Dear Parents and Caregivers
Thanks Special thanks to the community and staff who were involved with the Trivia Evening last Friday night. It was a fundraising event for the Musical Production (written by Josiah Carr and Anthony Yelavich) which will be performed later in the year. It was a fun evening with some friendly competitiveness for the place as the top team! Both the film evenings ,organised as fundraisers for the Musical Production and the Japan Trip, were well attended - Thank you for your continual support.
Andrew Ah San Andrew Ah San, a student in Year 12 had an accident last weekend with serious implications - please keep Andrew and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Extra Tuition Thank you to the teachers who provide the students with extra tuition after school and during lunch breaks. It is most appreciated by the students and their families.
Prime Minister’s Visit The Rt Hon John Key, Prime Minister of New Zealand, and the Hon Paula Bennett, Minister of Social Development and Youth Affairs, visited the school last Friday afternoon. It was a great success, with Mr Key interacting with students at all levels and with the School Council over afternoon tea - they represented their fellow students with great pride. Thanks to James Devereaux who did the initial background / contact work. There is an interesting article on the following page by James.

“It is not all about ability, it is about attitude”
On Friday 3rd August from 2pm to 3pm, the Rt Hon John Key,
Prime Minister of New Zealand and the Hon Paula Bennett,
Minister of Social Development and Youth Affairs and
Member of Parliament for Waitakere, visited Liston College.
The visit began with a welcome outside the Edmund Rice
Centre. The Prime Minister, John Key had a photo taken
outside the chapel wearing our new Liston scarf – this was later
signed by him. Much to the excitement of the Year 7 classes,
both John Key and Paula Bennett waved as they walked past
their classrooms. The group then walked through the Senior
Quad with the Prime Minister taking the time to talk to a
number of the senior students as they waited to begin class.
The Prime Minister addressed the Year 13 students, covering
topics relating to university, student loans, use of alcohol
responsibly, what makes a successful career and useful advice
on planning our futures. Paula Bennett‟s address encouraged them to “make your voice be heard” and to express our
opinions. She reflected on her electorate and her role as Minister of Youth Affairs and Social Development. It was then
time for questions - the Prime Minister encouraged the students to ask any questions, which ranged from subjects at school
to what were his proudest moments. The final question asked was “How much does the average Prime Minister get paid?”
His answer was, there is no average Prime Minister as there is only one of him!
Mr Houghton thanked the Prime Minister and Minister Bennett and they then moved outside for photos and a chat with the
Prefects. Mr Peterson had one of his old „Bennett‟ campaign boards out for the Prime Minister and Paula Bennett to sign.
With crowds of students around the R block, John Key shook hands with a lucky student who had his hand hanging out the
window.
After discussing school houses, sports and our grounds, the group moved to the chapel to look at our flags and then to the
Board Room where they meet the School Council
Representatives, Mr O‟Rourke and Mrs Skelton. While
enjoying afternoon tea, the Prime Minister told some of
his golfing stories, making those in the room laugh
heartily.
At 3pm, the visit concluded with photos taken outside the
Edmund Rice Centre with staff members and the school
council. There was a presentation of gifts to the Prime
Minister and Minister. It was a great visit, from the
inspiring speeches to the Year 13‟s meeting with the
Prime Minister around the school - the visit was
memorable and enjoyed by everyone involved.

On Tuesday 31st July, Liston College Junior Choir performed at the Kids Sing at the Auckland Town Hall.
We arrived at the Town Hall feeling nervous, yet very excited. All schools were called into the Supper Room and then lead into the huge auditorium which has one of the biggest organs in New Zealand!
We started the competition with King’s College and they performed well. We waited until 1pm, when our choir went into the Green room to practice and then we were called onto the stage to perform. It was a bit frightening for some of the students, but they did well in the end and had a lot of fun.
