Making Sense of Space Dust: Researchers Explore

Solar System's Origins

The chemical breakdown of minerals that may be lurking in space dust soon will be available to scientists around the world.Because space dust contains the basic in-gredients that form planets, the University of Central Florida physicists' analysis could provide important clues about how the solar system formed and how life emerged.

For decades, astrophysicists have been stud-ying these clouds of dust, which contain ices, silicate minerals and iron compounds. But until the UCF team started looking at earth's minerals with far IR spectroscopy,

The Holy Quran : Chapter 2: Al-Baqarah

Sayings of The Holy Prophet (saw)

Abu Hurairah (ra) narrates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said:“Allah The Almighty says that all the deeds of a man are for his own sake except the fast. ‘ The fast is kept for My sake alone, and I am the reward for it.’ The fast is a shield against evil. Thus, when anyone of you is fasting, he should neither indulge in idle talk nor raise his voice. If anyone abuses him or starts quarrelling with him, he should just say, ‘I am fasting.’ Let Allah the Posessor of Muhammad and his life bear me out: the breath of one who is fasting is purer in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of musk. One who fasts experiences two joys: he is joyful when he breaks the fast, and he is joyful by virtue of the fast when he meets his Lord.”

identifying the minerals in space dust was . . . ambiguous at best.

"It was an educated best guess," said Robert Peale, a physics professor who has worked on mineral sampling projects at UCF since 1991. "We've analyzed more than 160 min-erals found on earth. Now we can compare our findings with new results coming in from the European Space Agency's Herschel telescope and start making some headway."

Scientists have been using Herschel and NASA's Spitzer telescope to chronicle obser-vations of space dust, and they also evalu-ate rare samples brought back from space missions or found when meteorites crash on earth.

Knowing what kinds of minerals are floating in space and are on asteroids and other plan-ets can give scientists clues to the tempera-ture of those celestial bodies, whether water is present and how the asteroids and planets were formed.

"A complete understanding of the miner-alogy of cosmic dust is essential to under-standing the formation and mineralogy of planets and, ultimately, to unraveling how life emerged in the universe," said Tatiana Brustentsova, a post-doctoral research as-sociate working with Peale on the $250,000 project.

NASA funded the research through its Jet Propulsion Lab in California. The agency is collaborating with the European Space Agency's Herschel mission, which launched in May 2009. The research is being per-formed in collaboration with scientists George Harlow and Dr. Denton Ebel at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and with Carey Lisse and Karl Hibbetts at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab.

The far-IR spectra for the minerals UCF's team studied will be available to scientists around the world via the Internet once the project concludes this summer. Findings will be published this year in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society journal.

Scientists use IR spectral analysis to look at the chemical properties of matter and gas. Each mineral is ground up to a fine powder, mixed and melted into a transparent plastic pellet, and then it is placed in an instrument that looks at its infrared transmission spec-trum.

Friday SermonsHuzur gave a discourse on thankfulness in his Friday sermon today. Huzur said all praise belongs to Allah, last Sunday the UK Jalsa Salana successfully concluded with His grace. Our heads are bowed to God in grate-fulness, indeed, should be bowed, for it is with His grace alone that everything concluded in such a fine manner.

It is established in the very beginning of the Holy Qur’an that true believers start everything in the name of God. So that God’s help may be with them through out and they may remember Him. The first verse of the Qur’an is: ‘In the name of Allah…’ thus declaring that the great Book is being read in the name of God.

Believers are enjoined to start everything in the name of Allah. The Di-vine attributes that are mentioned next are Rahman (Most Gracious) and Raheem (Ever Merciful). Huzur explained that Rahman God is One Who is extremely Kind and Benevolent and it is by virtue of His quality of Rah-maniyyat that He bestows His graciousness and puts all sorts of arrange-ments in place for mankind. By virtue of His Raheemiyyat, in addition to His general benevolence, God’s grace is manifested for those who are servants of the Gracious God. When a believer supplicates for help and is expectant of Divine succour, God manifests His support and help. Hu-zur said such were the manifestations that we experienced at Jalsa Salana. These were borne of God’s Rahmaniyyat as well as Raheemiyyat and they generate thankfulness and it is this gratitude that makes us servants of the Most Appreciating God (Al Shakur) and we thus receive His beneficence at every juncture. As the Qur’an states: ‘…If you are grateful, I will, surely, bestow more favours on you;’ (14:8).

Humanity First Appeal : Donations For Pakistan FloodsThe recent heavy monsoon rains since the end of July in Pakistan have led to widespread flooding on a scale not seen for over 80 years. So far, over 10 million people have been affected and at least 1,600 have been killed. The main affected areas are in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, FATA and Punjab provinces, with swollen floodwaters now affecting Sindh. Al-most half of the country is now affected with reports suggesting that 252,000 houses have been destroyed or badly damaged. One of HF Pakistan’s doctors on the scene reported today that “the magnitude of devas-tation is unprecendented. Nearly half of the country is wiped out in one form or another … physically, financially or mentally.”Humanity First Pakistan is working with the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) and has so far dispatched over 175 tents as well as mat-tresses, blankets, floor mats, buckets and shoes to support emergency shelter via Islamabad. Over 200 water survival boxes have been provided by WorldWater-Works and have been dispatched from the UK. The consignments are going to Dera Ismail Khan and Muzaffargarh near Multan. The local team is also prepar-ing packs of non-perishable food to last a month for 1,000 families. The initial response package is for around 6,000 people, but it is expected that the scale of the reponse will need to increase in the next few days. The situation is dire, and with the swollen water levels, destruction to infrastruc-ture and scale of injuries and illness, there are worries that water-borne disease will start to spread rapidly.
