Motorsports News for Allen Turner 100TRANSCRIPT
May 13, 2011 #4
Look for plenty of action tonight. With the season nearing the
end, drivers in all classes are look-ing to add a championship to their resume. This will be race number 3 for the Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Models series. Only 2 remain to decide the 2011 championship. Drivers such as Pollard, Bendele, Vanderley, Grill, Jones and Pray-tor would love to go home with the first place trophy and the money in the Tucson 100.
It’s that time of year when some new drivers will invade the track
to prepare for the December Snow-ball. Bubba Pollard holds a slim lead over Texan Brandon Bendele, who will be trying to finish one posi-tion better than his last two races. In the first two PLM races Bendele has two seconds. Also look for the grow-ing rivalry between Pollard and D.J. Vanderley to continue as both driv-ers produced a few fireworks in the last race, then showed their displea-sures after the race.
All that plus the Bombers, Sports-men and Super Stocks tonight.
I’m happy to report that Mobile’s Donnie Hamrac is showing major
improvement in his healing process. Hamrac took a violent head-on crash into the turn two wall in the last PLM race. He has vacated the back brace and the healing process is in high gear. We are all happy to hear the good news. He is one of the nicest guys in racing.
We hope all the fans enjoyed the Winged Sprints on July 8th. If you
did. let Tim Bryant know. We thank Dickie Davis and Buddy Belarski for the display of the #99 and #R1 Super Modifieds during the show.
Don’t forget to tune in to “In the Groove” on BLAB-TV on Monday
night at 8:00 pm. BRING A FRIEND TO THE RACES!!

Welcome Gulf Power
We welcome our special guests to 5 Flags this evening, the men and women employees of Gulf Power Company. It is our pleasure to host the workforce and hope they enjoy the races. Over the years we have had to call on the crews to replace transformers, and they always gave us quick service. Thanks!
Welcome Phil Harper, of Livonia Michigan, PLM engine builder. Phil has added $300 for the fastest qualifier in tonite’s Pro Late Models, plus $300 for the best feature finish in one of his motors.

A Diff’rent Arrangement
Walter “Junior” Coleman lost his battle with lung cancer earlier this month. He is survived by his wife Shan-non; children Jay, Hunter, Alicia and Amanda; and his grandbaby Alexus. Junior was a loving husband, father, and pawpaw. He enjoyed Hunting, Fishing, and working on the racecars. He also enjoyed making people laugh and goofing off with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed in the pits.

Towers of Yesteryear...TOP was the second tower, the first was set afire by a disgruntled fan the night before the first Snowball Derby. No photo of that tower is available.
Middle photo shows tower that was in operation for many years up until 1995 when it was blown into the parking lot by Hurricane Opal. Bottom photo was a temporary tower set on a platform for much of the1996 season. The current tower has been in use since then.
Contractor Bobby Grant put down some deep pilings to support the current structure.
The tower is the nerve center of the race event, with timing, scor-ing, announcing, news media, and race control all operating side by side. Just as important is the food concession on the ground floor, the home of Karen’s Kitchen.
Call it a Press Box, or a Tower, It’s Where Race Decisions Are Made.
