Sometimes it can be a tough task looking for a great place to eat or the best place to go for breakfast.
What about auto repair shops? Lots of us don’t have the time to spend on do-it-yourself auto fixes, so knowing where to go is important.
And what about hair? Yes, hair grows back after a bad cut, but why take the chance?
Our 2013 Readers’ Choice guide will help you find the best of the best in
those and many other categories, as determined by reader balloting earlier this year.
We don’t claim the results to be based on the strict rules of polling, however. But we do claim the whole exercise to be a lot of fun.
This is the 12th year of the Daily News-Miner Readers’ Choice awards. Stop by any number of businesses or places around town and you’ll see the proudly displayed certificates pro-
claiming that spot as No. 1, as voted by you.
As always, we’re all ears when it comes to the Readers’ Choice. Send your category suggestions to us and we’ll consider them for next year’s awards.

When it comes to the best restaurant in Fairbanks, you have to go outside Fairbanks.
Two Rivers Lodge, a res-taurant rich in Alaska ambi-ance and big on food, took first place in this year’s Read-ers’ Choice contest as best restaurant overall, marking the first time in its existence the lodge ranked in the list-ings. It also nabbed second place in the fine dining cat-egory.
“I’m tickled pink and very excited,” owner Jon Burns said. “It’s great to be recog-nized.”
Burns and his wife, Kim, have owned the lodge at 16 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road for six years now, though it’s
been in existence for about 18 years. Over the years, it’s gone through several different owners before the Burnses took ownership of it.
Burns runs the kitchen and is lead chef most days, putting his years of culinary experi-ence to good use. “I’ve been cooking in Fairbanks since 1983,” he said. When he’s not in the kitchen, he’s in the restaurant’s lounge greeting diners as they walk in. “I like to treat everyone like family,” Burns said.
The restaurant is a mix of Alaska lodge surroundings complemented with fine din-ing fare — think big steaks, succulent seafood and chicken dishes. Burns cuts the steaks himself, and the 16-ounce slab of steak you order is a monster on the plate. Coupled
with a baked potato, and soup or salad, it’s more than enough for your meal as you’ll likely be taking some home.
Two Rivers Lodge boasts a full wine list, well-stocked bar and most of the desserts at the lodge are homemade on the premises. One event Burns has started is host-ing wine and beer pairings with dinner. He’s even hosted a whiskey pairing, serving aged libations with the meal. Burns also has started hosting themed dinning nights, the most recent of which was for Cinco de Mayo. On Mother’s Day, the lodge offered an elegant menu of prime rib and prawns or prime rib and king crab, and a brunch menu con-sisting of prime rib, stuffed

pork loin, chicken fettucine, tilapia Olympia, mashed potatoes, eggs Benedict, a French toast casserole and numerous desserts. In about three weeks, he’s hosting a Greek wine dinner.
The lodge itself is rich in Alaska decor: high ceilings, wooden walls and a deck that’s well used in the summer that overlooks a small lake. Its rus-tic feel gives you a very Last Frontier impression. The lodge is undergoing a little bit of renovation, with improvements being made to increase the atmosphere while you take in the surroundings.
And while the decor and atmosphere might be changing a little, Burns has no plans to alter the menu.
He’s sticking with what he knows.“Most of the recipes I use I learned from the
old chefs in town,” he said. “A lot of places don’t cook this way anymore.”

Fairbanks Light Opera Theatre has done it — again.
The production company known for its high-energy, high-quality musical produc-tions has caught the atten-tion of Fairbanks’ theater-going crowds, being named the No. 1 theater/perfor-mance company in Fairbanks in the 2013 Readers’ Choice awards.
And it’s no wonder, with productions like “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Cow-girls” and “The Wizard of Oz,” all of which played to packed audiences. Readers also voted FLOT’s “Oz” as the second-best production of the year, being bested only by the annual holiday “Nut- cracker” production. FLOT usually puts on
three productions per year and is run by an all-vol-unteer staff. It’s a non-profit arts organization that started in Fairbanks in 1970 with the goal to produce and promote musical theater in Interior Alaska.
This past season, “Oz” saw the biggest cast FLOT has ever dealt with — 55 actors, including a live dog on stage — all to bring the classic tale by L. Frank Baum to life. The set even included a tornado and mov-ing house on stage, a feat few, if any, theater companies can pull off in Fairbanks.
FLOT opted for the little-known yet well-received musical “Cowgirls” as a dinner theater production, a new venture for the com-pany.
In the spring, the com-pany rounded out its per-formances with the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which played for three weeks to sold-out crowds.
Quality productions aren’t FLOT’s only gig. In the sum-mer, FLOT hosts FLOT Jr., a series of week-long, age specific summer camps that teach the basics of musi-cal theater. Each camp will rehearse for a musical per-formance to be held at the end of the week, with lessons in acting, singing, dancing, costume making, makeup application, set construction, prop making and backstage jobs.
For more on FLOT, check out its website at www.FLOT.org.

Walking into Bishop’s
Jewelry Gallery, 1440 Uni-versity Ave. South, isn’t like walking into your regular, run-of-the-mill jewelry store. It’s like walking into a jew-elry store and so much more.
Bishops, owned and oper-ated by Bill and Rita Bishop, covers all the jewelry basics — gold, diamonds, jewels
of all color, shape, make and size. It also covers the “art” aspect of jewelry and jewelry making. It’s that aspect that probably helped Bishop’s Jewelry Gallery be named as the best jewelry store in Fairbanks by voters in the 2013 Readers’ Choice awards.
“That’s why I put ‘gal-lery’ in the name of the store,” Rita Bishop said. “I wanted to offer that art gallery experience as well.”
The big bling of Bishop’s Jewelry GalleryStore is No. 1 among Fairbanks jewelry fans

AND TOP AWARDS EVERY YEAR —
And offer it Bishop’s does.Bishop’s runs the jewelry world
gamut from precious gems and jew-elry design for engagements, wed-dings, birthdays, anniversaries and traditional high-quality bling to the more nontraditional side of jewelry with artfully created pieces made by jewelry artists from across the state, nation and world.
Pieces from Alaska Native artists sit alongside works by jewelry arti-sans from Mexico and Europe. Some of Rita’s handmade works are dis-played in the store.
The gallery is one of the few stores in Fairbanks using the latest technol-ogy in jewelry design, a computer pro-gram called Countersketch, which is a CAD program that merges technology with design to help customers find a fit and make unique to their tastes. “I like to think our claim to fame is whatever you can imagine, we can create it,” Bill Bishop said.
The Bishops have been in the jew-elry business for 28 years, starting out in the wholesale manufacturing side, but it’s only been the last six years they have pushed into the retail side of the business.
The range of designs, colors, shapes and sizes of rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and art pieces have caught Fairbanks’ attention as the go-to busi-ness for jewelry.
“It’s always an honor to have any-body recognize you,” Bill Bishop said, “and it’s motivating to have that boost.”
