CLIPSAL 500 EXCURSION On 27th February the Middle Years classes went to the Clipsal 500 for an
excursion. After arriving by bus in the morning we entered by gate 1. First we
went to the Armour All show. Then we went to the Tractor Pull section but
there was no action so we moved on. Then we went to Route 66, V8 Supercar
Paddock, Go Pro Traction Zone, Australian Defence Force and finally we
stopped in gold section track side and watched the race. Yianni
Our group went to get signatures and I got about 8 signatures from great
drivers such as David Reynolds, David Wall, Fabian Coulthard and heaps more.
Our group also went to the concert where The Sheppards and Potbeleez
performed. When the Potbeleez were performing one guy jumped off the
stage and I got to touch his hand. Olivia
Our group’s last stop was at Route 66 where there were luxurious muscle cars.
I loved the muscle cars because they were fascinating. I think Clipsal 500 was
suitable for all ages but you might need ear plugs. Ellie

Congratulations to Mike Paluszkiewicz and Peter Georgeopoulos for being nominated in the ‘SA Excellence in Public
Education awards’. Over the years we have had a number of our staff nominated in these awards, well done everyone!!
“Mike is an outstanding teacher he engages his students in learning by nurturing their development as independent learners and members of the wider community. He is creative and clever in engaging children to try new tasks and to grow into active learners. His calm approach and comfort with students discovering natural consequences of their actions has increased confidence and the independence of many students. Our school community are grateful to have Mike work with our students. Thank you.”
“Peter is a class teacher and the wellbeing coordinator at our school. Over many years I have observed him support and enable children who face challenges in the school. My son lives with ASD and he has been completely supportive of his individual learning style and modifies the curriculum so he is happy, successful and is motivated and able to learn. He is a champion for
inclusion in the school and often has many children with complex needs in his class and still has 28 pupils. He has created an environment where all children thrive. He also supports other teachers to better understand the importance of social and emotional wellbeing as a foundation for all children's learning. He deserves to be recognised for his efforts.”

This year students in years 3, 5 & 7 will participate in the national tests during week three of term 2 (13th -15th May)
We hope that most of our students will participate in the tests but, we know that some families have different beliefs about the tests. We also acknowledge that for some students it can be a traumatic experience that actually hinders their learning.
Students may be withdrawn from some or the entire testing program by their parent/caregiver. This is a matter for consideration by individual families in consultation with staff members. Withdrawals are intended to address issues like religious beliefs and philosophical objections. To discuss withdrawing your child please contact Karen Duval (8353 2444 or
[email protected]) before the end of this term.

This term U1 and U2 have been studying water and its impact on human life.
Students were encouraged to consider others who don't have access to clean water so they decided to raise money by collecting and recycling containers that they collected from all classes over a two week period.
The students raised $23. This money will be forwarded to World Vision to be put towards one of their water projects in a third world country. Thank you to all the classes and staff for helping us to raise the money. U1 and U2

“2014 SUPERATHON - Friday 11th April, put the date in your diary now!”
こんにちはKonnichiwa,
Did you know that this year Year 3-7 students will be using Edmodo (www.edmodo.com) in Japanese? Edmodo is a free and secure learning network for teachers, students, and schools. It provides a safe way for teachers and students to connect, share content, access homework, participate in discussions and receive class information. Unlike other social networks, such as Facebook, Edmodo is a tool strictly for educational purposes and we will be enforcing the following guidelines:
1. Edmodo does not allow private student-to-student messaging - the site will be used to discuss school-related content only, and the teacher will monitor all Edmodo activity No put-downs or sarcasm toward another’s ideas. All school rules and consequences related to harassment apply (I moderate every post by all students)
Students who violate these guidelines will face consequences at school and/or face losing the privilege of using Edmodo. Edmodo is accessible to Teachers, Students and Parents at any time on any device through the Web. If you wish to follow your child’s account to stay up to date on class activities and grades, you can by signing up for a Parent Account. Ask your child to show you how! Once your account is created, Parent Accounts will give you a dashboard like view of your child’s activities but no actions or communication can be taken in this account. Note: with one single parent account you are able to add multiple children and will not need to create any other parent account moving forward! Here is my home page so you know what Edmodo
looks like. I have checked then allowed each of the posts you see on the page. Teaching the students how to keep safe and sensible on the internet is one of the benefits of using Edmodo. If you did not sign and return your child’s permission to use Edmodo form earlier this term it would be great if you could so that we can all work together creating a great year of exciting learning, incorporating the use of technology into Japanese. If you have any questions about Edmodo please pop in to the Japanese classroom to chat or contact me at [email protected]

SYDNEY ARTs CONFERENCE
Nihongo News
On 12th March to 14th March, 2014, I attended a conference in Sydney led by Linda
Lorenza, Senior Project Officer, The ARTS for ACARA Australian Curriculum, Assessment
and Reporting Authority. There were two generalist teacher representatives (R-2 and 4
-6), each from Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane. Our task was to unpack each
of the bands in the five areas of The Arts, Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, Media Studies and
Music in the Primary Years and identify where progression could be made in year levels
in relation to the students we currently teach.
This was a fantastic experience for me as a generalist teacher as I was able to examine
and question The Arts documents in a unique collaborative group. Not only did we
have different syllabuses being used from state to state we also had representatives
from Catholic Education and our discussions were richly rewarding in reaffirming that
although there were so many different state expectations we were already delivering a
curriculum that was closely matching the Australian Curriculum. We discussed how The Arts is integrated across Curriculum
Areas and shared our experiences of doing this successfully. A website to explore: http://www.incredibox.com/

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY 2014
13
FIRES
On Friday 28th February we had Clean Up Australia Day. P1 did a snap shot of
the litter collected on the day and made a graph comparing the rubbish
collected in 2013.
This was presented at
assembly.
We found out that more litter
was collected in 2013 but a
greater variety of litter types
was found in 2014. Many
more foil wrappings and ice
block sticks were collected this
year and these need to be
our target to reduce for 2014.
The graph is on display in the
Resource Centre.
On the 17th of March Mr Evans from the
Metropolitan Fire Department came to
Room 10 to talk to us about being safe in
fires.
He talked about the causes of house and
outdoor fires. He also showed us a video
about a modern bedroom and a 1950s
bedroom. They set them both on fire and
waited 3 minutes for the modern bedroom
and 32 minutes for the 1950s bedroom.
The results were the modern bedroom was
covered with smoke and destroyed but the
1950s bedroom only had a small fire and
smoke. This is because today we use lots of
new materials like plastics. These are very
flammable.
We enjoyed the presentation because we learnt important things,
like how to make a fire plan and to call 000 in an emergency.
