Autumn Concert Thanks to Miss Pugh for organising a really excellent evening of music last Wednesday evening. There were over 30 student performers supported by a good number of parents and staff. We were entertained with a wide variety of musical numbers played/sung by students from every year group. Every performance had something to commend it with some truly memorable numbers which really showcased the talent at Collingwood.

2015 Learning Partnership Curriculum Review As you will know Collingwood is an active member of a collaborative partnership with four local secondary schools known collectively as the 2015 Learning Partnership. The four partnership schools are The Bishop David Brown School in Woking, The Magna Carta School in Staines, Kings International College in Camberley and The Winston Churchill School in Woking. The primary aim of the partnership is raising standards across the schools, through improving teaching and learning. The partnership’s activities include peer review, staff development, departmental support and increased student opportunities. Unlike Multi-Academy Trusts there is no Chief Executive or Trust staffing and all work is done by giving up time to support the LP’s work without any financial commitment.

Yesterday we had a Curriculum Review at Collingwood focussing on English, Maths, Science and Geography. Six senior colleagues from the four schools, led by one of the Head Teachers, spent the whole day speaking to Heads of Department, staff and students as well as observing lessons and looking at students’ work. At the end of the day SLT received very comprehensive verbal feedback on their findings. The review team were hugely positive regarding our curriculum planning, our aspirational students, our consistently strong teaching teams and our ‘fantastic departmental leaders’. They have confirmed the strength and depth of our work, whilst providing a small number of ‘Even Better Ifs’ to focus on in the future.

I am obviously very pleased with this external validation of our work, especially as it is given by working practitioners from schools in similar contexts. It also highlights a very small number of areas for us to focus our attention on in the future although, reassuringly, there were no surprises in their findings, and the majority of actions are already in our development plans.

I thought parents and carers would like to know the excellent outcome of this review.

Science staffing I reproduce below my recent letter to parents regarding Science staffing in case anyone has missed it.

I want to take the opportunity to inform you of the measures we are taking to address the challenging staffing situation we have been facing in Science due to the unavoidable long-term sickness of two of our teaching colleagues.

As a College we are doing everything in our power to minimise the impact this is having on the education of our students. Whilst we understand that this is frustrating for all, in situations such as this the College will prioritise examination groups.

Short term measures already implemented include reorganisation of the Science timetable to give as many groups as possible teaching from science teachers for at least some of their lessons. We have also engaged Science specialist supply staff and are also hoping to find a suitable candidate to fill the Science post we are currently advertising.

Delivering quality education for your children is, as always, our aim here at Collingwood, and I can only try to reassure you that we are doing our best to achieve this in a very challenging situation.

We truly believe that students should be given a wealth of opportunity to participate in career led events and as a school this is something we are working towards developing more in the future. Students and parents were able to attend two workshops, one from Oxbridge and the other from HEON. Both workshops gave an insight into Further and Higher Education, Apprenticeship opportunities, student life and finance. We would like to thank everyone who attended and gave their time to inform our students of opportunities

available to them and for making it a very memorable day. We received some lovely comments from our visitors and exhibitors: “On behalf of Pearson College London, I would like to thank you for such a wonderful careers fair yesterday. Students were polite and friendly, Staff were approachable and resourceful, refreshments and food throughout the day were great. Overall it was a pleasure to work with Collingwood College yesterday.” Dominik - Pearson College, London

“The atmosphere in the room was fantastic, with so many students interacting with some great local employers. It was particularly striking to see the Year 9s getting so involved, a really good sign for Collingwood’s careers provision moving forward.” Adam Watts - Enterprise Co-ordinator for Spelthorne, Surrey Heath and Woking

“I just wanted to thank you for the invite and I was glad I was able to attend. It was great to see so many companies and organisations there, it all seemed very vibrant and all the students seemed to be engaged.” Mr Garrett - College Governor

“The Careers Fair allowed me to consider a variety of possible careers for the future, but at the same time it provided many prospects for the shorter term, through the presence of many university representatives. The Careers Fair allowed me to explore alternatives like Apprenticeships either at Higher or Degree level. It provided me with a clearer image as to what I would like to do as a career and what path, University or Apprenticeship I would like to take, as well as the grades I will need and the skills involved in the different possible careers.” Emily Georgiadis & Emily Clelland - Yr 12

“The Careers Fair was very helpful and gave me a better Idea of what job I'm looking for.” Tia James - Yr 8

“It was great and interactive. It really helped me realise how many interesting jobs there are.” Liam Camden - Yr 8

"I found the careers fair very beneficial. There was an excellent variety of companies to speak to and they provided great advice and answered any questions I had. Thank you to everyone who put it together." Rachel Brickhill - Yr 8

"We were able to learn more about careers and how to get into them." Charlotte Collins & Chloe Terrett – Yr 11

"I thought it was good, useful and benefitted me largely." Mia Radburn – Yr 11

On Thursday 7 November the under 13 girls rugby team went to play at the Quins Festival at Staines RFC. They won all their matches. Despite some of the opposition being much bigger than Collingwood, our Year 7 players made amazing tackles and the Year 8s completed some excellent running lines to win all their matches in the main 10s tournament. The 7s tournament was more challenging with the space that is provided for the ability to attack our space. The girls were very lucky to meet Harlequins players who play for Fiji and the USA and have just returned from the world cup competition in Japan. We now have some excellent areas to work on, on a Wednesday after College. Well done everyone!!

On Saturday 27 October a group of Years 10, 11 and 12 students headed to Heathrow Airport to start a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the West Coast of America. When we arrived at the hostel in San Francisco we were wowed by a stunning view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Following our ten hour flight we were all a bit tired, but still very excited to walk through the streets of the city and enjoy our first of many burgers at Applebee’s. On our first morning in San Francisco we ventured to Alcatraz prison. This was an interesting and eerie experience. There were so many cells and it was fascinating to hear about all the escape stories. After Alcatraz we took a private coach tour of the city. This included stopping at the Golden Gate Bridge, several viewpoints and Lombard Street, which is the most crooked street in the world. This was incredible and there were so many brilliant photo opportunities! After a jam-packed day we were able to enjoy some shopping and seal spotting on Pier 39, and then a delicious dinner at The Hard Rock Café.

The next day entailed a slight change in itinerary due to forest fires at Muir Woods. Instead, our very kind coach driver Richard agreed to take us to Yosemite National Park. The natural beauty was absolutely stunning! After a quick stop for lunch, we continued on our way to Bakersfield. Here, we got to eat at Jon’s Incredible Pizza, which truly was incredible. We could eat as much pizza and pasta as we wanted to, and once we had finished we got to enjoy time in the arcade; where we went on rides, played crazy golf and got a go on the bumper cars.

On the third day we began our journey to Death Valley. This was very exciting as we all got to play in the desert whilst being surrounded by such a beautiful landscape. The sky was perfectly clear and the sun was shining – it was gorgeous. We then continued to our next stop which was a very different location – Vegas! After dropping our suitcases off at the motel we got the monorail into the centre of Vegas. No one could take their eyes off the glittering lights and fantastic architecture. Our stop for dinner, The Hard Rock Café, meant some people were on their third burger of the week. After this, we got the opportunity to walk down The Strip as this led us back to where we were staying. The city was mesmerising to walk through, as one minute you were at the Eiffel Tower, and the next you were at the Egyptian Pyramids. We were super excited to get the chance to go on The Big Apple roller coaster. We got some brilliant panoramic views of Vegas from the top – if you were able to keep your eyes open!

STUDENTS TAKE IN THE SIGHTS OF WEST COAST USA

The following day, we headed to The Grand Canyon. This was insanely spectacular! When we finally arrived, we couldn’t help but stare as it was the most amazing natural beauty we had ever seen. We walked around some of the perimeter and were fascinated by all the different colours of the rock and how vast the area was. After a long walk we went back to the cabin and got to look in the gift shop and had a delicious hot chocolate. We then headed to our next hotel, which was decorated with strings of fairy lights all around the bar and the

jacuzzi. We then trekked through the cold and into Wendy’s. We passed people dressed up holding buckets of sweets standing around fires as it was Halloween. We were also greeted by Wendy herself and Deadpool. After a filling meal we headed back to the hotel for a long night’s sleep. The next morning, we hopped back on the coach and headed back to Sin City for a day of shopping. We spent hours walking around all the shops and spending the rest of our money. After shopping we sadly headed to the airport to wait for our flight home. This trip was amazing and we enjoyed every second of it. We would definitely recommend to other years. We would also like to say thank you to Mr and Mrs Magness, Mrs Edwards and Mrs Everson for making this trip possible and for looking after us, and tolerating us in the mornings even though we were slightly moody. Thank you so much! We have made so many wonderful memories!

Max Reid (8H), Ralph Coates (8K) and Sam Dobres (11E), along with the other team members from the Windlesham Junior Boys Golfing Academy, have qualified for The Junior Team Home International Finals in Morgado, Portugal this coming February. They have come through from a field of over 1000 English Clubs and will be one of two English Clubs competing against sides from the other Home Countries in Portugal. They are by far the youngest team to qualify so a fantastic achievement for them as individuals and as a club team. The competition is being covered by Sky Sports and will air around March time - we will keep you posted with the details nearer the time. Many congratulations boys!!

Mrs Puri's second Year 7 Science class were recently set a homework to create a model of either an animal or plant cell.
