Max Stephens reports on his recent time inJapan
I have been invited by the President to provide ashort report of my recent time in Japan as avisiting professor at the University of Tsukuba,near Tokyo. My visit was sponsored by ProfessorMasami Isoda at the Centre for Research inInternational Cooperation in EducationDevelopment (CRICED). The Centre has a specialrole in working with teachers and schools indeveloping countries, and is involved in a numberof international projects through JICA (JapaneseInternational Cooperation Agency) and otheragencies such as the World Bank.
My work took me into classrooms in the Universityof Tsukubas attached schools in Tokyo and intoprimary and middle schools in Tsukuba city itself. Iwas impressed by the confidence with which manyJapanese children could write and talk about quitedifficult mathematical ideas, and by the manyexcellent classroom te
