NEWSLETTER NO 20 2016 30 JUNE 2016
Dear Lord, As this term draws to a close,
may we finish off in style.
Conscious that with others we are responsible for seeing
our duties through with humour and efficiency. Amen.
Dear Parents As second Term draws to a close it is a good time to re-visit our goals and outcomes for the second half of the year. Each child should have been developing sound study habits and focussing on the outcomes that they would like to achieve for Semester 2. We look forward to seeing all of the children resuming on TUESDAY 19th JULY at 8:20am. Accompanying today’s newsletter is:
Term 3 Dates for 2016. For those parents who were unable to attend the Report Interview Day on Monday, they are welcome to book an appointment with their child’s classroom teachers to discuss their child’s progress. Parents should note that school commences on Tuesday 19th July at 8:20am and concludes on Thursday 22nd September. NAIDOC WEEK This week is NAIDOC Week at St Andrew’s. NAIDOC week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. This week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support our local Aboriginal community. STAFFING Our love and best wishes are extended to Mrs Bianca Whitaker and Mrs Brooke Allen for all of their effort and wonderful teaching in Kindergarten Blue and Year One respectively. We wish them every happiness for the future. We welcome back Sarah Zjacic and Danielle Wildman for the commencement of Semester 2. TERM 3 DATES The Term 3 Planner has been sent home to each family today. Please note that the dates are correct at the time of printing this newsletter and we will attempt to avoid changes, if possible. Any alterations will be notified to parents via the school newsletter. ASSESSMENTS IN TERM 3 Parents should be aware of the following Assessments in Term 3. Monday 1st August Year 5 Archbishop’s Religious Assessment. Monday 8th August Year 3 Archbishop’s Religious Assessment. PUPIL FREE DAY – REPORTING A sincere thank you is extended to those parents who have contacted the school office with regards to the reporting day which was held on Monday 27th June. The day was greatly received and the parents, in general, appreciated the opportunity for an interview with the child’s classroom teacher and the chance for interviews throughout the day rather than in the evening.

FREE DRESS DAY – TOMORROW – Friday 1st July The children will be able to wear pyjamas (and dressing gowns) for a gold coin donation on the last day of Term, Friday 1st July. Children are not allowed to wear thongs or non-supportive shoes. e.g. Slippers. Sand shoes are recommended. The money raised will be donated to LifeLink and other Catholic charities. CONGRATULATIONS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM Congratulations are extended to our Interschool Cross Country Team that achieved excellent results at Mawson Park Reserve last Friday. We finished an amazing 3rd place in our division. Again, a number of children performed at their personal best and we congratulate them on this achievement. Well done to all involved and to Mrs Peacham for her co-ordination of the team. P & F WINE AND CHEESE NIGHT What an outstanding success the P & F Wine and Cheese night was last Friday night. It was wonderful to see so many parents and staff enjoying the festivities of the event. If you were unable to attend or missed out on tickets may I personally recommend that you put this event in your diaries early, the next time that it is held! God bless you.
SAM FONTAINE Principal

We would love every child to dress up from Playgroup up to Year 6. There will be a prize given to the most creative costumes in each class and if you have the book from which your character comes from please bring it along. Some suggestions: Possum Magic, Wombat Stew, Koala Loo, famous historical/sporting Australians eg; Ned Kelly or even a convict! However, you may wish to just dress up as your favourite character from a book. INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to all of our long distance runners! We had a great day at the Interschool Cross Country Carnival on Friday June 24th at Mawson Park, Hillarys. Our students showed determination, perseverance and good sportsmanship. What a fantastic result as well. We came 3rd in Division B. St Luke's came first, followed by LJBC. Well done to all of you. P&F NEWS P&F AFL MARGIN LOTTERY P&F AFL Margin Lottery Dockers' fans won't be happy with their team's 48 point loss to the Magpies last weekend. But Vanessa Neave will surely have a smile on her face as the winner of the $10 prize. Congrats Vanessa! This weekend sees the Eagles take on Essendon in what should be an easy win for the home side. WINE AND CHEESE NIGHT Last Friday the P&F had a very successful Wine & Cheese night which was held in the school hall. Sally Cole, Mel Leedham, Jen Lynch and Vanessa Neave were kept busy serving 8 wines and 7 cheeses, before ending the evening with chocolate! A special thank you to all our volunteers on the night who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the night went smoothly. With your support we hope to be able to have another evening next year. Thanks to all the staff and parents who came along and had a fun evening. Congratulations to Sheila Vickery, Disa Shallue and Paula who won the various raffles on the night. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for our next parent event. SPORTING SCHOOLS PROGRAM The Term 2 Sporting Schools Program has finished. 20 children enjoyed 4 weeks of after school sport introducing them to the fantastic Olympic sport of hockey. Keep an eye out for next Term's Sporting Schools note when it comes home. Thanks to all the children who had great fun each week, and also to Disa Shallue, who was the parent supervisor each week.
YEAR 4B The Life Ed Van came to St Andrew’s CPS last week to teach our children a variety of Health based
activities. Year 4 Blue were excited to participate in the ‘All Systems Go’ learning module. We learnt a
lot about the Human Body. Here are some things we learnt:
Roisin: I liked the sparkly lights.
Sharni: The small intestine is really long but really skinny and the big intestine really small but
really thick.
Noah: You should always eat healthy food before junk food.
Isabel: You should always drink water every day.
Kai: The brain shoots electricity to remember things.
Macy: There is a lot of sugar in Coke.
Tamsin: That the heart pumps blood around the body.
Oliver: The lungs transfer the oxygen into the blood cells to travel around the body.
Asha: There are two types of blood cells, red blood cells and white blood cells.
Martin: The stomach grinds all the food that you eat.
James: The heart pumps faster when you are scared or worried.
Hayley: You have veins everywhere except your fingernails, toenails and hair.
Katie: Energy drinks gives you energy for a short time but if you eat healthy the energy will
last hours and hours.
Trinity: The kidneys are at the back of your body.
Grace O: Physical education helps your body even though its hard work.
Grace W: You should at least drink 8 glasses of water a day because it keeps you hydrated.
Jacinta: Don’t breathe in second hand smoke because the chemicals can destroy your lungs.
Cassie: Your brain tells your body what to do.
Jeswin: The kidney stores the water and turns it into urine.
Samuel: The white blood cells fight off the germs and the red blood cells move the oxygen.
Krystal: You breathe in oxygen and breathe out Carbon Dioxide.
