“Inspiring creativity, self-esteem and a love of learning

within a caring family community”

This morning I heard Mike Hosking interview Shirley McLean and he asked her whether luck or self-

determination had been the reason behind her success. Her response was interesting…..she attributed her

success largely to “guidance.” Last Friday I had the pleasure of listening to Eric Murray address a group of

Western Bay Primary Principals about his success as a world and Olympic champion rower. Whilst a good

deal of his (and Hamish Bond’s) success is clearly down to drive, motivation and focus to maintain their

world domination in their event, he also spoke about the impact their coach had on shaping them as high

performance athletes – “guidance.”

We are currently in the process of creating a school production (another Matahui first for me), in which

every child has a role of some significance. The intensity of excitement about the production keeps lifting

every time the students take the stage, as does their level of confidence and skill in assuming a character

role. The staff obviously spend time guiding the students, but the students, in many instances, also undertake

some responsibility for guiding one another in the interests of refining our overall performance so that we

can reach the highest possible standards of presentation. What a powerful way for them to connect to their

learning. How many of Costa’s Habits of Mind are they demonstrating by taking part in the production,

especially as they also take responsibility for how it develops as an ensemble piece?

So we look forward to next week when we set out to entertain you all with this year’s production “Animal

Talkback.” Leave your mobile phones at home – just bring your sense of humour and plan to have fun.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL THE STUDENTS ARE NEEDED FOR EACH PERFORMANCE. We would

appreciate it if parents can ensure that the children are delivered to school by 6.00 pm prior to the

evening performances even though you may not be attending that particular show. The children will

need to be collected at the end of the performance. Details will be emailed to parents.

Our congratulations to our AIMS GAMES competitors….. Rose R, Ruby, Caitlin and Olympia (bowls),

Miah (table tennis), Harry (multi- and Jessica (tennis) sport), Libby and Max C (cross country) who

represented Matahui School at this incredible sporting event. Though we may have been one of the

“David’s” up against “Goliaths” we were there, competing to the best of our abilities. Our thanks to Mr.

Evans for sharing the “dream” and organizing our team, to our parents for the support and encouragement

they gave their children and to the external coaches who helped our athletes develop their skill further.

Thank you all for the guidance you gave them.

IT’S EASY FOR LOCAL FARMING FAMILIES TO NOMINATE MATAHUI

SCHOOL

At PGG Wrightson, we’re already talking to farmers about the Cash for Communities spring

programme and we suggest you do too. When your rural contacts purchase qualifying

Balance Agri-Nutrients fertiliser, they can nominate Matahui School at

www.cashfocommunities.co.nz and then start earning $$$ for you. It’s that easy!

We’ve developed some simple tools to help you get the farming community behind your

cause. Simply go to www.cashforcommunities.co.nz and click on Resources to download

posters, advertisements for your newsletter and a range of fun children’s activities.

For more information, or if you have any questions, feel free to drop us a line at

ANNUAL FIREWORKS DISPLAY – PAEROA DOMAIN

On Saturday 1 November 2014 our Club will be holding its 25th Annual Fireworks Display

at Paeroa Domain with gates opening at 6.00pm. In recognition of this being our 25th

Annual Display we are including in our Fireworks Display a special feature which we

understand has never been provided at displays in Coromandel, Hauraki or Western Bay of

Plenty districts. You need to be on site to get the benefit of this feature. Gate charges have

remained as for 2013 with a family ticket covering 2 adults and 2 children for $15. We use

the services of a longstanding Auckland Fireworks provider. We also have food stalls and

other entertainment on site. No alcohol or personal fireworks are allowed on the grounds and

this makes for a very enjoyable night of family entertainment. Please contact me with any

further information you may require. Malcolm Davison, Paeroa Lions Club, 0274950806

INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL CAMPS NZ

Hi - just wanted to notify you about an incredible opportunity for football enthusiast kids that

we are bringing to New Zealand - AC Milan Junior Camps, to be held in Wellington in July

2015! We have just set up our website and are now taking expressions of interest from those

wishing to attend the week long camps.

The camps are aimed at all skill levels, but there is a “scouting” element within the ACM

Junior Camp environment. They are always looking to identify future talent and have

mentioned that they see great potential in NZ given we excel in all sectors relative to our

population base. If you know of any kids that may be interested in attending, please ask them

to register on our website asap, as we are launching into a nation-wide marketing campaign,

and initial indications are that the limited placements will be exhausted very quickly. If you

have any queries, or require any additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
