A sense of calm and purpose has returned to our students and we all enjoyed the opportunity to come together as a school community and reflect on how truly lucky we are to live in a country where a collective purpose has faced a global crisis and overcome the odds. We started our assembly by reflecting on our four values as the unique drivers for our school. Some students struggled through level two at times. We always fell back on what values we needed to display to support our ourselves and our community; how our actions would define us post Covid. Needless to say, our students define who we are and our students have been a standout for how to keep safe, keep calm and carry on. Support staff week Last week we took time to celebrate our support staff. Our support staff work tirelessly for our community to keep us safe and supported as they manage the complex roles that make our place a special place. Enabling all of us do so much better through their support . Master Chef Special commendation to Mrs Allington who with her leadership and undying support for our students, managed to run a very successful Master Chef 2020. Such talent, such science in the food front to create real and authentic dishes.

Dear parents and whanau Welcome to week 10 This week we finally returned to a full semblance of normality with our first assembly and with daily fitness up and running. A sense of calm and purpose has returned to our students and we all enjoyed the opportunity to come together as a school community and reflect on how truly lucky we are to live in a country where a collective purpose has faced a global crisis and overcome the odds. Cont… Each team deserved to win. Rimu won the day. Knowledge a thon Each year Blockhouse Bay Intermediate holds one very successful fundraiser. Each year the proceeds from this are funneled directly back into significant projects that directly benefit our students. Over the past few years this has included funding our robotics programme, to ensure our students are well ahead in digital literacy. Helping to fund our turf and create a legacy for future generations, and last year funding the seats on our covered deck. As part of our ongoing development of our outside spaces, we are in the process of designing and developing a quiet outside garden space for students. This space sits between the library, the music room and dance and drama. The plan is to make a green and quiet place for the library to spill out to and for lunch time concerts, with seating for many and established trees to sit under or to work within the medicinal garden. This is a tranquil place of learning, reflection and quiet within a busy and dynamic school. Once again, we are going for something special and wish to fundraise to support the planting of this space. Each year our students have benefited from the generosity of their peers and this year will be no different, as we work to create a special place for our students today and for future generations. New car park As a growing school, we are in need of extra parking spaces, which is not nearly as exciting as a new space for students. The new staff carpark will be developed behind the dental clinic and beside the turf. This area will be fenced off and provide an additional twenty spaces for staff and community events. Freeing up much needed space for visitors in our main carpark . Water will be turned off over the weekend To help conserve water, we will be turning the school water supply off over every weekend. If you are planning on visiting the school over the weekend, please bring a water bottle.

40 Hour Famine 2020 Over the weekend of 5th-7th June, many Blockhouse Bay Intermediate Students took part in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine; raising life-changing money for the families and children of Malawi affected by climate change. Despite the challenges we have all faced over the last few months, physical distancing was no match for awesome, inspiring young Kiwis like you. Across the country, Kiwis participated in mufti days, sausage sizzles, bake-sales, carnivals and so much more! We were inspired by some crazy and brilliant fundraising ideas; from walking 40km in 40 hours to a 24-hour lock-in sleepover.

Thank you to our community and our families for your generosity! As a school we have fundraised over $10,000 for the people in Malawi! The funds you have raised will provide communities in Malawi with sustainable farming tools like seeds, watering systems and goats. Student Achievements

Troy Maka Room 11 has received a Gold Heart Scholarship for his determination and talent in shot put and discus. The scholarships are awarded to those who have demonstrated excellence in their field and aim to help them reach their full potential.

Troy is currently the Youth World Record Discus holder for 11-year-olds and the Athletics Auckland Record Holder in discus for ages 10 and 11. In 2018, he won the Arahoe Primary School Sportsman award.

This year’s funding will be used to cover the cost of training gear, equipment, and club fees. Early next year, he aims to compete in the Auckland Athletics Championships, alongside siblings Percy and Rina. Well done.

YEAR 8 OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMP FUNDRAISING Final payment for camp is Friday 23 October. A non-fundable cost of $100 will be charged if there is a change of heart. WEEK 4 Camp 1: Monday 2nd - Friday 6th November (Matai, Totara, Nikau) WEEK 5 Camp 2: Monday 9th - Friday 13th November (Miro, Rimu, Kowhai) FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY

• The fundraising finishes on Thursday 2 July (four weeks of selling only).

• If you wish for the opportunity to sell during the school holidays please contact the school office to arrange

• Reminder that all money for chocolates sold must be returned, before new boxes can be issued • A note must be brought to school if requesting more than one box • Chocolate distribution will be (Tue, Thu, Fri from 2 to 3pm)

To offset the costs of our 2020 camp, we are pleased to offer again an opportunity to reduce the cost of camp to just $10 per student. All Year Eight students will have the opportunity to sell boxes of Cadbury chocolate bars through an organised fundraising venture. This is a very popular product bought out by Cadbury, which sells extremely well! This requires a lot of coordination by our staff at school, and we would appreciate your cooperation in following the guidelines that see this complex operation run smoothly. Each box is worth $60.00: In conjunction with the company who provides the boxes of chocolates, an agreement has been reached that 40% ($24.00) of the proceeds raised per box of chocolates collected goes directly towards offsetting the cost of the camp for the individual who sold the items. (Student needs to sell 15 boxes of chocolate bars. This will cover $360 for the camp leaving only $10.00 to pay for camp) All monies are collected in at school, where proceeds raised and returned are recorded. Student’s individual totals are recorded. Of course students do not have to sell chocolates or fundraise if parents prefer to pay the full cost of $370.00 (subject to final figures attending camp) instead. The amount of boxes sold individually will determine, if any, the individual amount left to pay in meeting the total cost of camp for each individual student. COMMUNITY NOTICES

Learn to sail at French Bay Yacht Club Did you know that French Bay Yacht Club in Titirangi has five of these cool boats in its shed, available for our kids to get into and learn to sail in at very low cost? Sailing is a sport for life that teaches independence, resourcefulness and water skills, and your children can enjoy the benefits of this wonderful activity right here in Titirangi at French Bay Yacht Club. French Bay’s coaches recommend that sailors start at between 9 and 14 years old, so long as they can swim 50m (with a life jacket). All equipment is provided, and sailing takes place on weekends at high tide. As children develop their skills they have the option of progressing to racing and different types of boats - like these skiffs. Spaces will fill up before winter finishes, so please pre-register your details at www.frenchbay.org.nz
