ISSUE 35

DET International CRICOS Code - 00861K

From The Principal

Dear Parents/Carers

The week commenced with a significantly reduced attendance on Monday. Many families attached an additional day to the

public holiday on the Tuesday to go away as a family. During my wandering on Monday, I spoke to one our families who were new to both our school and country. They expressed their surprise at the concept of a public holiday for a horse race.

It is indeed surprising that events that commenced in the 19th Century that have managed to survive in the 21st Century. The Melbourne Cup commenced as a half-day holiday in 1865. Long service leave - which is extra leave that an employee receives as a reward for a decade of service - is also engrained in our modern day culture despite the fact that the concept of one employer for life has virtually disappeared. Long service leave commenced in the 19th century, to enable civil servants to sail “home” to England, safe in the knowledge that they were able to return to their positions upon their return to Australia.

The 11th of November is a day of significance for all Australians and for many countries around the world. It is Remembrance Day. The poppy, an international symbol for those who died in war, is worn on this day. On Friday, we will observe one minute’s silence at Rowville Primary School to remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have suffered in wars and conflicts and all those who have served during the past 100 years. The student leaders will lead a brief ceremony on the basketball court at 1.00pm on Friday.

Next week is Beyond Boundaries Adventure week at Rowville Primary School. Most of our students will be participating in an outdoor adventure. As the majority of students will be participating in Beyond Boundaries next week there will not be an assembly on Monday morning.

One of the ways that we remain relevant is through continually engaging in conversation, so my inquiry question to families is:

What has learning been like for your child/children during 2017?

Please email to me your reflections:

[email protected]

Your responses will provide us with the data to inform future practice and ensure that we remain a school that is both inclusive and responsive. It is an opportunity for families to influence future practice.

The 2018 Foundation transition program commenced last Friday and will be held over the next three Friday mornings. An information session for 2018 Foundation parents is held in the library during these sessions. It is a chance for families to get to know our school and one another.

Cyber Safety Information Evening

On Thursday 30 November, the school will be running an information evening on strategies and hints regarding the use of ICT with children. The session will run from 7:00pm and will run for approximately an hour in the school library. The session is available for parents across all year levels. There will be an event on Compass for you to confirm your attendance.

The last Curriculum Day for the year is on Monday 4th December. Please note students do not attend school on this day.

From the Acting Assistant Principal

Dear Parents/Carers

This term we have been participating in a new innovative program called COLT (Cooking Over Lunchtime), which helps primary school students remain engaged in education and look out for their local community. Students are learning about healthy eating habits and the program teaches them the basics of food

literacy such as food sourcing, nutrition, cooking and hygiene. It helps them to learn valuable life skills such as communication, leadership, responsibility and teamwork. A group of year 4 and year 5 students cook together during lunchtime and then share the meal together. Positive adult mentorship and socialising helps young people gain confidence and build peer relationships and friendships. Programs centred on education and community connection are fundamental to the successful transition from childhood to adulthood. We are really excited to be a part of this program at Rowville Primary School and look forward to continuing this partnership into term one of 2018.

Last Thursday it was wonderful to see our new Foundation students so excited to meet their class teacher for 2018. It was also a fantastic opportunity for our new Foundation parents to be welcomed into our Rowville Primary School community at the barbecue. A special thank you to all of the staff who volunteered to assist with chopping fruit, cooking the barbecue, setting up, welcoming families, organising sports and clearing up. We would also like to thank Coles, Bakers Delight and McKays Family Butcher at Stud Park for supporting the school with some generous discounts and donations. It was a special evening and we look forward to our next community event at Rowville Primary School.

This week students have been preparing for Beyond Boundaries, which is a fantastic week at our school where students stretch themselves out of their comfort zone. With the whole school involved we look forward to hearing how each student has made personal growth throughout the week. I am sure that we will have some wonderful seeds to use for our Writer’s Notebook throughout the week.

I look forward to seeing more Writer’s Notebook entries over the coming weeks.

Have a wonderful week ahead.

Administering of Medication at School

Please be reminded that if your child requires medication on a short term basis (either prescription or over the counter) whilst at school, the medication must be dropped off and collected at the general office by the student’s parent/carer in original packaging. The parent/carer is required to complete an occasional medication form which is available from the general office at the time of dropping off this medication.

We are unable to administer medication to your child without this process being followed.

Please make regular checks to ensure your child has all absences and late arrivals to school approved on Compass.

Parents are notified on the top right section of the Compass home page in the news feed if there are late arrivals or absences to be approved. Absences can be entered in advance on Compass by Parents.

Once an absence is entered, there is no need to telephone the school to notify us that your child is absent for the day. Please note, School commences at 8.45am each day. Students arriving after this time will need a late pass from the school office before proceeding to the classroom.

2018 Foundation Enrolments

Rowville Primary School is accepting enrolments for 2018.

Children who turn five by April 30th of the enrolment year are eligible to attend school. When transferring from interstate, overseas or from a local school it is helpful if a written report is available at the time of enrolment.

Head Lice A reminder to parents to regularly check your children's hair for eggs and live head lice. The Department of Health’s recommendations are as follows:

The easiest and most effective way to find head lice is to use conditioner and comb weekly to check for head lice and if detected treat with a commercial treatment available from pharmacies. This includes: Step 1. Comb hair conditioner onto dry, brushed (detangled) hair. This makes it difficult for lice to grip the hair or run around.

Step 2. Thoroughly comb sections of the hair with a fine tooth head lice comb.

Step 3. Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue.

Step 4. Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs.

Step 5. Repeat the combing for every part of the head at least four or five times.

Step 6. If lice or eggs are found, the person should be treated.

Step 7. Retreat hair in seven days or follow instructions on the packaging of the treatment or from your health care professional

Step 8. Notify the teacher of school office confidentially if head lice is detected.

Term 4, Week 5 & 6

At the request of the children, this week is animal week! We will be looking at different kinds of animals and will be doing animal activities such as making a jellyfish, an echidna, animal puppets and a pet’s vs wild animal’s race!

New Sign in/out process As some parents may know, our service now has a tablet. This tablet is our new way of signing in and signing out our children with Camp Australia’s new program called ‘One Child’. Currently we are still using paper rolls as a safety precaution whilst everyone gets used to using the tablet.

Please allow extra time to allow me to show you how to use the new tablet and the new signing in and out process. Please note that we will be using paper rolls as well (so parents will be signing in twice for each session) just as a safety precaution.

We appreciate your patience during this transition of signing in/out process.

Sun Smart Policy

We are now following our sun smart policy. Children must wear a hat and sunscreen when going outside to play. The service will provide sunscreen but please ensure your child has a hat in their bag. No hat, No play.

A note from Brodie

Our tAF (The Camp Australia Foundation) activity has started for this term! We are supporting education in Nepal as in 2015 Nepal suffered from a huge earthquake which destroyed 83% of schools in Nepal. Camp Australia services across Australia are all contributing one page of all about Australia that will be made into a book to send to schools and children in Nepal. Our books that we will be make will help bring education to the children in Nepal who are currently missing out on education due to the earthquake.

We’re here to make after school care visits the best experience possible – for you and your child.

If you have any questions about the program – please feel free to drop by, meet the team and see what happens in after school care first hand.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

The Camp Australia Team.
