It is ironic that there are more important things in life than exams, however they often need to do well in their exams to achieve those things. Sometimes it is necessary to work a little harder now to get the results they need later. Here are some hints on what they should be doing, which may assist you in supporting them through the next few weeks and beyond. A healthy body makes a healthy mind - No matter how prepared they are, if they happen to be sick during their exams, they will not be able to perform to the best of their abilities. To give their brain the chance to function optimally and to ensure effective memory retention they need to stay hydrated, exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes a day, eat a healthy diet and sleep 8 hours a day. Eat well and save the junk food for after their exams. Having a regular exercise routine is an essential part of staying mentally alert and helps release endorphins in the brain that positively enhance our mood, reduce anxiety and help us to build new knowledge. Extra time spent studying when you are fatigued will be far better spent resting. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEEXAM PREPARATION, PARENT EDITION.

Year 12 are currently in the process of preparing for their Trial examinations. The pressure is on, for some anxiety may begin to affect their mindset, others cruise through. We need to encourage them not to worry and to do their best.

Rotating study subjects – This is a helpful way to learn everything for their exams while preventing burnout on one topic. Switch to a different subject to keep focused during study time.

An organised work area – A tidy space and work area will lead to less distractions and help them focus on study. It is a good habit for them to sit down, and tidy the work area. A clear desk or table will result in a clear mind ready to focus. It is a good idea to have the workspace in a location that is not in their bedroom.

A study schedule/plan – Creating a study schedule is easy but they may need guidance in following it. Having a visual planner to remind them is a good prompt. They need to ensure they break the material they need to revise into chucks that are actually achieveable. This helps them keep track of what they accomplish along the way instead of looking at the big picture and getting overwhelmed.

Prioritise study time – Not all exams are equal, some will be more difficult than others, some may be worth more of their assessment mark, some they will find easy to study for, some they might find difficult and become overwhelmed. Encourage them to have a look at the exams to consider the time they need to allocate to their study regime.

Revise notes – the process of refining and revising their notes (by hand) is a great way to consolidate existing knowledge and identify where they have some gaps or need to improve. Students need to ensure their notes for each of their subjects and topics are up to date. These notes should be detailed, make sense and even summarised as they go along throughout the year. They should evaluate and reorganise their notes into what’s important, outlining important concepts, formulas dates and definitions so they’re easy to understand. Reading is a passive study strategy it still needs to happen but should be combined with more active study strategies to assist them with their revision.

Ask questions – Teachers are here to help students learn, they should be asking them questions regarding the material and the exam so that they are prepared. If a student realises they don’t understand something, they need to seek assistance from their teachers.

Implementing feedback – Students should be regularly taking on board feedback from teachers. This should occur after every piece of work or assessment, to ensure they understand where and how they can improve. They need to review the feedback they have received and work on their weaknesses and knowledge gaps.

Work on handwriting – Poor handwriting can have a huge impact on exam results. Messy or illegible handwriting can make it difficult for the marker. They can strengthen their hand muscles using a stress ball or practise writing essays by hand.

Visualise - If they are a visual learner, it might help to create mind maps or diagrams to visualise how the concepts they have learnt relate to one another. This is especially beneficial when learning concepts that build upon the understanding of one another.

Set up self quizzes - If they draft potential exam questions and quiz themselves, they are more likely to become familiar with what they need to study and the type of language that will be needed in the exam.

Study for the style of exam - If it’s multiple choice, they will need to know definitions and concepts. Essay exams focus on their understanding of all the concepts presented, with examples.

Color coding – They can create a system to color code material that’s going to be in the exam by what’s most important, less important, etc. This will help them focus on the most important information and prioritise what they have learnt. The ALARM scaffold they have been learning and using in class is a great tool for this.

Determining what they don’t know – Students should test themselves regularly to determine what they do and don’t know and spend time learning any content they missed or do not understand completely.

Pace yourself – A gentle reminder to make sure they stay focused and don’t burn out. They will not be able to memorise or comprehend all the material at once. Balance is key here, they need to ensure they follow learning and revision with break times to recharge and relax. Pace themselves by starting early and having a schedule to avoid opting for all-nighters, which are an ineffective way to study. Studies have shown that concentration falls dramatically after 50 minutes so ensuring they are taking plenty of breaks in between their study routine gives them the chance to stay focused longer, especially if they are revising across a whole day.

A buddy or group study session - While individual, quiet study is an essential part of exam preparation, working with a group of friends should also be included as this provides the opportunity to teach classmates, share notes, test each other and collaborate. The ability to explain and teach a concept to another is a great way to consolidate their knowledge and identify content they don’t understand. When students explain concepts to one another, they are re-learning the material all over again. It’s a great way to reinforce what they have learnt. A check-in to ensure they are making effective use of the time might help them evaluate the usefullness of this strategy.

Soon too, this time will pass as the old saying goes. Encourage them to stick to their plan and the next few weeks will be quite productive, just ensure they stay consistent and have a balance between work and play. It is essential they take the time to switch off from study and socialise with friends and family.

“Recipe for success: Study while others are sleeping; work while others are loafing; prepare while others are playing; and dream

while others are wishing.” – William A. Ward

Those who place either first or second will attend the ‘Combined High Schools’ State Athletics Championships to be held in early September at Sydney Olympic Park. It was a tough competition and students from Kandos High School demonstrating a positive attitude and effort.
