It’s going to be a great 2016! Welcome everyone to 2016 at Bilambil Public School! We hope

every single one of our students has a truly fantastic year! We

are starting the school year with 315 students.

This is the third year in a row that our enrolments have grown

and this number includes a massive Kindergarten of 54 excited

boys and girls starting school. With the increased number of

students we have grown a class up to 13 classes and thus

welcome Miss Simone Henry onto the Stage One team to teach

1/2H. Mr George Glasson is joining us in the library as we

implement a new library strategy where the teaching is based

on collaborative learning strategies not on specific curriculum.

Mr Glasson will be doing a wide range of learning experiences

with your children this year and we will seek your thoughts on

how effective they were at the end of the year. Ms Butler will be

maintaining some of her Learning and Support role, but she will

also be teaching every student in our school “Mindfulness”. This

program concept was heartily endorsed when introduced to

the P&C and is designed to enable students to be better aware

and more skilled when dealing with some of the emotional

pressures that young people now face as they grow up in our

busy world.

Mural - WOW look at our wall now! We are delighted with the new murals which have been

painted onto the wall on the top playground. The themes from

the previous murals was kept with our artist meeting with our

Aboriginal students to design the mural facing the path which

pays respect to the

indigenous people

who lived in the

Bilambil area prior to

settlement.

The other side is a

tribute to the early

history of the school

and it’s interesting to

note that the two

sides of the wall are

designed to link the

two murals together.

They look terrific and

thank you Sam for all

of your hard work!

Swimming Carnival Our School Swimming Carnival

is on Thursday, 11th February

2016 at Banora Point

Swimming Complex. We are

hoping every child who is 8

years or older will join us for a

great day.

Please return your permission

notes to the office as soon as

possible.

Parent Questionnaire After the positive response

from the parent questionnaire

sent home last year, we are

again sending a sheet home

for parents to advise their new

teacher about any specific

information that they wish to

share.

These are not compulsory but

allow the triangle of learning

between student, home and

school to start working well

together from the beginning.

Class Welcome and Information

Sessions and BBQ We encourage you to attend our Welcome and

Information Sessions and BBQ on Wednesday, 10th

February 2016 to meet or become better

acquainted with the staff and other families and

learn more about what life will be like for your

child this year. Regular and meaningful

communication with your child's teacher this year

can mean the small, often misunderstood

moments of your child's school life can be clarified

and addressed easily leading to happier students.

Communication should always start with your

child's teacher, but we also have our Assistant

Principals on each stage who will clarify anything

which may need arise.

School Assessment and Reporting Schedule Staff at Bilambil Public School are committed to working with you

to let you know how your child is going, where their learning is at

and what strategies are being employed to maximise their

learning. We will do this through many school based community

events, notes, newsletters, telephone and email correspondence

as well as the following formal and informal occasions:

We will work hard for your child this year so please don’t hesitate

to contact us if you have any questions throughout the year as to

what is happening with any aspect of your child’s learning!

School Chaplaincy Program We are pleased to announce that our school has been successful

in gaining participation into the National School Chaplaincy

Programme (NSCP) for 2016-18. This program is a Commonwealth

-funded initiative to support the emotional wellbeing of students

and the school community through the provision of pastoral care.

The school has retained Your Dream Inc., to act as the managing

body for the program in our school. This program is not religiously

affiliated and utilisation of this resource in our school will be

managed through our learning Support Committee. They are

currently calling for applications for this two day a week position

which will allow us to support so many more of our students with

managing the different challenges that they face. If you would

like more information on this program, please contact Mr Mostert

or look at yourdreamschools.com for more information or to

apply for the position. Applications will be finalised during Week 3

of school and interviews conducted accordingly.

Labels out for afternoon pickups As our enrolments have increased, the afternoon Kiss’n’Drop pick

up area has been utilised more. Besides those early straggling

students getting up to the gate a bit quicker, as a strategy to try

and fast track students and cars moving through the area more

quickly, we will be printing student names for parents/carers to

put on the dashboard on the front windscreen. This may take

some time to coordinate and in the meantime, people are

encouraged to create their own signs to use. Congratulations to

those people already doing this!

Student Wellbeing at

BPS This year we are currently

reviewing our Merit system

and the ways that our

students are rewarded as

they pass through the Positive

Wellbeing process at Bilambil.

Our merit system is still in

place with Bronze, Silver and

Gold levels being awarded

after earning ten ( 10 ) blueys

for each level. Blueys can be

awarded by all staff at

Bilambil for positive

behaviours such as

exemplary work, service to

others or making a special

effort.

Classes will also be trialling a

new positive behaviour/

encouragement program

called 'Class Dojo' where

children will be able to track

and monitor their own

progress through the positive

behaviour system.

Individual class merit

procedures will be discussed

at the Stage Parent

Information Sessions in Week

3.

2016 Fete We are delighted that the

P&C are committed to

holding another Community

Fete later on this year. The last

one was a sensational day

and led to our new

playground being

constructed in 2015.

Firing into our Growth Mindset from Day One Staff spent considerable time on the School Development Day

discussing how best to support students to have a positive or

‘Growth” attitude to their learning. Students undertook baseline

testing on their first two days of school which will allow staff and

students to set specific learning goals to be worked on over the

first term. Similar testing at the end of the year will allow us to

review the effectiveness of teaching styles and programs

implemented this year.

Year 6 Parents/Carers On Monday morning 8th February 2016, all Year Six

students will be involved in a special Year Six

commitment ceremony.

All children in Year Six are considered to be school

leaders. They have demonstrated their maturity by

helping their Kindergarten buddies settle into their

first week at school.

Year Six students will pledge a commitment to their

roles and responsibilities as senior students. Special

badges have been ordered and will be presented

to Year Six students at a later date. We will also be

presenting House and Vice Captain badges at this

assembly.

The Great Host Family Hunt is on again!

World Education Program (WEP) Australia, a registered, non-

profit student exchange organisation is looking for volunteer

families who would like to host a 15 to 18-year-old girl or boy.

Our students come from countries such as Italy, France,

Belgium, Finland and Chile and are arriving in July 2016. They

are looking forward to living and learning about Australia and

enjoying our famous Australian hospitality and lifestyle.

Without the generosity of families around the world, student

exchange could not exist.

Experiencing a foreign language and culture in your own

home is the next best thing to living overseas.
