SNGC’s companies have taken part in the tenth Chinese International Exhibition on the Nuclear Power Industry (CIENPI), held in Shanghai between May 23rd and 25th, with a stand inside the national Spanish Nuclear Industry pavilion coordinated by SNGC and Foro and supported by ICEX.

The companies belonging to SNGC (Spanish Nuclear Group for Cooperation) – ENUSA, ENSA and Ringo Válvulas – participated in the joint pavilion.

Considered one of the most important nuclear fairs held in China, CIENPI is a point of reference for companies and professionals in the sector.

The Spanish nuclear industry has been consolidating its presence at this fair since 2005.

The fair was attended by almost 100 overseas corporations among a total of 170 companies and research institutes from 17 countries and regions in Asia, Europe and America.

There were also national pavilions representing Russia, France and the United Kingdom.

Following the slowdown caused by Fukushima, the approval of the medium- and long-term Nuclear Plan and the Nuclear Safety Plan has now given way to a recovery of nuclear development in China. As of March 2013, there are 17 nuclear power plants in operation, with an installed capacity of 14,690 MW, and 28 plants under construction, with an installed generation capacity of 30,560 MW.

The Chinese nuclear objective for 2020 is to have a nuclear generating capacity of 70 GWe

Particularly significant was the presence of Chinese nuclear companies offering only Generation III+ reactors (AP 1000, CAP 1400, ACPR/ACP 1000 and the 100 MW ACP SMR (Small Modular Reactor)), and the intention to have the ACPR and ACP designs converge with a view to exporting their nuclear technology, to which great importance is attached.

Within the framework of the fair, important meetings were held with companies belonging to the major corporations CGNPC, CNNC, SNPEC, CPI and others, and numerous contacts were made with suppliers of components and parts who might be included on the list of Chinese suppliers of nuclear class components for our target markets.

teCNatom: New work for teCNatom iN the iter ProjeCt - may 2013www.tecnatom.es

Tecnatom will organise a “Workshop on the implications of the presentation of safety issues in publications and conferences” for ITER. The workshop will be delivered to some 40 managers of the organisation and will be structured around 4 sessions.

The objective of the workshop is to reinforce clear expectations within the ITER organisation of the need to act at all times in such a way as to ensure adherence to the safety assessments submitted to the regulatory authority (ASN). In this respect the workshop reinforces understanding of the basis of the safety assessment, helps to understand the reasons for the behaviours underlying the organisation of the workshop and provides methods to establish expectations regarding behaviour and act accordingly, through coaching or correction.

This role, collaborating in the strengthening of the nuclear safety culture, is in addition to other work in which Tecnatom is involved in the ITER project, such as the non-destructive inspection of the pre-compression rings and sectors of the reactor vacuum chamber.

Since its entry into the aeronautical industry almost 15 years ago, Tecnatom has been developing new inspection systems and also fine-tuning equipment manufactured by other companies, with a view to allowing for its continued use in the medium and long term.

These updating tasks include not only the replacement of equipment that might become obsolete, but also other updating activities aimed at providing greater reliability and a longer lifetime to the installation. In this respect, Tecnatom has undertaken exhaustive monitoring of the equipment supplied, allowing it to identify the most critical components as regards the availability of spares and to propose more advanced and more productive replacements.

Another of the advantages is that the updates are accomplished by maintaining the same operating interface, as a result of which the operators continue to work in the same way and the training required for the new procedure is minimal.

Furthermore, the reliability of the new equipment reduces the number of shutdowns for corrective maintenance, decreasing the time required for component replacement and the cost of the spares themselves.

New spent fuel casks in Ascó nuclear power plant.

Ensa has successfully loaded its manufactured casks in Ascó nuclear power plant. Last May 23, Ensa concluded the first spent fuel transfer from the fuel storage pool to the new independent spent fuel storage installation (known in Spanish as ATI). The work consisted of loading the first two of ten containers manufactured by Ensa, with a storage capacity for 32 spent fuel elements each. This installation allows Ascó nuclear power plant to expand its spent fuel storage capacity.

In the next few days and months, the staff of Ensa and its subsidiary ENWESA, in coordination with Ascó workers, will continue preparing the other casks and conducting cold testing for future fuel transfer to the ATI.Ensa has significant experience in spent fuel management and all fuel casks operating in the Spanish nuclear power plants have been manufactured by Ensa, some of them with Ensa’s own design. Ensa also participates in the loading of these casks. Moreover, the company also has its own designs for fuel racks that operate in national and international nuclear power plants.

New technology development for weld inspection. Ensa’s Advanced Technology Center has successfully developed robotized equipment to perform a specific ultrasound test (UT) in the “J” welding of the vessel heads that Ensa is manufacturing for Beznau, a Swiss nuclear power plant. This new equipment inspects this weld in a controlled and automated way, and it has been developed in compliance with new and strict requirements and criteria.

The system is able to automatically carry out the inspection by ultrasound test inside the CRDMH’s (penetrations at the head of the reactor pressure vessel through which the control rods enter into the vessel) to look for possible faults in the “J” welding.

This equipment has been entirely designed and manufactured by the Automatic Unit of Ensa’s Advanced Technology Center, the company’s technology center which continuously develops many of the search and development projects. The result of inspections conducted in the “J” welding, which also have been executed by a robotic system design, has been entirely satisfactory and in compliance with customer expectations.
