UNIVERSITY I MAR. 25, 1976 Newsletter for The University of Newcastle' THEATRE COMPLETED Lecture Theatre E01, con- taining 201 seats, opened on Monday, March 15. As a result the University boasts five theatres seat- ing 200 or more, the others being The Arts/ Drama Theatre, 275 people, B01, 252, The Ralph Basden Theatre (HOl), 250 and the Engineering Theatre (EFO1) , 200. E O ~ and the Arts/Orama Theatre are air-conditioned. The new theatre was approved by the Universities Commission for general University use but pro- vides special facilities for the Departments of Physics and Geol- ogy. Students enrolled i n these Departments are the main users, but Psychology, History, Legal Studies and some other depart- ments also hold classes i n the building. The features of E01 include a preparation room for Geology, a Each board includes a film screen; the two central screens can be integrated horiz- ontally to create a wide-angle screen. Lecturers' benches with lockable castors provide flexib- ility of movement in front of classes. The benches can also be used to transfer experiments from preparation rooms. Also amongst the teaching aids are overhead projectors which automatically correct "keystonind' and a public address system which employs a cordless microphone and a radio transmitter. The projection room contains a 16 mm Bell & Howell movie project- or and is suitable for the proj- ection of 35 mm slides. Lecture Theatre E01 was designed by Rodd and Hay Associates Pty Ltd and built by Convar Pty Ltd. The cost was $308,000. preparation room for Physics, a SEMINAR ON UNIVERSITY ' display area for Geology and sev- eral modern teaching aids. Derkenne, said: "The Committee i s anxious t o receive the fullest possible feed-back on i t s present con- clusions for those affected by them before preparing its final report and recommend- ations for submission to the Council. The "white paper" has been issued as it i s seen as the best means available for informing the University of the Committee's thinking". Whilst, by inviting written submissions, the Committee was giving every member of the University who wished an opportunity to place before the Committee his views on the proposals, the Committee believed that it would have a better appreciation of the strength and range of react- ions to the proposals if the proposals could be questioned, commented upon and discussed i n an open forum. The seminar, to be held in the Drama Theatre on April 7, 1976, a t 5 p.m., i s seen by the Committee as being such a forum. Whilst seeing some value in the order of the "white paper" being followed, Mr Derkenne advised that the session has been planned as an unstructured one i n order that discussion could focus on the issues which those attending wished to raise. THE VICE-CHANCELLOR' s FIRST TERM TALK TO STAFF will be held in THE ARTS/DRAMA THEATRE on Tuesday, 6th April, 1976 at 1 p.m. I a
