APIARY UPDATE

On the rooftop apiary, 540 West Madison

currently has 60,000 bees within three beehives.

This is one of the many sustainability

initiatives the building has taken on

to help the environment.

Beehive Apiary

To the left is a photo of a queen bee

(circled in yellow) in one of 540 West

Madison’s hives. She is identified due to her

long and pointed abdomen and black plate

on her thorax.

The queen is the most important bee in the

hive. She can lay up to 2,000 eggs in a day.

In June, a queen bee was replaced in one of the hives. There is some risk to a new queen

being rejected, so she is introduced slowly. To do this, a queen bee and two attendant bees

are placed in a mailing cage. The cage is corked with cotton candy. The bees will eat

through the cotton candy cork to release the queen.

With a successful queen installation, numbers are expected to grow to

150,000 by the end of summer!
