25th September 2015 - Issue 3
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to our third
newsletter of the academic
year. I want to start off today
by saying how pleased I am
at the number of Headteacher
Awards that you can see in
today’s newsletter. This is
clear evidence that a large
number of amazing things are
going on in all of our
classrooms and lessons on a
regular basis. Well done to all
of our award-winners today -
we are very proud of you.
On Thursday of this week, I
was lucky enough to attend
the Fashion Show, which took
place at our VI form campus
in Newport, where students in
Years 12 and 13 displayed
their amazing work. It was a
high-quality event and we
need to congratulate Mrs
Woodford and her team for
yet another stunning display
of talent.
You will recall that I have
touched upon the importance
of uniform in our last two
newsletters and I am pleased
to report that we have made
significant improvements in
this area in the last week or
so. I have attended both Key
Stage assemblies this week
and the appearance of the
majority of our students in the
main hall was amazing – well
done to all of them, and well
done to all our parents and
carers who continue to
support us on this vital
issue. In the next few weeks
we will be working, in
particular, with our Year 11
students as the senior team
and our Key Stage 4 team, Ms
Attwood, Ms Giffen-Hudson
and Mrs Baker, organise a
series of interviews so that we
can have early discussions
with students about target
grades, strengths and areas
for development and set the
s c e n e f o r o u r t r i a l
examinations, which are,
amazingly, only two months
away!
Finally this week, for the
families of our Year 7
students, please remember
that our first Tutor Evening
takes place on Wednesday
30th September. We look
forward to seeing all of you
there.
Have a great weekend, as we
look forward to an England
victory in the Rugby tomorrow
night.
Yours sincerely,
Pete Shaw

University Talk
On Wednesday 16 September over 65 students in years 10 and 11 and a number of parents attended a presentation from Trinity College Cambridge graduates. Following the great success of Carisbrooke’s GCSE results this year and our school motto ‘Aspire and Achieve’ the aim of the talk was to show students that a Cambridge education is not beyond their reach. The students learnt about university life, how to apply for a university course there and the importance of their A level choices. At the end of the presentation there was a question and answer session.
A few comments from Carisbrooke students: Year 11 students ‘It was very useful, after listening to it I did start thinking about Cambridge which I didn’t before.’ ‘It was a very useful presentation and it has changed my mind and made me believe that Cambridge is not beyond my reach.’ Year 10 students ‘Having talked to the students from Cambridge it has
made me realise that the university isn’t off limits to me and how much closer it is than I thought.’ ‘It was very informative and made going to university and A level choices slightly less daunting.’ ‘I found the presentation interesting and inspiring. It has made me think more about what university I want to go to.’ Some parents’ comments: ‘An interesting presentation by university students, encouraging Carisbrooke College students to achieve well by working hard but also to enjoy their learning. The year 10 students listened well and asked well thought out questions.’ ‘I think the students were very inspiring and made it clear that if you work hard and try your best then there is no reason not to aspire to go to one of the top universities.’

ISSUE 1 (14th-18th September 2015)
This week saw the first set of sports fixtures take place after two weeks of trials and training sessions. A total of four football and two netball fixtures were completed with all matches being played against our federated neighbour Medina College. The first games to take place were between the year 7 and 8 football teams at Medina. The year 7 game witnessed a superb all-round performance from the team, comfortably brushing Medina aside with a confident display of slick passing. No special mention for one single player as every member of the team played their part in the victory. Final score was Medina 1 Carisbrooke 11. After taking an early lead in the game and winning 2-1 at half time, the Carisbrooke year 8 lads succumbed to Medina’s dominance in the closing stages of the game. Great defensive work and leadership from Jack Snow kept Carisbrooke in the game for long periods. Final score was Medina 8 Carisbrooke 3, with goals from Scott Parker, Harry Cheek and Theo Catrina. Later in the week the year nine and ten teams played each other at Carisbrooke. The year 9 boys maintained their 100% win record over the last two years on the island with a comfortable 9-2 win, Lino Mamo-Pascoe, Kieron Illman and Finn Peacey all scoring two goals each along with an own goal. Special mention goes to Harry Cheek who replaced Leon Pitman due to being away at Portsmouth trials. In the year 10 game Medina dominated throughout beating Carisbrooke 4-8.
The netball season started with a win for both Medina and Carisbrooke. In the U13 game Medina won 6-9 after a very competitive which saw both sides play some excellent netball throughout. Star player went to both Zoe Holdaway and Lucy Isaacson. In the U16 game Medina came under fire early and never managed to pull the game back as Carisbrooke dominated throughout and eventually won with a very encouraging 46-0 score line. Star player went to both Courtney Lock and Susana Wheeler. As well as the fixtures against other schools, students have been taking part in numerous clubs and competitions at lunchtime and after school. The year 7 house football tournament got underway with a convincing win for APOLLO as they beat DEMETER 6-1. The second fixture saw POSEIDON put up a brave display against a strong ATHENA side. With only four players on the pitch they battled away and got a well-deserved consolation goal through the impressive Rhianna Vernon. Final score ATHENA 6-1 POSEIDON. Basketball club has started on a Monday lunch time and will also develop into a house competition from next week. Girls’ football, CV club, ultimate Frisbee, powerbase and rugby have also started with students engaging positively across all activities. However, there is always room for more who wish to come and take part. Overall, a very successful week for all involved with more clubs and fixtures to come next week. Well done to all our students who represented Carisbrooke College with pride and enthusiasm. Mr Peake (Head of PE)
Olympic dreams and extreme expeditions
We’ve got two great speakers lined up for the first in a series of evening talks to be held in the West Wight Community Centre, on Friday 2nd October at 7pm.
Come and listen to Andre Usborne’s story of how he achieved his Olympic dream, plus hear from top sports psychologist Sarah Fenwick, on her work with top-level athletes and extreme expedition teams!
Andre competed at the 1984 Winter Olympics at Sarajevo and was the Luge Team Manager at the 1988 Winter Olympics at Calgary. Hear his story of watching Torville and Dean win gold, meeting Princess Anne, watching the Jamaica Bobsled team crash (who inspired the film ‘Cool Runnings’) and being with Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards at the Calgary Olympics. Andre’s talk will be illustrated with clips from the Olympics, the Cresta Run and the Field Gun Run (perhaps the world’s most challenging team competition) – you’ll have to be there to discover where the Field Gun Run fits into the story!
Andre will finish with a few clips of luge crashes and will answer all of the questions you have always wanted to ask an Olympian. Plus come and see what an olympic sled looks like – experience what laying on it feels like.
Following on from Andre, Sport and Expedition Psychologist Sarah Fenwick will present some case studies to give an insight into her work with sports performers from local to World Class level and extreme expeditions.
Sarah is a Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist and Master Executive Coach. She has a strong sport and expedition background, including World class level in paragliding setting 3 World Records and medals at World and European Championships. She has completed at sailing World Championships and national/county/local level in a range of other sports.
Sarah has been a team leader and member of several expeditions including sailing to the Antarctic Peninsula, flying a paraglider from the top of a 5000m mountain and driving a land-rover off-road the length of Namibia. In her spare time she enjoys sharing her love of outdoor adventure with her husband Adam Younger.
Tickets for the evening are £8, which includes a buffet. They are on sale from reception. Proceeds from the evening will support the West Wight Sports and Community Centre Trust.
