just completed its Storyline film "On the Rails" which was about a couple where the husband was a model railway enthusiast and the wife decided to play a trick on him which unfortunately backfired. The filming took place in a member's garden and most of the members got involved in some way or other. We ran a successful Bring-and-Buy Event in June and one of the members hosted a summer Barbecue at his home which proved very successful and enjoyable, particularly the quiz that helped to keep members and their partners occupied. Our new Winter Programme is now available. Meetings are held in The Target Room at The Bourne End Community Centre on the first and third Wednesday of the Month from 7-30 pm to 10 pm. For contact details, see the Club Directory on p. 11, or the BEVM website — www. bevm.co.uk

GENERAL: 1 The competition is an annual event sponsored by the North Thames Region Council of the

IAC and its aim is to encourage clubs and their members to make movies and to foster friendly competition between club members in the Region.

2. The event takes the form of a knockout competition and the clubs taking part are combined into groups of four; by organised draw. The club drawn first in each group will host the round, and will arrange the venue and date of the presentation in agreement with the other clubs in its group, provided it is suitably located geographically. (For the Final Round, see Rules 17 to 19))

3 The NTR 4 x 4 Competition Officer will appoint a Referee to oversee each round of the competition. 4 Any financial losses or gains in the First and Semi-Final rounds may be shared by the competing clubs concerned.

5. IMPORTANT The following rules are primarily to ensure that some uniformity of procedure and agreed standard of entry is recognised by all clubs taking part. However, should your club have a specific problem in complying with any of the rules, please contact the NTR 4 x 4 Competition Officer IN ADVANCE OF YOUR COMPETITION to see if the problem can be resolved. Failure to do this could result in disqualification. The NTR 4 x 4 Competition Officer’s decision is final.

RULES for ENTRY: 6 Each club will enter a programme of one or more movies with the aim to provide an entertaining programme. THE TOTAL RUNNING TIME FOR EACH CLUB’S PROGRAMME MUST NOT EXCEED 25 MINUTES. 7 COPYRIGHT CLEARANCES FOR BOTH VISUALS AND SOUND USED IN THE MOVIES

ENTERED, IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MAKER. 8.ALL AWARD LEADERS MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE THE MOVIES ARE SHOWN TO THE

JUDGES. 9 All movies should have been completed during the two years prior to the competition and

must not have been entered in the NTR 4 x 4 Knock Out Competition previously. Clubs entering for the FIRST time may use their discretion in interpreting this clause, but thereafter should use current work. 10 All recognised formats of video are eligible. All competing clubs may pool their sound and projection resources for the presentation 11 All First Rounds should take place during the first 21 days of March. All Semi-Finals should take place during the last 21 days of. April. The Final should take place on a Saturday or Sunday during the 4 weekends after the first

Saturday in May.

The new 4 x 4 Competition for 2014 With the ailing Triangle Competition seemingly in its death throes, your Committee took the decision to put it to sleep, and replace it with a Competition that is intended to be more accessible, and to bring more people together. Triangle Competitions Officer Ron Jones agreed to run it, and here are the Rules in full.

12 Using the SAME programme UNALTERED, the Winning club and the Runner up from each of the First Four Rounds will take part in Two Semi-Final Rounds, as determined by the Draw.

The Two Winners and Two Runners up from the Semi-Finals will proceed to the Final. The Host Club will arrange the venue, date and time of their round. (See Rules 4 and 18) 13 Any complaint that could affect the result must be lodged with the Referee when the result of that round is declared. JUDGING: 14. Each round in the competition will be judged by one Judge except for the Final Round

which will be judged by Three Judges. 15 The NTR 4 x 4 Competition Officer will appoint the Judges for all the rounds. 16 Each Club’s programme will be judged on Entertainment Value,

The Judge will allocate points to each Club’s programme as follows:- 4 points to the Club placed first. 3 points to the Club placed second. 2 points to the Club placed third. 1 point to the Club placed fourth..

The judge/judges will hand his/their written marks to the Referee; after all four programmes have been screened. After the Referee has collected the marks, the judge/judges should give short comments on each of the programmes of movies shown. The Referee will disclose the marks awarded at the end of the Competition and the club with the highest total points will be declared the Winner. The Club with the Second Highest points will be declared the Runner Up. Should the Judges decision produce a Drawn result, The Referee will then ask them to confer and decide which of the drawing Clubs had presented the best Video. That Club would be declared the winner and the other drawing Club would be the Runner Up.

THE FINAL: 17. The judging and presentation of the movies from the Four finalist clubs will be under the

aegis of the North Thames Region Council who will also undertake publicity. 18. The winning club of the previous year will act as Host Club and arrange the venue, date

and time of the Final, as agreed with the NTR Council. The judges’ expenses, hire of the venue, tickets, programmes, refreshments, raffle prizes etc., will be the responsibility of the Host Club and should be covered by the admission charge and raffle income.

19. In the special case of the Final presentation, The North Thames Region Council will bear any loss. Any surplus to the account including the raffle and any other income accrued from the event will be shared equally between the Host Club and the North Thames

Region Council.

Please make every effort to support this new venture. The above Rules & an Entry Form were sent to the Competitions Officers of 20 Clubs in September. Only 16 can be accepted. Please ensure your Club is one of them, and get your Entry Form sent back to Ron Jones as soon as possible, so that the Draw can be made. Ron can be contacted by phone on 020 8886 7471.

And from your Editor: In recent weeks, I have tried to contact three NTR Clubs. For two of the Clubs, I e-mailed the address given by them in the Club Directory. NEITHER REPLIED. For the other, who didn’t have an e-mail address printed in the Club Directory, I went to its website, only then to discover that not only was the contact name given on the website incorrect, but the Club had changed its name! Clubs are regularly bemoaning losing members and not attracting new ones. IT IS ESSENTIAL OUR WEBSITES, CONTACT ADDRESSES & NEWSLETTER ENTRIES ARE AND ARE KEPT ACCURATE & UP-TO- DATE. Please check your entry opposite, and let me know of any alterations you would like making.

Do folk know whom to ring or e-mail if they want to contact your Club? Does our Head Office know whom to contact in your Club re inquiries? Do I, as the Regional Contact, know to whom to refer inquiries? Do we have the correct name for your Club? The answer to the above in most cases is “yes”, but I have come across several recently that are incorrect, and in one case the contact given hadn’t been a club member for several years! Please ensure you notify the IAC Head Office (address on p. 8) when any contact changes are made — they then amend their records and let me know. Just to be on the safe side, please e-mail, ring or send a letter to me asap with the current contact for your club, even if you think they are correct, so that I can amend my records straightaway if required. It may well save a lot of unnecessary hassle for everyone! (Penny’s e-mail address & phone number are on the front cover). Thanks for your help, Penny Love.
