From the Principal
The last five weeks whilst I have been Principal of this
lovely school have certainly gone very quickly. There has
been a lot happening, with two major highlights being the
faction athletics carnival and the secondary students
Canberra tour. I would like to take this opportunity to
thank staff, community and students for welcoming me
back so warmly and for the support that has been provided
to me – it is greatly appreciated. A special thank you to the
amazing staff at our school who constantly go above and beyond what could
be expected from them to ensure a solid educational program for our students.
Canberra Camp
This is one example of significant additional time and effort put in by staff. Prior to such a tour happening, there is a
mountain of preparatory work that needs to be done. The bulk of this was done by Mr Hoffman and Mrs
Chittleborough with many hours of support from others. Thank you to the huge number of parents that got behind
this great initiative and spent countless hours fundraising for this venture – what a great variety of fundraising
activities were held. And then there was the camp! From all accounts, our students had experiences and adventures
that they will remember for a long time – there is something about going away as a school group on camp. There
were very happy and tired students that hopped off the plane that Friday night – and an extremely tired Mr Batt, Mrs
Chadwick and Mr Hoffman. Sincere appreciation for the voluntary long hours staff, from us all.
Athletics Carnival
Day 1 of the Athletics Carnival was conducted on Friday 2 September and
Day 2 on Friday 16 September. Again, there were many additional hours
contributed by staff, particularly Mr Chavez, to make this a successful two
day event. Of course this would not have been possible without the great
sportsmanship of our students and the huge list of parent volunteers that
assisted us – some graciously taking on responsibilities at very short notice.
Congratulations to the students who received individual medallions.
The interschool athletics carnival is being held in Ravensthorpe on Friday,
28 October. More details to follow.
Book Fair
Book Fair at BDHS will be running from Week 3
Monday 24 – Thursday 27 October 2016 from 8.30am –
3.30pm (including Open Classrooms on Tuesday 25
October 5.00pm-6.30pm).
There will be a selection of books and items on display
in the library for purchase. Credit card facilities are
available. Children are able to purchase items at lunch
and after school.
Please be advised that during Book Fair week your child will be completing a wish list during class. The wish list is intended to provide parents with
guidance to the items that their child would like to
purchase. It is completed with no expectations of
purchase, which is communicated to the students. We
also have novelty items available for purchase as a lower
cost option.
Mrs Flic (Felicity Hughes Library Officer)
Football
A number of our students
represented Boddington Football
Club and took out the C Grade
premiership for the Upper Great
Southern. Congratulations and well
done –I am told it has been a 47 year wait.
Vi Barham Awards
Each year the top academic students in the Narrogin
Schools Network and surrounding networks are
nominated for the Vi Barham award. This is an annual
award that is named in honour of Mrs Vi Barham
who worked for a long period of time at what is now
known as the Local Area Office Narrogin. There were
approximately thirty students from the region who
were selected for further testing. Congratulations to
Juniper, Hasya and Krosby for being selected to
represent our school. From the testing results, 10
students will then be selected to go to interview with
one final winner. Good luck Hasya, Juniper and
Krosby –I hope that you all ‘get through’ to interview.
Classroom and Playground Behaviour Processes
Over the past few weeks the staff have been working
together to further consolidate the processes for our
five step classroom behaviour management plan. We
have also been working on a three step process for
the playground so that we are able to better monitor
students’ behaviour whilst at recess and lunch. This
will be trialled during Term 4 and adjustments made
as needed. We as a school promote an educative
approach rather than a punitive/reactionary approach
with clear processes and guidelines for students who
are not displaying appropriate behaviour. For those
students not displaying appropriate behaviour in the
playground the process will be:
Step 1 – Either walk with the teacher or sit out of play
in view of the duty teacher.
Step 2 - 10 minutes rubbish collection
Step 3 - Office referral with possible lunchtime
detention.
Serious inappropriate behaviours will be referred directly
to administration.
We are confident that the processes we are trialling will
support us to better monitor playground behaviours. We
will be working on implementing rewards for those
students who consistently make good choices whilst at
recess and lunch.
First Day Next Term
I wish everyone a safe and
refreshing holiday. The first
day back next term for
students will be Monday 10
October. This will not be a
Kindergarten Day.

We greatly appreciate your
efforts Mr Hoffman.
Mrs Chadwick, Mr Batt
and Mr Hoffman
Thank you from the whole
school community for your
huge investment of time and
energy to accompany our

High School Canberra Tour—By Jason Hoffman
The arrival of 34 very tired students and three staff at Perth airport on Friday night signalled the end of our Tour of Canberra. Over the previous five days we had been from Perth to Sydney to Canberra to Perth and were really starting to feel the effects of all the travel. On the first day we flew into Sydney at 6:35am and were taken to Bondi Beach for breakfast. From there we drove into the heart of Sydney, walked half way across the bridge and then went back to see the sights of the Sydney Opera House. Then it was back on the bus and a quick trip to Darling Harbour for lunch - Subway and Starbucks were a big hit. From there it was back on the bus for the five-hour trip to Canberra. We finally arrived at what would be home for the next four days at around 7:00pm. Once we were fed and organised we were asleep very quickly.
The next day saw us rise early for the trip into Parliament House. The scale of the building and the impressiveness of the two chambers overwhelmed many of the students. From Parliament house it was onto the National Capital Exhibition where we learnt about the history of Canberra and ‘Walt and Marion Griffin’, apparently ‘Burley’ was not part of his original name! Next was the National Gallery of Australia where we were shown some of the more important pieces held by the gallery. From there it was onto the Australian Institute of Sport. Where, according to the girls, one of the highlights was watching the Australian men’s gymnastics team train. After the AIS it was back to
camp for some well-earned rest.
Day 3 started with a tour of the Royal Australian Mint, where we were shown how Australia’s coins are designed and made, and then we got the opportunity to make our own. After that it was onto the High Court of Australia. Here we were shown the three courtrooms and were told the history and powers of the High Court. Next was the National Portrait Gallery where we were shown and talked through some of the more interesting portraits in the gallery. The group I was in saw Nick Cave, Capt James Cook, Senator Bob Brown and finally Deborah Mailman. After we left the gallery we went to Old Parliament House where we were taught about the Australian preferential voting system. After that it was back to camp for dinner.
Next morning was the one that many students had been waiting for, it was off to the Australian War Memorial. It began with a tour of the artefacts held by the memorial and then we got an opportunity to find the names of relatives that were on the role of honour. The wreath laying service was next where a commemorative wreath was laid on the tomb of the unknown soldier. Following this we spent time talking to ‘Jack’ an ex service man who told us about his service in the Vietnam War and Malayan Emergency. Jack’s biggest response was when he wished the Western Bulldogs luck over the West Coast Eagles!

The Centre
Located on Pollard Street, the Boddington Early
Learning Centre is in close proximity to the
School. The Centre is a modern facility that was
purpose built, it boasts a large outdoor area
allowing children to explore and interact with
their friends and make use of the extensive
equipment available. Inside the centre has a
partial open plan feel allowing for sibling
interaction and inter-age play. Carers keep the
Centre’s displays constantly updated so that
families can see what the children have been
working on during the week.

The National Museum of Australia was our next stop. We saw Pharlap’s heart, and one of the first FJ Holden’s made. A few of the tour participants actually knew what the big rusty ‘sunshine harvester’ was. From there it was on to Government House. We were introduced to the house and the history and position of the Governor General. We were then shown around the public areas of the house and the 52 draw jewellery box. That was the end of Day 3 and a few tried to watch the first quarter of the West Coast / Bulldogs game but didn’t last long.
Friday was our last day. We rose early to pack the bus and made our way to the Tidbinbilla Deep Space Complex where we watched a somewhat live launch from Florida (technical issues aside). We then learnt about what it takes to be able to communicate with a satellite that is now 18.8 billion kilometres away and travelling at 30 kilometres a second. From there it was off to our last stop before the airport, the National Zoo and Aquarium.
You can probably understand why after all that why we were a little tired when we returned home.
We acknowledge the Federal Government’s PACER program which subsidised a significant portion of the cost of the tour.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of
all young Australians being able to visit the national capital
as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist
families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian
Government contributed funding of $240 per student
under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program
towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the
school upon completion of the excursion.
