We congratulate the incoming Principal Dr Darren Egberts, who will commence at Sacred Heart College on 14 January 2019. We welcome him and his family into the community where you will be well placed to get to know him next year, in our 130 th Year of Mercy education in Kyneton and districts. Families were sent a detailed letter introducing Dr Egberts from Mercy Education. Our 2018 College Captains were outstanding ambassadors for the College at the Kyneton cenotaph on Remembrance Day. Both Ned and Keeley laid the College wreath and recited In Flanders Fields. The College takes great pride in our role within our local community, and likewise we are very proud of our student leaders. The great attitude shown by our new student leadership team, including the Junior School Cabinet is wonderful to witness. Our VCE examinations were conducted in a calm and supporting environment largely due to the professionalism of our VCE Coordinator Mr Paul Matthews, our chief supervisor Mrs Merle Wielens and her fellow supervisors. The staff at the Senior Programs Office (SPO) ensured all communications and regulations from VCAA were carried out with a minimum of fuss. Our Year 10 and 11 students are likewise undertaking their examinations which will prove both challenging and a good indicator of their effort and skill set as they meet the challenges of their senior years of schooling. This Friday we will say our final farewell to our Class of 2018, during the Year 12 Graduation Dinner. With the VCE examinations and the VCAL assessment behind them our Year 12 students have a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the end of their Secondary education with their parents and staff of the College. We wish all our Year 12 students and their families every happiness and success as they take the Mercy values they have embraced in this Catholic school into their future lives. Staffing for 2019 is coming together well as we shape a professional and energetic team of staff for next year. Details of staff departures and new staff joining us will appear in our final Newsletter in early December. I thank you, staff, students and parents, for your effort to bring 2018 to a meaningful and focused conclusion in this the last term of 2018. Prayer

This term has seen the finalisation of our 2019 Student Leadership Team. The structure has further expanded to include a Culture portfolio. This is the area which will engage student voice, determining how to gather student input into meaningful and important aspects of the school. The calibre of the candidates has been amazing. The most important aspects of the process are the speech to the school and the interview. The current Captains and Leaders were on the panels, making the process truly student driven. We all look forward to working with the new Student Leaders during 2019.

MERCY@WORK NEWS - Viv Penney

MERCY@WORK CRAFT STALL AT KYNETON SHOW

Many people attended and enjoyed the annual Kyneton Show on 17 November. The Showgrounds were a buzz and a constant parade of parents and children came into the Free Activities Tent and worked together creating various pieces of craft. Ms Maxine McKee and Ben Cooper were kept extremely busy with her painting stall. The Mercy@Work students were so generous with their time and helped to run a great craft stall. We were busy making God’s eyes and friendship bracelets out of wool. Children also loved making beaded bracelets and necklaces, quietly doing some mindful colouring, making paper planes and creating all manner of interesting objects from styrene foam balls, feathers and glittery shapes. Many thanks to the staff who assisted on the day; Alexis Epstein, Caleb, Linda Letten, Annie O’Shannessy and Sharon Hardham. A huge thank you to the students who volunteered their time on the weekend: Elizabeth Podgorska, Georgia Old, Mitchell Boyer, Neita Kirley, Anna Donnelly, Charlotte Godsmark and Bridie Goodwin. Thanks to everyone for helping as Sacred Heart is given money for helping on the day and we will ensure this money is given to a worthy charity.

2018 CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE

TOY DRIVE FOR THE SALVOS This year the Mercy@Work team has created a Toy Drive initiative through the Salvation Army. We are asking that perhaps instead of (or as well as) giving KK presents within Homerooms a gift could be given to the Toy Drive. This gives us the opportunity to think of other people who might otherwise have nothing for Christmas. We also ask that although it may be easy to buy for a 3-5yr old, presents for teenagers or parents are usually desperately needed. Gift cards are an excellent choice for these age groups. Students are asked to bring in any presents and please attach the gift tag (or label with the age group) to the unwrapped present. These will be collected in Homerooms and the Mercy@Work team will pick up the presents. If parents or friends would like to donate to people in need this Christmas you can ask your student for a tag and return your present to the Main Office or through your students. Thank you everyone for supporting this great cause. Nicolas Hanna on behalf of the Mercy@Work Team

Sacred Heart College ‘The Green Team’ - Leonie Garvey and Viv Penney "We received this world as an inheritance from past generations, but also as a loan from future generations, to whom we will have to return it!” so remarked Pope Francis in a meeting with world leaders in Quito, Ecuador a couple of years ago. Here at Sacred Heart College we have a work force of staff members for whom this resonates. Working with young people daily is a constant reminder that we are all accountable to the future of this planet and share the responsibility of passing mother earth to future generations in the best shape we can. Recently The SHC Green Team rebooted with a committed eighteen staff members resolved to making a difference environmentally to daily life at the College. As a group we will identify where we can improve our sustainability practices and will focus our efforts upon implementing positive change. At times initiatives such as using Role Model toilet tissue or light switch Turn-off Reminders may seem, in the scheme of things, insignificant: but when you add in the recycling of all coffee pods used in the staffroom, trialling waste sorting bins on the yard and the responsible disposal of batteries you can sense that there is a movement here which will consolidate and strengthen, empowering all generations to live sustainably for the future.

The end is nigh! Two huge Music events have taken place over the last few weeks. Ms Anna Clarke and myself spent a full day panelling a huge number of auditions for students (both current and incoming) applying for 2019 Music Scholarships at Sacred Heart. This is one of my favourite days of the year – seeing the outcome of students’ hard work, practice and passion for their craft every year is a absolute joy when we see tangible progress each year. Students’ musicianship has improved significantly, and the allocation of scholarship winners was a very difficult task. Results of the Music Scholarships will be made public at the End Of Year awards ceremony on Thursday December 6. Congratulations to all students who applied and auditioned. Last week’s Music Leaders’ Concert was a blinding success. The concert was hosted and organised by our Senior Music Leaders, Loree Newton and Sophie Ellen, with help from our Junior Music Representative, Isabella Acquisto. The concert featured all of our College Ensembles as well as a piece by students from each of our ten Instrumental Music teachers. The level of musicianship was very high, due to excellent rehearsal process. A special presentation was made by Sr Madeline Duckett (RSM) who donated a clarinet to a student who has worked hard and is currently hiring an instrument. Jemima Bradfield Smith is a very worthy recipient of this generous donation and will, no doubt, continue to share her passion and talent for clarinet with the College for years to come. We bid a fond farewell to those Year 12 students who have immersed themselves within the world of Music through their time at Sacred Heart: Joel Blanch, Caitlin Elliot, Isobel Grech, Maclaen Hargreaves, Angus Henry, Regan Kelly, Laura Martin, Aliyah Moore, Cailin Prebble and Eliza Wills. Please keep playing and may Music continue to play a major part of bringing you happiness and defining who you are. As per every event, our Friends Of the Music Program (FOMP) team helped make the event come to life. A special presentation was made to three FOMP members who have spent many hours supporting our vibrant department and whilst no longer having any children enrolled as SHC students, remain a special part of the college community: Mrs Cassie Hale (aka. The raffle queen), Ms Robyn Munday and Ms Kate Crowhurst. As jazz saxophonist, Charlie Parker famously wrote, “Now is the time”! Enrolments for the 2019 Instrumental Music program can be completed online by clicking HERE. Please get in early to ensure that a space is available for you to learn an Instrument at Sacred Heart next year! Please submit your application no later than 23 November.

LINCS - Project Launch at the Social Foundry in Kyneton The LINCS (Learning, Initiating, Networking and Connecting for Success) students have been developing their project management and construction skills in this alternate applied learning subject offered to Year 9 students. The major project for 2018 was selected after the students identified the need for play equipment at Kyneton’s Social Foundry to entertain customers’ children. The team of students investigated options for activities and equipment to interest and engage young children. The result was a children’s tee pee including a playground and a vertical garden for the cafe. This project provided a fantastic opportunity for students to experience a hands-on project from conception and design to final delivery. As well as developing their design and construction skills, students were involved in creating and managing the budget, project management, filming the process throughout the year and planning of the official launch. Thank you to the students and staff involved in Paddock to Plate and Hospitality for their support in catering for the launch, to the maintenance team for their ongoing advice and assistance, and a big thank you to the teacher in charge of LINCS for 2018 – Ms Kirsten Gibson. Ms Gibson spent countless hours planning, nurturing and inspiring students throughout the project, ensuring all gained the most from this experience. All were thrilled to participate in the unveiling of the equipment at the launch on 14 November. We greatly appreciate the support of Kyneton Community & Learning Centre through funding, Cobaw Community Health who provided well-being and team building education and Paul Dettmann and the team at the Social Foundry for providing an avenue for this project. Spending time at the Foundry also provided students with an opportunity to learn more about the training opportunities available there and the great support this not-for-profit, social enterprise coffee shop provides the local community. Further information on the Social Foundry can be found at: www.socialfoundry.org.au

At Sacred Heart College we value our partnerships formed between families, the College and Community. We aim to continue supporting our families and raising parental awareness of the benefits of engaging in their children’s education along with providing them with the skills to do so. We hope that you enjoy this new regular feature in our Newsletter, and the articles presented which may assist you in supporting your children’s education and wellbeing. Please click on the link below: As parents, we try to educate our children to make safe choices, whether this be at parties, learning to drive or when spending time with friends. On Tuesday 13 November we hosted an information session with Mark Duley and Jason Azzopardi, where we learned more about the teenage brain and the effects of alcohol and drugs on the minds of young people. This presentation included some tips on what to look for, and what to do in case of emergencies. The evening was presented by first responders with advice based on a wealth of experience – Mark as a MICA Paramedic and Jason as Leading Senior Constable in the Victorian Police Force and Youth Resource Officer / Proactive Operative. The evening proved invaluable to parents of children of all ages, but particularly those with teenagers or pre-teens, in preparation for this challenging stage of development. Kids Teaching Kids Water Conference Recently we attended the KTK Melbourne Water Conference at Melbourne University and Collingwood Children’s Farm. We had been preparing for this for months. Our preparation involved us visiting Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School to practice our workshop with the Grade 2 classes. It was a lot of fun! Our workshop consisted of hands-on activities focussing on the issue of Fatbergs in our sewers. We delivered this information to students from 12 different primary and secondary schools around Australia. The highlights of this experience were learning how to teach our peers about things we are passionate about, and engaging them, as well as learning about things that are affecting us in our different communities. Emma Kearney from the AWFL was a keynote speaker on the first day and she was inspiring. We would like to thank Coliban Water for sponsoring our participation in the conference, as well as Paula Thompson and Peter Webb for coming with us over the two days, and Anthony McMeeken and Markia Payne for helping us to put together our workshop. We would highly recommend that students get involved again next year. Year 8 Girls Impress at State Basketball Finals Damien Coonan

Our incredibly successful Year 8 Girls Basketball team played at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Tuesday in the State Finals, having moved through the previous rounds undefeated. The girls have been mentored by our Sports Coordinator Mr Damian Zanic, and have been under the tutelage of three Year 11 boys, in Head Coach Brendan McCarthy, Assistant Coach Jack Turnbull and Statistician/Conditioning coach, Lachlan Smallwood. The team played three 30 minute games, and although didn’t quite secure a victory, they came within just three points of Maribyrnong College, the well-known Sports Scholarship College, in their first game. Led by Scarlett Orritt, our explosive, determined point guard, who happily used her body as a battering ram on many occasions and Rachel Cassar who stood out with her clever passes and scoring, the girls gave Maribyrnong a huge fright. Our second game saw our girls take on Galen College from Wangaratta. Lilli Collins, who was clearly unwell with a nasty cold, stood out with her determined defence and skilful touch under the ring as did Imogen Hewitt, who was influential with her good vision and slick passes. In an intense game played at break-neck speed, Ella Unwin displayed sure hands and a cool head in the centre position. Unfortunately Galen were too good on the day and took the win. Our last match of the day saw SHC take on the undefeated St Joseph’s from Mildura. Paige Ward impressed as the versatile ‘inside and outside’ player, who scored consistently throughout the three games, as did Lexie Turner with her speed and good decision making. Talia Willmott, Macy Geisler and Scarlett Lynch also made the most of their minutes and ran hard at both ends of the court. Overall the girls played at a fantastically high level throughout the three games, as they did in earlier rounds, and were understandably proud of their efforts. Recruiting spies have noted that there are also some very strong female basketballers in Year 7, in 2018, so potentially in a two years’ time when they are in Year 10 and 9 respectively, we may have the makings of a very special group in the Intermediate, and then potentially later on, in the Senior divisions. Stay tuned - these girls will definitely be a team to watch out for.

Abigail Bradbury, Positive Education Leader

Slow down to get more done I am notorious for doing things quickly – I talk fast, eat fast, hang out the washing fast, walk fast, etc. I have found myself wondering if this is the best and most effective way of living my life. At the end of the day, I am exhausted and grumpy, and sometimes it seems as if I never really catch up, especially as things get busier at the end of the year. I felt sure there must be a better way, so I started reading about slowing down and whether or not it could be beneficial to be slightly less ‘rushy’. Here are 10 Ways to Slow Down and Still Get More Done in Your Day:

Practice Patience – You are always in a hurry and it results in unneeded stress. Try a little patience. Many of the things you are stressing about aren’t worth it, and many problems resolve themselves with just a little patience.

Think More – When was the last time you just took a moment to think? Instead of rashly acting, stop and think about what you are actually trying to achieve. A few moments to reflect will often change your priorities and course of action.

Do Less, Finish More – When you are in a hurry, you often end up multitasking, and doing too many things at once. Instead of starting 57 things, concentrate on finishing the three most important ones.

Enjoy Yourself – Are you truly enjoying your day? When you are “in the zone”, you are not only happier, but more productive. Slow down and enjoy the journey.

Spend Time with Others – There is a line between small talk and building relationships. However, spending time with others often leads to answers and productive outcomes. Instead of endlessly sending emails, go and see the person you need to connect with.

Say “No” More Often – Saying “No” when appropriate is an important skill if you are going to avoid overloading yourself. Sometimes you need to put you first, before you take on the stress of others.

Stay ahead – Last-minute rushes to meet deadlines create unneeded stress and crisis. You may say that you “work best under pressure,” but it feels so much better to be ahead of a deadline.

Plan – Saying you don’t have time to plan is simply an excuse. The truth is that planning is an investment that will save you time in your day. Planning can help you identify your priorities and avoid scheduling conflicts, as well. With a plan, you will be more relaxed during your day.

Slow your Pace – Haste often does lead to waste. Mistakes, rework, and missed objectives can be the result of going too fast. Try slowing things down. Be more conscious of the task at hand. Ensure your energy doesn’t burn out too early in your day.

Be Decisive – Make decisions. Don’t spend time endlessly analysing options. Own your choices, and don’t spend time worrying about them.

Mindfulness is a great way to start taking time out of your day to reassess your priorities and channel focus. Take a minute to stretch, take a few deep breaths, or have a walk around the garden for a few minutes, noticing sounds, smells and sights. If you’re like me, you’ll need to almost ‘force’ yourself to slow down, but if you do, you’ll reap the benefits.
