Henry Estate Winery is steeped in family tradition.
Five generations of the Henry family have farmed
the Umpqua Valley, and currently three generations
run the estate. Th e Henrys have made Henry
Estate Winery one of the best known Oregon
wineries for Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay,
Gewürztraminer, and White Reisling.
Th e winery is nestled in Southwest Oregon’s Umpqua Valley next to the
Umpqua River, where the climate and soil type are ideal for growing varietal
grapes such as pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay, white riesling and müller-
thurgau. Located near the 45th parallel, the Umpqua Valley climate is similar to
the Burgundy region in France.

United Way
Greater Douglas United Way
It all started with a very simple notion... gather the best nonprofi ts
together and simply generate one giving campaign once a year to
help off set their operational expenses. Fift y-eight years later, those
fi ve original members-- Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, American Red
Cross, Salvation Army & the YMCA --are still supported by your
donations to the Greater Douglas United Way.
As our community grew, the organizations supported grew, as well.
In the mid 60’s, the United Way supported 30 community health
and human nonprofi ts. Today your Greater Douglas United Way
serves 34 nonprofi ts working to improve the human condition of
those in need.
Th e mission is “uniting people to meet the human needs in our
community”. Last year the United Way brought together just shy of
550 volunteers to improve the condition for many Douglas County
residents. Together we are the Greater Douglas United Way.
Lead Th e Way!

Thank you for voting Mercy Foundation’s Festivalof Trees as one of your favorite fundraisers inDouglas County.
Without the generous support of our BrilliantStar sponsor; Umpqua Bank, and Seven FeathersCasino Resort, our local wineries, and so manyothers (tree sponsors, designers, event sponsors, volunteers, and the 6,000 community memberslike you who participated in the events) thisfundraiser would not be possible.
This year, through your support, the Festival ofTrees was a huge success. All proceeds go toward helping Douglas County children andthe agencies that serve them. It does take a village to raise a child.

Music on the Half Shell has become an
integral part of Roseburg’s summers. We
gather as friends and neighbors to enjoy
a summer’s evening of diverse musical
entertainment. What started as a vague
pipe dream about a few folks picnicking
and sharing a summer evening in
a beautiful park with music in the
background, has developed into a jewel
on the Pacifi c Northwest music circuit.
Roseburg has become well known
among touring groups and our reputation is very good. Th e “free admission,”
quality and size of our audience and the beauty of the venue enhances our ability
to attract high-caliber musicians.
We oft en hear positive comments from performers who love the intimacy and
beauty of the venue. Artists have sometimes been invited to return. Upon their
return, response is almost universal — they exit the bus, grow a large smile and
say “Oh, this is the place with all the blankets and the beautiful river.”
Anyone may attend, and admission is free, which oft en supplies a caliber of
musical entertainment that would not be available to many in our audience. It
is truly about community coming together for a common purpose. Children so
full of joy. Music they can dance to. It is amazing to see roughly a quarter of the
population of Roseburg sitting side-by-side and joining harmoniously together
to enjoy a summer evening of music.

The new Wells Fargo Australian WalkaboutExhibit is coming soon! Willie the wallaroo can’t wait to move in; meanwhile, he sits withhis favorite animal, a giant stuffed frog.
Story and Photos By Darlene Alexander/Wildlife Safari
Wildlife Safari is proud to have been selected WW
for the 11th time in a row as the public’s #1 tourist at-traction in Douglas County - what an honor this is! It is YOUR community involve-ment and support that helps to bring new life and exhibits into the park. Now, as Wild-life Safari celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2012, we look forward to building on those factors that keep the park thriving so that every visitor who walks through our gates can experience a memorable and thrilling adventure.
The Wildlife Safari has been working hard to debut it’s
brand new exhibit in the vil-lage: The Wells Fargo Austra-lian Walkabout exhibit in the lower Village! Grand Open-ing is slated for spring break. Come out and meet the new animals! In the drive-through, the hippo exhibit has been renovated - now you can re-ally see the hippo! And the best part is that a new hippo will be arriving this spring, so Blippo will have a companion! All these changes have been possible due to the generous support of individuals and or-ganizations within our com-
munity. And let’s not forget our own hard-working staff, docents and volunteers. It is the united and mutual effort of everyone from outside and inside the park that keeps us thriving, that makes it possi-ble for us to provide a unique environment for people from all over the world to enjoy, learn about and experience native and exotic wildlife.
Because of the support of the community, the park
is able to extend educational and creative opportunities beyond our daily visitors. For example, in recent years Wildlife Safari has actively built upon existing connec-tions in providing a venue and individual programs for autistic and critically ill chil-dren and adults. Working with organizations such as Camp Millennium, Make-A-Wish Foundation and Dream Connection, Wildlife Safari has been able to reach out beyond the boundaries of the park. In seeking to offer a moment of reprieve for these children, the staff and volun-teers at the park have been touched by these individuals in ways that they will never forget.
Another milestone that could not have been ac-
complished without commu-nity support is Wildlife Safari’s accreditation from the Asso-ciation of Zoos and Aquari-ums (AZA). This signifi es that Wildlife Safari has established and maintains professional zoological management stan-dards as judged by other pro-fessional members of the As-sociation. Of the thousands of zoos across the United States, we are proud to join the 223 zoological facilities passing the AZA’s stringent inspections.AZA accreditation means thatwhen you come to WildlifeSafari, not only can you beassured of a fi rst-class experi-ence, but you are guaranteedthat our animals are providedwith the best in environmentaland husbandry care.
W ildlife Safari would liketo thank every singleWW
individual – from the visiblesupporter to the youngsters
in our County – to the staff, docents and volunteers of the park – for making and keeping Wildlife Safari the #1 tourist attraction in Doug-las County. Come and visit us – we promise a Safari you will never forget!

A Family AffairA Family Affair
Hours: Mon-Fri 9-6 | Sat 10-5 | Sun 12-5
At Roseburg’s favorite furni-
ture store, it’s a family affair.
In 1988, West Harvard Furniture
opened its doors with one thing in
mind, “Go the extra distance for our
customers”.
Today, three generations are
involved: Larry Garzenelli and
daughter Karen Kohlman direct the
operations, while Karen’s son, Tyler,
is a member of the third generation
to work in the store.
This will be the eleventh year that
West Harvard Furniture has been
named top furniture store in Doug-
las County. They were also awarded
3rd Place for Best Customer Service in
Douglas County.
“It’s no secret - Good value and
Great service is our goal. There
are no high pressured sales and
we’re here to get you the right
piece of furniture or mattress
the fi rst time and if you’re not
satisfi ed you have a 90 day com-
fort exchange”, says Kohlman. A
word of note...this community-
oriented business is the oldest
locally owned and operated fur-
niture store in town.
The store’s mission “Your
Friends in the Furniture Busi-
ness”, holds true year after year.
West Harvard Furniture does this
by selling the best quality furni-
ture at a fair price. Most impor-
tantly, they treat every customer
like their favorite relative. Family
remains a key word at West
Harvard Furniture!

Favorite Merchants & Retailers
Sherm & Wanda Olsrud have been in the grocery business for about 50 years, fi rst in Eugene and then in Medford, Klamath Falls and Roseburg. The fi rst store the Olsruds bought was a meat market in Eugene in 1956, which they operated until 1961. Sherm & Wanda then bought a 24-hour market in Eugene, selling it in 1967 to move to Medford. When Sherm & Wanda came to Medford in 1967, they bought the Thunderbird Market on Jacksonville Highway. In 1974, they purchased a store at the Shasta Plaza Mall in Klamath Falls. Other stores in Medford and Roseburg came in following years. The Olsrud’s grocery business has been active in supporting many local activities including 4-H, FFA and many others. They attend Jackson County,
Klamath County, Tulelake/Butte Valley, Josephine County, Siskiyou Jr. Livestock and Douglas County auctions. For the past fi ve years they have donated a semitruck load of food to the Umpqua Community Action Network. Sherm, Wanda and their son Steve Olsrud remain deeply committed to Medford, Klamath Falls, Roseburg and the surrounding community. Sherm, Wanda and Steve say their stores strive to give the customers what they want in a friendly manner at a good price. Sherm says, “If you shop with us you will save money”. Steve is quick to follow with “Buying right means we can sell it right”. The Olsruds wish to thank the good folks who continue to shop and work at Sherm’s Thunderbird Markets and Food 4 Less.
