TRANSCRIPT
This week saw the amazing Year 5 Residential trip to Carroty Wood. I decided to extend the Year
5 Residential trip to three days rather than two this year, so that everything was less rushed and so
that the children had more of an experience of being away from home in preparation for the Year
6 Residential trip to Stubbers. This worked really well and I am pleased I made this decision. The
weather was kind to us for all three days, and this meant that children spent the vast majority of
time outdoors enjoying the woodland surroundings of the centre. They took part in a range of
exciting outward bound activities, including archery, high ropes, low ropes, climbing, BMXing and
swimming. There was also plenty of opportunity just ‘to be’- playing games, building woodland dens,
using their imagination and of course, performing at the talent show. It was a real pleasure spending
time with Year 5 and I saw how well behaved, polite and sensible they are - I know they will make
a super Year 6 next year.
My heartfelt thanks to Miss Ingram and Mrs Rolfe for organising the trip and ensuring that everything
went smoothly and to Mrs Gambier, Mrs Eagers-Bee, Mrs Krekis and Dr Springett for giving up their
time to lead groups, rally the troops and get stuck in with the children.
Here's to another great week at Atwood!

Mrs Standing will be running another Parent Gym course, starting next week.
Parent Gym is a course of six 2-hour workshops for parents and carers with ‘missions’ to complete
in between each one. Each ‘gym’ has up to 20 parents and one Parent Gym Coach.
Each week’s session is devoted to a different topic and comes with its own unique Parent Gym
magazine packed with practical tips. The highly participative sessions explore a vast range of
questions such as "How can I get my child to open up?" "How can I resolve family disagreements in
a positive way?" or “How can I build my child's resilience?"
The course will begin with a taster session on Tuesday 7th May, which runs from 2:00pm until
3:00pm. The six week course then starts on Tuesday 14th May, from 1:00pm until 3:00pm, and runs
until Tuesday 25th June (with a week’s break for half term).

Well-Being Room Pledge
The FOAP are happy to be pledging £1,380 to purchase a bubble tube and
associated fixings for the new Well-Being room. This pledge means that
the project of creating a safe space that is available for any pupil that needs
it can now get underway. The FOAP would like to thank Mrs Townsend
for all the time she has put in to planning this project and the funds she has already raised to support
it.

fantastic evening of fun and entertainment. More details to follow next year!
FOAP is inviting all Year 6 children to a summer fair challenge! The mission: to run a stall at the
summer fair and make more money than the other class! The winning class will all get an ice cream
on the last day of term.
What you need to do:
Come up with new fair games and choose your 1st and 2nd choice stall
Plan the stock you need (each class has a £20 budget - teachers will email your shopping lists
to FOAP By 17th May)
Plan and organise volunteers - each session must include one adult to supervise - to set up
your stall in the day - to run the stall 12-3pm - to pack up your stall (teachers to email your
rotas to the FOAP By 14th June)
The Friends of Atwood look forward to some fantastic stall suggestions!

YEAR 6 SUMMER FAIR CHALLENGE
SUMMER FAIR POSTER WINNER!
Atwood children will be taking part in a ‘Walk on Wednesday’
challenge. On the first Wednesday of each month, children are
invited to walk, scoot or cycle to school and earn their monthly
WOW sticker (KS1) or badge (KS2).
As the first Wednesday of the month has already passed, this
month our WOW day will be Wednesday 8th May, so please
do consider leaving the car at home that day if you can!
Our Junior Travel Ambassadors (Emma, Nyla and Laiya in 5I and
Holly, Mia and Austin in 5R) have been working with staff on plans for Walk to School Week (20th
– 24th May), so watch this space for more details on this!

Nursery and Reception classes are looking at the topic of 'People Who Help Us' in the weeks before
half term. We would love to have people to come in and talk to the children about their jobs. If you
do anything that you feel you would like to share with the children e.g. nurse, paramedic, firefighter,
police officer, vet, dentist, builder etc, then we would love to have you in.
Please speak to a member of the Early Years team or email in to the office
([email protected] ) if you could help us.
PEOPLE WHO HELP US
WALK ON WEDNESDAYS!
T-10 is a school sports and clubs provider that will be working with Atwood from the summer term
onwards to provide a range of before and after school sports clubs alongside our own. Your child
will have come home with a flyer this week detailing all the clubs on offer. Details of how to book
are below. Half term and summer holiday camps are also available – please see www.t10.co.uk for
details and booking information.
HALF TERM AND SUMMER HOLIDAY CAMPS AT ATWOOD
Released this month was a report conducted by SWGfL on the role of technology in the
family home to manage concerns around online safety and interactions around digital technology
use. It made for interesting reading and echoed Atwood's ongoing advice that having clear
communication and interactions regarding children's online worlds is the most beneficial thing we
can do to keep our children safe online.
The key message from the report is that while house rules (restrictions on apps to use etc) help,
and technology (parental controls etc) provides some valuable tools to help address some concerns
(such as access to harmful content), as young people get older, they will learn to bypass these
“reassurances” for parents and become less confident in their parent’s support if things go wrong.
We also know that tools and rules will do less to prevent contact risks, such as grooming and
bullying, two things parents are very concerned with. Tools and rules are no replacement for open
dialogue. They can only ever be part of the solution.

Crisp Packet & Pen Recycling
We collected loads of crisp packets and pens this morning.
Thank you to everyone who helped to collect them. We are in
this for the long haul and will be there again next Friday, so
please keep collecting! We will continue to be in front of the
library on Friday mornings until we have a permanent system in
place.
Please remember that the crisp packet must say crisps on it.
Walkers are very specific about what they collect, and even
though other packets might look similar, Walkers only want
crisp packets (any brand).
We can also collect batteries from you and take them round to
the office for you, if you don’t have time to drop them off to
the office.

GREEN TEAM NEWS
We would also like to ask parents if they have any spare old style Croydon collection boxes that
they no longer need and could bring in on a Friday morning at drop off. This will enable us to store
the crisp packets/pens.
Printer Cartridge Recycling
We are pleased to let you know that from next Friday (10th May) we will also be recycling Canon,
HP and Samsung printer cartridges. For the time being, until a proper collection bin is established,
please bring these to the decked area outside the library on Friday mornings at drop off. You will
have received an email letting you know what makes of cartridges we can accept, so please check
that yours is on the list before bringing them to school.
Litter Pick
We also did a litter pick in the bushes that the children often run through next to the clothes
collection bins this morning and were surprised to collect two black sacks full of rubbish. We ran
out of time but will go back in next week to complete the task.
