KPPS NEWS
This term we have been learning about the people in our community who
help to meet our needs and keep us safe.
In week 8 we had a visit from the firefighters. They showed us their
fire truck, uniforms and some of the tools they use. The firefighters
talked to us about what to do if there is a fire. We need to…
Get down low and go, go, go!
When they were leaving they put the siren on for us. It was very
exciting. After they left we wrote a recount about the visit.
‘Today the firefighters came to school. I was excited. I sat in a truck!’
-Daniella-
‘Today the firefighters came to show us to be safe around fire so we
don’t get burnt.’ -Katelin- By U5
Literacy and Language Levels Over the last two weeks the Primary and Middle Years teams have been
trained by Vicky Mangas (Our English as an Additional Dialect (EALD)
teacher) on how to assign a Literacy and Language Level to your child’s
writing. The information gathered from the student’s writing samples is then
used to guide future teaching of writing skills.
The Early Years team were trained in using the Literacy and Language
Levels last year and have assigned a level to the EY student’s writing/oral
language for the second time. The writing data is being electronically stored
in MARKiT which is allowing us to map the development of students’ writing
from Foundation to Year 7.
Effective reading and writing strategies
On Saturday a team of 12 teachers attended a conference on Effective
reading and writing strategies with Sheena Cameron and Louise
Dempsey. Everyone came away with some very practical ideas for their
literacy blocks.

BEST WISHES This week we say farewell to Kelly Bonaguro who hopefully has a couple of weeks rest
before the birth of her fourth child. Kelly has been a terrific member of our teaching
team working in a number of our early years classrooms. We have appreciated her
flexibility, willingness to learn, caring nature and most importantly the way she has
collaborated with the rest of the team. We hope to see Kelly back at KPPS in the future
and certainly expect a visit or two with her new child in a few weeks. The students (and
mums) in U1 will be waiting!
STAFFING UPDATE Peter Georgeopoulos will be on leave for the first four weeks of term three enjoying
some warmer weather in the northern hemisphere. Nicola Holmes will be teaching P4 students.
I will be on leave for the first five weeks of term three primarily to attend a conference in Slovenia. Karen will continue to ensure the school runs smoothly and Sandra Gibbons will be taking on the deputy responsibilities. Elaine Coleman will be teaching in Room 11 Wednesday – Friday.
INTERVIEWS Student / Parent / Teacher interview forms have been sent home and are due back this week on Friday 4th July. Interviews will be held on Tuesday 5th August and Wednesday 6th August, 3.30-8.00pm. Slips with interview times will be returned to parents on Wednesday 23rd July (week 1, term 3).
LOOKING GOOD! A massive thankyou to Maria Gianquitto for organising a large selection of very
expensive, nearly new furniture to brighten our school. Our meeting rooms
and flexible learning areas now boast some very expensive corporate
furniture. Once again, our school is evolving and changing to ensure the best
learning environment for our students.

LC VISITOR On Wednesday morning in Week 7 the Learning Centre was visited
by a very special person. Laurence Byrne, a former student of
Kidman Park Primary School, came to speak to the students about
being a writer. Laurence started writing stories when he was at
KPPS and his latest book “My First Year Out” is now available on
Amazon. Laurence answered our questions about being a writer
using his speech output device and shared some of his latest story.
He also allowed Barb to read a book he wrote when he was at KPPS
called “The Pirate and the Golden Fish”. It was an inspirational visit!

This is blu-E and his mates–
Belinda the bug, Brad the blue
whale, Bryan the baboon and
Bel the bat.
Bel is the most brilliant in the branch but likes black to be in
Brisbane. She likes to help Brad get bad.
Blu-e sells bags of beans on the
beach.
Brad and the little blue
tongue lizards play with the big black birds.
Blu-e assists Bryan the bat in the burrow by
arranging the books backs. Blast Blu-e you could
wing book bags admired Belinda.
Blu-e is also head boss of the Brother Beach.
The blue lizard is a beach watcher and the brave
gecko body boards.
One beautiful day in Brisbane, a new baboon called Baleen arrived at
the beach. Baleen was a butcher. But Baleen was just beginning and
his big burrow began to fall all over the beautiful beach. Baleen was
overwhelmed. Blu-e bailed out of the conversation.
Then Blu-e saw a bald eagle. He offered to help
Baleen get back. Blu-e went into burrows.
With all his blowing in the burrow, Baleen had
time to join the other buddies in the burrows. That’s
Baleen playing with the balloon! After, the beach enjoyed a
big balloon. They ate butter, beetroot and Basil. Everyone
was brilliant.
What about you, are you beginning

こんにちはKonnichiwa,
During the last few weeks of term almost all children are practising some sentences telling each other some of the places they go on different days of the week. For example: Getsuyōbi ni gakkō ni ikimasu – I go to school on Monday.
Ask them to show you how clever they are at speaking in Nihongo! P4 have been extremely lucky to receive postcards from some Japanese high school students. These students from Iwate prefecture (one of the regions hit quite severely by the tsunami in 2011) wanted to practise writing addresses in the English style as part of their English lessons. The students in P4 were really excited about this and have almost finished writing responses. This has been good practise for them in not only letter writing but also using simple, correct English so that second language learners can understand them. We’ve also used some Japanese, asking each student two questions. We all hope that we get replies! Please pop in and see me if you want to find out more about this term’s work, our Japanese programme, second language learning or your child’s progress. I look forward to meeting you.

s This term during our weekly Middle Years Focus
Meetings we have been discussing the
importance of having a good understanding of
how to keep your self safe when online.
The first session we shared ideas about what are
the potential hazards online. It was alarming to
see how many ways we can put ourselves at
risk when we are online. Some of the risk factors
include people accessing our private
information, unwanted attention from
inappropriate people and the alarming fact
that there are people trying to lure us into
dangerous situations.
The second session we focussed our attention
on ways we can keep ourselves safe, we
developed an excellent list of ideas that can
assist us in using the net in a safe and secure
way. We decided it was a good idea to use a
nickname instead of our real name, never take
photos of ourselves in school or sport uniform as
this can alert people to our whereabouts on a
daily basis and we also agreed it was a good
idea to keep our passwords private except
from our parents/caregivers.

The third session we used the ideas we
gathered the previous week and surveyed the
three Middle Years classes to see how many of
the ‘stay safe ideas’ we actually used. Here are
the results.
The results show that although there is room for
improvement in all areas, it is pleasing to see 96%
of our Middle Years students already keep
passwords safe and 92% of our Middle Years
students keep their location private when using
social media.
We encourage families to discuss Cyber Safety to
ensure all of the children at Kidman Park Primary
School are not only savvy internet users but also
safe internet users. By P1

This term, room 7 have been doing research on an Australian
animal that’s at the zoo. We got the information mostly on the
Adelaide zoo website. There was a variety of animals chosen; only
2 people were able to research using the same animal.
Each student did an oral presentation on their animal. One of the
research information tasks was to find out if the animal was
endangered followed by was it worth saving and why? Some of
the reasons we discovered why animals were worth saving
include: they keep places clean, kill over populating animals and
pests and some weren’t worth saving at all.
Finally, as a part of our “taking action” we decided to adopt a
bilby. The bilby is endangered, that’s why where sponsoring one.
Animal adaption So as you may have read earlier or heard of before, we are
sponsoring a bilby because they are endangered. To do this we
need to raise over $100, which is where you can send your kids
along with 1 or 2 dollars to guess how many lollies are in the jar. If
you get the closest or exact, you win the WHOLE JAR! By the way
don’t get too excited the lollies are healthy.
2014 Zoo Snooze Room 7 had a brilliant time at the zoo snooze this year. When we
were at the zoo we got to see our animal with our own eyes. We
stayed in the Education Centre.
We went to the Zoo by bus and set off at 11:00. Of course the
time went fast so it felt like 3 hours. We went back to school at
10:00 the next day and some people were picked up from school.
We got back to school and had barely any energy left.
When we got back some people hadn’t finished their animal
research so we finished them off.

What is Bullying? Bullying is when anyone uses their words or actions to hurt, shame, embarrass or take advantage of someone else on purpose. Bullying behaviour can be physical, verbal, emotional, sexual or social (done by a group). It includes harassing someone using technology, such as Facebook, texting, webmail, video or photos. KEY THINGS TO KNOW: Anyone can behave in a bullying way. Young people who bully can be any age, gender or
culture or from any kind of family situation.
Some children or young people don’t realise that what they’re doing is bullying. They may just be copying what they’ve seen others do to get what they want.
Bullying is too important to ignore because it hurts others, sometimes with serious and long lasting effects. People’s lives can be very badly affected by bullying.
A young person may bully occasionally, or a lot, but whatever kind of bullying it is, and whatever is that caused it, it is never ok.
Young people who bully are often very badly affected too. They can find it hard to make real friends, often get in trouble, feel isolated and disliked, and struggle to fit in and achieve well.
With support, young people can learn to stop bullying, and get back on the right track.
Research tells us that usually those who bully will have some of the following characteristics: Can be very frustrated when things don’t go their way
Have a problem managing their anger
May be very challenging to adults at times
Can get very anxious and agitated
Find it difficult to communicate or express themselves
May behave aggressively at times
Like to be in control of things
Find it hard to make real friends easily or to get along with others
Don’t consider the feelings of others very much
May find it hard to feel empathy or compassion for people in distress
Can get very jealous of others
Have probably been bullied themselves
Tend to blame others for things and avoid taking responsibility for their own actions
May come from a family where people bully each other, or bully other people.
Helping your child to get back on track , and stop bullying, will take time.
13
What is Bullying?
Helping your child to get back on the right track.
There’s a lot that parents and other caring adults can do to help their young person
stop bullying. It helps if they can team up and agree on the steps to take.
Find out the facts.
It can be hard to find out the whole story, but find out what you can. Remember that
different people will see things in different ways.
Who was involved? Who was hurt? If it was outside of your home, what action was
taken by any adults?
Ask your child and ask others as well, to get a range of perspectives.
Sit down and have a good talk with your child.
Check they understand that other people think they are bullying.
Don’t let the incident seem unimportant.
Check they understand what bullying is, and the sorts of things it includes.
Ask why they have bullied others and how often it’s happened.
Check that they realise what harm they’ve been doing.
See if any of their friends are also bullying.
Ask if they’ve been bullied themselves.
See how they’re thinking and feeling about themselves.
Let them know that bullying hurts everyone - the person being bullied, themselves,
their class, team or group of friends, and you as a family.
Reassure your child that you love them, even though you don’t like or accept their bullying behaviour. Tell them that they have your support to sort this bullying problem
out. Ask how they think you could help them. Let them know you think they can learn to stop bullying, how to
get along with others better and how to make real friends. If they let you know about an issue that’s linked to the bullying,
see if you can do something about it.
