‘Tis the TimeThere are two ways to think about the endof the year. 2009 is winding down towardsthe end on December 31st, and somehowwe have all survived a rough year. Analternative thought is that we are “coilingup our springs” for the rush of theHolidays. There are religious services,events, and maybe even some joyousfestivities to plan and attend. Either way,please take the time to celebrate what istruly important: your family and friends.

We will be doing that at the MasterBlender’s house in lovely Salisbury. Wehope for a white Christmas with all thetrees covered with snow and a roaringwood fire in the living room. There willbe an evergreen in the corner, adornedwith decorations both new and old.Luckily, we still have one youngster thatruns around, bringing joy to all. Aroundthe table, we will celebrate the successesof the older children, and commiseratewith those who have had a tough go of lifethis year.

ChaoZhou TeapotsThese beautiful ceramic tea pots are tiny. They are designed for brewing the famous tea from just outsideof the city of ChaoZhou in Southern China: Fenghuang Shuixian. ChaoZhou has an enormous andfamous Buddhist temple, so there was a large community of educated tea drinkers in ChaoZhou for manycenturies. Out of that cauldron came a wonderful oolong, a beautiful teapot and a method of tea brewing.This is similar to Uji, Japan where great traditions of tea and ceramic tea pots were developed to serveroyalty and the religious hierarchy. These small pots work best with Fenghuang Shuixian, but also do agood job with other Chinese teas. Himalayan Orange J-04This is a beautiful tea boastingmany white tips. Although onecan compare this tea to aDarjeeling First Flush, it isdecidedly less brisk, with lightovertones of tropical fruits. The“Orange” in the name refers tothe size of the tea leaf, OrangePekoe leaves being the largeststyle leaves. Steep this tea for 3minutes in 190 degree water. In early April, mylovely wife Elyse andI flew to London tovisit our friends atthe Historic RoyalPalaces. Weattended a black tiedinner held atBanqueting Housebuilt for King

Charles I of England. He used BanquetingHouse for gala celebrations, and that is whatwe had. My wife called my attention to thegrand Rubens on the ceiling and mythoughts turned to my mentor, StanleyMason. How impressed he would be thatElyse and I were guests of the Historic RoyalPalaces. If only he could have joined us forthis wonderful evening especially sinceStanley toiled most of his life in London as atea purveyor. I also recalled, it was around1619, that tea was introduced in London forthe first time. Maybe Banquet House hostedsome of the first tea parties in England.

While in London, Elyse and I took tea inthree distinguished hotels. First, we enjoyedafternoon tea at the Dorchester where wewere well known. The Dorchester was thefirst hotel in London to serve Harney & Sonsteas over three years ago. Then we took teaat Claridge’s on Sunday. It reminded me ofthe old Palm Court at the Plaza in New York.

Our third afternoon tea was taken at theConnaught Hotel. Once again, Harney teawas brewed and served to our complete satis-faction. We were recognized there becauseour companion was our English lady friend,Jane Pettigrew, the voice of British Tea.
